Customer Review: Amazed by this product
Just received my Rice Cooker today & could not resist trying out tonight.

I know I have only used it once but wow. East to use rice cooked for 3 people in under 20mins to perfection. Could not belive how good it is.I’ve learn some Indian cooking and my rice always let the meal down. Not from now on. As previous users have said treat yourself. I took their advise and going to bed tonight pleased I did (and will get up tomorrow and go to the supermarket & stock up on Rice) This is one kitchen appliance that will get plenty of use. And at this price it is a bargin as I have seen it at ?15 more elsewhere. A Must buy.

Customer Review: Keep it on the top..You will use it often.
All too often we buy yet another gadget to add to our kitchen and then find that it disappears out of sight. This is one that I use contantly. Stew type dishes come to mind straight away because the food ends up being so tender and the taste is great because the cooking is contained in the pot. You can therefore, use the cheaper cuts of meat with great success

It is absolutely great for when you have guests. I prepare food in the slow cooker before they come and then I can then spend time enjoying the visit. Recently, we all went on a picnic and returned home to a hot supper stew with crusty bread. It was so appreciated. Another event was a party where I was nominated for producing a curry dish. I took the slo-cooker with me and it finished the cooking whilst we were all having fun.

One of the reasons I chose this model was because of the clip down lid. (My old crockpot tipped all it’s contents into the boot of my car)It is not just for stew type dishes though. You can produce a whole chicken or joint of meat in it very successfully and puddings too!. There are hundreds of recipes out there on the internet under the heading of crockpot or slo-cooker so you will never be stuck for ideas. I do use the porridge maker too. In 9 minutes you have your porridge made. Just throw the ingredients in the pot press the button and hey presto!!(just time to take a shower)

Like the other owners, I have found the rice cooker great. I often make a bigger batch and freeze what I don’t use on the day.

I have no hesitation in saying that this is worthy of the 5 stars that I have awarded it.

DVD RECORDER WITH INTERGRATED DIGITAL TUNER WITH HDMI UPSCALLING TO 1080I.
Used Price: ?50.00
Customer Review: Absolute Tosh
There are 3 things wrong with this product: 1. It is extremely user unfriendly (very complicated menus and bewildering options, including cryptic symbols that appear on the “Display” menu - great if you wear an anorak indoors and prefer browsing through the DVD manual to actually watching anything you’ve recorded). 2. The Freeview box works fine but when you record things it invariably records them in aspect ratio 4:3 and it is impossible to then play them back in 16:9 (I have a Sony HD ready widescreen tv). I’ve experimented with the aspect ratio settings (trying “Auto” and “16:9″ to no effect). 3. Perhaps the worst thing is the picture quality. It’s okay on SP - 2 hours per disc but there is no LP or, to be exact, what Toshiba call “LP” is really what other manufacturers call “EP” and gives you 4 hours per disc. This is annoying as many films are around two and a half hours long and LP is a good option to record them with. However, Toshiba’s “LP” (really EP) quality is terrible (worse than my old ?75 LiteOn DVD recorder) and it really isn’t worth recording anything at this setting. For some bonkers reason Toshiba have included there own “EP” (6 hours per disc) and “SLP” (8 hours per disc) but you’d have to be insane, blind or just a fan of low quality, blurry, pixelated crud (usually in 4:3 - ho, ho) to want to cram that much onto a disc. So, don’t waste your money. Buy something with a real LP option that also gets the aspect ratio right. This is the worst piece of technology I’ve ever bought!
Customer Review: not that impressed (yet)
I’ve only had this player 2 days but I must say my first impressions are not that great. On paper this machine seems to do everything, but I took a risk buying it as I couldn’t find any reviews for it online. My first comment is that it’s so s……l……o…….w. Put in a DVD movie and it takes an age for the menu to appear. Once playing a movie things are not much better. The 1080p upscaling (via HDMI) seems to work - however Iam not sure it’s any better than the xbox360 over VGA. The user interface looks dated and again is very slow to nativate around. I’ve yet to attempt any recording, but I hope it will score better in that area! So far only 3 stars (for HDMI output and styling).

Customer Review: Nightmare on Comet Street
This m/c will be JUNK when analogue is phased out. Why is it still being sold?
Customer Review: Great product for non freeview digital users
Got this product as we have virgin cable and wanted something that could record onto a hard disc, which pretty much rules out everything with a built in freeview tuner. Had the product set up in minutes, plug in the scart from the digi box and the other to the TV and thats it! The recording buffer which automatically records whatever you’re watching is fantastic. Watched a DVD and found that the hard disc had recorded what was on the digi box which was great. Easy to rewind and pause live TV. Fully recommended. Would get 5 stars if I could work out how to set the default channel to the decoder scart! Fantastic.

Definately backward step and encountering similar problems to your other 1 star reviewers- frustrating slow response to button presses when going through “guide”, recorded programs (when recorded!) names not stored so have to manually rename. Timings wrong when setting from guide..etc…etc. I just can’t rely on this machine. In the process of trying to get my money back!

Daewoo DF4150 Multi-region Capable DVD Recorder +RW & VCR Combination with MP3 and JP
Customer Review: Conspiracy theory!
This is too much of a coincidence. My Daewoo was absolutely fine, as per all the positive reviews until I got to just short of having it for fourteen months (last week). It has now decided to do exactly as someone else has mentioned and report that there is “no signal” and after having checked and replaced all the various connections I began to realise that I had wasted my money. It was good, if a little slow and clunky, when it worked, but now it is just a useless piece of junk that is probably going to end up in the skip. Well done, Daewoo - you saw me coming!
Customer Review: Your Cookoo to buy Daewoo!
The Daewoo DF4150 despite very little use broke beyond repair just 14 months after purchase! The DVD refusing to function at all beyond the opening and closing of the disc drawer. During the 14 months I used the machine I found the creation of DVD chapters/menus very difficult the procedure being non-logical at best. The menu screens created looked very basic and amateurish. The instruction manual was poorly written and of little help. The picture quality from VHS tape recorded onto DVD was average to poor, this I suspect being due to the poor quality of the VHS components i.e. tape heads etc. Their was also a great deal of excessive on screen noise on the play back of VHS tapes. This Daewoo has had its day!

Customer Review: Samsung F1080 upscaler
After reviewing upscailing dvd players for a week or so i finally settled on this little belter. Very straight forward to set up and soon had diehard 4 on my panasonic th37px80b. The picture was astounding very crisp and great image detail. I will not be buying a blu-ray player now ive got this. The only reason i never gave this unit 5 stars is that when you use the touch sensitive keys it makes a high pitch beep, which i cant work out for the life of me why samsung would include this feature and not allow you to disable this in the set up menu. That said your not going to be pressing buttons throughout the film are you. Had the sound (digital output) to my pure digi theater 5.1 surround sound system and sound is as good as anything i have heard. Bass verygood response and speech nice and clear. If you have just purchased a hd tv and the wife would hit the roof at the mere mention of purchasing a blu-ray player then this is the ideal solution, i promise you wont feel like you have compromised.
Customer Review: Beautiful design but (currently) lacking a region-free hack
The reason I asked for this for my birthday was because I loved the looks! I also have a Samsung laptop (Q70) and the lid of the laptop and the top of the dvd player have the same sleek black design. The soft-touch buttons on the top of the unit are a very nice addition (although there is an annoying high pitched beep when one uses those buttons). My biggest criticism of this DVD player is that there is no region-free hack for current models. I was under the impression from a previous reviewer on here that one existed. However, it doesn’t - Samsung have updated the firmware on the player and there are no downloadable versions online (although it is possible that this will change in the future). Having region-freedom is very important to me as I have quite a few region 1 DVDs. The picture and sound from this unit are good, I would not expect anytihng less, combined with the lovely design I rate this 3*. While it’s not Samsung’s fault there isn’t a region fix out there, I would have liked to know this before I bought it!

Toshiba RDXV47 160Gb HDD/DVD/VHS Recorder

Toshiba RDXV47 160Gb HDD/DVD/VHS Recorder
Customer Review: Very good for the money but some issues
As the other reviews say this unit is very good functional value for money and once you’ve sorted the connections (see below) very easy to use. It disappoints slightly with its rigid enforcement of region and copyright controls as you cannot copy your old videos to the hard disc and we had to buy a supplementary multiregion player to play current DVDs.

The big surprise though was its bizarre feature/design fault where many of the output options do not support VHS playback. You are not warned in the spec or the instructions (and even the Toshiba help line were no use). If for example you connect using the S-Video output you cannot play VHS videos and you (and the helpline) will think the unit is broken. So use the SCART output and IF you have a spare SCART input left, all will be fine

Customer Review: Witchraft!
A am approaching 40 years old and therefore officially unable to operate even the most basic form of home entertainment system, let alone one with so many functions as the Toshiba RDXV47 (I mean, “RDXV47″, its name alone is your guarantee you’ll never get any of it to work….I feared the worst even when I was adding to my Amazon basket). But, for reasons I still don’t fully understand, I can actually get everything on this machine to work. What’s more, I pretty much got them all to work, first time out of the box, with very little reference to the manual. The folks at Toshiba have produced something that is intuitive, and actually makes everything easy. Honest.

To install it, I drew a quick diagram of what my old DVD player was already plugged into what (TV, games console, Sky box), then unplugged my old DVD player, plugged in the RDXV47, switched everything back on and…it all still worked, and the Toshiba just automatically tuned itself in. Then I put in a VHS home movie, pressed play and then hit the ‘dub’ button and…..recorded my old VHS tape onto the hard disk. Then I put in a blank DVD, formatted it (following the simple on-screen instructions) started playing back the home movie from the hard disk and pressed ‘dub’ again. The machine recorded the movie straight onto the DVD. I kept telling myself it shouldn’t be this easy. I have now transferred all of my precious and fragile VHS footage (wedding, children, etc.) onto DVD and the HDD with zero stress or frustration. The machine had paid for itself already.

Then the ultimate test - setting the timer to record something. Normally impossible for VCRs - tradition dictates you press 19 buttons in the strictly prescribed sequence, then switch the timer on and still either record the wrong channel at the wrong time…or record nothing. Not so here. It’s all just dead straight forward and works every time. I have not missed a baseball game this season, and can fit hundreds of them on the big HDD, especially if I record in Long Play mode.

The machine also records TV programmes onto the hard disk at the single touch of a button (handy if a programme comes on and you want to record it straight away…no searching for blank tapes), it also plays back AVIs and DIVX movies. I cannot rate this device highly enough - it does everything you need it to do, and does it so simply and intuitively…even for men of a certain age.

Panasonic DMR-EX95 - 250gb Hard Drive DVD Recorder & VCR Combination - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview - Silver
Used Price: ?334.99
Customer Review: Versatile but complicated
After many hours of frustration I finally managed to get my Loewe Planus TV, Panasonic satellite receiver and this Panasonic DMR-EX95 DVD/VHS/HD recorder to work together. The wiring-up diagram in the manual didn’t work and was different from that suggested by the Panasonic satellite receiver’s manual! I also have the Panasonic DMR75V DVD/VHS recorder so am familiar with many of the functions, but I still found the plethora of features daunting. I’m sure I’ll never use many of them. Good points: having an all-in-one box to play and record video tapes, DVDs and lots of hours on the Hard Drive. Also helpful is the automatic starting of commercial DVDs and videos so you don’t have to fiddle around to find the correct drive. The handset has bigger and easier to read numerals on the buttons and there’s more use of coloured buttons. Bad points: the awe-inspiring complexity of the features; the difficulty in seeing the status lights on the front of the machine, for example, the display on the device to tell one which drive is operating is very small and unreadable at a few feet of distance. The only way is to recognize that the tiny blue image means the Hard Drive; orange the VHS; red the DVD and yellow the SD function. I can barely tell the difference, at a distance, between the DVD and VHS display. On the DMR75 there is a button for DVD and a button for VHS. It would be much better to have four buttons on the handset for this DMR-EX95 rather than having to decipher at a distance which colour is displayed. I wonder about people who are colour blind. I’m sure that in a few weeks I’ll be happier with the machine, but it’s an up-hill battle. Here are a few tips I’ve discovered subsequent to the review above: If you’re wanting to use the Sky Planner facility with External Link, you can only watch something recorded on the same drive as the proposed recording and you can’t watch a video if you want to record on a DVD or the HD. The way round this is to select the programmes in the Sky Planner, in order to switch on the corrects channels, and then using the timer programme facility on the recorder type in the satellite channel (eg SAT06) as the channel to be recorded for each programme and type in the date, start and stop times and the choice of drive for each programme separately. (A good thing about the recorder is you don’t then have to remember to press a timer button.) With this, albeit rather cumbersome method, you can record on one drive and view on another and also record a sequence of different satellite channels with the Sky Planner doing the switching as the recorder can’t do this.

Improvising Blues Piano: The Basic Principles of Blues Piano Explained for the Intermediate-level Pianist in an Easy-to-grasp Fashion (The Schott Pop Styles Series)

Improvising Blues Piano: The Basic Principles of Blues Piano Explained for the Intermediate-level Pianist in an Easy-to-grasp Fashion (The Schott Pop Styles Series)
Customer Review: Learning to improvise
I must disagree with the reviewer who thinks that this is simply learning by rote. If you actually work through the book, it gives you a number of exercises where you do have to use your own creativity and understanding. For someone like me who came from a classical background, this book was an excellent way of helping me let go of the printed page.I still found it difficult, but each chapter in this book gives you something tangible to work on. It is not simply “go and do it by yourself”

Customer Review: Ignore the above review
The guy above reviewing the book obviously didn’t give it the time of day and has written a potentially damaging review about something he knows nothing about.

The writer of this book instructs and encourages ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO IMPROVISE AND CREATE YOUR OWN PIECES.

Yes he gives songs and musical transcripts to play, they are simple at first and get progressively longer and more complicated once the principles have been well practised. But they are simply starting points for his instructions on the same page. You need a context to learn in and he has provided lots of them.

He teaches you to teach yourself, there is ample opportunity to learn and improvise and do your own stuff throughout right from the beginning. I was excited at my progress after th efirst two pages of the book and it never tapered off now I’ve worked through two and a half chapters.

He even teaches you how to create your own solos and gives well-used ‘devices’ to make something sound good, that starts right from page 1. These devices were used by professional blues performers even to this day.

The writer himself is a performer, and is a teacher at an established music school. He uses his teaching experience in the book that much is obvious. Don’t buy any other book but this one because it’s well deserved.

This book is something marvellous. I knew nothing before I started, I have learned more from this book in 7 months than I have in 8 years of tinkering around myself.

Customer Review: How to avoid the “C:13 and a message saying ‘The Disc is Dirty.” error.
I currently have a HX510 which is great and i have with-held upgrading this unit for the simple fact that the newer models do not have the record pause function which is for me a major plus (and why oh why cant Sony have decent picture search speeds like all other dvd players and indeed their own players?) x1.5 too slow, x2 umm the best your gonna get and x3 too fast. Anyway, to resolve the issue of the “C:13 and a message saying ‘The Disc is Dirty.” error this seems to be caused by using 16x dvd discs (which are now more commonly available). I’ve switched to using x8 speed discs from Woolies and they record using high speed dubbing all the time. 16x discs produce the “C:13 error. i think the manual actually says something about 8x being the max. Hope that helps others and just sorry i didn’t this review earlier as by the sounds of it, it would have saved alot of frustration for others. Otherwise a great machine with superb picture quality Oh and re the unreliable videoplus timer recordings…. just check the auto date & clock setting is correct (ie the date and time are correct) - changing it from eg ITV to BBC1 or just turn it off to manual and then auto again under the system menu and the clock settings will re-set the date and time and *should* allow it to work properly again
Customer Review: HXD710 Don’t buy it
I have had this for about 18 months and for the last 6 months yep just out of warranty it freezes all the time. Sony are worse than useless the help desk is a joke. This is a software problem you would really expect them to produce a patch for it. Jeff Gill
