The Exeter-based electronic trio release the follow-up to 1999’s critically acclaimed debut Manual. This time around, there is greater use of samplers, squeaks and beeps, as they create ambient fairytale soundscapes anchored by revolving drone guitar and shimmering melody. The stand-out track is the intriguingly-titled “Derailleur, King Of The Mountain”, a mini-symphony complete with dripping cave water. Less arresting are James Brooks’ passionless vocals. Determinedly deadpan, they render a dreamy track like “Kinski In Helsinki” ordinary. Appliance are strongest when they keep to the reverberating loops and gleaming melodies, as in “Ex4″, the ethereal opener, and “Slow Roller”, which sounds like Joy Division meets Moby. –Lucy O’Brien

Customer Review: Overrated, very disapointed. Avoid.
There is no built in digital receiver (a separate set top box is needed), the disc player has a high pitch whistle when playing a disc and play back quality using the hard disc facility is poor. Oh and my toshiba television remote (32wlt68) does not operate it when switched to dvd or vcr settings. So I now have a zapper for my set top box, one for my t.v. and one for the dvd/vcr player.Thats three in total. To record a programme onto the hard disc facility via the set top box is like crossing the M25 on foot blindfolded and walking backwards. The back of my t.v. unit is like spahetti junction too.
Customer Review: Great but not quite perfect
Having read all the reviews on Amazon about this machine, I decided to take the plunge while the price was so good (?165). While overall it’s a great machine, it does have some disapointments. The first thing I discovered was that it is not multi-region (at least one reviewer said it was). It may well play NTSC VHS (I don’t know, I don’t have a tape to test it with) but it certainly wont play region 1 DVDs. The next thing I discovered was that it wont copy DVDs recorded on another machine. This is a pain if you have, say, old camcorder footage that has been previously transfered to DVD and you want to re-edit on the Toshiba’s HDD. This is obviously none copyright material, so why not let it be copied freely? The last problem that I discovered was when transfering old camcorder-shot VHS material from the 1980s. Sometimes during the transfer, the machine stops dubbing and shows a message that it will not dub copyright material??? And when it does copy, it’s a bit hit and miss on the final result, with copies suffering from tracking style problems. I guess the solution is to hook up a seperate VHS/DVD player for the initial dubbing of old material. Not ideal and defeating the object somewhat but once they are transfered, that’s it. On the plus side, using the HDD for recording is great. Setting it at LP, the picture is perfectly acceptable. The thumbnails are essential for identification as the recorder doesn’t automatically name the recordings and doing it manually via the handset is tedious. It does actually list the channel, recording setting and day/time/date of the recording but the time/date function does sometimes default to ‘Mon 01/01/07′(maybe this is a fault on my machine?). The timeslip function is another great feature. If a TV programme is about to start and you’re still making your sandwich, just press ‘timeslip’ and carry on with your chore. When you sit down 10 minutes later, press ‘timeslip’ again and the show starts from the begining and you can watch it as if live (and fast forward the ads). You can even watch a previously recorded programme on the HDD while recording something else on the same HDD at the same time!!! Transfering from HDD to DVD is easy. I transfered 2 movies, total running time 3 hours (after I had edited out the ads) using the auto function to fit them neatly onto the disc. The result was perfect and the quality great. The finished disc had a neat menu (don’t think it will do chapters) and played fine on another player in the house. My TV is a bog standard, 3 or 4 year old telly. Not even widescreen and I’ve not had any of the problems that have been mentioned in some of the other reviews. I have a freeview box connected by scart and a normal sky box, again scart connected. Everything is just connected as if the Toshiba was a normal VHS machine and there are no problems with not being able to watch one channel while recording another that have been experienced by other reviewers. So, despite the problems of transfering old video material (and that may be just unique to my stuff), it’s still a great machine and at ?165, it’s a great bargain.

Customer Review: Something to be aware of
I bought this item just over a month a go as an anniversary present for my parents. After they had unwrapped it at a family gathering I plugged it all in etc but got a message of ‘HDDERR’ and the DVD just opened. Thats the sum total of my experience!!! Totally embarassing. I researched this very carefully but had not heard of such problems but when I went surfing again, a couple of similar things cropped up with reference to the Samsung HDD disk being temperamental. I didn’t buy it from Amazon but a company called Cheap Telly (yes, the name does rather sound iffy in hindsight). Apparently, according to Panasonic, you have got 28 days from their despatch date (not delivery date)in which you would get the unit replaced. Even thought I didn’t plug it in until the 28 days had passed they are now saying that I will have to take the unit for ‘repair’. It’s outrageous!!! My parents surprise was completely ruined and they add insult with this. I’m still negotiating with Cheap Telly but for the price I paid (still over ?400)And because of the name of Panasonic, I expected much better things. Amazon are usually excellent in this respect from my own experience so you should have better service if you buy from them Others here have enjoyed the unit so it may well be worth purchasing. Just beware and make sure that you check yours as early as possible as the customer service from Panasonic isn’t really what you would hope for.

ATMT iZone FM101 Wireless FM Transmitter with Built-in USB Hub Charger for iPod or any MP3/MP4 Player
Customer Review: It works - Just About
Having followed the advice of the previous reviewer, I promptly fitted this device with the requisite AAA batteries, and thought to enjoy my ipod shuffle on my radio.

At first, it seemed fine. I set the frequency to 101.1 fm, my radio found it automatically, and the music quality seemed fine, if a little distorted. However, once I began to drive for more than 2 minutes, the signal seemed to become intermitant at best, constantly dropping out and becoming unbearable.

Because there is no means of attaching the device to any place in the car, you then start to move it around in the desperate, but futile hope, that the signal will improve. This is dangerous practice of course. As is fumbling about tryng to change the track, I would recommend an mp3 player which has the capacity for ‘playlists’.

So, on finishing my journey, I experimented with a variety of frequencies, and guess what, no improvement. So frustrated was I, that I have reverted to C.Ds. That is certainly the way forward, burn itunes to a compact disc, rather than wasting time and money on this.

Like I said in the title, it does work, but I almost rather it didn’t. The frustration of listening to a tune distorted with static to such a ridiculous degree will have you on the verge of tossing it out of the window, and reversing over it.

Customer Review: Great Value FM Transmitter
I had been thinking about buying an FM Transmitter to use in my car for some time but had been put off by some negative comments re reception problems etc but when I saw this at such a “silly” price I thought why not give it a go ( especially as I needed to add a few pounds to an order I was making for some books to get Super Saver Delivery ! ) The transmitter duly arrived a few days later and I have been very surprised. It was very easy to set up.You just plug it in to your cigarette lighter and connect to the headphone socket of your MP3 player. I have settled on 107.9 FM as the best frequency for my car and the sound quality is more than acceptable with very minimal “hiss”. Build quality appears a bit flimsy but for the money what can you expect.I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone thinking of buying an FM Transmitter.

Customer Review: Flawless recording and Divx Playback
I am so glad to have taken Ellion 530S. Good value for such features including variety of connections that makes my life easy for connections with TV and other set-top boxes. I have had no problems in having copied so many programs into blank dvds and divx playback is a bonus. Picture quality is quite good and region free setting is handy. Definitely one of the best dvd recorders in the market

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY!!!!
I bought this a while ago, the first one I got didn’t even switch on so they replaced it. The second one worked ok for about 5 months and I have nothing but trouble with it since….it only records when and if IT feels like it - it has no consistancy it reads a disk fine one time and then put the same disk in 2 mins later and it says disk is not compatable! It’s a very expensive DVD PLAYER NOT RECORDER unless you only want it for 5 months. Please save your money a buy a decent one - that’s what I’ve had to do!!!

Customer Review: Cheap and cheerful
I purchased for under ?50- and you do not expect a great deal for this amount. I did find that my panasonic ram discs played on this machine which was the main reason I bought it, but the Samsung do not play on the panasonic. I too have tried timer recording onto ram disc and it wouldnt. does anyone know if this a fixable problem?
Customer Review: Very disappointing - don’t bother.
Could not cope with dvd-ram discs (same problems as other reviewers). Progressive scan feature resulted in sound but no picture. Froze several times, I had to unplug it to re-set. It was cheap but I thought Samsung were fairly reputable and now I wish I hadn’t bothered. Returned within a week for a refund.

Customer Review: Not a good PVR
Although this has lots of features and the picture/recording quality is good it is let down by the speed (or rather lack of speed) with which you can navigate the index of recordings made on the hard disk. It isn’t possible to view many recording titles on the same screen and the process of scrolling through the titles is painfully slow. Not competitive with Sky+ or Topfield PVRs in my opinion.

Daewoo DHR8100P DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive [Electronics]
Customer Review: So Much Promise
Firstly, It does do what it says, it records on hard disk and DVD, and it does so competently. It has little irritants like naming of titles is only in upper case, no QWERTY keyboard layout. The pause live TV only lasts an hour, which I know a year ago was cutting edge practically, but still! It tries to be slick, and flash but it realy isn’t. I do like the editing functionality but the menus are clumsy. Who did they test it on?The user manual says you can record on DVD-R but somehow it won’t let you. +RW is fine though. the picture quality is good on SLP so use that and save space. You can get a lot on 160GB at that rate. Good for recording your old VHS onto HDD, & editing it (in a basic fashion) before dubbing to DVD. You can’t watch one channel whilst recording another! It’ll be obsolete before long too long as it’s analogue. Shame really, good idea that wasn’t taken far enough. Add twin tuning freeview and better navigation / editing tools… now that would be the thing.

Toshiba Rd-Xs24 Harddrive Multi-region Capable DVD Recorder 160Gb -Silver

Customer Review: MULTI-REGIONAL?
Ordered this recorder because we needed a multi-regional recorder. The advertisement states it is multi-regional capable, but we had to return it as could not get the hack to work. Am aware that it should be possable, but didn’t work for us.
Customer Review: Buy one, without doubt!
I have had one of these for about 6 months now, and I’m hard-pushed to fault it. The picture quality of the recordings to both DVD and the Hard Disk are excellent, I really can’t tell the difference between the recorded and the original. The timeslip function is excellent; if you’re watching something you just don’t want to miss and say for instance the phone goes, simply press the timeslip button and it starts recording from the moment you press the button. You can effectively pause the TV, and resume it as you wish, or you can rewind back to the start, as it will continue to record until you press the timeslip button again. I have yet to fill the hard drive, and so far there are hours upon hours of video on it, with more than enough room left. It only takes a few minutes to burn a title to DVD. When I bought this unit, it was a lot more expensive than it is now, but even at the old price (well over ?300) it is, in my mind worth every penny. It’s dead easy to use with virtually everything being menu driven, and if you have an external Dolby Digital Amp, invest in a digital lead, you’ll notice a big difference with the sound. If you haven’t got one of these and want to save space, upgrade your DVD player, dump the old VHS, you must have one. I wouldn’t be without one, not now.

Sony RDR-HXD710 DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive and FREEVIEW
Used Price: ?179.95
Customer Review: Easy to use
I have had this unit some time now and it is very simple to record and playback programmes. I use the edit features quite a lot and they work well. Very good for downloading from DV camcorder. I would not be without it. My only issue is that it freezes every couple of weeks and I have to power cycle it before it springs back to life so I have missed the odd recording. Thank goodness for the BBC iplayer. However I’m going to try turning off the auto update as helpfully suggested by others. Thanks Mrs J Smith.
Customer Review: RDR-HXD710 freezing (hanging up)
Many thanks to Mrs J. Smith. My HXD710 had been freezing on a daily basis. Three weeks ago I switched off automatic updates as she suggested and haven’t had a problem since.

Customer Review: Misleading, Very Poor Software, Oh and a Car Crash
I simply must write to advise people to seriously consider purchasing one of these, especially for anyone a) not computer literate, or b) a relatively new driver. My partner has been driving 6 months now and had mentioned a few times, despite my trying to convince her to learn to map read, that she wanted sat nav, which culminated in her getting upset at getting lost for a couple of hours one night. Anyway, I bought this product on the back of rationalising that she’d not be distracted reading maps while driving and it had hands-free mobile facilities. First off, the hands-free is a waste of time; it’s got such a terrible mic that you end up shouting and being misheard the whole time. Distracting at best. Secondly, the traffic for life is misleading as its just an RDS aerial, and not the actual TomTom traffic service. Thirdly, the TomTom HOME software is truly awful. As a software developer with a background from a very well-known software company, it is one of the most unreliable and bug-ridden pieces of work I’ve seen since the mid-nineties. Search out the forums to see the issues people are having with it. Finally, the actual device is buggy, too. I’ve witnessed first hand as an experienced driver the misleading directions and told my partner to keep an eye on the map and not to take the spoken directions verbatim. Today, just after the device hung as it received a phonecall, my partner mounted the central reservation and had a puncture while trying to “keep right”, while the map was pointing to a left turn. Probably something an experienced driver would have dealt with, but the poor girl is, as I type, waiting for a tow-truck. The AA said that she “wouldn’t believe the amount of accidents they attend as a result of sat-nav”. If the internet can do anything, it can provide a balanced set of opinions and aid people in making buying decisions, and avoid dissapointment or worse. Therefore, I implore you to consider how bad life was when you had to look at a map and read good ol’ road signs. What a shame.
Customer Review: Excellent !
I was a bit unsure about this sat nav after reading some of the reviews. I would like to say, however, I have not experienced any of the problems some people have. It has worked perfect and I have added an SD card for my music. You do get free trafic info, using the supplied ariel that fits inside your windscreen, but the information you get is patchy. You can upgrade to getting traffic info from TomTom through your mobile phone, but you have to pay a subscription for this. I would say that if you want to use the hands free feature’s on this, then you should check with the TomTom website for your phone’s compatability before buying it. Overall a great unit, and i would highly recommend it.

TOMTOM Go 920 T GPS Europe 4.3″ screen Tactile, Info Traffic TMC Premium (lifetime subscription), Bluetooth Customer Review: tomtom go 920 T
Thanks Rod Peel for your very useful and informative review. It helped us decide in purchasing TOMTOM 920T model, in Feb 08.

We had many problems with loading the “home” software and using it via vista, had to install a few updates before it eventually worked. Mostly found my 920 locking and wouldn’t turn on, the “reset” button sorted this out each time though.

I Strongly recommend you first make backup of your Tomtom before carying out any updates/upgrades via pc/internet, there’s a high chance you just may have to reload your backup!

I too found the volume a bit erratic, particularly in our MPV with kids/radio noise. Mine tends to be set towards the right (maxium), especially on motorway driving. Some instructions have “hic-ups” when announcing the location and road names together and come out fairly low, while others are very loud, even though volume settings hadn’t been changed. I will take Rod Peel’s advise and try linking it to the radio and see what effect that has to the volume level.

Anyone know if the way road names are announced, eg A1054, currently spoken as A-one-thousand, and fifty-four, can be changed to A-1-0-5-4, inastead?

In general, it’s the family’s first satnav and we’re fairly happy with it, would have given a 5 star rating were it not for the small problems we’d had. We look forward to using it in the US on our next fly/drive holiday. In the meantime, back to more manual reading.

Customer Review: The ultimate motoring gadget
The TomTom 920T was available on 7th December (2007) and I had mine delivered that evening. I had previously used TomTom on a PDA (HPx4700) so I was accustomed to all of TomTom’s quirks (yes there are some!) and also a large screen.

First use is intuitive and the software installed easily on my computer. Setup of basic functions (Home address, password, preferences such as voice) was a doddle and I was interested to try out the computer voice which reads road signs and road names to you. Also the ‘operate my TomTom from the computer’ was easy to use and soon had my first ‘Favorites’ set. A brief trawl of the FAQ on the TomTom web site showed me how to transfer my favorite places, new Points of Interest and additional voices from my PDA. I linked my telephone to the unit with ease and in 5 minutes I had transferred my entire phone book. Dialling out and receiving calls is really easy.

I sat in my car for about 15 minutes setting up some of the other functions such as the Traffic RDS system and the FM transmitter (so I can hear the voice through my radio). All worked first time and well. One small downside is that I find the volume control a little erratic and often the shutdown settings are not maintained on startup. However, using the small remote control was the easiest way to put this right.

TomTom’s route planning often leaves something to be desired and, as with my PDA TomTom satnav, it is always a good idea to preview your route on a map before journeying so you have no surprises en-route. The GPS Fix function that is downloaded via the cradle and TomTom Home software means that GPS startup takes a very short time (less than 30 seconds). However you do need to update this every couple of days to ensure freshness.

I haven’t tried out the USA maps yet but I have set up routes in Zurich just as easily as I set up routes in the UK. To say that the maps supplied are the latest means that TomTom take more than a year to record road changes. A particular village bypass and a new roundabout that I use are well past their first birtdays and have yet to appear on the map. TomTom gets confused by this and keeps trying to direct you back to the road in its memory. A free map update is granted but for only 90 days after purchase which seems a little mean to me.

The Mapshare feature was one of the persuaders for my purchase. This seems to be the best thing since sliced bread (what was the best thing before sliced bread?) but I still have not discovered how long it will take TomTom to update their maps and if this will be free to motorists who upload corrections.

Other features such as MP3 playing and photo slide shows await review. It appears that both MP3 files and Picture files must be in a specific directory in internal memory - it’s a pity that they cannot be stored on an external (and swappable) SD card (which can carry extra maps). I would have thought that a change to the software would fix this (TomTom please note!). Also a battery charge level indicator in % or time left would be a bonus.

All in all an excellent device - clear screen, clear voice and (reasonably) accurate performance. All the gadget that you could ever want.

Customer Review: Toshiba
Bought this TV after quite a bit of research, and have been thoroughly pleased, considering the price. The freeview picture is excellent, and the TV guide is easy to use, and looks good as well. The sound is a real improvement on my old LG LCD, and the set up is really easy to use. Playing a DVD also produces a good quanity picture. I cannot think of a single thing that this TV really falls down on.
Customer Review: Fantastic television for the price
I ordered the TV at 3pm on Friday, it arrived Saturday morning. The fastest delivery I have ever had in my life! Less than 24 hours. After studying countless TV’s, and debating Plasma vs LCD I opted for this TV, originally I was going to get a Sony Bravia but when I saw the TV’s side by side in Tesco, the Toshiba looked clearer and sharper than the Sony. This alone made my decision. The price is also a lot cheaper here at Amazon. The TV is easy to setup and very light and has freeview built in. The image quality is slightly pixelated when you get close and sometimes you can see it whilst watching TV. But when I switch my PS3 on the image quality is sharp as ever, pixel perfect with superb colours, DVD’s look awesome as well. It upscales to 1080 as well. All in all, a great TV for the money, you won’t be disappointed.

Customer Review: Stunning
If, like I was, you are dubious about changing from a traditional CRT TV to LCD, don’t be. This is a stunning TV in all respects. Great picture and sound with plenty of scope for adapting to your own personal taste. The styling is simple and attractive and although the TV is significantly larger than the one we had previously, it doesn’t swamp the room in any way. Set up: Very easy. Picture: Plenty of options from subtle to dynamic. Sound: Clear with a good dynamic range. Plenty for most applications. Remote: Very straightforward and ergonomic. Summary: Don’t look any further!
Customer Review: Outstanding 26″ LCD Television
I wasnt sure whether to go the extra mile and pay more for the LXD70 over the LMD70, but I must admit if you can get the LXD70 for around ?70 more than the LMD70 its money well spent. Amazon payment wasnt quite as simple as usual - not sure why but my card was rejected - but delivery was quick and free, so top marks there. I basically bought this TV with the money from a returned Sony KDL26U2000 and the quality is chalk and cheese. The Sony had some motion issues, and backlight buzz which caused me to return it to a major supermarket beggining with T, no sign of that here! I can confirm the reviews I have read so far giving the LDX70 top marks - installation couldnt be easier, wall mounting is simple, and no backlight buzzing or picture issues with this product. Sports and picture panning are dealt with amazing ease. Its even better than my Toshiba 37WLT68P, and that is a 100Hz impressive picture.(just via freeview - yet to buy a HDMI device for the bedroom, but it wont be long!). ***** 5 stars+.

Customer Review: great picture if you can find it
at one hundred pound i thought i was buying a quality piece of kit how wrong i was yes its true the picture quality is top notch unfortunally most of the time you dont have a picture just a message saying no signal even if you stick the aerial outside the window it still has trouble finding the signal bottom line dont buy this unless you have more money then sense total rubbish
Customer Review: tiny TV perfection…
I do find it strange that I can be within a mile of Gatwick Airport (fairly built up area) and only get a 2% signal (which is still enough for a perfect picture anyway on this device), then head off to the New Forest and get a 40% signal when I’m apparently in the middle of nowhere! My experience with portable digital TV is you either get a perfect picture or no picture at all. Not sure that this particular brand is specific to signal problems of that nature though, mine has been perfect so far, as have some friends who also own one. Either way, this little TV has fared extremely well for me and not having had problems with lack of signal, can’t knock any stars off a perfect score. The picture is pretty much perfect (even easily watchable outside during sunny days), news tickers can also be read clearly and believe it or not, you can see the ball when watching golf! (Not a golf fan btw, just pointing out the quality. A final worthwhile example is the kids have been able to watch CITV/Cbeebies etc in the car on the way back from school with no loss of picture at all! (A trip of about 8 miles). The sound is loud enough despite the tiny built in speaker, it fits in my shirt pocket and weighs about the same as my mobile phone. Battery at full volume lasts me about 3 hours, charges in less than 1 hour. 40+ TV channels and digital radio in a unit slightly larger than a pack of cards: I for one am impressed. Just as importantly, my mates are too:-) I can’t knock its performance in and around Surrey and Hampshire though I’d assume there are places it won’t work, (just as with handheld analogue TV) I just haven’t found any yet. A worthy 5 stars.
