Customer Review: Another let down customer
Like one of the other reviewers I saw on Dec 19th that this was in stock and available for next day delivery. I placed the order literally within seconds. Needless to say I now know the item was not really in stock - I got emails telling me it would be delivered before Dec 24th and then just before Xmas a message saying the supplier had let Amazon down and it would be arriving sometime in February. Lesson learnt Amazon - with no route to complain about an order placed when there was stock (I checked after placing the order and it was still showing as available) customers are forced to leave product feedback. I will continue to use Amazon for non-essential purchases. I trusted them to deliver and stopped my DS search believing I had bought an “in stock” item. Big mistake - made all the more annoying by Amazon’s refusal to accept messages FROM customers - it only sends them out or lets you read FAQs.
Customer Review: BEWARE NINTENDO DS USERS!
You cannot fault the Nintendo DS for its design and gaming experience, except for one flaw. It’s durability. I have had my Nintendo DS Lite for just over 12 months and hardly used it in that time, except to train my brain with Dr Kawashima. However, I am disappointed and annoyed that a crack has appeared in the hinge and a green dot on the touch screen, which is noticeable and distracting when playing games with dark images. It is literally just out of warranty and I will have to pay around half the price of a new DS to repair it. Ironically, the DS has not been man-handled but stored carefully in a carry case out of harm’s way. So as a word of caution, keep your proof of purchase so you can claim under the 12 month warranty should you need to. Otherwise, happy gaming!

MP3!: I Didn’t Know You Could Do That…. (I Didn’t Know You Could Do That)
Napster’s in the news, that’s for sure, which means more people than ever are listening to music encoded in the Motion Picture Experts Group 3 (MPEG-3, or MP3) standard. MP3! I Didn’t Know You Could Do That… exists for the purpose of explaining what MP3 music is, why it’s superior to older music formats in many ways, and how you can listen to and record it. Readers get the goods on finding, downloading, recording, sharing, and modifying MP3 files–in short, how to participate in the MP3 community. It’s both an instruction manual and a toolkit, as its companion CD-ROM includes Winamp, Sonique, MusicMatch JukeBox, and a selection of public-domain MP3 files.

The book gets a bit tedious at times, particularly when it “explains” how to do things on Web sites that are both pretty intuitive to begin with and adequately documented online. The authors otherwise do a good job, though, in pointing out software whose existence might not be apparent to an MP3 newcomer, and in illuminating the process of recording MP3 files onto CD-ROM disks in CD-DA format for use in a standard CD player. Their coverage also excels when it comes to Napster, as they include mentions of Macster (for Mac OS) and Gnapster (for the Gnome environment under Linux), as well as the popular Windows edition of the MP3-exchange tool. –David Wall, Aazon.com

Topics covered: MP3 audio files, along with the tools and communities that have sprung into existence around them. Documentation of popular MP3 software, like Winamp and Napster, is a big part of this book, and a guide to MP3 download sites makes up much of the rest. There’s coverage of recording MP3 files onto standard audio disks, too.

Customer Review: Can’t go wrong with this
I bought this for a friend who wanted to get a good knowledge of the internet and I saw him about a week later churning out CDs with his own variations or the originals of songs. I seriously reccomend this book if you are new to the idea of MP3s (You don’t want a ?200 little shiny box sitting by your computer gathering dust) you want to get this book if you like music I must admit it doesn’t give all the things a pro knows but who cares it gives all the info you would need and then with your expanded knowledge you would find out about it anyway. I have no reccomendations as high as this to any other book to do with MP3s.

MP3!: I Didn’t Know You Could Do That…. (I Didn’t Know You Could Do That)
MP3 is hotter than sex, at least when it comes to Internet searches. The new music format has swept across the Net, delighting music fans, empowering artists, horrifying record companies and baffling those who’ve come late to the party. If you’re looking for the MP3 equivalent of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid to Ask, MP3! I Didn’t Know You Could Do That… might fit the bill.

This book covers all aspects of MP3, starting with the reasons why it’s such a big deal and the hardware required. In-depth reviews of the top MP3 Web sites lead you into main act: six chapters explaining how to use the players, rippers (programs for producing MP3 files from audio CDs) and broadcasting software on the accompanying CD. There’s also a chapter on portable MP3 players.

The authors adopt a streetwise tone and downplay the technical aspects. Although this makes the book approachable, the smart asides sometimes take over. For example, when introducing the Virtuosa Gold interface, they say:

Virtuosa Gold was apparently designed to present a drag-and-drool interface–which it does, but sophisticated users (yes, that’s you when you’ve doffed your bathrobe and put on your 501s) find it clunky. If Fisher-Price designed a ripper-jukebox, it might look something like this.

Huh? Complete beginners would be better off with a book that gets to the point more quickly. Though it doesn’t offer any earth-shattering tips and tricks, MP3! I Didn’t Know You Could Do That… is a decent crash course in MP3. –Mary Lojkine
