Customer Review: Decidedly average for Sony
Although this unit has a fair few good features it falls down on some really basic areas. Firstly, the start-up and shutdown times are very long. Start-up taking approx 5-10 secs and shutdown taking a full 30 secs. The EPG is frequently wrong and doesn’t always record the programmes scheduled. It has been suggested that this is simply due to poor reception but it didn’t occur on my freeview box (also a Sony) so I don’t see why it should be happening with this. It also doesn’t play .wma files which is a bit of an irritation. Barring those flaws (which are very frustrating) the unit operates well although with hindsight I think I’d have opted for a similarly specified Panasonic.
Customer Review: Stylish but dissapointing
Having received my Sony HXD870 I was shocked to find that some of the digital channels (particularly BBC ones)did not operate properly (pixalating and freezing being the norm) Check your signal reception you might say, but my signal is good and my other digital boxes work fine. Having done more research (which I clearly should have done before purchase!) it appears I am not alone with this problem (check the internet) I am also disturbed to read that the EPG timer does also not work properly (it does not record progs as it should some people claim). This is a shame because otherwise the product is very stylish and has some easy to use amazing features.

Customer Review: Common fault of switching its self off
Have had exactly same experience as others, had machine for 5 months now turns its self on and off every few seconds. 2 friends bought same machine and had same problem. Contact Sony 08705 111999 and they will give you name of nearest Sony repair firm, who will repair if within 12 month warranty. Hope this helps, frankly dissappointed that this recognised common fault does not mean an automatic replacement from manufacturers.
Customer Review: O.K. if you have never used a Humax
Potentially excellent combination of upscaling dvd player, dvd writer and freeview HDD recorder to go with my new sony LCD but I could not stand the crude way the EPG expects you to set up recordings. On my 3 year old HUMAX I set up 95% of recordings by searching for program name. To my surprise you cannot do this on the Sony - you have to laboriously go though the epg manually to find the programs. On further research (See the excellent comparison data on www.pvrjunction.co.uk) it seems that only Humax, Daewoo, and Topfield/TAPS allow searching by text. I also found the interface generally slow, and the fan noisier than I found acceptable. Had to go back!
