Customer Review: Good GPS system but read the small print
I just bought the TomTom Navigator 6 complete with bluetooth GPS and complete Western Europe Maps on SD card. The GPS works fine and it was great having everything on an SD card instead of having to copy from a CD-ROM. The software and bluetooth perform better than the wired TomTom GPS and Navigator 3/5 versions that I had previously used. My one complaint is that I am restricted to using the GPS on just one PDA, not that I had thought this might be a problem when I bought it. Now my XDA Exec has developed a fault and it is just one month outside of the warranty period. This means I will need to buy a new PDA and new GPS, as TomTom will not allow me to install the system on a different machine. I don’t expect this will cause many people a problem but do be aware of this restriction if you feel you may need to change your PDA as I am about to. So far I have had a week’s use from the TomTom Navigator 6 before my XDA Exec failed - at ?166 that is an expensive week’s GPS use.

TomTom RDS/TMC Reciever for Go 510, 710 and 910 models RDS/TMC RECEIVER F/ TT 710/910 IN
Customer Review: Newly bought aerial picks up signal well.
This aerial is actually compatible with the Tom Tom Go (v3), the non-XL version. This is currently not mentioned anywhere on the TomTom website, although customer services say the website will be updated to reflect this.

I have the aerial mounted vertically and it quickly picks up signal at my home and work, both in London. I have yet to try it on a journey.

It quickly picks up around 40-100 different traffic issues, all in the South-East (presumably because I’m using it in London). Although I’ve yet to verify it, it seems to underestimate the delay due to each issue, e.g. it regularly says a traffic delay will take “1 minute” although e.g. AA roadwatch reports 20 minutes delay.

Unfortunately you don’t get much control over the routing algorithm - you can either avoid all traffic, however long that takes, or stick to the fastest route. You can’t tell it (for example) that you quite dislike traffic, but not to choose a different route if it adds more than 20 minutes to your total journey. Like most of the TomTom software, it seems to be optimized for easy use at the expense of detailed control.

One other general complaint about the TomTom algorithms is they don’t take time-of-day into account (this with software v7.1). They say south London to Banbury, through the centre of London, takes 1 minute 39, regardless of whether I ask at 1am or 7am. At 7am, it would be much higher. The algorithm should really consider time of day and realise that urban roads are slower at these times.

Customer Review: TomTOm RDS/TMC Receiver
DON’T BOTHER!!!!!!

This is the most useless thing I have ever used. I can only say thank god i did’nt pay good money for it as it came with my Go510.
I drive 30000 miles a year and have had it for nearly a year and its only ever tuned in twice and thats to Classic FM! Not exactly the first choice for traffic info!
I’ve spent more time in traffic holdups than ever and now rely on radio reports which use RDS to interupt what i’m listening to, to give me traffic info from local radio stations. Far more helpful.

TomTom GO 910 Music Bundle With Worlwide Mapping
Used Price: ?249.99
Customer Review: Excellent piece of kit
I must admit to being a little aprehensive when buying the Tom Tom Go 910 due to some of the negative comments. Once it arrived however I found it to be outstanding. The full post code search makes finding locations very straightforward and points of interest have included most of what I have been loking for. Bluetooth hands-free has worked well, on the Tom Tom site it suggested that my phone (sony 990i) would work partially, i.e. not downloading the address list, but in practice it worked perfectly. A brilliant extra is the MP3 player which works with a 20gb memory and plays through a FM transmitter to the car stereo. This worked perfectly in a number of cars - kept the kids quiet (apart from singing) on a holiday through wales One complaint about which much made is the car mount - with some saying it does not work - all I can say is if you follow the instructions no problems whatsoever Overall highly recommended - but one sorry postscript, some herbert stole the GPS out of the car and Amazon no longer have it in stock so it is back to the A_Z for a few weeks
Customer Review: Me too!
Just like the other reviewers, my product code does not work, and guidance is pretty poor. Not too impressed with its navigating ability either. I have only used it once, from Shropshire to Pembrokeshire, and trying to use the route I rate as best was not possible. Apparerntly there are no routes passing through Ludlow, Leominster and/or Brecon. Not only that, but in Fishguard, trying to find a postcode, we were taken out of town, around the by-pass, then back in to the same roundabout we had already passed through. At two junctions, the nice lady inside directed us the opposite way to the mapped direction. Perhaps I should have used the man! The FM transmitter works fine in my car, but the music player is a not very sophisticated. All in all, not very impressed with a so called top of the range package.
