Customer Review: Easy to use Camcorder
I have owned a Camcorder for the past 10 years and decided it was time to upgrade to a new model / type to take advantage of the new smaller units now available. Before deciding what type of Camcorder to buy ( Tape / DVD / Hard Drive ) I decided to use the Amazon site for feedback and re search. I finally decided to buy the Sony DCR-DVD306 Handycam DVD Camcorder. I have now owned the Camcorder for 1 month and have been pleased with the all round performance. The camcorder is easy to operate, small and light to carry and produces good results in both good and low light conditions. The quality of still pictures is not particularly great if taken in ‘zoom’ mode. I was concerned over comments about the controls being difficult to operate, I have not found any difficulty, I have also found transfering the recordings by either PC or through the TV fairly straight forward although it took me some time to set up the transfer the first time.

The Camcorder is not supplied with a very powerfull battery or a seperate charger, these are available from Sony after registration at a 25% discount, you will need a more powerfull battery if not a fast charger, accessories are a bit pricy even after the discount !

Overall I am pleased with the product, functions, quality and performance.

Customer Review: Sony DVD306E review.
This is my first DVD camcorder replacing my old Canon MV400i and I have found it a pleasure to use. It is copmpact in your hand and the touch screen is a great feature. The picture and sound quality are excellent and conncecting to my computer was a doodle whether it was via the supplied USB cable or simply inserting the 8cm DVD.

Customer Review: can not get better for the price
i got one of these and have used it loads and got more than my moneys worth the picture is good the sound is good it takes some amazing still photos and has a massive 33x optical zoom so can get right up close to most things you can see in very clear detail pretty easy to use but with things to try as you get better at using it like the manual focus and different shutter speeds i wood say get a tripod if you have unsteady hands and you will see a difference happy filming
Customer Review: Extremely Disappointed
I have spent hours trying to get this camera to register on my PC. I purchased a firewire card and TWO cables to no avail. The picture is grainy. I lost a whole day of footage in Barcelona. I am extremely disappointed in this camcorder.

Customer Review: Good for the money
Got this camcorder today and I have been impressed with its performance so far. Picture is far superior to my old Sony handicam 8mm. The size is excellent, like all HDD camcorders, but the best thing is the price, ?250 for a HDD camcorder! The only thing I can identify as a negative point is that the lens cap is not part of the camcorder body, instead it is tethered to the camcorder and needs to be fitted each time it is not in use. An integral lens cap would be much better, but I think JVC have identified this on their newer versions. All in all excellent value for money, Sony and Panasonic cannot touch this on price.
Customer Review: great cam
This is my first camera so can’t really compare, this is a tiny camera, looks great and feels solid. The recording time is really good and the quality is great, really easy to use and there are loads of features to mess around with, only downside is the connection to Mac, i have a Apple iBook, and it can be quite annoying trying to export movies into iMovie/iDvd, it can be done, just takes a bit of messing around… would highly reccomend camera though.

Panasonic HDC-SD5EG High Definition Camcorder - Memory Format

Panasonic HDC-SD5EG High Definition Camcorder - Memory Format
Customer Review: Panasonic HDC-SD5 camcorder
I have tended to stick to Sony camcorders but decided to try the Panasonic after reading a couple of reviews of it. On receiving the camcorder and opening the box I was amazed at its incredibly small size. The control buttons are all well laid out at the back of the camera and the functions for operating the camera (accessed by the joystick) are easy to understand, the only niggle being the very small joystick which is very fiddly to operate. The camera is very comfortable in use with the side contoured to fit the palm of the hand. The camera gave excellent clear video and photographs due no doubt to the 3 CCD and the Leica lens. The supplied software is very basic but there is another disk with Pinnacle Studio HD but unfortunately this is a trial version. For some strange reason when downloading video or photos to a computer the supplied AC adapter has to be used and this means removing the battery so I suppose a card reader would come in useful here. One big disappointment was that the camera does not come supplied with a SDHC card so you have to buy your own; these are around 50 to 60 pounds for an 8GB class 6 non Panasonic one and hold approx 85min at full HD. All in all I would not hesitate in recommending this camcorder.

Xacti VPC-CG65 is the new addition to the Sanyo Digital Camcorder/Camera range. The Sanyo VPC-CG65 improves from the Sanyo VPC-CG6 by adopting H.264 advanced video compression technology which basially means the same SD/SDHC card can record 25% longer! The H.264 advanced video codec also makes it much easier to transfer the footage to iPod Video or posting on the internet.

Customer Review: Excellent Value, glad I bought this one!
Bought this cam a few days ago from Amazon (received in less than 18 hours!) and this is an instant hit! There is a review which states this cam has a cheap tinny feel to it, but Ive no idea where that comes from. Im a 6ft man and so my hands are fairly big, but the cam is perfect size and poses no problems there.. the menu nav system is easy to manage and again ive no problems with the user interface. Im not really upto scratch on the specs of recent devices, but this cam has very good quality when viewing the vids on a mac (yes its highly compatible on my mac) and the zoom is pretty impresive too (although when finger is on zoom the focus is abit off). Battery power seems reasonable, ive not given that a full test yet though! Like I said, I’ve only had the cam a few days but I really cant fault it in any department and especially for its price, size etc.. so why not 5 stars..? Well the only negative I can state is that the lens has a manual cap and in time im sure that will get loose or break.. (also there was no SD card included, but I guess thats not really a problem with the cam). I doubt I’d have been as happy if I’d chosen a different one.
Customer Review: Really nice piece of Kit
Bought this after reading all the reviews and discussions I could find on the web. Opinion is mostly good with the odd bad review here and there. One important point i came across is that this camera saves files in a format (mp4) that needs a good codec to read it. there are apparently some not so good codecs and players out there that will make the films on here look badly pixelated. With the right codec the picture quality is excellent. I love this camcorder it is well thought out. to transfer to pc all you need do is plug in usb and drag it across. you save on the weight of Hard drive camcorders and gain a plus in convenient size and weight. It is easy to use out of the box, good battery life and all the more complex settings are available if you should wish to use them. For the price I would say it is amazing

Travel and Scenic Photography

Travel and Scenic Photography 101

When you’re driving through the mountains somewhere, and you notice a car parked half off the road and some guy leaning to the left to avoid a branch with his Rebel 2000 camera in the act of focusing, you’ve met me. I do this because, to me, a trip isn’t fulfilling unless I’ve preserved that beauty for posterity. I’d like to share some of the techniques that make scenic photography such a wonderful artform - simple, yet elegant.

First off, equipment. As much as the cheapo disposable camera beckons, get real. These cameras have fisheye lenses which I call “spam” lenses. They cram everything in, with equal blurriness and boringness. Good photos are sharp, unless you use blur for artistic effect. Sharp comes from an adjustable lens. It can be a fixed lens or a zoom, but it must focus specially for each picture. Fixed lenses are limiting for scenic pictures, where to frame the shot you may need to move long distances. Imagine using a fixed lens on the Washington Monument, when you’re half a block away! Zooms get my vote, even though they often don’t have as wide an aperture, which limits their capabilities in low light situations.

Practically speaking, an SLR is the absolute best. They are lightweight, and can be used with top quality lenses. Film SLRs tend to be less expensive, but have the limitations of film, meaning you have to get it developed and so forth. Digital SLRs are VERY expensive, so for the budget conscious either go with a film SLR or a high quality basic digital camera. With digital, resolution is also a critical factor, so look at the specs before you buy.

OK, we’ve got the camera, emotions are running high, and that’s great, but not too great! Sometimes I find a spot that is so wonderful, I start shooting like a madman, only to be disappointed by the pictures. What happened? Emotions. When you experience a place, there are sounds, aromas and breezes as well as the visuals of the spot. Needless to say, you can’t photograph all of these elements, only the visual. When overwhelmed by the spectacle of a scenic hotspot, we are often overwhelmed by all of these elements.

So what to do? Look through your camera. The viewfinder does not lie (usually). Try to see what you are looking at as the finished picture. Most people perfunctorily take pictures, hoping that somehow the shot will come out great. If you wonder how the pictures came out when you are on the way to the drug store to get them, you’re doing something wrong. At the moment you click the pic, you should know exactly what you will get. (Of course with digital, that’s not a trick!).

Now, I was a tad dishonest in saying that you can’t capture all of the elements of a scene. You can hint at them. For starters, motion. Yes, even in a still picture, there is motion. Something happened before, during and after your picture. In a mountain vista scene, you may find something that hints at motion, whether it be a branch of a tree that has been swaying in the breeze, or a river flowing through the valley below. These add a sense of motion.

Then there’s the “rule of thirds.” When you place the main object of the picture smack-dab in the middle, it is static and boring. Place it one third of the way from either side, and you IMPLY motion. Put the horizon in a landscape photo a third of the way up or down, not across the middle.

Remember, when a person looks at a picture, their eyes move. You want to frame your photo to help that movement. If you can find some lines in the scene, such as a skyline, cloud formation, path through the forest, etcetera, use it interestingly, and with the rule of thirds to draw your viewer’s eyes into the picture.

Avoid “summit syndrome.” You get to the top of Mount Washington and shoot the majestic vista. Great. The pictures come out … boring! How? No PERSPECTIVE. Big vistas will be flat unless you have an object in the foreground, such as a rock or a tree, to give them perspective. Then the eye really grasps how big this scene is. People enjoying the view is a real winner, because the viewer may identify with their emotions, giving the image real impact.

Cheese! Yes, you do have to take the family photos. It’s obligatory. But when you do, make sure that they show the LOCATION of the photo. Otherwise, you might as well do it on your driveway. Frame the scene in context, with landmarks as part of the picture. Find a way to tell as story in the picture, such as little Sara climbing up the rocks by the waterfall.

Finally, any element in the picture that hints at more senses than just the visual will make it remarkable. Actor headshots for example, tell a story about the subject. You can almost hear them saying their next lines. If you photograph a garden, the viewer may experience the aroma of the flowers. A tourist street with an accordion player on the corner may have your amazed friends whistling “Dixie.”

In summation, picture taking on travel is recording the experience in a satisfying way. Use motion, perspective, sensory, storytelling and so forth, to bring your photos to life. Oh, and needless to say, make your job easy and go to great places! See you at the overlook!

Customer Review: Excellent value for the $$$!
I had this camera and the D3 on order ever since they were annouced, with my luck the D300 came in first! I just picked it up today! Although I need the D3’s full frame more! However, it is an excellent camera for the $$, I only paid $1800+ tax, mind you I spend a lot at my dealer over the years! I owned and still own a couple of Nikons, so for me it was a very easy transition, and finally Nikon has a good comprehensive manual to go wth the camera ifyou need any help. Also, for the first time the Capture NX is included - sort of: Ok I had to download it, and insert the product key, regardless this is a good step by Nikon, and it was about time!! The focusing screen is much better designed now, and if you get the MD-D10 multi-power battery pack for the built in motor drive, it will be faster than my D2X and also has a lot bigger buffer up to 100 shoots for jpg, vs only 35 on my D2X, and with the right adapter BL-3 it will take the same high capacity battery as my D2X uses! The only drawback is that nobody has the BL-3 adapter in STOCK! As for image quality, it is excellent even at higher ISO, I tested the D300 at 400, 800 and 1600 ISO, unlike the D2X which is only good up to 320 or maybe 400 before some noise is noticable and gets worse very fast after that as ISO is increased. (I am not talking about for 4×6″ prints or just looking on the monitor but for 11×14″prints and up!!) I highly recommend this camera, it is better than my more expensive D2X or D2Xs, performance and price wise!!! In fact you could buy 2 DX300s for the cost of one D2Xs! Finally Nikon has a winner!
Customer Review: Excellent Camera, Lots of features, great image quality
I have used this camera for only a few days and am very satisfied and enthusiastic. Nikon has made an excellent product. I won’t bother writing about the various technical features. Those are already amply detailed in the camera description. Here are a few first impressions that I have of the camera: You can change ISO very quickly and it goes up to 3200. Very useful. There are many playback features such as zooming in close on an image and navigating around in it. A big improvement over previous models. The new playback screen is much bigger and has an awesome resolution. You can live preview on it. Very cool! There are several focus options, including the 51 point focus. You can press help on any menu item and it will explain what that item is clearly and easy to read. The menu is easy to navigate and easy to use. The 421 page User’s Manual may seem daunting at first, but it’s very clearly written and has several ways to cross-reference what you are looking for The camera is comfortable to hold, has a solid feel and all of the controls are within easy reach. Shooting mode, ISO and most other controls can be easily changed without going into the menu. All the above are features, but the most important benefit is excellent and sharp images. If you would like to see some samples, email me and I will send you a link so you can check them out. I am very satisfied and I am glad I bought this camera. I may add to this review as I use this camera more. I just wanted to write a review to express how satisfied I am.

Customer Review: A simple & easy to use camera with great results!
I’ve owned the SONY DSC-P72 for well over a year now and I’ve been nothing but happy with it. The functions and options are easy to use in the well displayed menu options on the camera. The quality of picture is fantastic. Even the “motion picture” option gives a clear picture with good recorded sound. I highly recommend purchasing an additional memory stick, as the camera only comes with a 16MB stick included. This is not much space at all, especially if you plan to use the “movie” function. As the camera supports Pro Memory Stick’s, this allows you to purchase a stick that holds huge amounts of storage space for very little extra money. I think it’s something about compressing the information, but however it works, there is no loss of quality at all. I bought a 512MB stick for the camera and never ran out of space on a two week holiday where I went photo and filming crazy. The camera’s zoom function is good, but be warned that you can not use the zoom whilst filming. No huge hassle but worth pointing out! When the camera is fully charged the batteries seem to last for ages. But charging the cameras batteries to their limit does take a while. The charger and batteries are all included with the camera by the way! The batteries are just rechargeable AA batteries so in the case of a camera ‘emergency’ you can just use standard AA batteries. This can be very handy when you’re on holiday etc. Putting the photos on your home computer and/or printing them off couldn’t be simpler! The whole process is explained simply from start to finish, and the camera comes with all the software you need for the photos. All in all, I thought the camera was a fantastic buy and does exactly what I want it to do. I’m no professional photographer, but for everyday use, the SONY DSC-P72 is a simple and easy to use camera that delivers great looking results. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Not So Good
I bought the Sony DSC P72 digital camera in July 2003. At the time it had rave reviews and was supposedly one of the best mid range digital cameras to buy. I am not a great photographic buff, but it produces perfectly good quality still photos. The only problem with this camera is that if you want to take photos of any moving objects (Such as children) the camera will take the photo long after the subject has moved on to something more interesting. It still delays taking the photo even if you hold the shutter release so all the computation is done before fully releasing it. In comparison with my old Canon 35mm SLR it is just too slow. I understand this is a general problem of digital photography and that new cameras are faster. If you’ve got children or want to take any other quick snaps, get a newer (or better) camera, not the Cybershot DSC P72.
