Customer Review: Good idea but bad product
I bought one of these recorders in February to transfer VHS home movies to DVD but liked the fact that it was also a standalone recorder with Freeview. Had many problems - machine insisting no TV aerial present or its scan not finding channels. Without mastering this initial setup process it is not possible to move on to transfer tapes. The machine kept ‘freezing’ or ‘locking up’and having to be reset by switching off the mains current. This usually occurred every second day, but sometimes several times on the same day. It also ‘froze’ during transfer of tapes. One could not be certain it would record any TV programs using either the electronic program guide, manual timer, or instant record. It gave mixed messages as to whether a DVD was compatible or not - recording on it one time and rejecting the same disc on the next. I returned it to the suppliers (not Amazon unfortunately). Eventually and after hassle, I was sent a new machine. Guess what? Yes, it still appears to have similar problems and I see from the Web reviews this is not unusual! Given the price and the fact that when it works it is really good, I will probably keep it for occasional use although I am consulting with trading standards about my options. I would not recommend this machine.

Locks up every day which then requires setting up from scratch. Told to update firmware but trying that locks it up every time, shop advises to contac Daewoo for direct support, Daewoo support for this item non existent. Can’t set reminders for programmes other than to record. Cannot view tv whilst in EPG contrary to manual. Bad buy.

I bought this machine for about ?100 around 2 years ago and thought what a bargain - Dual format recording and a good spec. However I have been let by the fact that mine only seems happy recording on DVD+, on the DVD- it loses the sound quality. Now, the biggest let down which many people don’t seem to have picked up on is that this machine only records on a format specific to this brand, as recorded discs are not playable on other machines - not helpful if you have recorded that special wedding footage onto disc to then pass round to the family! Also when completing more than 2hr recordings the final copy ends up freezing or loses the sound. If you’re thinking of buying this machine please think carefully, especially if your going to copy home video’s etc onto disc hoping to watch them in the future but cannot due to the odd software this machine incorporates?

Customer Review: very very NOISY
This is only an average product. I previously owned the Panasonic DMR E-55 model which was RAM and -R compatible only so i was expecting this to be a big improvement. It isn’t. It’s biggest drawback is the amount of noise it makes while playin discs. I thought it was a fault and sent it back and amazon very quickly sent another but it was the same so i presume it’s just the way this model works. Even when you press stop it continues to whirr for about 5 mins. Also when you put in a -RW dvd you must finalise it before it will play on another dvd player which really makes the function useless. I intended to record programs on RW in one room while kids watched their dvds in sitting room, then watch what i had taped later on in the sitting room but it would cost me a dvd RW every time. Finally it sure is ugly.
Customer Review: Panasonic DVD RAM recorders recording.
To those who can’t record TV programmes whilst away on holiday, I wish you well. There is no reason why this cannot be achieved. Two ways. Way 1 1:Set up the Digi box either Sat or Freeview onto AV2 SCART on the recorder. 1.1:Set recorder to start and finish at times required and specify AV2 as program. 1.2:Set the programmes required on the favouites list on the digi box. 1.3.Set Timer. Note, you could even use Video Plus and check that the entry for program has used AV2. It usually does. Way 2. Set up digi box as way 1. With SAT (including FreeSat), set up programmes required in the favourites list (make sure they won’t clash through setting program links). Set the recorder to External link via remote or on the front panel depending on model of recorder. The signal used by SKY+ sent by the programme distributer will start the recorder and switch it off into standby. Note that if you use the programme menu on a sat box whilst the recording is happening, the recorder will loose the continiuity signel and stop recording. The first way is the best but be sure to synchronise the favourites list and the recording times. Then turn your telly off at the mains and go on holiday.

I can not believe I have to write about the same problem as the previous reviewer. After 364 days of service the machine refuses to recognise any DVD inserted. Has Panasonic built in a time-up device? So, nice machine but not built to last. Copy onto DVD immediately or get extended warranty.

This is a brilliant piece of design, with a generally good user interface and almost all the features one could ask for. The FreeView tuner is sensitive, and the hard-disk editing features are close to what a MiniDisc user would expect (only the ability to join programmes is missing). However, after 48 weeks, mine stopped being able to handle any DVD, even pre-recorded ones. Whatever I put in gives the message “Disc cannot be read - please check disc”. I reported it to Panasonic Customer Services a few days ago, and am currently awaiting a response. So I have a hard disk nearly full of brilliant recordings, but cannot archive them to DVD. My advice is to archive as you go, rather than trying to accumulate like material to go on to the discs.

Customer Review: Good Value
It has it’s niggles but for the price represents great value. Yes response to the remote is sometimes slow or non-existent; though this seems to be because the box is busy doing its thing rather than the remote not working. The editing feature could be improved, the preview window is small and you have to start from the beginning of the title you are editing everytime you make a change but to be honest at x32 ffwd it doesn’t take too long to get through it. I can see it being a pain if you want to make lots of edits but for something like removing commercials every 15-20 mins it’s bearable. It doesn’t do HD or upscaling, VideoPlus or have a Freeview tuner but none of these are issues for me, I don’t need them, I have Sky+ and won’t be going HD for a while yet. On the plus side is does have two RGB scarts, a feature lacking in many budget recorders. Video quality is very good, even long play was surprisingly good. There might be more negatives than pluses here but don’t forget that price and that the negatives are not that bad unless you are easily annoyed, wanting a HD player or intending to use the internal tuner.

I programed the multi-region code provided by other users on this site(many thanks for sharing this with all of us)I did what you said and I am now watching a dvd from america(region 1)titled “Lady sings the blues”featuring Diana Ross. At this price you cannot afford to let this slip by..full marks for a great dvd recorder and so easy to set up(you will not need to get the grandchildren to set it up for you). BJB.
