Sony RDRHXD560S 80GB HDD DVD Recorder with Freeview

Sony RDRHXD560S 80GB HDD DVD Recorder with Freeview
80GB Hard Drive DVD Recorder model with Digital Tuner.

Customer Review: Super piece of kit but slow menu system.
Having previously owned the excellent non-freeview forerunner to this model I didn’t hesitiate in choosing this freeview model so as to cut down on the number of remotes confusing my wife! Absolutely no problems with setup. Made a positive choice for 80GB rather than 160GB - you’re not going to leave stuff you want to keep on the hard drive - you’ll want that on DVD so having more disk just delays that initial cleanup you have to do when the disk is full and you want to record something. 80GB gives plenty of HQ recording time IMO.

My only disappointment is with the speed of response when starting up and from the remote. When in standby, pressing any function will wake it but takes about 30 seconds. Operating the menu system is inexplicably slow when compared to the previous model - e.g. each down-scroll through the title list takes a second or two whereas the non-freeview version was pretty much instantaneous. This is true of any command issued from the remote so can become tedious.

Other than that it is an excellent machine:

- Superb EPG, weeks in advance.

- Series timer that works properly.

- Well designed menu system.

- High speed dubbing and automatic re-formatting if the source is too big for the DVD capacity (4.6GB = 1.5hrs in high quality).

- Low/no noise.

- Separate TV controls on remote.

- Even my wife can program it (no offence ladies) - just make sure you’re clear which device is the target i.e. hard drive or DVD!

Customer Review: Switches off every 5-10 minutes - stay away from this!
It is too late for me to return the product to Amazon, but I will see what I can do with the Sony customer services. I have used it for a month and, with a few minor problems, it has worked OK for 3 weeks. In the last week, however, it keeps switching off VERY frequently. It does so when I watch TV and also when I am watching TV. On the TV, it freezes for a few minutes, so you lose 5 minutes every time it switches off - frozen image, switch off, switch on again and bring it back to the right channel.

I am going back to my cheap freeview box + dvd player. If I cannot return the dvd recorder, I will only use it for the occasional recording, but then it is far too expensive for this!

Customer Review: Good for the price
Bought this dvd recorder as its was a cheap product for me to get my programs off of my sky+ This allows me to plug it into a scart socket, hit record and away it goes. The one thing you need to remember is that it will only burn onto DVD+R and not DVD-R As its a cheap unit it does look a bit plasticy with a giant bit on the front which i can see scratching quickly. Apart from that, for the price you cant beat it and as something for backing up programs you can go wrong with it

Customer Review: Over-rated and very annoying to use
This is my 5th dvd player having previously used 2 Pioneer DVD-Rs, a Mitsubishi Black Diamond and a Chinese generic brand. All the ratings and mags rave about Panasonics, but this machine has been disappointing. I use this side-by-side with a Pioneer DVD-R and am consistently unimpressedd. The upscaled picture is not what I expected - I run DVDs through my old Pioneer using component cables and it is better than the Panasonic though the HDMI. The on-screen menus are horrible - very hard to follow and not intuitive at all. It takes forever to do anything like editing a recording, or trying to record from HDD to DVD. The Pioneer is much clearer and easier to use - a real delight of sensible design. The controller is also awful - very clunky and stiff. Buttons often do not respond until they have been depressed firmly for the 10th time. It takes ages to do anything using the controller as it is so poor. It is also very badly set out and requires constant reference to the guide book to know what to do. It is also unattractive to look at, though this is a minor point, but is consistent with the poor design throughout.
Customer Review: Remember playback
I love many features on this recorder the hard drive is brill, I have a few problems though but a no one has mentioned them so am not sure if it is just me not able to find them. This machine always starts a DVD from the beginning it does not remember where I was up to some machines remember the last 20 DVDs that were played so when you put them in it starts where you left off and gives you the option to go to the start if you wanted to. I can’t find how to turn on the VPS/PDC, I find the manual not very good not as good as the recorder.

Customer Review: Returned 3 units under warranty in one month - now on number 4
The 3 returned units either did not record on a DVD+R or did not play a VCR properly: the VCR picture kept breaking up. The unit I have now seems to work. However I cannot recommend this model for obvious reasons.
Customer Review: Promises more than it delivers
I bought this unit when my AIWA VCR died. I want to be able to transfer mini-DV to DVD, record onto DVD from TV and play my video collection. First off, the VCR playback quality is surprisingly poor. I just wouldn’t use this unit to transfer a video to DVD - you might as well just buy the DVD second-hand. Also, the picture you see with video playback is the digitised image, so you get the combination of video distortion with digital distortion. I have also experienced the poor auto-tracking that the other user mentioned. So, this part is a major disappointment. DVD recording from TV seems to be fine. However, one annoying thing is that it gives you multiple recording quality options, but doesn’t tell you how much time you can record for using a particular quality. So you end up guessing. Secondly, when I record onto DVD-RW, I can’t fast-forward or backward with the picture, sound or even timer. You just have to guess when to press play and see where it drops you back. Haven’t yet tried transferring from mini-DV. In summary, I’m a bit disappointed by this unit. I’m seriously considering buying a second-hand VCR to watch my videos on, which kind of defeats the object of buying it in the first place.

Panasonic DMR-ES20DEBS DVD RAM Disc Recorder
Used Price: ?74.49
Customer Review: 6 months then bang
I purchased the Panasonic recorder because it had good reviews and also did all the things I wanted - play DVDs’ ,record plus freeview all in one neat box. But all I had is trouble. From the start the machine would not keep any preferences when it is turned off, so it has to remain on all the time unless the machine decided to turn it self off - for a self check - which it does, often. Now 7 months since purchase it no longer records or plays any disk! DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE - YOU WILL WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Customer Review: Clever but complicated
This is a very clever machine with all these recording options but it takes a while to understand how to do things. I don’t find the remote or the menus very intuitive and had to read the manual several times to find out how to do things. Panasonic’s bumph convinced me that RAM disks were a great idea so I bought loads but then found out they don’t work in other DVD players! Am I expecting too much? If Apple can make computers easy to use why can’t someone make DVD recorders easy to use? Still it works fine and it’s great to have Freeview built in.

Customer Review: Why have separate SACD & DVD Audio players ?
I’ve owned this DVD player for a couple of months and I am still astounded by how many functions it does. It’s almost as if Pioneer can sense the end of the standard DVD player (for replacement by HDDVD or BluRay) and have thrown everything into it. For a start off there is the HDMI upscaling socket, an essential connection for those of us getting HD Ready flat screens. Sure the picture through such a connection isn’t as good as HDDVD/BluRay but is a massive improvement from Scart connection. But if it’s just a HDMI multi-region player you’re after then you can get cheaper than this. What swung me in favour of this player is not only DVD-Audio playback but also SACD playback in the same player. You’ll need an amp with 6-channel analogue input for connection from the 6 analogue outputs on the player. But boy does this player sound great once connected. There are so many menu options for set-up e.g. Speaker Size, Distance From Listener This might make it sound difficult to set up but it’s not. I’m just saying that there are plenty of options to tweak with to get that optimum sound and picture. That’s without mentioning that there is a USB socket on the front so you can listen to downloaded mp3 files. And the whole thing is packaged into a slimline player that won’t hog up your shelf space. For the price you’re getting an absolute bargain and this particular one is multi-region so should play anything.

Customer Review: Alot better than the deluxe leather
I originally purchased the deluxe leather case for my 520 but found that it didn’t fit and so the catch wouldn’t close at all. I took it straight back to Curry’s. After reading the mixed reviews for the zip case I still proceeded to purchase one as I decided my tom tom was in danger of being damaged. I was and still am delighted with this product. I can’t understand how people are braking the zip. Your tom tom will only fit in one way so I can only assume that they were forcing the zip and only have themselves to blame! Get this now to protect your tom tom!
Customer Review: 720 fits snuggly and is well protected
720 fits into the case easily and the case zips up easily too. My zip hasn’t broken yet and the case seems hard wearing. Although I’ve only had it a couple of months I’d say I’m pretty pleased.

Panasonic 26″ HD Ready LCD TV with Integrated Digital Tuner

Customer Review: Stunning
If, like I was, you are dubious about changing from a traditional CRT TV to LCD, don’t be. This is a stunning TV in all respects. Great picture and sound with plenty of scope for adapting to your own personal taste. The styling is simple and attractive and although the TV is significantly larger than the one we had previously, it doesn’t swamp the room in any way. Set up: Very easy. Picture: Plenty of options from subtle to dynamic. Sound: Clear with a good dynamic range. Plenty for most applications. Remote: Very straightforward and ergonomic. Summary: Don’t look any further!
Customer Review: Outstanding 26″ LCD Television
I wasnt sure whether to go the extra mile and pay more for the LXD70 over the LMD70, but I must admit if you can get the LXD70 for around ?70 more than the LMD70 its money well spent. Amazon payment wasnt quite as simple as usual - not sure why but my card was rejected - but delivery was quick and free, so top marks there. I basically bought this TV with the money from a returned Sony KDL26U2000 and the quality is chalk and cheese. The Sony had some motion issues, and backlight buzz which caused me to return it to a major supermarket beggining with T, no sign of that here! I can confirm the reviews I have read so far giving the LDX70 top marks - installation couldnt be easier, wall mounting is simple, and no backlight buzzing or picture issues with this product. Sports and picture panning are dealt with amazing ease. Its even better than my Toshiba 37WLT68P, and that is a 100Hz impressive picture.(just via freeview - yet to buy a HDMI device for the bedroom, but it wont be long!). ***** 5 stars+.

Customer Review: An excellent player, but somewhat overrated.
From the reviews around the net, you’d think this player would walk your dog and do your dishes. But, sorry to say, nothing’s that good; and certainly not for $70. Admittedly, I am impressed with the player. Build quality seems to be pretty good. The player is quite quiet compared to others. And the on-screen menu system is also fantastic. But… Pioneer seems to have gone out of their way to make unlocking the region coding for this player harder than it needs to be. And for some people, that is a pretty big ding. If you’re buying this player for basic use, it’ll do you proud. But if you’re looking for something that will play anything and everything from anywhere, you may want to look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Regular dvd player
Easy enough to work dvd player. Had to fiddle around with the menu to set it to 1080p (does not start as default). Upconverting does improve signal slightly, but its not that amazing. It seems to depend on age of dvd its upconverting (ie old movies still don’t get the crystal clear/sharp signals of new cgi type movies)

Customer Review: OK
MP3 player itself is good. What wasn’t listed was that you have to buy a charger for it separately. Also, I had clicked the option for a gift message which WAS NOT in the delivered item. As I said, the MP3 works fine. Arrived in good time - a little later than said, though.
Customer Review: Great little player
My partner and I both had one of these for xmas. I have used creative before previously having a nano plus but wanted something smaller and with more storage. Again creative is easy to use with just drag and drop for the music though you can download the software if you want to which is also very simple to use. I would recommend buying a skin with it to keep it protected as my last creative got marked so much. great price too as much cheaper than its competitor ipod shuffle and more capacity for your money. Overall a brilliant and easy to use player. very happy.

Customer Review: Very reliable at such bargained price
It looks so smart with slim size cabinet and can fit anywhere so nicely. The 250GB HDD capacity just gives me peace of mind on storage capacity of recorded TV contents as I know that I could be able to store so many hours of contents into HDD section not having to worry about copying onto DVDs from time to time. Timer-recording has worked out well without having missed any single scheduled ones and copying from HDD to DVD has performed well. Nicely built-in connections such as two scarts in & out, Componnets, Audio and Video. Picture quality is excellent. I am 100% convinced that it must be a excellent choice in terms of price, quality, design etc. I have never seen any smart-looking branded recorders like this and they all look like bricks compared to this.
Customer Review: The best thing I have ever bought
I came across Ellion when I was looking for an HD/DVD recorder. The leading makes were too expensive and the Ellion was the right price, had the required functions - a big hard drive capacity, numerous recording facilities, timeslip etc - and looked great. I’ve had one for around 18 months and I wouldn’t be without it. At first, I started using the timeslip function regularly, until a friend who bought one on my recommendation told me that you can watch a ‘live’ recording from the start. This meant that you were watching something while it was recording and it was permanently stored on the hard drive, unlike timeslip, which merely stores the programme in a temporary cache. I once accidentally hit the stop button on the remote while watching a timeslip recording and lost it forever. Remember, timeslip enables you to use pause or rewind/fast forward, but not stop; that literally erases the recording. By recording conventionally, the programme is always on the hard drive. It just takes a while to figure it out. Otherwise, the Ellion is a seriously brilliant piece of kit. Great looks, great functions, great price. For a manufacturer that isn’t one of the ‘big boys’ they deserve a lot of credit.

Customer Review: Good but not perfect
Everything works as specified but… 1. DVD drive is noisy when playing and recording, I can sometimes hear the motor noise over quiet parts in a film which is annoying. 2. The layer change pause on purchased films is very long, much worse than my older Sony DVD player. 3. On screen menus and graphics are not consistent between all features, it appears Panasonic have thrown together the software from some of their other products into this box. 4. The DTT guide has no search. 5. Remote control could be simpler, several buttons have very similar functions.
Customer Review: disappointing …
Already have a Panasonic hard-drive dvd recorder (EX75)downstairs, and it’s superb. I bought the EZ47 for the bedroom, and also because I wanted to transfer some of my videos onto dvd. Disappointed for 2 reasons: 1. It suddenly bursts into life in the middle of the night, whirring away for several seconds and waking us both up. I can’t find any apparent reason for this. 2. Although it boasts no loss of picture quality when transferring from video onto dvd, the fact is that if you watch any video on a lovely new flatscreen tv - the picture quality is rubbish anyway. The dvd copies are therefore rubbish as well. I hadn’t realised this before, having only watched dvds on the flatscreen. Video is very old-tec now,and doesn’t stand up to the new tv technology. This copying function was therefore a waste of time for me, as video-quality film is unwatchable on my telly.

Customer Review: Oh dear, what a huge disappointment!
Our old video recorder started to give up the ghost so we decided to join the 21st Century and go DVD. Based on the reviews this machine seemed just the job as, as well as updating our recording media, it would allow us to retain our favourite videos on DVD. Unfortunately, as we eagerly replayed our first attempt at DVD recording we found the picture quality was truly dreadful: beetrooty orange coloured human faces, bleeding reds and areas of fuzzy definition. Tests with commercially recorded videos and DVDs showed no improvement whereas re-connecting up the failing 17 year old Sony presented us with perfect pictures (its the sound that was failing!)- so it wasn’t our telly. Frankly, the picture reproduction quality was unwatchable so we immediately arranged to return the machine and have now purchased a Panasonic which reproduces superbly. Maybe we just got a bad example but I certainly wouldn’t want to try another.
Customer Review: It gets the job done.
While difficult to set up on my ancient (as far as technology goes anyway) portable television, once set up it is a thing of beauty. It is simple to use and does exactly what it says on the box. I purchased this to copy VHS tapes to DVD, and while there is some crackling in the sound and a black border on one side of the picture on some of the copies, the technology itself is swift, quiet and little quality is lost. And it’s all done at the touch of a button! It is invaluable in further preserving those old family memories from a format with a short life expectancy to something more lasting. I can’t say I’ve tried the competition, but I would highly recommend this if it claims to do what you want it to do. It may be pricey, but it’s a worthwhile investment.

This machine give a great picture through the HDMI, and plays Divx very well. That’s about it for the good stuff….. I’ve had the dvdr5500 about a month now, and I’m less than impressed. It freezes very easily, doing the simplest things such as turning the machine on or off or going to the Home menu, and the only way out is to cut the power at the plug, which means you lose all your settings (e.g. HDMI output level). That is the biggest problem. The interface is also VERY slow to respond, taking seconds to respond to even one button push, which frustrates you in to pushing more buttons which - you guessed it - causes it to freeze up! Apparently the machine keeps the disc spinning when left in the tray, even when turned off, which means the motor burns out quickly. This is just what I’ve heard, but the `Eco’ mode you can turn on presumably stops/reduces this, but means the machine takes a full minute to load up (its not exactly snappy when the Eco mode is off either though). Recording is sporadic - not a single recording I have made using the TV guide has worked properly, always missing either the beginning or the end of the programme. The aspect ratio is always messed up as well. A final thing is the standby light, which is so incredibly bright that I have to have it covered when watching TV in a darkened room or else it is very distracting! In all, this is going back to Richer Sounds. It’s the only machine I have found which does everything I want, but unfortunately it is a typical Philips in that it is very poorly made. The remote is so cluttered and ill-though out that you are always pushing the wrong button or thinking you’ve pushed something when you haven’t. DON’T BUY THIS!!!!
Customer Review: Not what it promises to be…
Wanted a DVD recorder with built-in Freeview, saw this and thought, “Wow! Has upscaling, USB port for flash drive reading, looks stylish, and cheap too!”. This all may be true, but what I didn’t know until I got it home and set it up was how irritating it is to use! The menu system is very unresponsive, taking literally several seconds to respond to a simple ‘down’ on the remote. As a result, it can take minutes to scroll down a few pages of the Program Guide. The firmware needs some serious de-bugging. I had this unit no more than 2 days, and it ‘froze’ on me more than six times. Each time I was doing nothing more complicated than accessing a DVD, viewing pitcures from my USB pen, or simply browsing the Program Guide for something to watch! The only solution when it hangs is to pull the plug (even says so in the manual) as there’s no power switch. But the worst thing for me was the image aspect ratio distortion. Digital broadcasts displayed beautifully when watched live, but if recorded to DVD then played back they would be stretched vertically, making them totally unwatchable. Oddly, setting the TV Shape option to Widescreen (I have an older PAL 4:3 screen), would correct the playback distortion problem, but render live broadcasts as vertically stretched instead. On the plus side, the interface looks very swish, the DVD recording quality is excellent, and upscaling to 1080 is well performed. The facia is very stylish, and the front USB and DV ports are neatly hidden behing a flip-down panel. You can’t pause live TV with this unit though, which I presumed you could - my fault for not reading the specifications! I performed a firmware upgrade, downloaded from Philips web-site, which was very easy to do. Although I only had the unit setup for another hour or so, I didn’t experience any more ‘freezing’ of the interface. Customer service, if you need it, is rubbish - I posted a query regarding the aspect ratio distortion, and am yet to get a response, over two weeks later. I’ve also heard that these machines keep the drive spinning, even in standby mode, if you leave a disc in. Philips customer service have themselves admitted you ought to remove any discs from the machine when not in use, otherwise it burns out the motor in about 6 months. Seems so ridiculous I can believe it! Summary: I returned mine. This machine looks great, promises the world, but leaves you pulling your hair out. Philips DVD recorders have been dogged with problems for quite a number of years, and this one is no better. Pay a little more and buy a Panasonic or Sony.

Customer Review: A few questions answered…
Like me, you’ve probably read the blurb and still have a few questions - hopefully the following will help!

- Yes, these maps do work perfectly with other versions of the Tomtom One. I’ve got the One V2 Regional which was UK only. The software seems very well integrated with the Tomtom Home PC software, all I needed to do was hook up the unit, pop in the DVD and select the maps I wanted to install from the Tomtom Home software screen. The DVD package includes a product card code, which when entered gave a prompt to visit the ttcode.com website. This generates a separate key code - enter that and everything works a treat.

- The DVD contains the various country specific maps, also it contains country specific maps with main routes of Europe and as well contains a single map of the whole of Europe.

- The amount of maps which you can fit on your SD card will depend upon it’s size and also any extra POIs or voices you use. I managed to fit UK, France, Iberia, Canary Islands and Germany on a single 1GB card. However the detailed single map of Europe is over 900MB, so would need a 2BG card.

- Final key question - are these the latest maps? Answer:no, but then again were you expecting to pay 24GBP for a product which if bought direct from the Tomtom website would be 100Euro for the single detailed map of Europe download or 60Euro each for the single country maps? This DVD, which is copyrighted 2006, contains a slightly older version of the maps but has the added flexibility of a wide range of combinations of individual country maps. The latest version on the Tomtom website at the time of this review is 6.75, whereas the versions on the DVD I received (July 07)are at 6.5.

For me, the reduced price and the fairly infrequent times I’ll be using the maps makes the lack of some new road changes an acceptable trade-off. As they say, you pay your money and take your choice.

I’ve rated this 4 out of 5 only because of the not-latest-issue factor, but I still consider great value for money, it does what it says on the tin.
