JVC GR-DVX507 Mini-DV Digital Camcorder [DV-in/out]
Customer Review: Excellent!!
After looking at various models of DV camcorders I came accross this one by accident, I had played with a more expensive Panasonic model but it did not have DV in. The features this model has for the money is in my mind second to none, Stills camera, web-cam etc, etc. The only slight let down with it is the battery. The standard one only gives about 40 minutes of playtime, other then that it is excellent.

Panasonic - NV-GS60 - Mini DV Camcorder
Amazon Price: ?134.99
Customer Review: Panasonic NV-GS60EB Great budget camcorder
When buying this Camcorder I looked at the JVC GR-D728EK and the Sony DCR-HC27E. I discarded the JVC as it had very poor white balance, meaning the colures it produced were not faithful to the image being shot, the tape noise was picked up by the microphone in such a way that it was very distracting when watching the recorded video, and in-doors/low light the images lost their colure definition and became very grainy with the auto focus not working particularly effectively. When I handled the Sony and the Panasonic in store they both appeared NOT to suffer from the above foibles of the JVC. I purchased the Panasonic so I cannot comment further than on the Sony but can comment as follows on the Panasonic. The lens on the Panasonic is a 30 X Optical zoom (which is very good for camcorder standards) with an electronic image stabilising function which does contribute to reducing camera shake but will not, understandably, eradicate it. There is a however a fitting on the base of the camera to allow you to mount it on a tripod should you wish to. The main differentiator with the focal length on this camera in relation to the JVC & Sony above is that it has a very wide angle lens meaning that more will fit in to the shot, ideal for filming indoors where it may be hard to move far enough away from the subject matter to fit it all in or when filming scenery where you want to fit in a wider vista. In low light the images are still very good, the auto focus is still effective and the white balance is faithful. The camera comes equipped with a low light function (activated manually) to take filming down to 2 LUX (as much light generated by 2 candles at 1 meter) giving the ability to film in near darkness. Whilst there is a photo feature for taking stills, this simply records seven seconds of still footage on to the tape as opposed recording to a jpeg image on to a SD card, or such like, as would be done on a stills camera. The camera has a full auto setting and also manual over rides to cover focus, exposure compensation, and pre-programmed scene (sport, snow, beach, portrait etc), white balance, backlight compensation, plus others. I found the camera a little larger than the Sony & JVC (still very small), which for me made it more comfortable to handle, with not too many buttons and all in the right place. The Panasonic felt well made with a colour viewfinder (with dioptre) and a 2.5-inch LCD flip out screen (will swivel through 180 degrees for filming yourself etc) both are of perfectly good quality and deliver clear images. A sturdy/stubby joystick on the rear of the camera handles navigation for the menu & play functions. I actually found this very effective in use. You can out put the audiovisual signal by way of a DV Out (No In), Mini USB and composite jack plug (Video, Audio left & right) but there is no S-Video. There are also no DV or USB leads supplied with the camera only Jack Plug. There is also no editing software supplied for your PC. To see a thorough over view of the product you van down load the user manual from the Panasonic web site, www.panasonic.co.uk. I have thoroughly enjoyed using this camera. It has excellent image quality and low light handling for a budget camcorder. It starts up quickly and is simple to operate as well as reproducing images faithfully. For the money I would be happy to give this product 5 stars.
Customer Review: Panasonic NV-GS60EB
Excellent little camcorder. Picture quality is superb directly to the television via the AV cable, it is easy to use and is small and light. Great value for money. Just a shame it doesn’t come with any editing software or cable to connect to the computer.

Customer Review: Bad picture quality
Being a chap that trusts Sony products I was really looking forward to owning the DSC-T200 and assumed that Sony would have made a camera that produced fantastic photos as well as all the bells and whistles. Boy was I wrong! This is a great camera, apart from the fact that the picture quality is totally rubbish. My previous camera was a DSC-P200 (7.2MP) and this utterly trounces the T200 on picture quality. Sony have clearly upped the megapixels but thrown away all that extra data by compressing the image to two thirds the size of the images produced by the P200, what a waste! This produces dull, noisy images with a lot of compression artifacts to try and remove some of the noise. The manager in the Sony Center Croydon quite belligerently commented that in order to get the smile detection, touchscreen etc Sony has compromised on picture quality. Totally unacceptable! Don’t by this if you value your photos.
Customer Review: Great Camera
Received this camera yesterday. What little time I have had to use it I can honestly say it’s great. Previous camera a sony DSC-P200 that was 7MP and took great shots, and sad to see it go, but going to a good home. Only changed camera to upgade after seeing the DSC-W200 with 12MP in store. I read many reviews on the DSC-W200, particullary one on CNET and did not like what I read, considering its a Sony, so then considered the DSC-T200. All reviews I found on the DSC-T200 were good so bit the bullet and bought one. Amazon had a great price coupled with a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. Prior to purchasing I went to a local store for hands on, on both the DSC-W200 and DSC-P200 to confirm my choice and also to haggle the price. Best deal I could get was ?299.99 for camera and case. Eventually purchased the camera, spare battery, screen protector (a must)and a case from Amazon all for just over ?300.00 if you look into it. Thanks Amazon. Overall the camera is easy to use once you get to know where the menus are and it takes great shots. Touch screen not to everyones taste though, but i find it great and worht the money on amazon. My only one negative comment is that Sony have not really produced a semi hard protective case, so I have ordered the same case as my wife who own a Sony DSC-T9 as the camera fits the same case.

Customer Review: HD Editing
Great camera with some nice features, including TV on-screen zoom facility via handset - easy to use and no problems encountered yet. Don’t know if it’s relevant but Serif’s MoviePlus5 software supports HD video format (is this the same as AVCHD?) and DVD Authoring. I have not purchased or tried it!
Customer Review: SR1 - You CAN edit - Options
The SR1 is a great camcorder and a quick way to get your own HD footage onto your HDTV via an HDMI cable. But as other reviewers have pointed out - editing is not so simple - AVCHD (.m2t files) is quite new and is not supported yet by the common NLEs (non linear editor programs) Options are: 1. Supplied software will enable you to burn footage to a DVD (-R) which will play as HD in a PS3 (it will NOT play in a normal DVD player which is only SD - standard definition) 2. Elecard sell HD conversion software which converts from AVCHD to HDV which can be edited (most NLEs - Premiere Pro etc) 3. Sony Vegas (version 7e only) and Pinnacle v11 supports AVCHD which will allow you to edit on the PC and (theoretically at least) move the edited footage back to the SR1 for viewing in HD on a HDTV You could of course get a blu-ray burner too!! I think the options will grow as more AVCHD camcorders ship - although anything that edits AVCHD is going to be very processor and memory intensive

Customer Review: Does just what it says!
Got one of these for a relative who isn’t good with modern technology. The key features I was looking for were ease of use, robustness, reasonable image quality and simplicity when transfering movies from SD card to other media. This scores very highly on all these counts. Maybe you could fault it for being a bit too small to hold at times but then you can carry it anywhere in a convenient pocket. It also starts-up very fast! As my relative doesn’t use a computer the fact that they can copy movies straight onto an old fashioned video recorder is a big plus (for those more able, it has all those features you’d expect for copying to PC and making DVDs). Downsides? There isn’t an SD card included in the box (although they’re cheap enough to buy). Buttons are quite stiff to press and hamper both still and video camera operation and where’s the lens cap? I think it’s great value though and if 640×480 video quality is good enough for you then this does it all very well.
Customer Review: sexy kit
got one & used it for 2 weeks holidaying in vegas, day & night time filming was a breeze.photos are poor quality but as a camcorder , great.sound quality is ok but crap on play back via the unit, but thro the tv when back home is great.the drivers for it have poor menue for use on pc so i used another one for it,shame, but thats it, the rest is good news. so well done sanyo.you can have 9 out of ten off me.

Customer Review: Superb for amateur/home footage, not for the pro though.
Despite my title, this is a great little camera. If you want superb picture quality for your home movies and have a HD TV (or are switching to HD) and you like lots of recording time without faffing about with tapes, then this is the camera to go for. However, for the pro (and by pro I mean you need high-quality images for films/documentaries), the high compression values of these consumer hard-disk-based-storage camcorders is a serious compromise. Given that a pro/semi-pro HDV camcorder such as the Sony V1 or Canon XH-A1 store around 16GB of information per hour on DV tapes, and this camera even at it’s highest quality setting only does 7.5GB per hour, you can clearly see that significant picture information is being discarded to achieve these storage ratio’s. At the lowest quality setting, you are only getting 2.6GB per hour, which is very marginal and image quality will undoubtdely suffer. This really defeats the object of having a high-definition camera. For pro use, tape based storage or uncompressed professional hard disk storage are the only option. Additionally, editing the files generated with these camcorders can be tricky, sometimes requiring access to pro-grade advanced editing software, or limiting you to the software provided with the camcorder (which can be very basic). But if you are not into the detail and just want to be able to take good holiday/family shots, then buy this camera. And use the highest quality setting…. you wanted it for the High Definition capability anyway, didn’t you?
Customer Review: I didn’t think I would buy a SONY
I just bought the camcorder from Amazon for my honeymoon trip next august and it’s so cool….I love it even though its expensive but worth it because it will live longer with you due to its new technology … usually I am not satisfied with Sony products because of its lack of features but I liked this one … you should buy a big battery with this one if you want to have more free time and what I did is bought a charger coz if you charge it in the camcorder it will take all day but with the charger it will take 4 hours or less depending on the size of the battery…also try to get the wide angel lens and the tele lens if you want to take nice shots … Upsides: small, elegant, manual focus, high quality still images, HD or SD recording modes, HDMI output ready for hd TVs Downsides: price, batteries is 90 mins only, lack of mini HDMI cable, in HD recording mode you only can see the clips in the camera, PC, and a blue-ray hd dvd players

Customer Review: OK for laptops but watch out for mpeg2
I was prompted to write a review as Tillie’s remarks about the camcorder not being compatible with laptops nearly stopped me buying it. But I thought that surely was incorrect and went ahead. It is of course fine when working with laptops. The drawback that I have found is that it produces MPEG2 video files which will not play on Windows Media Player without non-free add-ons. Very annoying. You may also find that you cannot edit them in Windows Movie Maker either. If you go to Tool/Options/Compatibility and unclick all the filters it seems to work. The camcorder itself seems fine, very light and compact. I hope that constantly poking at the screen in order to select menu items wont damage it eventually. And a special thank you to Amazon: I placed the order at 11:00pm on Sunday night and it was waiting for me when I arrived at work on Tuesday morning. 35 hours delivery: Is this a record. Amazing..
Customer Review: Avoid this camera like the plague!
We bought this camera, at the end of August, after much deliberation and research to take on a special holiday. After our return we loaded the Sony software onto our brand new - less than 7 days old - purpose bought laptop and bingo! - It won’t work. Having spent a week on the helpline to Sony, de-installation and re-installation of our laptop software, getting through 25 discs, (by this time severe headaches) Sony software on and off, Sony have informed us that their software is not guarenteed to work once it leaves their factory, that - even though the laptop has the spec required on their ads and leaflets - that it is not powerful enough for their software and shouldn’t be on a laptop any way - it should only be on a P.C! Never accept Sony products at face value or you’ll be sorely disappointed and end up with a product you cannot use. Thumbs down for this one.

Customer Review: ‘An expensive Toy’
Sorry, but this is an overpriced toy, yes its apparently feature rich, but far too complicated for the average jo and therefore pointless. And the controls are also too fiddly and complicated to access for an aspiring pro. Put it on easy mode and can’t handle dark. The buttons are too small, and you will press the wrong ones on more than one occasion. I can’t comment on the results yet, but I am sure others can tell you the quality levels, I haven’t had a chance yet. I may try and take mine back I am that disappointed..

Customer Review: Superb
After my old JVC camcorder returned home faulty after my sister borrowed it I decided to treat myself to a shiny new HDV camera.

After spending several weeks reading reviews my short list came down to the HC7 and the canon HV20, and eventually decided on the Sony and have not been disappointed. Quite frankly the picture even on a normal def TV is stunning, lovely colours and a very sharp picture.

Its easy to use and I quite like the touch screen although it does get greasy quickly, I’d recommend the screen protectors you can find on ebay.

The manual focus dial is a bit fiddly, if only sony had included a focus ring the camera would be very near perfect, but that said if they did it would probably end up in the prosumer bracket.

The only drawback with Sony is they put their own hotshoe on the camera limiting it to the about 3 mics and a few camera lights, I’ve tried the mics and they are pants really. There is a solution though… you can buy an adaptor for the hotshoe which enables standard mics to be used, but at ?20 for a lump of metal a bit pricey(search on ebay for one).

I really cant fault the camera though, excellent in low light too.

Oh… dont believe the rubbish about HDV tapes, just use the sony premium ones which are about ?1/each.

Customer Review: So small youll probably use it
I bought mine in Singapore but Amazons UK price is now pretty similar. Its a beautifully made bit of kit and so small youll feel like taking it with you. If youre like me, a bigger camcorder rarely leaves the house except for holidays, this will slip in a trouser pocket! As it records on to an SD card you probably need to get at least a 2GB one to have enough room. Files are saved as Quick Time movies to view on a PC but can be viewed on a TV too. As a 6MP still camera its pretty good quality and has different scene settings though a stand alone camera would be a better bet and give more adjustment options. Operation is very simple and it even talks to you to tell you which camera mode you are in; still or movie. If you are an irregular camcorder user I think you will find this a fun and useful product but I agree with the previous reviewer that big hands would be a problem.
Customer Review: Very combo camera - a bit fiddly to hold
A very good still and video camera. Lovely little thing, but that is also its problem; if you have big hands avoid, otherwise buy now.

Customer Review: Brilliant
I have this camera for about 6 months and is excellent. This is my first camcorder but i love it. Takes excellent video quality, easy to use, and quite small to always carry with you. The optical zoom is fantastic, and the picture quality with up to 20x digital zoom is very good as well. Nice and vibrant colours, no pixels whatsoever with optical zoom (mind you though need to use the right setting for the right moment). The only negative is the absence of flashlight and the battery wont last for more than 45mins, hence the 4 stars. I love this liitle gem though and very happy with it.

Customer Review: A no-brainer for your career.
Camcorders are highly underrated. Nowadays people think you can use your phone or digital camera to do the job, but nothing much compares to recording on a tool made for the job. Over the years I’ve recommended that people use a camera like this one to practice making speeches and presentations - this one is just the job - inexpensive, easy to use, and records onto DVDs, so you can watch the playback on your TV. Making presentations and being good on your feet is just so important nowadays. Practise making your speech or presentation on your feet in front of this camera, then review the results. Nothing will give you better, honest feedback than a camcorder - at this price it’s a no-brainer for advancing your career.
Customer Review: Absolutely Fantasic - No Other Way To Describe It
I got this camcorder today although not from amazon i went and got it from currys digital where it was ?149.58 which is cheaper than amazon was at the time and i have to say just how superb it really is! I havent had a camcorder in the past so i cant really compare it to another one but it really is fantastic and i can assure you that you will not get as good value for money with any other camcorder than you get with this it really is superb. Hope this has helped!!

Customer Review: Don’t bother
I bought this book in the belief that it would provide more detail about the 5D than the instruction book did. For example why are the high and low ISO (expansion) ranges protected? We all know that noise increases with ISO speed so why the need to restrict the range? The low is supposed to be due to poor latitude of the sensor - something I found on a web site and wanted to check out. But what are the implications of this and how do I compensate for it? When would it be good to use the low range? It was this sort of information that I hoped the book would contain. The book is written by a person who has used the 5D with the instruction book and added some padding. So if you are expecting some greater insight in to the 5D than the instruction book provides this is not the book. The few photos it contains are in black and white. Recommendation not worth buying. Spend your money on a bigger memory card and experiment.

Customer Review: Works with PC and Apple computers
This is an excellent camera for both still and moving images. I edit using an Apple Computer. Although it isn’t compatible with iMovie 6, a simple upgrade to iMovie 08 solved all my problems. You plug the camera into the computer and stand back, the Apple recognises the camera, launched iMovie, asks to import the movies then creates movies already filed by date. Look no hands !

Customer Review: Dont buy Sony in America
Very good camera which I bought in St Maarten in the Carribean. Could not register it in the UK as I did not have a European registation code and Sony UK were most unhelpful. Dont buy it abroad if you can’t register it in Europe.

Different number for camera in the USA to europe same camera.

Customer Review: cannot download video without a firewire connection
Is it just me then that didn’t realise this!? I’ve had a sony dv camcorder for a number of years but when it went wrong, I decided to change to this highly recommended camcorder.I read all the reviews and it sounded great BUT when I tried to download my first tape using the included usb cable-nothing. Tried my sony firewire cable connected my sony laptop-bingo. But my laptop has too small a screen to edit movies. Got in touch with Canon support to be told the usb cable is for downloading stills and movies from the memory card only. I have no firewire connection on my pc, so I will now have to go and buy a pci card. I know that the firewire will give me faster transfer speeds but I just think more emphasis should be given to the fact that this is a camcorder that will not work out of the box for downloading a movie without-1.buying a firewire and 2.-making sure your pc has a firewire connection. Anyway, still rated it 4* because what I have seen so far, the results are very good. Oh and sorry Amazon-that camcorder I sent you back the other day-I don’t think it has a problem!! But very good customer support in getting me another one delivered so quickly.
Customer Review: KNOCKS THE HELL OUT OF A SONY I HAD

Customer Review: Great product for a great price
The main reason for this purchase was because of the price. It is being sold at a ?200 reduction from Jessops. So that is quite good. The build quality is good as it feels sturdy and reliable. I also bought it because of the DVD capability. It is quite easy to use but needs DVD-RW if you really want to erase and do it again. The operations of the camcorder are good because it is easy to navigate. However you will be needing quite alot (3 to 4) batteries if you want to take loads of videos, because the batteries go quite quickly. This is the only down side to this camcorder. All in all a good all rounded camcorder for a good price. Hope it helps

Customer Review: great performance-indifferent design
My old panasonic mini dv camcorder finally gave up the ghost after 5 years faithful service so I did a fair bit of internet trawling looking for a replacement. It came down to this panasonic and a sony model (dcr hc 47) The sony was a far sexier piece of kit, looks wise, but performance didn’t measure up to the panasonic. The panasonic has a very good optical image stabiliser (not electronic like sony) which is important since camera shake on these small camcorders can be a problem. It also interfaces very smoothly via firewire with my existing editing software (ulead video studio 10 plus) It also helps that I already had a spare SD card from my digital stills camera whereas the sony takes a MMC card. The pictures from the panasonic are excellent - video image is superb and even the still pictures are OK. The zoom is a bit measly (x10) but the digital zoom up to x25 is actually very good. The usability of the camera is also very good-menus are well laid out and easily navigated via a mini joystick and the instruction manual is straightforward. The buttons are all easily reached although I wouldn’t want my hands to be much smaller as the zoom slider does sit quite high up. It offers a very easy point and shoot experience and has enough manual functions to keep a ‘fiddler’ like me happy. The downsides-It is not pretty (very well finished and well laid out)but no looker. You will not get envious glances from other parents when filming the school nativity play but if you rate performance over show-off appeal this is a great camera.
