Customer Review: Best gadget so far
This is by far the best gadget I have bought so far. Was looking for a means of sending mp3 and avi direct from my computer to my tv/amp via wireless in a different room. The house I am in has very thick walls and I was concerned however, I have a very good signal and getting good quality avi files and mp3 direct to tv. No flickering and very easy to install. Customer Review: Adequate basic recorder
I was looking for a second entry-level -R/RW recorder, having already got a Funai 2737 (which does the job fine). Decided to try the Toshiba as it had the benefit of Chase Play. In actual fact, this Toshiba seems to be the same underlying chassis as the Funai, with a different (somewhat more attractive) fascia. All rear ports and the user interface are all identical. The only difference is the addition of chase play. If you are drawn to this machine because of this feature then beware. Chase play can only be used when recording in quality setting of long play, or lower. This is tolerable on a small screen TV, but the quality when viewed on a large screen is barely acceptable, more or less making chase play a feature you will never use anyway. Apart from that, the unit looks and works fine, however, it might be worth considering the Funai and saving yourself ?25.
Customer Review: Not a bad machine, just too noisy
This machine has some very good points, but its too noisy to be used in a living room. Ours was RMAed. On the plus side: - Discs are initalised quickly, you can be recording on DVD-R within 20 secs. - The menu system is clear and easy to use - The DVD playing machanism is very quiet, you can’t hear the disc spinning at all - The DVD-R disc recorded played perfectly in Pioneer DVD (Dv464), Argos in Car DVD and PC. - It can play CDs of Jpegs. However the downsides out weight these good features: - Its very noisy, there is case fan at the back, that is always on when the recorder is. Watching Planet Earth with the DVD recording is, unconfortable, there is a constant whiring. Its 3 or 4 times noisyer than my AV reciever and I thought that was noisy! - remote control is “boxy” and square, hence unconfortable in the hand. - DVD-R take a LONG time to finalise, over 20 Mins. - It cannot play DVD-R discs of photo JPEGs burnt on my PC, that my Pioneer DVD player plays fine. Hence only 3 stars I’m afraid ….

Customer Review: Good Unit but poor Support
The record quality is very good with 5 quality options. To get a 2 hour film onto a 4.7gb DVD the quality setting needs to be on SP (The middle setting) and the reproduction is as good, if not better than the original. The 80Gb Hard drive is ample for fast recording and transfer to DVD, but if you are looking for a unit to store your favorite films on, look for one with a larger hard drive. The control facilities are better than some DVD players, they include Fast forward up to 80x and fast backwards also. The audio is supoosed to be 5.1 but my particular machine has an audio problem. I get sound for around 1 hour after power up and then it disappears until disconnected from the power for 1 hour. I have contacted Mustek and they have told me to return it to the factory at my own expense for assesment and to include the purchase receipt. This was a Christmas gift so I have no receipt. I will probably scrap this and Buy a Panasonic or something that has a better after sales service. A pity because all round the machine it self is well worth owning as long as there are no manufacturing faults with it.
Customer Review: Cheap and cheerful HDD/DVD recorder
It’s an HDD recorder, it’s a DVD recorder, and right now, it’s 120 quid. That’s a pretty tempting proposition. But the example that I bought has had a few problems. On my old TV, I had a lot of trouble with crackly sound (only from this player, not from any other source) though since changing TV’s, the problem has gone away. More annoyingly, the discs that this player was burning all had CRC errors on them, making them impossible to edit on the PC. I’ve downloaded and installed a firmware update from Mustek’s website, and (touch wood) that issue seems to have been resolved. Be aware that firmware upgrades are not without risk, and Mustek’s website expressly says that any units which die during a firmware upgrade will not be covered by their warranty. The interface is pretty clunky. Many of the buttons won’t do what you’d expect them to when you’d expect them to. For example if you stop the DVD disc and try to switch to HDD it won’t let you. You have to have pressed stop twice before it will let you switch. This can all get pretty frustrating, and I wouldn’t expect anyone who’s not ‘technically savvy’ to be able to get to grips with it. If you’re expecting to record stuff to HDD then edit onto DVD (cutting out the adverts for example) then be prepared for a disappointment. This unit is nowhere near that clever. Dubbing from HDD to DVD is really just a straight copy. If you want to do anything clever with the results, then you’ll need to manipulate it on your PC afterwards using the likes of VobBlanker and DVDShrink. If your budget will stretch, then buy a better model. If it won’t, and you don’t mind odd quirks and firmware upgrades, then this unit is a lot better thn nothing at all.

Customer Review: Average Product / Check Out In Store First…
I guess I made the mistake of trusting in the review comments both on Amazon and other web sites without actually making the effort to check the product out more carefully in store against other brands.

Having had a high end Sony SACD/DVD player previously perhaps my expectations of the Panasonic were too high? The build quality feels flimsy, each time the DVD drawer opens it sounds and feels as though it will be the last, placing a CD in the drawer needs to be done with kid gloves to avoid feeling as though it will drop off!

The functionality of the player is acceptable, nothing startling nor innovative, in fact compared to a friends earlier Sony model, for some reason seems to lack a sense of progression in it’s intuitive nature.

The manual seems to over complicate the functionality of the unit and it seems difficult to pinpoint a specific instruction to complete certain basic functions, they’re obviously in the manual but it’s not straight forward (unless I’m ageing and losing my technical ability!!)

Perhaps if I had taken time to compare the unit with others I may feel more comfortable in my purchase, my father in law is looking for a new unit to replace his Sony, sadly I can’t say I’ve suggested he rushes out and buys one of these.

I guess it probably does what it says on the box but asside of that it doesn’t delight, merely serves a purpose (in my opinion…)

Consider your purchase carefully on YOUR own research and findings not solely as I did, purely on the advice of others…

Customer Review: Almost perfect…
A ‘What Video’ Best Buy, this is an excellent DVD/HDD recorder that’s very simple to use. It has an inbuilt Freeview tuner that works well, and the 1080p upscaling is effective.

I’ve experienced none of the problems associated with cheaper HDD players, like dodgy lip-sync or image lock. With its huge memory capacity, this player virtually eliminates the need to record on disc at all, though it’s capable of recording, and playing back, just about all formats.

My one quibble is it doesn’t come with multiregion capability, though it is available pre-chipped elsewhere if you shop around.

Overall, an excellent player, which makes a perfect partner for Panasonic’s LXD700 TV.

Customer Review: Nearly Perfect
After a while of checking out the different GPS I bought this product for touring on my bike, and recently used it while in the Lake District. It dose what it says on the box,a good piece of kit-very reliable.
Things they should fix for the next version of Rider are.. The On/Off Button..A verbal warning telling you the battery is getting low.. And some sort of light on the GPS or charger showing the system is on charge or is fully charged. If your doing a lot of touring i would advise using the cable provided to connect it to your bike battery.

Customer Review: Ace piece of kit
Basically i initially bought the TomTom 500, recieved it and could tell it was a return so i sent it back (not from amazon) so i had to look for an alternative, glad i did as this baby is amazing. Well what can i say, its slim, lovely design. Bluetooth set up as a doddle, simple to use, recieving calls is superb through it, no glitches, saved me alot on buying a bluetooth reciever (dont like the headsets) I recieved a text message through and it started reading it to me, i was shocked by it, i didnt know it had that feature. Its so much easier to type in an address, well you dont type it in just tell it the place you want to go and it finds it, tell it the number and you are away, so easy, alot less fiddly. So many choices of sounds and pictures for the display, alot better than a garmin or anyother sat nav available. Well worth the money, wouldnt suggest getitng another one, this one is so ideal for use in car with the bluetooth feature, oh and i forgot to mention the FM Transmitter, as it has built in memory, store your mp3s on there and transmit them to the radio, or evan buy another SD card and loads more mp3s. Only problem is the FM transmitter when driving can become fiddly if you go through a town with the signal being used, not usually a problem if you know how the car works ;-) Well worth the investment, if you consider TomTom One ?149 bluetooth reciever ?39.99 FM Transmitter ?59.99
Customer Review: Problematic
The 520 looks great on paper however when I connected it to an Imac it wouldn’t initially work. The support from Tomtom in next to useless and they seem to be closed at weekends - website support unavailable and no phone support. I have now returned the item after trying for 3 days to get it working…. Replacement now seems to work fairly well on a G5 mac. Still a couple of major issues. ‘Browse Map’ doesn’t work properly. When I try to move a map, the view suddenly zooms in fully then I am instantly taken to other random menus where it can, and has, changed important preferences. Also the voice recognition sometimes recognises the internal TomTom confirmation voice and adds unwanted information to the destination. Now returning this item for a second time. On a lighter note, this is the first occasion in over 10 years that I’ve returned anything to Amazon and returns procedure/policy is excellent.

Techfocus TomTom GO/ONE v1/Rider Car Charger

Customer Review: Newly bought aerial picks up signal well.
This aerial is actually compatible with the Tom Tom Go (v3), the non-XL version. This is currently not mentioned anywhere on the TomTom website, although customer services say the website will be updated to reflect this. I have the aerial mounted vertically and it quickly picks up signal at my home and work, both in London. I have yet to try it on a journey. It quickly picks up around 40-100 different traffic issues, all in the South-East (presumably because I’m using it in London). Although I’ve yet to verify it, it seems to underestimate the delay due to each issue, e.g. it regularly says a traffic delay will take “1 minute” although e.g. AA roadwatch reports 20 minutes delay. Unfortunately you don’t get much control over the routing algorithm - you can either avoid all traffic, however long that takes, or stick to the fastest route. You can’t tell it (for example) that you quite dislike traffic, but not to choose a different route if it adds more than 20 minutes to your total journey. Like most of the TomTom software, it seems to be optimized for easy use at the expense of detailed control. One other general complaint about the TomTom algorithms is they don’t take time-of-day into account (this with software v7.1). They say south London to Banbury, through the centre of London, takes 1 minute 39, regardless of whether I ask at 1am or 7am. At 7am, it would be much higher. The algorithm should really consider time of day and realise that urban roads are slower at these times.
Customer Review: TomTOm RDS/TMC Receiver
DON’T BOTHER!!!!!! This is the most useless thing I have ever used. I can only say thank god i did’nt pay good money for it as it came with my Go510. I drive 30000 miles a year and have had it for nearly a year and its only ever tuned in twice and thats to Classic FM! Not exactly the first choice for traffic info! I’ve spent more time in traffic holdups than ever and now rely on radio reports which use RDS to interupt what i’m listening to, to give me traffic info from local radio stations. Far more helpful.

Customer Review: Good GPS system but read the small print
I just bought the TomTom Navigator 6 complete with bluetooth GPS and complete Western Europe Maps on SD card. The GPS works fine and it was great having everything on an SD card instead of having to copy from a CD-ROM. The software and bluetooth perform better than the wired TomTom GPS and Navigator 3/5 versions that I had previously used. My one complaint is that I am restricted to using the GPS on just one PDA, not that I had thought this might be a problem when I bought it. Now my XDA Exec has developed a fault and it is just one month outside of the warranty period. This means I will need to buy a new PDA and new GPS, as TomTom will not allow me to install the system on a different machine. I don’t expect this will cause many people a problem but do be aware of this restriction if you feel you may need to change your PDA as I am about to. So far I have had a week’s use from the TomTom Navigator 6 before my XDA Exec failed - at ?166 that is an expensive week’s GPS use.

Customer Review: Good Purchase
Bought this for my TomTom Go 720 and it’s pretty good. It includes a wall charger which comes with travel adaptors, a further mount kit and car charger. I find this great for keeping in my husband’s car for when we’re out and about. I’d say it’s worth it for the money

TomTom Alternative Mount Kit for GO & ONE
Customer Review: absolute rubbish!!!!
Do not buy!!! Flimsy, cheap plastic looking tack that is being sold at threee times the price it should be. Bought this for the air vent dashboad mount and it broke before I could even use it. The other parts look like you could buy them at Wilkinsons for 49p each. Look elsewhere for your Tom Tom mounts as if you buy this you will just do as I did and return it to the seller and ask for your money back.
Customer Review: alternative vs additional
This is the only way to get the air vent mount for the tomtom one new version (that I have found anyway) shame you have to buy all the other bits too. I think the confusion the other customers have is between the ‘additional mount kit’ i.e. to use in another car and the ‘alternative mount kit’ which is to make your tomtom fit in the one car i.e. you need to use bits which came with your tomtom too. I would recommend reading in detail the list from the tomtom website which makes it a bit clearer….I have had several close calls in trying to buy something for the new version One as not many sellers bother telling you if items are for the old version or the new version! READ CAREFULLY!

Apple iPod 30GB Video/Black (5th Generation)
I Pod for your daily life!

Customer Review: ipod
It’s a complete waste of money as it only lasts a year. Fortunately mine went wrong the week before the warranty would run out..even then you are paying ?39 for one. however, as for buying a new one.. Don’t. just stick to warranties. Even on Amazon it does not say that it only lasts a year.. unless you read the reviews! Even the customer service people did not say that the battery lasts a year. Maybe in the future I will just buy a small nano one. When I reported it, the customer service people say I have to reset.. what is the point when the batttery only lasts a year. They are under the impression that few people have problems with this ipod.. do they heck?!

Customer Review: not that impressed (yet)
I’ve only had this player 2 days but I must say my first impressions are not that great. On paper this machine seems to do everything, but I took a risk buying it as I couldn’t find any reviews for it online. My first comment is that it’s so s……l……o…….w. Put in a DVD movie and it takes an age for the menu to appear. Once playing a movie things are not much better. The 1080p upscaling (via HDMI) seems to work - however Iam not sure it’s any better than the xbox360 over VGA. The user interface looks dated and again is very slow to nativate around. I’ve yet to attempt any recording, but I hope it will score better in that area! So far only 3 stars (for HDMI output and styling).

Customer Review: Excellent product but with a few minor problems
Let’s face it, VHS is dead, so I needed a DVD recorder so I can record programmes off the TV etc; we’re all in that situation now aren’t we? There are so many DVD recorders available on the market now I started to wondered what else I wanted from a DVD recorder. I choose the Philips 3570 because it has so much going for it: The positives: - it can play DivX movies, - it can record on nearly any blank DVD (all except DVD-RAM) - it has a built-in USB port and IEEE1394/Firewire port (4pin) - it has DV composite-in - you can do minor video editing - it has VideoPlus Timer - internal hard disk (various sizes depending on model) - you can transfer files from HDD to USB or DVD etc Once the recorder was installed with my TV and Freeview, I was very happy, but then I started to notice the little things. The negatives: - it ain’t multiregional (this is stated, so my fault) - the interface is very slow - the remote takes some time to get use to - the whole unit crashes once in while for no reason whatsoever - it takes about a minute to boot up, so there is no instant recording - the depth of the unit is large, so make sure you have shelf space Even with the minor problems, the unit is very good and I am very happy with it. Philips could do a lot more with this unit, add Freeview, add HDMI, better interface, but all in all, this unit should cater for all your needs, especially if you acquire DivX movies off the Internet.
