Customer Review: A good DVD recorder and SACD player too
I bought this machine back in September 2005. It is still working fine and, to be honest, it has been a more reliable one than my original Philips (purchased a couple of years before that date and at a time when DVD recorders were selling for upwards of ?600). The old Philips constantly skipped and stuck on pre-recorded DVDs. The LiteOn has not done any of these things. Maybe I was just lucky with the individual model? True it doesn’t have any of the subtle editing capabilities of the Philips, such as chapter mark edits. However, aside from all the many a/v visual formats it plays, the LiteOn is also a very good SACD player. I have mine rigged up to play back through my hi-fi system whenever I feel the need. The SACD gives a terrific audio playback: certainly comparable with HDCD. I’m purchasing another one while they are still available: I can always use it in my office for SACD playback and keep as a spare machine should the original purchase finally breakdown.
Customer Review: Avoid like the plague!
I bought this DVD recorder just over a year ago and it has been nothing but trouble: 1. It rejects the majority of recordable discs, including those recommended on the website (which, curiously, has recently been inaccessible). I’ve wasted countless recordable discs trying to get this thing to work - the normal routine is that I insert a blank disc, it makes a repeated whining noise for about 10 minutes, then it displays the message ‘Fail’. Occasionally, it does accept a disc, but we’re talking about 1 in every 6 on average. 2. It’s slow to respond even on the odd occasion it does accept a disc. 3. It’s noisy. 4. Installing the firmware has made no difference. The old adage that ‘you get what you pay for’ is certainly true with this machine. It’s poorly built and hopelessly unreliable. But it does display the word ‘hello’ when you turn it on.
