Sony SVR-S500 - Digital TV Recorder (DVR) with 80GB Hard Drive and Freeview

Sony SVR-S500 - Digital TV Recorder (DVR) with 80GB Hard Drive and Freeview
With a Twin Freeview tuner and the 80GB HDD you will never miss aprogram with the SVRS500.

Customer Review: Love it…
Many negative reviews below, BUT (fingers crossed) I’ve had mine up and running a week now and - well, yes, it’s a bit slow, and no, it’s not completely silent, but I still LOVE it.

No messing with DVDs, you can see exactly how much room you have on the hard drive, I can pause and rewind TV whenever, and you can be recording 2 programmes at once while watching something else you recorded all at the same time (where else can you get that?)!

Channel 5 reception not fantastic but also never was with my last freeview box, so it’s not really bothering me. I may one day be tempted into cable because it’s pretty much picture perfect ALL the time, but I’ll still have it hooked up to this machine for recording.

I had a true electrickery anorak (and perfectionist) come round the other day and he made very impressed noises about how excellent it was for the price, so I’ve got no complaints.

Think the answer is to not have it in your bedroom if you’re a light sleeper.

Customer Review: Worst Sony Product ever - and that is being kind!
I love Sony - or did at least until I bought this. After having a successful introduction to Freeview via a Daewoo unit my hubby bought me for the bedroom, we decided to ditch Sky and go for Freeview in the livingroom. I saw some of the reviews regarding the Sony, but thought they had got it wrong. After all, Sony were great weren’t they? Got it all plugged together okay, got it switched on and then heard the fan from hell. Now, we live in a detached house and have the telly up loud - and I can still hear the fan going. The 3am download it does is no laughing matter either - horrendous fan noise which sounds more like my pc when its running at full pace doing the virus scan - this goes on for at least 30 minutes and seems to get longer every day. If you’re looking to buy this for the bedroom - forget it - the only thing you’re likely to get is a heart attack. Now don’t get me started about the EPG - it is the worst I have ever seen - menus are slow to load - not user friendly in any way - interesting that the Daewoo leaves Sony standing on all fronts for this. Picture quality is appalling - again the Daewoo leaves this well behind. In short, the only reason I give this unit 1 star is it hasn’t frozen yet.

Take my advice and steer well clear.

Sony RDR-HXD870 - DVD Recorder With 160GB Hard Drive - With Freeview - Black
Recordable formats: DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-RAM and HDD. Multiformat playback.
Amazon Price: ?202.35
Used Price: ?189.99
Customer Review: When will they get the EPG right?
The EPG lets down what is otherwise a very good machine. It does not continue to show the current channel in a window (with audio) when you channel surf using the EPG, nor does it give the program detail when the program is selected- you have to press the info button. ALL these features were on my 4 year old Grundig set top box, which I still prefer to use. On a more positive note, getting it to record is straightforward affair. The Sony does not require you switch to a standby mode to record, unlike the Panasonic DVD recorder which it replaced. This beligerently prevented you from operating basic features (like putting in a DVD to play) whenever it was programed to record anything. Whilst the noise of the SONY is not audible when watching TV you will not want to leave it on standby when reading a book in the same room. Despite these adverse comments it’s still probably the best DVD/PVR you can get at the moment.

Customer Review: Daewoo DF4150 Sucks
I have read all the review on this lemon and can agree with most comments, good when it wanted to work but bad when it did’nt. It stopped recording on DVD and even eraused discs after recording, takes an age to start up,i have to press start walk away for 10 mins press off, then play and 30 secs later it should come on.Sent the machine to only authorised repair dealers in Cornwall to be told it would cost about ?200 to have a new chip board or something like that, basicly useless. Now only good enough as grainy VHS recorder or DVD player not what i got it for. Oh and the repair shop said Daewoo knew about these faults with the software but are prepared to do diddly, THANKS Daewoo and -V- who i bought it from.
Customer Review: Top Quality DVD/VHS Recorder
1 have owned one if these units for over 12 months now and haven’t had any problems, its very user friendly, it took less that 10 mins to set up. The DVD recording picture quality gets abit dodgy if you record from SKY/Digital and go over SP, for copying VHS,Analogue tv or B&W you cant use the full SLP. The only thing that annoys me about this is that it takes about 3 weeks to start up so if you every see yourself on TV and think “I’ll record that”……….Don’t even think about using this. As i have SKY+ this isn’t an issue for me but it may be for others. Definitely highly recomended though.

Customer Review: re previous reviews
had this recorder for about a month now and i have had no problems with the manual nor any problems recording from sky+. picture quality is very good, it records on all discs, for the money i dont think you will buy a better machine
Customer Review: Nice recorder — Pity about the manual
I think this may well be a very good machine. However, I’ve had this kit for 6 months now and have not got around to doing anything other than play pre recorded disks (which it does very well). The reason for this lack of functionality is the rubbish manual which is the usual poor translation into Englishese. Even when I contacted Panasonic they agreed that it was poor but held out no hope of an english rewrite. The manual is fine if you just want to record the programmed tv channel. But try to fathom out how to say, record stored Sky+ programmes to archive them onto DVD. I did get a few clips onto a disk but gave up trying to edit them into a comprehensive programme. In short, the brochure promises marvellous features but the manual does not explain how to achieve any of these wonders.

Panasonic DMR-ES10EB-S DVD RAM Disc Recorder

Customer Review: Broke twice, and slow!
I’m on the my second player, and about to return it to get another!!! Yes, it’s broken again. The first one died after about 2-3 months, as it didn’t want to read any dvd. It didn’t matter if it was a dvd-rw, dvd-r or a brand new dvd. I got it swapped in the shop I bought it from. This one has been fine for many months, but now it’s doing the same. It is saying that dvd’s are unformatted, when they are not. I format them again, and it comes with the same message. It’s also starting to get picky over what it wants to play, and this includes purchased films. It’s also slow. From off to record takes over a minute. From off to play is about the same time. It’s very slow. Also, if you are watching a film, and you turn the player off, then it goes back to the very start. Not like most players which stop half way. I would recommend getting a dvd recorder with a hard disk, as you don’t have the issues of dvd’s getting scratched, and the player only wanting to use bits of the dvd. I had been putting up with it being slow, but now it’s just annoying. I wish I had spent my money on something else, and I’m very disappointed as it’s such a good make. Don’t buy this one. You also can’t edit dvd’s before you finalise them (dvd-r), so you can’t add chapters. And it does a check at about 3am if you put it on quickstart mode, which is very noisy, and has woken me up before I turned this function off!!
Customer Review: Good but…….
I was very pleased with this at first, the picture quality on long-play is very good except for Football and boxing. Any fast sports and the picture pixillates. Sports should be recorded on short-play which gives 2 hours and long enough for most football except where there’s extra time(World Cup!). If something good comes on and I want to tape it, I can’t just bung in a cd, it has to be formatted and this is annoying! To be honest vcr tapes had a lot of bonuses in terms of being user friendly, bung it in, press record, don’t like that? bit-wipe it! I will eventually buy a hard drive recorder.

Philips DVDR3305/05 DVD Recorder

Philips DVDR3305/05 DVD Recorder
Customer Review: Pathetic machine- even more pathetic customer helpline
I’ve had nothing but trouble with this machine since I bought it (not from Amazon). There is at least a 40 second delay after pushing any command buttons. Nightmare when you want to record anything improptu..by the time you’ve got an empty DVD in and waited for machine to acknowledge it and then press the record button, programme is almost over!!

Now after my warranty has run out, its decided to retain one of my DVD, the deck won’t open at all. Tried the customer helpline, after the long laborious menu,it eventually tells me the tel no. has changed, tried the new number and the message tells me to ring the original number… talk about going round in a circle! must have wasted three quid

Think I’ll just buy a new DVD-recorder…certainly won’t be another Philips.

I should have read customers’ reviews on this product before

buying.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Bought mine in Nov’05…have been rather disappointed with it since. Wish I’d looked at reviews first, this item has put me off Philips products totally. My father-in-law has a dvd/video combi, the dvd refuses to play sometimes unless you give it a tap or turn it upside-down and try again.

Very awkward to use, my wife is still unable to use it to record a program as its not straight forward at all. (no disrespect to the ladies but they are not normally technical minded about these things)

Have set dvd’s to 4 hour recording, recordings are sometimes pixellated.

There is no 3 hour record mode.

Menus are awkward to navigate through.

When Pdc is ON, it will not record the program I have set to record.

When recording using Videoplus you still have to set the record mode, ie AV1, AV2,F-AV etc.

The clock doesn’t set automatically when you switch on the mains plug, you have to manually set the clock if you want to set up a timed recording.

It takes a long time to initialise when you switch it on.

I did have trouble with it freezing up.

The remote has to be pointing directly at the machine for it to work.

Good points are it records onto dvd+ or - r/rw.

Wouldnt buy another Philips product again.

TomTom Go 510 GPS Satellite Navigation With European Mapping
The new Tomtom GO 510 Personal GPS Sat Nav Navigation Device is theentry level of the new GO range although not what you would call alow specification.Handsfree Bluetooth car kit integrated asstandard a larger 4 wide screen and a plethora of feature

Customer Review: load of rubbish
Sorry to be so negative but have had nothing but trouble with the Tomtom go 510 since I bought it a few months ago. The power lead doesn’t fit properly, it is too loose, and so it is difficult to charge up. It takes ages to lock onto satellites once turned on so you have to factor in an extra 5 minutes before setting off. It doesn’t stick to the the windscreen on my car very well (VW Golf) and regularly comes clunking off and turns itself off. Worst of all, it has twice tried to make me take a right turn where it has not been allowed (and has not been allowed for several years according to locals). I now only use the thing when I am on my own in a new area, otherwise my husband and I prefer to rely on paper maps and signs!!

Customer Review: TOM TOM 510 REVIEW
It does exectly what the advertising says, it works straight out of the box with no problems. However, as the built-in mapping & camera software WILL be slightly out-of-date, I recommend that you install the software CD-ROM onto your computer, connect your 510 and go to the Tom Tom website where it will check the installed software on the 512Mb flash card. It will then tell you what updates you require and you just select the ones you require.

Then the software gives you the option to make a backup which it places onto your computer. I bought a spare 512MB flash card then dragged & dropped the backup files onto it in Windows Explorer. Now you have a spare card in case the supplied Tom Tom card gets damaged.

Customer Review: Good while it lasts
I purchased a Tom Tom GO 510 in April this year. It was really easy to set up and get going. However, after about a week it failed such that although the screen was lit, there was absolutely nothing on it - a bit like the old ‘blue screen of death’ from Microsoft, but a lighter colour. That fault arose after I connected it to Tom Tom Home via my PC. The Tom Tom support guy suggested that I connected it to the PC and re-installed the software - impossible of course since the unit was unusable! It was replaced and the new unit worked fine for about five weeks, now it is just dead, and cannot be reset. It is going back to Tom Tom who will, at their leisure, replace or repair it. The engineer I spoke to did say that they seem to develop faults if they are connected to computers, although they are specifically designed to do that to get updates etc. Would I buy one again? Probably not - I can accept one unit being faulty as just bad luck, but not two out of two (and counting)

Customer Review: Great unit! Recommended!
I bought this unit, primarily for my wife little over two years ago. My better half has absolutely no sense of direction & is fearful of any electronic device, with the exception of kitchen ‘white goods’! On demand working can entail her driving long distances to anywhere in the UK & the Tom Tom has proved invaluable & has quelled all her fears. The colour display is excellent & the volume & quality of the spoken instructions (which it repeats twice in case you were day dreaming!)are excellent. My wife & me, find the full Post Code search the most valuable attribute. Is it perfect? No! I know of no sat nav unit that is infallible. In literally hundreds of journeys it has only led us slightly astray on three occasions & even then we were within 200yds of our destination, common sense does come into the equation. Occasionally, when on a new road the Tom Tom will show your vehicle travelling across a field but also showing the old road, usually in parallel. Minus points, the unit only comes with a car charging adapter - no mains adapter, but that’s cheap enough to buy separately. Tom Tom support are a complete waste of space & are not worth the cost of a phone call or the effort of an email! Would I buy the same unit again - YES!

Customer Review: It’s OK, but I expected a better product from Tomtom
My initial impression was good, the case looks nice. The unit has a VERY snug fit in the case, although I haven’t suffered the problem that others report of the unit being turned on. On first use I thought the clip holding the case closed didn’t work, but what you have to do is push it quite hard into it’s retainer until it clicks, once you’ve realised that it works quite well. I’ve already dropped the case once and the lid didn’t spring open and my 720 was undamaged, so top marks for that. So, in summary, not quite up to the standard I’d expect from Tomtom, but still good enough to do the job (especially at this discounted price)
Customer Review: Don’t buy it!
I agree with the reviewers below - poorly constructed and unfit for purpose. Case falls apart - catch does not work - TomTom GO 720 fits in case so tightly that it switches the unit on - difficult to remove the unit from the case once in. Don’t waste your money!

Customer Review: Switches off every 5-10 minutes - stay away from this!
It is too late for me to return the product to Amazon, but I will see what I can do with the Sony customer services. I have used it for a month and, with a few minor problems, it has worked OK for 3 weeks. In the last week, however, it keeps switching off VERY frequently. It does so when I watch TV and also when I am watching TV. On the TV, it freezes for a few minutes, so you lose 5 minutes every time it switches off - frozen image, switch off, switch on again and bring it back to the right channel. I am going back to my cheap freeview box + dvd player. If I cannot return the dvd recorder, I will only use it for the occasional recording, but then it is far too expensive for this!
Customer Review: Sony DVD recorder just keeps powering off
Bought this recorder in March 2007. Initially thought it was fantastic but after a few weeks started powering off at random times. This week, despite putting everything to the factory defaults I am now trying to return it to Amazon. It can be ok and then will power off and try to restart. My wife has missed loads of programmes and is not happy. We have loads of Sony gear, telly, camcorder etc and always thought Sony was great. First Sony product I have had which has been faulty (replaced a Sony video recorder which was brilliant) I think I am being harsh but I expect a really high standard from Sony - might have expected this from some unknown brand.

This Samsung product has many great features. HDMI, HD compliant, 250GB and so on. Yet it will have you cursing at the device within hours of starting to use it. When programs are to be recorded using the timer capability, the device must be turned off. If you are playing something at the time, it will not record. So you must switch it off, let it start recording, then go back to what you were watching before, which naturally it has forgotten about leading to irritating searches. Then when the timed recording finishes, it switches off the device, regardless of what you were doing. It is intensely annoying to use. Not a good feature in a TV recorder. Other systems do not have this design flaw. One can only speculate as to why Samsung designers might consider this a sensible feature as it so obviously is not.

Customer Review: Excellent product but with a few minor problems
Let’s face it, VHS is dead, so I needed a DVD recorder so I can record programmes off the TV etc; we’re all in that situation now aren’t we? There are so many DVD recorders available on the market now I started to wondered what else I wanted from a DVD recorder. I choose the Philips 3570 because it has so much going for it: The positives: - it can play DivX movies, - it can record on nearly any blank DVD (all except DVD-RAM) - it has a built-in USB port and IEEE1394/Firewire port (4pin) - it has DV composite-in - you can do minor video editing - it has VideoPlus Timer - internal hard disk (various sizes depending on model) - you can transfer files from HDD to USB or DVD etc Once the recorder was installed with my TV and Freeview, I was very happy, but then I started to notice the little things. The negatives: - it ain’t multiregional (this is stated, so my fault) - the interface is very slow - the remote takes some time to get use to - the whole unit crashes once in while for no reason whatsoever - it takes about a minute to boot up, so there is no instant recording - the depth of the unit is large, so make sure you have shelf space Even with the minor problems, the unit is very good and I am very happy with it. Philips could do a lot more with this unit, add Freeview, add HDMI, better interface, but all in all, this unit should cater for all your needs, especially if you acquire DivX movies off the Internet.

Customer Review: Looks nice, but totally lacks usability
Picture it, “Oooh - Eastenders is on tonight, gonna record that at 7:30pm. “Why don’t I watch a bit of telly in between?” Well, you would, if you wouldn’t have had to turn the damn thing off to record it. The basic design of a timer is to either a) notify you when something starts (which it doesn’t), or b) start recording when it starts (only by turning it off). And by turning it off means you have 5 measly channels to watch. And if you forget?? Well, you’re screwed as it won’t record. No multi-region player which is rubbish! And the EPG TV Guide - AAARRGHGHHH - You view the guide, and when you want to scroll to another channel, it thinks - “Ooo - I bet they want to watch the new channel?” - The answer - NO! I’m browsing the EPG because I’m seeing whats on. It will switch channels, which means a 1-3 second re-tune for every 1 press down. You can do it on Sky, VirginMedia, even a freeview box, but they were trying to be a bit too clever. Oh - and the “instant record” function. You press record, you go to bed. Wake up - oh dear, your hard disk was recording all night - sorry! Which means if you want to keep your recording, you have to use the editing tools to cut your program out. Very very annoyed with this product - waste of time! My advice, buy a multi region DVD player and Sky+. At least you can record 2 channels at once, while watching another recording back.
Customer Review: look you stupid idiots
look for all the idiots out there who thinks that a dvd recorder should act like a sky+ box well you are wrong. the dvd recorder has’nt got the technology to record a channel while you watch another. It is impossible due to it has only one tv cable running througth it and a sky+ box has two. do not diss this product when you dont have a clue how it works. the point of this product is to record a channel while you go out thats why you leave it on standby. if you want to watch a channel and record another then get your self a sky+ box. for the people who want to buy this product think about it do you need it for when you go out or just because it looks nice. I got one and I thinks its very good due to what It can do i used to have a sky+ box and thought it was ok but every time i recorded something it always had adverts in it. with the samsung dvd recorder you can partial delete the adverts off the program with ease. also the new way of watching fims is the divX player. you can get fims off other people you know that could have a divX player and can give you very good quality films on a standard 700mb compact disc. finally dont read the other comments they go on and on and on complaining about stupid stuff. e.g ” the case looks cheap”. what an a..hole.

PHILIPS Hard Disk/DVD Recorder DVDR3440H/05 80 GB

PHILIPS Hard Disk/DVD Recorder DVDR3440H/05 80 GB
Customer Review: Great product for non freeview digital users
Got this product as we have virgin cable and wanted something that could record onto a hard disc, which pretty much rules out everything with a built in freeview tuner.

Had the product set up in minutes, plug in the scart from the digi box and the other to the TV and thats it!

The recording buffer which automatically records whatever you’re watching is fantastic. Watched a DVD and found that the hard disc had recorded what was on the digi box which was great. Easy to rewind and pause live TV.

Fully recommended. Would get 5 stars if I could work out how to set the default channel to the decoder scart!

Fantastic.

Customer Review: Wot no Freeview?
Have just bought and sadly returned this item today. The built in tuner is analogue only, meaning that it’s not really suitable for me - it needs a separate Freeview box to be able to record channels others than BBC1 - Five. No Electronic Programme Guide means that if you’re after something that can be used like Sky+ with the added benefit of a DVD recorder, you’ve bought the wrong thing!

Customer Review: Great Spec - Appalling Implementation
The user interface is one of the worst I have ever had the misfortune to use. 4 separate button presses and 40 sec wait to get to a Freeview channel from standby. The 7 day EPG takes 7 minutes to load - for each channel!!! Persistent random freezes and hangs. Totaly unusable. Returned to supplier within a week.
Customer Review: No technical support
As with other reviews this looks great on paper but doesn’t live up to its billing, especially in the DTV area - continually freezing, loss of digital channels, etc. At first only occasionally, but recently it happens all the time. Per the warranty sheet I called Goodies Enterprise who told me they no longer support these machines if they are bought from Amazon, and that Amazon themselves will support them. I wonder if Amazon know this, as there appears to be no technical support pages or contacts on the web site. The callback facility just gets you through to a non-technical call centre in the USA. They arranged a replacement and hopefully this will work a little better, but the lack of support is worrying.

Customer Review: Effecient and Simple
I recently purchased this DVD Recorder as a second to an existing more expensive JVC model. The Samsung was easy to setup straight from the box and within minutes I had all the TV channels and my CCTV system linked in and working. Recording to HDD is easy although the system does not support an OverWrite feature on repeat (Daily/Weekly) recordings which is a shame. Navigation around titles is easy once you have found the ANYKEY (seriously!) and the copy to DVD is both quick and easy to operate. Editing facilities are basic but again easy to use and playback quality is good. If you need a good value for money machine with easy to use basic features or a second machine for basic duties look no further than the Samsung.

Customer Review: Looks great but Problems Problems, PROBLEMS!
BEWARE- although this is a lovely looking player after exactly 1 year of owning its now unusable for recording. When originall bought i had to have it replaced several times before i actually recieved one that worked. Throughout its life i’ve had a few things go wrong such as locking up and having to reboot, then recording a program only to find at the end there’s nothing recorded or at least the recording is unaccessible. Not only that. the recordings are in a non-standard format therefore cannot be recognised for playing by some computer programs. Right now, even with a firmware upgrade and a factory reset it just makes RW disks unusable and just doesn’t record reliably. In fact if it does record i’m surprised and then if i try to record another title on the same disk it usually becomes unreadable on that attempt! Whats even worse is -if i lock the disc on this machine which is meant to protect the recording - it actually makes it unreadable. I PERSONALLY HAVE LOST IRREPLACEABLE FOOTAGE BECAUSE OF THIS AND ITS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH. overall the spec looks great on paper, its easy to use but it would be nice if it all just worked. I just hope that the other Ellion models are better designed for those who buy them. Watch out folks
Customer Review: help with Ellion 530s
This is the the queries that I have sens to ELLION, If anybody can tell how get My Ellion dvd 530s to “SEE” my Freeview settop I will be Most grateful. This is my Fifth attempt to get help from ELLION? I am trying to setup my new digital Ellion DVD-530s (PAL) Dual Recorder. I have tried to follow the manual, but find it rather lacking in detail. All my equipment have scart connectors, can you show me the best and easiest way to setup the following System. Freeview set top, VCR and a DVD-530s (PAL) dual, to PHILIPS widescreen TV. So far I’ve been able to make recordings from 4 normal transmissions, but my dvd 530s will can’t “see” my Fergison Freeview set top, therefor I am unable to make any recordings from it??? Come on, If you can’t give me an answer at least acknowledge my Emails. I am Still Waiting. Tom Lyon
