TOMTOM Go 920 T GPS Europe 4.3″ screen Tactile, Info Traffic TMC Premium (lifetime subscription), Bluetooth
Customer Review: tomtom go 920 T
Thanks Rod Peel for your very useful and informative review. It helped us decide in purchasing TOMTOM 920T model, in Feb 08.

We had many problems with loading the “home” software and using it via vista, had to install a few updates before it eventually worked. Mostly found my 920 locking and wouldn’t turn on, the “reset” button sorted this out each time though.

I Strongly recommend you first make backup of your Tomtom before carying out any updates/upgrades via pc/internet, there’s a high chance you just may have to reload your backup!

I too found the volume a bit erratic, particularly in our MPV with kids/radio noise. Mine tends to be set towards the right (maxium), especially on motorway driving. Some instructions have “hic-ups” when announcing the location and road names together and come out fairly low, while others are very loud, even though volume settings hadn’t been changed. I will take Rod Peel’s advise and try linking it to the radio and see what effect that has to the volume level.

Anyone know if the way road names are announced, eg A1054, currently spoken as A-one-thousand, and fifty-four, can be changed to A-1-0-5-4, inastead?

In general, it’s the family’s first satnav and we’re fairly happy with it, would have given a 5 star rating were it not for the small problems we’d had. We look forward to using it in the US on our next fly/drive holiday. In the meantime, back to more manual reading.

Customer Review: The ultimate motoring gadget
The TomTom 920T was available on 7th December (2007) and I had mine delivered that evening. I had previously used TomTom on a PDA (HPx4700) so I was accustomed to all of TomTom’s quirks (yes there are some!) and also a large screen.

First use is intuitive and the software installed easily on my computer. Setup of basic functions (Home address, password, preferences such as voice) was a doddle and I was interested to try out the computer voice which reads road signs and road names to you. Also the ‘operate my TomTom from the computer’ was easy to use and soon had my first ‘Favorites’ set. A brief trawl of the FAQ on the TomTom web site showed me how to transfer my favorite places, new Points of Interest and additional voices from my PDA. I linked my telephone to the unit with ease and in 5 minutes I had transferred my entire phone book. Dialling out and receiving calls is really easy.

I sat in my car for about 15 minutes setting up some of the other functions such as the Traffic RDS system and the FM transmitter (so I can hear the voice through my radio). All worked first time and well. One small downside is that I find the volume control a little erratic and often the shutdown settings are not maintained on startup. However, using the small remote control was the easiest way to put this right.

TomTom’s route planning often leaves something to be desired and, as with my PDA TomTom satnav, it is always a good idea to preview your route on a map before journeying so you have no surprises en-route. The GPS Fix function that is downloaded via the cradle and TomTom Home software means that GPS startup takes a very short time (less than 30 seconds). However you do need to update this every couple of days to ensure freshness.

I haven’t tried out the USA maps yet but I have set up routes in Zurich just as easily as I set up routes in the UK. To say that the maps supplied are the latest means that TomTom take more than a year to record road changes. A particular village bypass and a new roundabout that I use are well past their first birtdays and have yet to appear on the map. TomTom gets confused by this and keeps trying to direct you back to the road in its memory. A free map update is granted but for only 90 days after purchase which seems a little mean to me.

The Mapshare feature was one of the persuaders for my purchase. This seems to be the best thing since sliced bread (what was the best thing before sliced bread?) but I still have not discovered how long it will take TomTom to update their maps and if this will be free to motorists who upload corrections.

Other features such as MP3 playing and photo slide shows await review. It appears that both MP3 files and Picture files must be in a specific directory in internal memory - it’s a pity that they cannot be stored on an external (and swappable) SD card (which can carry extra maps). I would have thought that a change to the software would fix this (TomTom please note!). Also a battery charge level indicator in % or time left would be a bonus.

All in all an excellent device - clear screen, clear voice and (reasonably) accurate performance. All the gadget that you could ever want.

Customer Review: Hmmm……
Having had this TV a few days here are my thoughts on it. The picture is bright and bold - though skin tones rarely look natural. On watching movies in a dimly lit room the gloss black case only goes to show that “black” on the picture isn’t quite as black as it should be. Looking even slightly at an angle to the screen this gets worse. Having compared with a few others maybe this is just a feature of LCDs - I’m not sure this one is that much better or worse than similar offerings. The bit that really offends my eye however is there is something very odd going on when things move….whilst you can notice it on normal pictures as moving picture being a bit “blurry” perhaps the proof is on titles which over a certain speed become absolutely illegible (considerably more so than the same material on my old TV and on both analogue and digital signals). So in summary….I’m not glad I bought it. ——— Having submitted my initial review it’s developed a fault (horizontal wobbles on all inputs), and I have returned it.

August DA110BD is a multi-functional personal entertainment centre. It is LCD TV, digital Freeview TV receiver, digital radio receiver, high quality tablet DVD player with slot-in disc loader, media player from SD/MS/MMC memory cards and from an external hard disc via USB port, digital photo displayer and widescreen (16:9) high resolution monitor (800×480 pixels) for other media player or a game console. With stylish state-of-the-art design, outstanding picture and sound quality and user friendly features. It becomes an ideal TV and media player for kitchen, bedroom, caravan, boat and travelers. It can also be connected to a larger screen to output TV, video and digital photos to your home TV. Please note that there may be difficulty to receive Freeview TV signal by the included portable antenna in some areas where the signal is not sufficiently strong at present. This is due to that the Freeview service (www.freeview.co.uk) in the UK is yet full power broadcasting to support portable TV antenna at present. The reception will be improving along with the progress of Digital Switchover Program (http://www.digitaltelevision.gov.uk). A signal amplifier or booster may improve reception capability in regions where the signal is marginally strong. (Please note that reception capability may also be affected by various factors such as proximity to Freeview TV/digital radio transmitters, tall building structures, thick walls, ceilings and etc.). A rooftop TV aerial may be required to watch Freeview channels in regions where the signal is insufficient for a portable antenna.
Customer Review: Fantastic picture quality for such a little unit
This is great unit for the money, the picture quality is unbelievably good. I did struggle to get the freeview channels on the indoor aerial but once connected to the house aerial there was no problem at all. The only thing I would say against it is that if you want to play music DVD’s the sound is a little “tinny” and you may be disappointed but as a tv and dvd (film) player it is brilliant. Not only that it looks good too.
Customer Review: Love it!
I picked this Freeview TV and DVD player after a massive search, it has got quite a number of unique features, which convinced me to go for it, and I am really pleased my choice is right. It has analogue and Freeview tuner built-in, I can get perfect Freeview TVs in my bedroom upstairs using the small antenna supplied, although downstairs in my kitchen the picture is a little bit fuzzy and I have to use the rooftop aerial. The picture quality is brilliant, so does the sound. The multiregion feature plays discs we brought back from States. The TV also has card reader and USB port, so I can view my photos on the TV without my computer. This is a brilliant all-in-one device, and I am really pleased with it.

The DVP-NS57P/S DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony’s Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony’s Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically “warped” discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.

Customer Review: terrible
I bought this in early January 2008. For the first 3 months it has been fine, but over the last month it has progressed from freezing infrequently to not being able to play any disc at all. Now when I place a disc in the player disc it loads for about 10 minutes and then I get a message that the disc is dirty, even if the disc is brand new and absolutely pristine. It’s going directly into the trash bin.
Customer Review: stops working
We loved this DVD player–while it lasted. It was easy to use and the sound and picture quality were both good. But after three months of fairly light use, when we tried to play anything, we got a message saying “no disc”. Nothing we did to fix the problem worked. Sony offered to send us a reburbished model, which would cost $35 plus shipping, which was almost as much as it cost to begin with. Essentially the player and Sony customer support was worthless. But before we just threw the DVD player away, we thought we’d try it one more time. This time the message kept saying “cannot play disc.” The tray that holds the disc is plastic and feels flimsy, which is probably the problem. So after such a short time will have to buy a new DVD player. It certainly won’t be another SONY.

Ellion DVR-960E 250GB HDD DVD Recorder with HDMI output & USB input

Ellion DVR-960E 250GB HDD DVD Recorder with HDMI output & USB input
Customer Review: Shoddy
This is a very poor piece of kit - outwardly it looks the business, but in every other respect it is poor. As with most AV boxes it is entirely controlled from the remote. The buttons are tiny, and stick under the edge of the casing. There are far too many of them. They are too close together. The case of the remote feels very thin, and is unlikely to survive being dropped.

The menus are far too complex, with an apparently random mix of graphics and text. Set up is time consuming and only after VERY close examination of the manual did it become clear that some functions only worked when the disk drawer is open.

The recorder itself doesn’t. Once you have navigated the over complex and unforgiving menu - one mistake and you have to start from scratch and there are approximately 15 items to set to record a single programme - the success rate is poor. I only managed to record 1 programme…… on more than one occasion the recording stopped part way through, and only a full reset of the machine would enable any progress. As has been stated elsewhere, it would not record from DVD to HDD.

The machine is cheap in every sense of the word, and nasty in that it does not do what it says on the tin. Avoid.

Customer Review: Easy to use and Excellent picture quality thru HDMI
The set-up menu is quite user-friendly with region free code setting and many features can be accessed thru one touch remote buttons. Picture quality of DVD films thru HDMI is excellent and even recorded contents thru Scart from my cable box look more sharp when watching thru HDMI. I can definitely see the difference from watching thru Scart connection. I’d love to use Time-shift while watching live TV. Although I have got a vergin media box with HDD, I would use this unit for recording as I can copy recorded contents to DVDs when the HDD is getting full but the Virgin box does not allow me to. Good value as well and highly recommended

Customer Review: OMG - They actually make you pay for this?
I bought one of these machines a week ago, having owned reliable Lite-on machines before. It arrived (from Germany) and worked superbly for 36 hours! It then refused to eject the disc I was playing, and just taunted me with ‘HELLO’ constantly! I emailed the supplier 3 times, and have yet to receive a reply from them. If I do not receive a reply by 10 Feb, I will be making a complaint and a claim to Amazon asking for a full refund! AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID UPDATE! Having made my claim through Amazon, the seller almost immediately made contact with me and arranged to pick up the Recorder. I have now had a full refund (from Amazon) and am awaiting the collection of this overpriced doorstop!
Customer Review: Liteon 5045 - too many problems
My liteon is barely 2 years old - numerous problems. On a number of occasions the hard disc has reformated itself without warning. But the bigger problem is that it will no longer record from hard disc to a DVD of any type. Liteon technical support have not answered a single email to date - and I am informed by a technician that it will be cheaper to just buy a new DVD recorded instead of have it repaired. Shame because the functions were actually quite good.

JVC DR-M10SEK DVD Recorder - Silver
Customer Review: Don’t get me started
….on JVC DR-M’s - I have had 5 in all!!!! either DVD or DVD HDD recorders and each one has developed serious faults. I have had no help, in fact JVC have been confusing, unprofessional and completely uncaring about a machine of theirs which frankly isn’t cheap.

I have had green bleeding in to the picture, “Loading” messages for hours and days on end and have now finally just lost the fifth machine completely

DON’T EVER BUY A JVC DR-M DVD/HDD RECORDER…..EVER

Customer Review: loading….loading
i have returned this unit to jvc 4 times (?20 postage each time) and it always lasts a few months and then gets an error flashing ‘loading…loading’. even after replacing the unit with a new unit each time it still happens so it is a manufacturing fault that jvc do not know how to fix.

when it works….great. i feel however it was a big mistake buying this dvdr.

Customer Review: Buyer be vary aware
I do not normally buy product insurance, but in this case I did. Silly foolish me. The gist of discontent is that I believe this item was mis-sold. All the wording was innuendo and lacked any substance. i.e. Title = 2 year extended warranty.. Product Features: Cover following the the EXPIRY of the manufacturers guarantee. Nether of these statement’s are fully true in that the insurance only provides 1 year extended warranty. Now I was unsure of taking this insurance but I thought this gives me 3 years peace of mind, so if I had a failure of the DVD / VCR combi recorder between 12 and 36 months I would not have to pursue the manufacturer under the Consumer protection legislation as I expect an item of its price and per ported quality to last in full working order for 3 years. After all a large proportion of E.U. manufacturer’s now give 3 year warranty as standard. Also the DVD /VHS combi recorder I purchase on Amazon was a REFURBISHED item and whilst it was new and came with the manufactures 12 month warranty nether the product features nor the policy document refer to this classification although the policy document does say only NEW ( but then you have to buy it to see that). Neither Allianz (the under-writer)or Amazon (insurer) were prepared to state if this classification was covered or not! The fact that Amazon failed to clearly spell out classifications covered and those excluded also what was covered from when until the expiry of the insurance, which would have been so easy to do in the Product features section leaves me questioning the quality of Amazon products and services. After all shouldn’t all product descriptions be clear, unambiguous and factual. Whats easier than saying; *This items is covered for breakdown for a further 12 months after the manufactures warranty expires. *This item is covered for accidental damage for 24 months from date of purchase. *Only New (and Refurbished) items are covered. Used and Second hand items are excluded I shall be terminating this insurance.

Customer Review: Flawless recording and Divx Playback
I am so glad to have taken Ellion 530S. Good value for such features including variety of connections that makes my life easy for connections with TV and other set-top boxes. I have had no problems in having copied so many programs into blank dvds and divx playback is a bonus. Picture quality is quite good and region free setting is handy. Definitely one of the best dvd recorders in the market
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY!!!!
I bought this a while ago, the first one I got didn’t even switch on so they replaced it. The second one worked ok for about 5 months and I have nothing but trouble with it since….it only records when and if IT feels like it - it has no consistancy it reads a disk fine one time and then put the same disk in 2 mins later and it says disk is not compatable! It’s a very expensive DVD PLAYER NOT RECORDER unless you only want it for 5 months. Please save your money a buy a decent one - that’s what I’ve had to do!!!

Customer Review: Works really well
After getting a new I-pod Video classic for christmas, I wanted something so I could listen to it in my Works van and my car, If you have a decent stero this will work well best to go to FM2 or FM3 if you have them as will work better that way I found as not so much interfeance from radio stations on the extra FM frequancy’s.

Though did not work well with my Girlfriends Nano as the barcket to hold it in place pushed it to far away for it to dock in and in her Ford Ka it didn’t work on her standard stero

But I have found on any other car I have put it in it works really well sound was good slight fuzz if listening to pod casts but nothing to get on you nerves,

Also really handy to power up ya I-pod

Only thing is make sure where ever you have your power supply for it that its far enough away from your gear stick as could be a big problem

Customer Review: Okay but seriously flawed
The sound this unit produces is very dependent on the car you have. It wasn’t that good driving round London in a Renault Megane until I removed the car’s external aerial, which seemed improve reception.

However, the main flaw is that 4031 doesn’t fit well inside many cars. If your car’s cigarette lighter sticks horizontally out of the dash, this thing will be too heavy and will fall out. If your car’s cigarette lighter sticks up vertically, you may find that you have issues with the holder being set too close to the dash or too close to the gear lever. Have a good look at the space where this will be mounted and ensure that there is room for it.

Also, the unit is flimsy and it’s difficult to use the iPod when it is in the cradle as it moves around so much and even gentle use of the Click Wheel can be enough to knock the cradle out of the socket.

If you want or need an iPod transmitter, get the Griffin iTrip Auto FM unit, which has a cable that allows you to put the iPod where you want rather than hanging on the cigarette lighter.

aesthetics of iPod video

The aesthetics of the new iPod video
The iPod has been, since its release in 2001, one of the most innovative and popular digital devices in the world. Being produced by a strong brand such as Apple, the iPod became popular in a very short period of time. The popularity of the iPod was owed, besides the practical usage of the actual product, to the original ways of promoting and advertising of the company and, as well, to the aesthetical qualities that the product presented, ranging from the design features to the packaging.

Since the appearance of the product on the market, meaning the first iPod in 2001, the design of the product changed, but not dramatically; still, every model of the iPod came with new features, so the design and the package had to be adapted to these, in order to satisfy the consumers. The most important element that was considered by the creators when establishing the shape of the new device was the perfect proportioning. The new item was supposed to be light and easy, in order to be carried in all sizes of pockets, yet it had to look like a powerful and strong device. Even more, the necessity of providing a stable platform for the controls and the fact that the device was supposed to be managed easily by the customers, lead to the optimization of the perfect size and shape. The result was a device which was the right size in order to be held in the hand without difficulty and managed without effort. In the 5 years of constant research in order to find the right proportion for the iPods, the device ranged between the thickest model, expressed in the 2nd generation of iPods and the almost as thick 4th generation iPod to the more symmetric models of the 1st and 3rd generations.

Following these rules, the first 4 generations of the iPod managed the keep the right proportions that could permit the optimum use of the sound and later on, the photo features (even so, the iPod nano was considered to be too light and fragile). After the launching of the 4th generation of iPods, Apple were preparing to provide a new and even more innovative iPod, which was supposed to have a video feature, as well. At that time, the most significant concern of the producers was the fact that, due to the new iPod features, which had to permit a good visibility and a larger screen, the perfect proportions of the iPod might be ruined. As a result, the last generation of iPods is the thinnest of all; instead, the screen is larger, which allows videos to be watched much better.

Since the original model, the iPod’s height and width have remained the same. Still, the corners of the new iPod video are sharper, in comparison with the rounded edges of the previous models. Even more, the center button of the device is flat, without any convex potions, which characterized the previous models of iPods.

The new iPod video comes in 2 colors: black and white, which adapt well to the color of the package, which is black and silver. With this colors (which are the same as the ones of the iPod`s nano colors), the new device seems improved and more refined. The black iPod has a chrome Apple logo, but the ear buds remain white, for both colors of the main device.

The iPod has been constantly modified in order to establish the perfect size for carrying and listening to music while walking and sometimes dancing. The iPod video presents, besides an obvious technical evolution that allows now watching videos on this small device, a new appearance, with different proportions, which are adapted to the most important request: good visibility. With a larger screen and thinner aspect, the iPod video turns out to be a stylish and aesthetic product, which slightly changes the image of the previous models, yet keeps the brand features intact.
