Customer Review: A Great All-Rounder
I bought this T.V. because of the high ratings it received from a certain consumer electronics mag. The 5/5 rating for Picture this particular television received was what I was looking for in a HD Ready T.V, seeing as this is the main advantage this new generation has over their tube predecessors. Yes, I have found the picture quality largely excellent: some flicker does occur when watching films, but I’m relieved to hear from a previous reviewer that this can be solved. As you would expect, sharpness is dramatically improved when playing video HD video games (this T.V. optimises to 720p), and the Game Mode smoothes out flicker and regulates contrast issues in games very well. The sound quality has received a lot of stick from customers on other website, which I think is harsh: true, it is not as wide as the Dolby sound on my older Toshiba tube set, but the different sound presets (Movie, Speech, etc.) generally rectify this issue. Connectivity is superb, with a USB (non hub) port, card readers, an S-Video side input to complement the side AV, twin HDMI, Component Video (which you’ll need for XBOX 360 input), and two SCARTS (one RGB enabled). The unit is extremely light, meaning it can easily sit on a chest of drawers, thanks to the stylish supplied stand. On the downside, the remote control is a little unresponsive, but after having this T.V. for a few weeks, that is just about the only irritation I can find with it. Definitely recommended.
Customer Review: Superb…once you manage to fix the flicker issue
Like a previous reviewer here, I too noticed a brief flicker, particularly when the scene changes from a bright scene to a dark scene. This can be fixed, but in theory you need to get Samsung to send one of their agent engineers out - the guy had to wring HQ - but to save time tell them they need to switch off the Dynamic Dimming. This is done by accessing the service menu, switching Debug Mode to On, and switching Dynamic Dimming to Off. They won’t tell you how to access the service menu yourself - its done by 4 key presses…you may be able to find out via a forum… Alternatively, switching the mode to Movie setting is a work-around, but depends if you’re happy watching everything on a very dark setting. Aside from that, its a very good unit. I much prefer the flat-bottom design compared to the R72/R74 model. And amazon delivered bang on time as usual, so full marks to them…!
