Customer Review: Excellent - beautiful camcorder
I replaced my old tape camcorder for this and immediately it struck me - no more would I need a mountain of tapes that are a pain to copy for editing and then don’t have the courage to tape over and re-use. Forget hoping that the tape wouldn’t run out at the critical part in the wedding or fiddling with an tape insert and a biro to try and keep some semblance or order to the holiday films. OK enough about my bad habits and old woes.

This camcorder is glorious, I play the footage back through a 720p projector and its crisp ,sharp and mind blowingly detailed. The sound is clear and with the added bluetooth wireless mic that I bought afterwards allows the recorded sound to really follow the action.

The unit fits comfortably in hand, the build quality is sturdy and the weight makes for a steady shot without feeling like you’re carrying a lead bar.

The fold out screen is bright and very highly detailed. Indoor low light performance sucks - that was until I bought another add on - the light attachment - now its great.

Best of all - is the ‘easy’ button which handles all the settings and I haven’t felt the need to change it yet.

The price is a serious investment and the add ons are steep as well (I do recommend the light and extended battery) but if you have any HD equipment or are planning to upgrade why would you want to watch your once only memories on anything less? As for the format - don’t worry so much about editing - Sony Vegas Platinum 8 (

I love this bit of kit.

Customer Review: Great - as long as you don’t plan to use the footage for anything.
This camera *IS* good - but there is a problem that renders it about as useful as a brick to the home-moviemaker.

The AVCHD Codec.

At the time of this writing - the ‘direct to digital’ format that this camera makes its movies in is unreadable by standard windows machines. If you want to be able to use the movies you’re going to have to shell out for expensive converter software *in addition* to the money you’ve already spent on the camera.

If you expect ‘out of the box usability’ (*cough* Sony Customer Service *cough*) I’d either steer well clear of this camera or wait until the codec technology catches up.

Customer Review: Excellent Camera for a Fantastic Price
I bought this camera recently with the arrival of our first child to be able to record general bits and pieces as all new dad’s do! For the cost I wasn’t expecting a great deal but I’ve been really surprised at how easy and well this camcorder performs. For someone who just wants to take general video of ’stuff’ you really can’t do much better than this for the price, a friend of mine was a bit dismissive of it however he’s a professional and spends more on his kit than most people do their houses but for the price he had to conceed it certainly does the job!

JVC 30GB Hard Disk Camcorder

Customer Review: Simple Camcorder - Great Price
I also don’t understand the previus reviewer giving it one star. The camcorder is so easy to use my kids can do it and after using it myself AND using the provided software in the box transferring off the hard drive is a piece of cake. The only reason I can think of that someone may have problems is if they try to use another application to import their media, but JVC give you the Cyberlink in the box!! Anyway, yes the files are .MOD and are not usual file extensions, but with the provided Cyberlink software there is no way you can go wrong, great cam!
Customer Review: GZ-MG130
I’ve had this camera for about six months now and I am very impressed with it. I don’t understand why the other guy was having such problems with it? When I transfer it on to he PC I use the Cyberlink software that was provided and it does what I need it too. Without too much effort I can transfer my files on to a DVD and I’ve also played around with converting the .MOD files into .AVI using Power Director. I have a MacBook Pro that I use and it works on there too. Although I didn’t get any Mac software with the camera, I don’t need it as I have iLife 08 installed and it works brilliantly with it. Overall I am happy with this camera and when it comes time to upgrade (in a few years I hope!!) I will again be looking for a JVC.

Once again, Nikon has upped the ante in the world of digital cameras with the introduction of the Coolpix 5000. Its 5-megapixel sensor, 28-85mm zoom lens, and extensive controls make this a great choice for discriminating photographers seeking a digital camera with filmlike quality and SLR-style manual controls.

In a departure from previous flagship Coolpix models, the 5000 is very compact (much smaller than the older 900-series models) and looks more or less like a traditional point-and-shoot. It does not employ the trademark Coolpix swiveling-lens design; instead, on this model, it’s the LCD display that does the swiveling. The screen can be flipped out from the camera body and rotated for easy viewing from any shooting angle–it even works for a self-portrait. An added bonus to this design is the ability to tuck the vulnerable display inward for protection when the camera is not in use. Of course, images can also be composed by looking through the traditional optical viewfinder.

The Coolpix 5000 features a 3x zoom lens–the most common power for zoom digital cameras. It’s the range that sets the Coolpix apart–its widest setting is an unusually wide 28mm, perfectly matching the wide-angle setting on most SLR cameras. Almost every other digital camera’s wide-angle starts at 35 or 38mm. The all-glass lens features nine elements in seven groups.

Power is provided by a proprietary lithium-ion EN-EL1 battery rated for approximately 100 minutes of use (battery and charger are included). If you’re worried about getting caught in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery, the camera also uses a standard disposable lithium 2CR5 camera battery. Unused lithium batteries hold their power for years, so you’ll probably want to toss one of these into your camera bag as a backup. For hardcore photographers, there’s also an optional power pack/hand grip that uses six AA batteries and offers several times the power capacity of the rechargeable pack.

We’ve come to expect Coolpix cameras to offer an extensive set of manual controls, and the 5000 offers sports than we can list here, including shutter speeds from 1/4,000 to 8 seconds, shutter priority, aperture priority, and full manual modes, manual focus and white balance, ISO ratings from 100 to 800, and numerous other settings to let photographers capture any shot they can dream up. See our product specs for more details.

An extensive selection of accessories has helped to make Coolpix cameras favorites with serious photographers. From wide angle and telephoto add-on lenses to an adapter that lets you use the camera as a scanner for your slides and negatives, Nikon offers enough add-ons to create a system that meets all of your needs.

Shutter lag–the delay between the time you press the button and the moment the camera actually captures the photo–is a problem with most digital cameras, and the Coolpix 5000 is no exception. The camera can take over a second to snap your picture after pressing the button, which can be an unacceptably long time, especially if you’re trying to take a picture of a quick-moving subject. Most of this delay can be eliminated by prefocusing–composing your shot, then pressing the shutter button halfway down to allow the camera to adjust the focus and metering. When you’re ready to take the picture, press the button the rest of the way down, and the shutter will snap almost instantly.

Movie mode captures movie clips with audio at resolutions of 320 x 240 pixels at approximately 15 frames per second for up to 40 seconds. This feature won’t replace your camcorder, but it’s perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

The Coolpix 5000 comes with a rechargeable EN-EL1 battery and charger, a 32 MB CompactFlash card, video and USB cables, lens cap, neck strap, and an impressive software suite that includes Genuine Fractals LE. The camera is covered by a one-year warranty.

Customer Review: Still a great camera
Even in mid 2005 the Nikon Coolpix 5000 is a remarkable digital camera. In skilled hands this camera can produce results that rival even today’s best professional digital cameras. I’ve made several 16×20 prints from images taken with the Coolpix 5000 that look AMAZING. If you add the available wide angle lens to this camera you can get a fabulous 19mm wide angle lens!!! Nikon even offers an amazing fisheye lens for this camera. Like any digital camera (or film camera for that matter) this camera has its flaws and limits. Even though it’s capable of producing excellent images, it’s a slow camera. So, if speed is important to you this camera is not a great choice. Likewise, some of the controls are burried in the menu system and this camera is really designed for EXPERIENCED photographers … most “point-and-shoot” photographers have a very hard time using this camera. There are newer cameras on the market … but the Coolpix 5000 can still compete with the best of them. If you want a good digital camera capable of super-wide-angle photography, the Coolpix 5000 and the available wide angle lens is the BEST buy on the market today. As of July 2005 you can buy this camera and the available wide angle lens in excellent used condition for less than the price of most new point-and-shoot digitals that deliver WORSE image quality.
Customer Review: Can’t See in the Dark
I have had this camera for a while now, and I have taken some excellent pictures with it. I use a Macintosh, and it works with the computer beautifully, in contrast with the Olympus camera that I owned previously. The adjustable screen is nice and the zoom suits my needs. However, I cannot get this camera to work in the dark. It just wont. I went searched the manual for an answer and found none. It drives me insane. It’s great for daytime shots, but in low light I might as well not have it. I’m still glad I bought it, but I was dissapointed by this aspect.

Customer Review: Good Deal
Well I’ve owned this camera for about 3 months now and it has served me well at home and abroad. It was my first digital camera and it was very easy to use. I opened it and used it at the airport before departure in a matter of minutes. There are many functions on it, but I only wanted it for simple pics, which have all come out great, even in motion. So I highly recommed it.
Customer Review: It was ok
The quality of a majority of my pictures were bad. The camera had a hard time focusing and resulted in low quality images. The video part of the camera was good, but the pictures weren’t.

Customer Review: Don’t believe the myths!
I’ve had this for over a year now, using it many times over the period having bought it to use on our 10th wedding anniversary in Kenya with safari followed by the beach resort. The camera is good, with MANY excellent features, having upgraded to digital from my OM2 Spot Program after 20+ years. I read a lot of reviews, some mentioning “Purple Fringing”, well so far I haven’t suffered from that problem albiet it that I mainly shoot at 3 million pixels and not 8 million for emailing purposes, though even that restricts you to 3-4 pictures at a time with broadband. You get what you pay for in life, the serious pro will proberbly go for the Nikon or Canon with a slightly less shutter lag, which lets be fair is annoying when you are used to 35mm instantanious shutter reaction. I have updated the camera / memory cards via the Sony website from ver.1 to ver.2, very easy and I didn’t need to buy any extra cables / units to do it either.
Customer Review: Excellent camera, only minor niggles
I got my 828 just before Christmas 04 and thought I’d use it for a while before writing a review. Before buying it, I agonised long and hard about whether it was the right choice, given all the press about purple fringing, noise at high ISO, manual viewfinder/display switch, etc. However, the upsides finally outweighed these for me, such as the fast Zeiss lens, wide zoom range (starting at 28mm equivalent, rather than 35mm as for some rivals), rotatable body (I use this a LOT) and the dual storage media (I upgraded from a DSC-P71, and had some investment in Memory sticks). Having lived with it for the last ~6 months, I can honestly say that I love it. Despite an initial steep learning curve with all the functions, the flexibility that this gives (once you get to grips with it) really allows much greater creativity than with a point and shoot. The rotating body is fantastic - you can use it like a Hasselblad, as well as over the head in crowds. My memory sticks were the old type (not Pro), and I find that using a 40x CF is much faster, particularly when taking multiple shots. With regard to the niggles, I do see PF in some shots (usually reflections of the sun), although nothing that really impacts on the photo and usually only visible at high magnification). Likewise the noise at >ISO100 is noticeable; use of a tripod to allow lower ISO helps, and I also have used Neat Image to remove excess noise with good results. The manual switch between the viewfinder and the display was initially a pain, but get used to it and it becomes second nature - not a problem. In summary, I have been really pleased with the 828 and the downsides really have not been a problem.

DSCH9S 8.1MP 3 TILT LCD SUPER HAD CCD PICTBRIDGE UK

Customer Review: A Great Camera
This Sony camera is perfect for non-professionals. So unless you are Ben and just want to take simple pictures - this camera will be for you. It is simple to use and the 3″ tilting screen is helpful and saves having to get on your knees if you are taking low shots!! The black version is obviously just the same and would save you a little, but silver is the new black which is the new white or something like that?! A great buy, has excellent features and nice high quality res on the photos.
Customer Review: Fantastic camera
