Ellion DVR-960E 250GB HDD DVD Recorder with HDMI output & USB input

Ellion DVR-960E 250GB HDD DVD Recorder with HDMI output & USB input
Customer Review: Not Good
Got through two of these machines before deciding to spend my money on something more reliable.

The first machine gave constant interference problems on my TV. I got horizontal lines moving down the screen and no amount of scart lead swapping or changing made any difference. Amazon very good in dealing with a replacement.

The replacement was obviously correctly working re the above problem - good picture quality and all functions seemed OK but as mentioned by someone else, the utterly flimsy DVD drawer cover was broken on arrival! No way to fix as the hinge was made of puny plastic and clearly a very weak point. Although not affecting the operation of the machine once a disk was loaded, it got in the way when trying to open or close the drawer. Sent it back for a refund - again, excellent service from Amazon. Ellion could learn something there!

In my experience, not recommended - you get what you paid for. Ellion are unkown for a reason.

Customer Review: You get what you pay for
I have been struggling with this machine for four months, and it has finally (thankfully?) given up the ghost so I’m returning it. Overall, the unit seems cheaply put together both in terms of hardware and OS design. It seems to have a good spec and price, but I can’t express how over-complicated and awkward it is to use - I’ll mention a few points here as an indication:

- Regular crashes when using certain key presses, requiring hard-reset. Grrr.

- Remote control. The reciever does not have a very wide reception cone, so if you’re not sat right in front of the unit you find yourself waving the remote around in the air. Also, you have to press each button for a time before it activates. This is very annoying and slows down the operation.

- Menu system very slow to respond and not intuitive. for example, the system does not slip easily in to TV record mode, you have to go through another option first. Some other players are much more straightforward.

- Recorded programs are shown in ascending date order, so if you have a few on there you have to painfully navigate down the list or re-sort it to see your latest recordings. frustrating.

- PDC record option is shown but does not work

- I keep having to reset the input port. In my case, that’s the rear SCART, which is the last on the list so another slow & painful journey through all the options to reach it.

- It’s messes up the aspect ratio switching on my TV - I keep having to play around with the settings, for example to get 4:3 to watch older programs on Sky, as it no longer automatically switches with the ellion unit connected in-line.

In fairness, there are a few saving graces as follows:

- Loads of storage!

- The unit is fairly quiet in operation

- The front USB socket is great for watching vids or listening to music from your key-drive

- The recorder is not too deep and fits nicely in my AV unit.

Overall, the I would say that machine is powerful but gives the impression of having been rushed to release, not quite having been finished or fully tested by a human interface designer. Later models may be better.

Hope this is useful,

Jas

Customer Review: Goodmans GDVD300R DRDR
Down to silly money in Comet now (?29.99) because they only have an analogue tuner and, for them, they’re now disposing of them as ‘end or range’ - but still great value for money.
Customer Review: worst buy ever!
Don’t buy this dvd recorder! the tuner is awful, it has trouble reading and formatting discs, it skips a lot while recording, the picture flickers in recordings and the remote is next to useless. There are far better recorders out there around the same price now, so there’s no excuse for buying this pile of junk!

Customer Review: Short review on the Panasonic DMREX77
Spent a month researching the Internet looking for a DVD burner that would connect to my SKY+ box for archiving purposes. I had a budget of ?250 and was worried by some of the reviews on DVD burners that promised a lot of flexibility and compatibility but did not deliver. I decided on this burner because; 1. The price. 2. That it can play & record on a wide range of DVD’s. 3. Has a good size hard drive to store/edit. 4. Has Freeview (giving me another source of recording apart from the 2 SKY+). PROS: The box arrived promptly and securely packaged. The burner connected to my existing hardware quickly. The menu system is straightforward. The disk space is 160Gigs. One can setup the burner to wait for a signal from the SKY+ box stating that it’s about to start copying i.e. setup all the programs you want to copy over and do this over night. I thought the editing process straightforward. CONS: After 8 hours of copying the burner starts a new file on the disk drive, so you don’t loose anything but this could result in a selection of titles one wants to keep together being split. The remote has lots of buttons. SUMMARY: Smart sturdy box ideal for archiving SKY+.
