Customer Review: It’s good but there’s a small problem
I’ve been using this for a few months and I find it to be great, but there’s a small issue with its software. After a few months my tomtom just wouldn’t switch on. I first thought I would have to send it back, but managed to fix it myself at the end. What I did was to connect it to the computer and reinstall the whole software. I bet there might be a few people who would think their tomtom needed repair or something. It’s not a big deal if you have a computer and have the tomtom software (that comes in the pack) installed in it, but anyway it’s an issue tomtom (the company) should pay more attention to. Nevertheless I still find tomtom to be the best GPS device among its range. It’s simple and does what it says.
Customer Review: Does what it says on the tin
Can’t complain with this although it seems that some people bought this thinking they could use it abroad. If you wan’t a capable sat nav for the UK only then this is the one. Only don’t buy the add-on of a windscreen holder and charger as described. One the charger has the wrong connection, two the windscreen holder kept falling off and three…and this is the best one…it already comes with both!!! Why would you want 2??? It’s not obvious it comes with either.

Customer Review: Excellent !
I was a bit unsure about this sat nav after reading some of the reviews. I would like to say, however, I have not experienced any of the problems some people have. It has worked perfect and I have added an SD card for my music. You do get free trafic info, using the supplied ariel that fits inside your windscreen, but the information you get is patchy. You can upgrade to getting traffic info from TomTom through your mobile phone, but you have to pay a subscription for this. I would say that if you want to use the hands free feature’s on this, then you should check with the TomTom website for your phone’s compatability before buying it. Overall a great unit, and i would highly recommend it.
Customer Review: TomTom 520T
As with the previous reviews, this unit is easy to use both in terms of planning a trip and the actual guidance. It locates you very quickly via the built-in quick-fix software. The only misleading part is that you are under the impression that “Free Traffic Updates For Life” means you get automatic subscription to the PLUS Traffic service (saving ~?30/yr). This isn’t the case, in the TomTom 520T box you also get a RDS-TMC traffic signal reciever. The RDS-TMC will pick up traffic information from radiostations and convert them onto the TomTom. This is the “Free Traffic Updates For Life” you’re actually getting. With that said the RDS-TMC is actually fairly useful (only tried in London so-far) and highlighted several delays which the TomTom then navigated me around. How this rates against the PLUS Traffic service I don’t know.
Tomtom GO Classic 510 / 710 / 910 / ONE Car Charger

FM Transmitter Mount for GO 510/710/910
Enjoy the music on your TomTom GO through your car sound system! With the TomTom FM Transmitter Mount, you can play the music on your GO through your car radio. Simply dock your GO on the Transmitter Mount, tune your GO and radio to the same unused frequency, and then sit back and enjoy your music, along with voice instructions and hands-free calling, all via the car audio system. What?s more, connect an iPod to your GO 510, 710 or 910 via the iPod Connect Cable and the FM Transmitter Mount lets you play your iPod tunes through the car radio, too. This accessory requires at least version 6.522 of the TomTom application. Connect your GO to your computer and use TomTom HOME to update your application automatically and for free. This mount qualifies as a short range device. The use of the FM radio frequencies by short range devices is governed by local laws and regulations which may vary from country to country. Features •Wirelessly connect your GO to your car speakers •Listen to songs stored on your GO 910 hard disk in stereo •Connect your iPod to your GO and listen to your music through your car speakers •Hear navigation instructions through your car speakers •Listen to hands-free calls through your car speakers •Seamless integration of the GO and car stereo ensures your music stops for voice instructions and (hands-free) calls. Compatibility: TomTom GO 510, GO 710, GO 910
TomTom GO 720 TomTom presents the new and improved version of its Go 510 with the TomTom Go 720. Its 4.3? screen is larger than the 4? screen on the 510, and this GPS is one of the first to incorporate voice recognition technology. The TomTom Go 720 will record your voice and give you the answers to your vocal navigation queries while you’re on the road. You?ll be able to ask your GPS to calculate the shortest or quickest itinerary between points A and B, and you can even confirm or cancel a request, all with your own voice. This GPS allows you to save step-by-step instructions of your itinerary, and you can choose between pre-recorded voices, the voice of a family member or your own voice to guide you as you travel. With a never-before-seen graphics interface, this GPS gives a sleek look to its maps and shows building contours. The TomTom Go 720 has several points of interest and lists the positions of fixed speed cameras in its memory. Completely customisable, this GPS can even save your own points of interest, addresses or personal notes along the road or itinerary. The MAPSHARE function lets you modify the maps that are stored in the GPS memory. You can change the street names, direction of traffic and other elements, and send them to the TomTom community by connecting your GPS to your computer. TomTom users can receive new updates this way, whenever they choose. In addition, this GPS includes a help menu to give you a hand in case of problems or unexpected situations. You?ll also find a direct-access Bluetooth-telephone function with listings of the nearest police stations or hospitals. The innovations don?t stop with the GPS functions, as they?re also present in terms of design. The TomTom Go 720 includes aluminium inserts for a comfortable touch and feel, and complete discretion when it’s on your windscreen. Plus, the TomTom Go 720 offers a number of handy functions, such as an MP3 player, photo viewer and an in-built FM transmitter, so you can l
Customer Review: A solid and reliable performer with lots of features
My first Sat Nav was an integrated NavTech system and its wasn’t a patch on my TomTom Go 720. I have used TomTom GO 720 in the UK, Spain and France and also played with the GO 520 and 920. As far as the 720 is concerned I can’t think of any major faults and even though it has some niggles I wouldn’t be without it and it is fully recommended, in fact I would recommend the entire GO range. However only buy the 920 if you need worldwide maps as the additional features aren’t that impressive for the extra money.
Build Quality : Well built but quite bulky but as it is purely for use in the car this isn’t a problem. The sound is clear and can be set to automatically adjust to the ambient noise level. The windscreen cradle is well made and durable and although connecting it to TomTom is ok it is a bit clunky and fragile. One little niggle is the on/off button which seems to have a mind of its own and can take any random time to activate from a short press to a long five second press. The display is large bright and clear and the colour scheme is fully configurable.
Reliability and accuracy: Like all Sat navs it does get confused now and again, but it is rare and I generally have faith in its advice. Some sat navs seem to be shy of using minor roads when routing but TomTom uses them very effectively. When entering an address TomTom does not currently support postal or zip codes in other European countries and I would have found this useful. The voice commands are clear and precise.
Software: The touch screen interface is very easy to use but make sure you have the latest software version as the new version has a lot more features. This can be downloaded after purchase. I requested an update to the maps but I have been told that I have the latest version, in which case there are a few areas where TomTom thinks you are having an off-road experience because of changes in the road system. An advantage to TomTom GO as opposed to TomTom ONE is that the European map is combined into one map whereas on cheaper TomToms’ you have to select the map that you require.
Battery life: Sort of irrelevant as I always use the supplied cable for use in the car’s 12 volt socket.
Reception: Can take up to 30 seconds to lock on to the signal but once it has got it there isn’t a problem.
Memory: Once everything is loaded you don’t have a lot of memory to play with. I have around 14 Mb and I can have problems uploading large upgrades to the software. To help I have deleted lots of things that I don’t use such as most of the voices and the speed cameras in Belgium. I am not sure if you can buy a 2Gbyte card for TomTom but I think it should be sold with a larger memory card.
PC Software: Early versions of TomTom Home (the program that sits on your PC and enables you to do updates) weren’t that good at updating so make sure you have the latest version. However all versions install easily and connection to TomTom is reliable.
Other Features used:
The blue tooth connection works well.
Hands free works well but you can only have one phone connected at anyone time.
There are many other features including a traffic information service that can be connected via Bluetooth from your mobile.
Note that the 720 is not an MP3 player and one of my friends has the 920, which is, but even so it isn’t really a replacement for an in car music system so it is a bit of a gadget.
Finally, from my own experience and that of friends, don’t buy an expensive in car system as TomTom seems to whip them all for much less money.
Customer Review: TomTom Good - Mapshare Bad
I purchased the TT720 at Xmas and was very happy with the functionality - especially the FM transmitter for music.
The major disappointment for me is the shockingly poor software bundled with the unit. Out of the box the docking station and software refuse to work. Downloading the free updates moves this forward but the software is very ‘buggy’ and the very latest update freezes my PC completely. The net result of this is the mapshare functionality does not work so updating known errors (such as 60mph sections of the M6) is impossible and the unit sends me down A-roads instead. The TomTom web site has also proved a hit and miss affair.
The in-built speaker for phone calls is also a little quiet (the phonecall cannot be routed via the FM transmitter)
So in summary TomTom720 good - but would be better if the advertised mapshare functionality actually worked - I’m sure TomTom will sort this out in time but keep your money in your pocket until they do.
