Samsung - VP-DC563 - Mini DVD Camcorder

Samsung - VP-DC563 - Mini DVD Camcorder
Customer Review: Jury’s Out
My experience with this product has not been great.

I bought at the ?200 price, I was initially very disappointed with the battery charge, when recording in normal mode, I got nothing like the time specifified in the manual for a full charge.

Then, on my 3rd recording, the camcorder developed a fault, with the DVD-RW going round continually when you power on, and there was NOTHINGA i could do to stop it, remove the disk etc, tried everything, including removing batteries.

So I had to send it back. I hope I have not been silly, in asking for a new camcorder rather than a refund, but hope springs eternal.

By the way, my disappointment is with Samsung - amazon were outstanding, not only the good price which everyone notes here, but this is the first return I have made in c 7 years of custom, and I was super-impressed with how easy it is to make a return. First class service

Customer Review: Great functions let down by poor image quality.
Firsly i bought this camcorder due to the other three reviews hoping that i had made the right choice. Unfortunately i got a camcorder that was defective when recording to dvd. There was a 1mm distorted line at the bottom of the recording. no such line when recording to the memory card, weird. i also found that the picture quality was not up to scratch. maybe i have been spoilt by using a panasonic mini DV prior to buying this but the image was just grainy. like i said maybe i just had a defective unit but thought i would share my views. have returned the unit to amazon for a full refund and have started my hunt again for a good quality camcorder.

Customer Review: Very good for a budget camera/camcorder bag.
For the money this is a very good camera/camcorder bag. It’s constructed from a heavy duty hard-wearing nylon outer and has more than enough space and pockets for a typical camera setup and accessories. Obviously if you have an SLR camera or similar with many large lenses then you’ll need a much bigger bag/case but my Canon MVX460 camcorder fits perfectly (similar to the illustration) at one end with loads of room to spare. I would have liked to have seen a fuzzy lining with at least one Velcro divider to keep the main camera body tightly held in place but I guess you have to go upwards of around ?50 or so for those kind of features. Stuffing a lint-free duster/cloth between the camera and the stitched-in double-pocketed divider will work just as well. I don’t know if it’s the same with all of them or whether it’s just a short-term special but mine came with a quite large seperate velcro-fastening memory-card wallet which sits in its own dedicated internal pocket. Overall I’m very pleased with it :)

Sony ACC-DVDP DVD Camcorder Starter Kit (Compact Case, Spare Battery, DVD+RW Disc)

Sony ACC-DVDP DVD Camcorder Starter Kit (Compact Case, Spare Battery, DVD+RW Disc)
Customer Review: Can be bought much cheaper now.
I know it`s almost a year since the last review but there are lots of these kits still around at a very good price. I`ve just bought one brand new on Ebay for ?5.50. A fantastic bargain. The case is good quality and as it includes the spare battery plus a +RW Disc then there`s no reason not to buy one now. I`m almost tempted to get another one just for the battery and Disc.

Customer Review: Extremely over priced - so make sure you buy it here
This is extremely over priced for what you get. Having said that though here is where you should buy it if you want it; it is 79.99 in Argos and shopping around i’ve seen it priced higher.

For the first 2-3 weeks the little DVD case is ok. After that it doesn’t last that long as you’ll have to buy a new one because it only holds 4 DVDs.

Overall, this will be good for your handycam especially the new spare battery you’ll get with it.

I’ve bought a bigger camcorder bag and DVD case now, though.

So to round up, this is a great kit to buy to start you off but you’ll probably end up buying replacements for your camcorder.

My advice is to buy it even though its really over-priced.

Getting Your Photos Ready for Sharing

Getting Your Photos Ready for Sharing

One of the main reasons people buy digital cameras is so they can share their photos with others. Even if you are just going to print your photos for yourself, you will want them to look their best. Here are some tips on getting your images ready for sharing or printing.

1. ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS

Delete the ones you don’t like or those that are near duplicates of others. No sense in clogging up your hard drive or CDs with junk. Use a good photo management software program like ACDSEE 7, Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 5 to view, organize and name your images. These programs also let you batch rename so you can give more descriptive file names to a group of photos at the same time. You can add key words and tags to make finding your photos easier. Be detailed in your photo descriptions, not just “John and Laurie.” You’ll probably have hundreds of photos of your kids and it will be harder to find the one you’re looking for. Better to say “John and Laurie waterskiing on Lake Powell, May 2004.”

2. BACK UP YOUR ORIGINALS

Mistakes can happen. It is a good idea to back up all your images to a CD before you start editing or changing them. That way you always have the original to go back to if you accidentally save over an image or made changes to a photo that you later decide you don’t like. CDs hold lots of photos, making it cheap insurance.

3. ROTATE IMAGES

Trying to look at a sideways photo is annoying. Use your photo management or editing software to rotate photos as needed. And if you have any images that are a little crooked, you can fix that using your editing software. Most photo editors have an automatic “straighten” function, or you can manually rotate the image a few degrees to straighten the horizon line.

4. REMOVE RED-EYE

Even with your digital camera’s auto red-eye reduction function, your subject’s eyes may still have red-eye. Use your photo editing software to remove it. Zoom in on the eyes and it will be easier for you to correct the red-eye. I’ve tried a number of red-eye correction tools and find that the one that comes with ACDSEE 7’s photo editor is among the best. It zeros in just on the red eye and doesn’t darken the surrounding eye area like some other software does.

5. CROP YOUR PHOTOS

Crop out unnecessary or distracting backgrounds and focus in on your subject. Most photo editing programs will keep the aspect ratio, so when you draw a box around the area you want to focus on it will crop it as 4×6 or whatever you have specified. That way you won’t end up with an odd size photo. Kodak EasyShare Gallery also has a very good cropping tool for maintaining the proper print size. It comes with its free photo editor.

6. ADJUST LIGHTING AND CONTRAST

Some of your photos may have come out washed out or too dark. You can automatically adjust the color, brightness and contrast of your photos. The better programs like Photoshop Album 2.0, Jasc and ACDSEE also have tools for making manual adjustments for fine-tuning. Be careful not to overdo it, though, or your picture could come out grainy.

7. PREPARE TO SHARE

There are a number of ways to share your images. Several programs, like Roxio Photo Suite 7, ACDSEE7, Photoshop Album and Paint Shop Photo Album allow you to create digital photo albums or slide shows, complete with music, transitions and captions. You can burn them to CD or resize and optimize for emailing directly from the program.

Online photo services such as PhotoWorks, Shutterfly, Snapfish and Kodak EasyShare Gallery also let you share your photos on line, for free. You simply upload your images to their server into your own photo albums and add captions if you wish. Then email your friends with a link to your albums. With most of the online services your photos stay on their servers as long as you have an account with them, for free. Signing up for an account is free, you only pay for photos you choose to purchase.

For hardcore photo sharers, there are also dedicated photo sharing applications such as PiXPO v1.5.0, which lets you share photos right off your hard drive. This is a peer to peer software application that allows you to connect directly with your friends and family to share and view pictures online with no uploads. Unlike traditional photo sharing services, you have unlimited storage and you don’t have to upload your photos to a distant server or wait for friends to log onto some photo sharing site. The application is easy to install and use and it’s inexpensive, around $30. PC Magazine rated it an Editor’s Choice in their January 3, 2005 issue.

Kodak Easyshare Z712 Digital Camera - (7.1MP, 12x Optical zoom, Opitical IS)
Amazon Price: ?172.47
Customer Review: Don’t bother with the bag
I’ve used a kodak digital for some time now but this one is a step up in features. So far so good. Good value and reasonably simple to use. However, don’t buy the lowpro bag that apparently people buy with this camera because it is way too small for the camera to go in.. even my old one barely fits! I suppose I could keep my phone in it.
Customer Review: Kodak z712 IS
It arrived in time for my holiday. It was very easy to start snapping photos in 10 minutes. I really like the lens quality and the zoom capability. Watch out when you get into the digital zoom as you will need a tripod or a steady car. I learned almost all of the more advanced features by reading the PDF file online at Kodak’s web site. Very easy to use, great pictures, what more do you want? Image stabilzation? It has that as well. Great non=professional camera. If you need more then spend aa ton more but this little gem has what I need for everyday use and if it gets swipped I’m not out that ton of money.

Customer Review: Excellent little camera
I thought I’d write a review to help anyone who may be thinking about buying this camera. I own the gold version of the casio z1050. It’s smaller than I anticipated (a good thing!) which means it can fit into little handbags/pockets etc easily. Although it’s not the smallest casio on the market (ie the casio s770) it is still very small and can fit into the average person’s palm quite easily and is not very thick. The camera screen is also massive and dominates the back of the camera. I’m very happy with my choice as I was stuck between the casio s770 and this one (I don’t think I would of liked one any smaller because it would just be a bit too flimsy). The picture quality is excellent and clear. I’m not the most technical person and found the camera easy to operate. Great slideshow options, and over 30 best shot modes that are useful. My only downside is that the battery has to be removed to be charged, which may mean that you lose any settings you have made (but I’m not entirely sure because I haven’t had to recharge yet!). The battery has lasted ages so far (I’ve been using it every day for a week and it has not gone down at all - still full). There are lots of other features that I won’t bore you with! If you want to know more just ask! I’ve never given a review before so it might not be very useful. I’m just an average photo taker and no professional! I just wanted to give a review because I’m happy not many people have reviwed it!
Customer Review: Casio EX-Z1050BK - Bought from Currys Online
Bought this camera about a week ago, and so far very pleased with the results. Nice bright screen, easy to use controls and the menu buttons/icons on the RH side of the view-finder as you take photos are very useful. Dosen’t seems to be a way to manually adjust the shutters speed etc, is all managed by Casio’s Best-Shot software, which is acessible via a single button. Unfortunately video is limited to 10mins, but hopefully this will be removed via a firmware update from Casio like the ex-z850. Usually 10 mins is more than enough thought. Camera comes with a separate battery charger, not a docking station, which is useful in some respects, (i.e. you can charge one battery whilst using the camera with another battery), however if you remove the battery from the camera to charge it, it forgets the time/date, (but not your preferences/selected sounds etc?), which you consequently have to set each time the battery is removed. The best shot settings do seem to give good results, although you can’t help wondering if manual ‘tweaking’ of the shutter speed, ISO etc could possibly give better results. There is a manual WB setting, (adjusts contrast, exposure etc), which can be good in low light. One feature that the EX-Z850 had was a AF assist light which doubled as a ‘movie light’ as in many mobile phones to allow videos to be taken in the dark. A small difference, (the LED is now orange and cannot be used as a ‘movie light’), but may be of concern to some. Self-timer function has a multiple setting, chose from 2 or 10 second delay for the first picture, and then take 2 more consecutive pictures with about 2 second intervals. ie, if someone blinks or falls over you can choose the best of the three, which I think is a really good idea. Feels very well made and has a nice metal case, (although in my opinion it would look better in a brushed aluminium finish…). SD HC support also means you can use 4GB memory cards (8GB are avaliable but apparently the camera is only compatible with upto 4GB - which I have ordered but have yet to test performance…) Would recommend to anyone who’s looking to get a digi cam for around ?150, or even ?250. It’s not an SLR, but its very very good.

Travel and Scenic Photography

Travel and Scenic Photography 101

When you’re driving through the mountains somewhere, and you notice a car parked half off the road and some guy leaning to the left to avoid a branch with his Rebel 2000 camera in the act of focusing, you’ve met me. I do this because, to me, a trip isn’t fulfilling unless I’ve preserved that beauty for posterity. I’d like to share some of the techniques that make scenic photography such a wonderful artform - simple, yet elegant.

First off, equipment. As much as the cheapo disposable camera beckons, get real. These cameras have fisheye lenses which I call “spam” lenses. They cram everything in, with equal blurriness and boringness. Good photos are sharp, unless you use blur for artistic effect. Sharp comes from an adjustable lens. It can be a fixed lens or a zoom, but it must focus specially for each picture. Fixed lenses are limiting for scenic pictures, where to frame the shot you may need to move long distances. Imagine using a fixed lens on the Washington Monument, when you’re half a block away! Zooms get my vote, even though they often don’t have as wide an aperture, which limits their capabilities in low light situations.

Practically speaking, an SLR is the absolute best. They are lightweight, and can be used with top quality lenses. Film SLRs tend to be less expensive, but have the limitations of film, meaning you have to get it developed and so forth. Digital SLRs are VERY expensive, so for the budget conscious either go with a film SLR or a high quality basic digital camera. With digital, resolution is also a critical factor, so look at the specs before you buy.

OK, we’ve got the camera, emotions are running high, and that’s great, but not too great! Sometimes I find a spot that is so wonderful, I start shooting like a madman, only to be disappointed by the pictures. What happened? Emotions. When you experience a place, there are sounds, aromas and breezes as well as the visuals of the spot. Needless to say, you can’t photograph all of these elements, only the visual. When overwhelmed by the spectacle of a scenic hotspot, we are often overwhelmed by all of these elements.

So what to do? Look through your camera. The viewfinder does not lie (usually). Try to see what you are looking at as the finished picture. Most people perfunctorily take pictures, hoping that somehow the shot will come out great. If you wonder how the pictures came out when you are on the way to the drug store to get them, you’re doing something wrong. At the moment you click the pic, you should know exactly what you will get. (Of course with digital, that’s not a trick!).

Now, I was a tad dishonest in saying that you can’t capture all of the elements of a scene. You can hint at them. For starters, motion. Yes, even in a still picture, there is motion. Something happened before, during and after your picture. In a mountain vista scene, you may find something that hints at motion, whether it be a branch of a tree that has been swaying in the breeze, or a river flowing through the valley below. These add a sense of motion.

Then there’s the “rule of thirds.” When you place the main object of the picture smack-dab in the middle, it is static and boring. Place it one third of the way from either side, and you IMPLY motion. Put the horizon in a landscape photo a third of the way up or down, not across the middle.

Remember, when a person looks at a picture, their eyes move. You want to frame your photo to help that movement. If you can find some lines in the scene, such as a skyline, cloud formation, path through the forest, etcetera, use it interestingly, and with the rule of thirds to draw your viewer’s eyes into the picture.

Avoid “summit syndrome.” You get to the top of Mount Washington and shoot the majestic vista. Great. The pictures come out … boring! How? No PERSPECTIVE. Big vistas will be flat unless you have an object in the foreground, such as a rock or a tree, to give them perspective. Then the eye really grasps how big this scene is. People enjoying the view is a real winner, because the viewer may identify with their emotions, giving the image real impact.

Cheese! Yes, you do have to take the family photos. It’s obligatory. But when you do, make sure that they show the LOCATION of the photo. Otherwise, you might as well do it on your driveway. Frame the scene in context, with landmarks as part of the picture. Find a way to tell as story in the picture, such as little Sara climbing up the rocks by the waterfall.

Finally, any element in the picture that hints at more senses than just the visual will make it remarkable. Actor headshots for example, tell a story about the subject. You can almost hear them saying their next lines. If you photograph a garden, the viewer may experience the aroma of the flowers. A tourist street with an accordion player on the corner may have your amazed friends whistling “Dixie.”

In summation, picture taking on travel is recording the experience in a satisfying way. Use motion, perspective, sensory, storytelling and so forth, to bring your photos to life. Oh, and needless to say, make your job easy and go to great places! See you at the overlook!

Tony Hawk’s Helmet Cam
List Price: ?109.99
Amazon Price: ?80.48
Customer Review: Brilliant Entry level Action camera
This is a fantastic unit that contaiins everything you need to make easy, fun movies of your action. Perfect for kids as it is so simple to use. You really do just press and go. The software is very user friendly too, and lots of cool clips of Tony Hawk in action. I bought one for my boyfriend for snowboarding and it has since been used BMXing and just as a webcam! The photography is not going to win any awards but it’s been fun to email friends footage of their snow mishaps!
Customer Review: Great Camera for the price
Ok so the picture you get isn’t going to be great but it’s as good as the video from a normal digital stills camera but not as good as a proper digital video camera. You can buy better cameras for ?hundreds but bearing in mind your strapping it to a helmet that your assuming your going to need (ie get bashed) do you want to risk loosing that expensive cam in an instant ? The camera is light and easy to use, its compact and well designed it takes 2 AAA batteries and an SD card, it also has a laser pointer to target what you are recording.

How to Photograph Absolutely Everything: Successful Pictures from Your Digital Camera
List Price: ?25.00
Amazon Price: ?15.00

Customer Review: OK for beginners.
This book is very well presented with a consistent easy to follow layout. This book really does cover almost every photographic subject you could wish to shoot. Some of the illustrations are amazing and has some nice compositional suggestions. On the downside, it has very little detail on the technicalities of shooting these subjects and for the enthusiast photographer, it will just state the obvious over and over again. Digital SLR users are probably better off with a DSLR specific book, as this book mostly demonstrates photographing with a compact camera and it’s various preset shooting modes (i.e Landscape mode). For someone new to the joys of creative photography this book is a perfect starting point. The enthusiast however may be better off looking elsewhere.
Customer Review: Very Usefull
This book is well composed and laidout with various sections on how to take that particular subject. It goes from explaining the basic on most new cameras and how to use them. It then moves on into how to take various photo’s in a wide diversaty of subjects and events. I would recommend this book to people who like photography and are just starting out like myself.
