Sony DCR-SR190E Hard Disc Drive Camcorder With 2.7” LCD Screen
HDD HANDYCAM 40GB H/DR 1/3 CLEARVID 4 M/PXL STL REC G NS

Customer Review: Works with PC and Apple computers
This is an excellent camera for both still and moving images. I edit using an Apple Computer. Although it isn’t compatible with iMovie 6, a simple upgrade to iMovie 08 solved all my problems. You plug the camera into the computer and stand back, the Apple recognises the camera, launched iMovie, asks to import the movies then creates movies already filed by date. Look no hands !

Customer Review: Dont buy Sony in America
Very good camera which I bought in St Maarten in the Carribean. Could not register it in the UK as I did not have a European registation code and Sony UK were most unhelpful. Dont buy it abroad if you can’t register it in Europe.

Different number for camera in the USA to europe same camera.

Customer Review: Great little bag
I bought this bag specifically for a new point and shoot digital camera with underwater housing and a number of accessories. It works like a dream and is like Dr Who’s Tardis inside. Intregal cloth and water proof cover are great too. It also has internal pockets, adjustable dividers and slots for memory cards. Really amazing quality and funtionality for such a small bag at a very reasonable price. I chose it as I know Lowepro make great camera bags having owned a bigger version for my SLRs that has kept them safe around the world for years

JVC GR-DX28EK F1.2 Lens Digital Camcorder
Customer Review: Simple!!
As a 1st time buyer of a camcorder, i must admit it stayed in the box for a few weeks, as the instructions looked scary!! But i must admit, it is v v easy to understand. Should be renamed- the camcorder for dummies. Simple it may be, but the picture and sound quality you cannot fault. Now i am a camcorder user, there is 1 downside-this model does not have a memory card slot enabling you to send clips via e-mail etc or protect your special files/clips. Saying that, all in all, if you want a camcorder to just switch on, record, play back or keep on tape. This is brilliant!! There are other features you can play around with for the more advanced when recording so for me its a best-buy.
Customer Review: A solid mini digital cam
In a few words ….this is simply a bargain packed with features exceptional quality and small enough to pop in your pocket , unlike the bind of taking other camcorders out with you , I think the family will enjoy using this unlike the larger camcorders that only come out at christmas and holidays etc. Highly recommeded.I got it for an absolute bargain price under ?200!!

JVC GR-DVP7 Mini-DV Digital Camcorder [DV-in/out]
Customer Review: JVC GRDVP 7
This was my first intro into digital video and I wanted a blend of specification giving small footprint ie very easy to fit in the pocket with good quality stills as well as video. I also wanted to edit with good results, hence dv in/out. The camara is certainly small and it needs practice to make sure that the buttons are pressed correctly. The touch sensitive menu controls are not good but adequate. The quality of the video and stills in good light are excellent but suffer in low light conditions. For autofocus you need good contrast for best results. Using the camcorder with Pinacle Studio 8 is a breeze and you can easily get very proffessionl results. The downsides of the camara are low light performance and distance shots with such a small lens are not brilliant. That having been said its a great little camcorder, fits in the pocket and worth the money.

Aiptek T250LE PocketDV Digital Camcorder (5.0MP, 4x Optical Zoom) 1.5″ TFT LCD
Amazon Price: ?65.87
Customer Review: Very happy!!
Bought this with no real expectations, but for money I cant fault it. Starts up in a matter of seconds, one touch recording, one button to take a reasonable 5 megapixel photo, all recorded and stored on an SD card. If you are looking for a camcorder/camera that you can take anywhere and not having to worry about it too much in comparison to an expensive alternative this does the job very well. Plays back on my TV in good quality (720*480) and also plays with no trouble though my Windows Media Player. Takes AA batteries which is a blessing in disguise as i am getting fed up with all the chargers i have around the house. I can pick up batteries anywhere on my travels, but i do try and use my rechargable batteries. Thinking of buying another for my god son as it would make a great gift for Christmas, as he can then capture all those moments you normally miss!!

Sony DCR-IP220 MICROMV Digital Camcorder [MICROMV in/out]
Sony’s 2-megapixel DCR-IP220 digital camcorder is a serious recording tool for the digital videographer wanting all of Sony’s advanced features in a single package. The DCR-IP220 records on the miniscule MicroMV tapes, offers Super Nightshot and Night Framing modes, Hologram AF auto-focusing and Bluetooth connectivity. Unfortunately, all of these hefty features add up to a fairly hefty price.

But assuming that cost isn’t an object, this camcorder does pretty much anything you’d want it to. The MicroMV tapes–70 percent smaller than MiniDV–each have a 64 KB memory chip so you can scan through different sections of the tape like a DVD, locating scenes by their thumbnails.

The high-detail 2.5-inch LCD swings above the camcorder, and pivots 270-degrees so you can view it from almost any angle–including in front of the camera. With the camcorder’s remote control, you can even start and stop recording while including yourself in the frame. The LCD also serves as a touch-screen interface, with a stylus for accessing menus, and it displays both approximate battery life and remaining storage space in minutes.

For storing short clips and still images (at 1600 by 1200 resolution), the DCR-IP220 features a Memory Stick slot and includes an 8 MB stick. Its night and low-light filming capabilities are quite impressive–allowing for details to be read from across a darkened room with the Super NightShot mode. And the Night Framing mode takes bright, full-colour still images in limited light.

Connectivity options abound, with FireWire (either camera-to-camera or camera-to-PC), USB and Bluetooth support built into the camcorder. It also includes a colour viewfinder, intelligent pop-up flash and an adequate (although not stellar) 10x optical zoom.

Sony’s DCR-IP220 isn’t for the faint of wallet, but if you’re not satisfied with anything but the best, this camcorder was built for you. –J Curtis

Customer Review: Sony’s Magical Micro MV Marvel
This is my first Micro MV Digital camcorder, and the first thing that struck me about the camera was its small size and extremely light weight. I recently took this camera on holliday and I only managed to use 2 60min MGR-60 tapes (only a little bigger than a large postage stamp) the sigle charge on the battery lasted the whole recording tiem and multiple playbacks - amazing. The Video & Audio pickup quality are unbelievably good and the user interface is superb. The inbuilt DSC is alright but even though this is the best DSC/DCR on the market i would use a seperate DSC for the majority of you pics (DSCV1 highly recommended) Both the nightsot and night framing features of this camera are good and produce some fun photos and videos. Sony’s Movie shaker software that comes with the camera is pretty good but download the updates first. also makee sure your HDD is very large 1x 60min tape = just under 6gb.

Customer Review: JVC GR-DVX400
I’ve had the JVC GR-DVX400 for about 18 months now and give it regularuse. It is reliable, has good build quality, lightweight and is easy tooperate. The supplied battery has acceptable duration (45 minutes withLCD screen on), but I would recommend you buy a spare or more powerfulbattery type if you are a heavy user. The camera has a selection of special effects etc, most of which I neveruse but some ie. shutter speed/light/image speed compensation are handy tohave. The controls for recording and playback are well positioned for’thumb’ operation; the grip is comfortable for single-handed use. The remote control is useful for steady tripod recording or general TVplayback. The camera comes supplied with enough connectivity to keepnearly everyone happy, but does not come with DV-in and I can’t findanywhere that can enable it on this model, although it is not a problem ifyou send you complete movies to VHS, PC or DVD. Overall a big thumbs up for an easy and very usable DV Camera.

How to take Great Photos of Your Pet

We all love our animals. They do such funny, adorable, and cute things. But somehow when that camera comes out they run and hide or they just seem to always be pointed away from the camera when you push the button. Well here are some tips to help you have a better chance at getting great photos of your pet.

1. Don’t wake your pet out of deep sleep and attempt to coerce him into performing for the camera. It won’t happen. Try to take photos of your pet during their routine playtime.

2. If there is enough daylight to take photos then turn the flash off. My cat has learned to close his eyes just before the flash goes off. He learned that little trick quick too! Many times a camera flash is just too bright for them, that’s why they point away from you when they know that you’re taking photos.

3. Don’t try to get them looking into the camera. If there is someone around who can play with your pet just get a shot of them playing with someone else. You can have the photo with the person and the pet or get close to crop the person out of the shot.

4. If your pet always runs away from you every time you pull the camera out try leaving the camera sit out where it can be seen. Take photos of other things in the home and try turning the flash off.

5. Be prepared to grab your camera and take photos when your pet is ready, read “doing something cute.” I’ve been able to get some of the best photos of my cat when he’s just doing something on his own.

Remember don’t put pressure on your animal to perform for the camera. Think more on the lines of catch them in their natural habitat. Our pets want to make us happy and you can easily confuse them by pressuring them to look good for the camera. Also be prepared to take a whole lot of bad photos for that one really good one.

Customer Review: Returned the item to fault battery supplied
I got the item delievered to my address before the estimated delivery date. I was very happy to see my camera. But what followed was not I expected. The batter & the charger kit was a faulty one. It was not charging at all. I returned the item and got the money back (with the postage charge). This is my experience though. Thanks, VeePee
Customer Review: Sony what ??
I was very happy with the purchase - the camera is light, very easy to use and perfect for my situation. Ideal for students/backpackers and the facilities on offer. As mentioned above, deleting pics can be a pain (as this can only be done individually). I already had several memory cards so it was very much a plus they were compatible. Good purchase (first time I am ever purchasing a digital camera). I have to admit when I first saw it the camera looked like a toy and the appearance didn’t look fantastic. The camera is cool though. Hope this helps.

Customer Review: Incorrect product description
This battery charger does NOT work with a Nikon D50 digital SLR camera. This is despite the fact that it is being sold as a D50 charger. If you have a Nikon D50, then please do not make the mistake that I did and order this item. You will find that the battery is way too big for the charger. Obviously someone at Amazon has made a mistake here.

Removing a Textured Pattern from a Scanned Photo - 5 Minute Digital Fix

One of the most common problems when dealing with scanned photographs as part of a digital restoration activity is that after scanning, the digital image appears to have a textured pattern to it.

This is often caused by the fact that the photograph in question has been printed on textured photographic paper.

This article will show you how to remove the un-desirable pattern effect without significantly loosing any of the important image detail.

The problematic photo may well be an old black and white, sepia, or even a more modern colour photograph.

(I remember Kodak introducing their “Silk finish” prints many years ago printed on a silky sheen textured paper!).

The example image on our web-site is an old black and white wedding photograph that has been printed on a textured paper.

If you look closely at the white cornice behind the bride and groom you can clearly see that the textured pattern of the photographic paper has been faithfully re-produced during the scanning of the photo.

Before we commence any major restoration work we would like to remove as much of the un-desirable textured pattern as is possible.

Step 1

Open the image up in Adobe Photoshop and the first step is to create a duplicate (copy) layer of the original image by selecting Layer-> Duplicate Layer .. and give the new layer an appropriate name.

Zoom in close enough to get an appreciation of how severe the textured pattern is, but keep some picture detail visible (especially people’s faces) so that you can easily judge how well the texture removal is proceeding without loosing too much important picture detail.

Step 2

With the duplicate layer active apply a Gaussian Blur by selecting Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur …

A pop-up option box will allow you to set the amount of Gaussian blur to apply to the image.

I generally start with a Radius = 1.5 and work up from there, constantly looking at the image to see the affect as I increase the blur radius.

Anything over a Radius = 5.0 will usually be far too harsh, so in the example on the web-site the required outcome is to “minimise” the texture pattern effect without compromising the important detail in the photo.

For our web-site example image I found I was able to set Radius = 3.5 without any significant loss of detail.

The example image is starting to “soften”, but the textured pattern has clearly diminished.

Step 3

Zooming out to have a look at the complete photo reveals that the un-desirable textured pattern has all but vanished with only minor softening of the important image detail.

Each photo you work on will have to be judged on its own merits when determining the amount of blur to apply.

But all is not lost on retaining that important image detail!!

Step 4

Remember … the Gaussian blur has been applied to the duplicate layer we created at the start of the exercise.

The original image, complete with texture, is sitting under the duplicate layer.

By using Photoshop’s Layer Blending Modes and Layer Opacity we can produce an image made up of a combination of both layers with some of the detail from the lower original layer showing through.

Again, each photo will be judged on its own merits and the setting I finalised on for our example image on the web-site may not be the same as you will find most suitable for your own images.

Try experimenting with the different blending modes and layer opacity settings.

I finally settled on a blending mode of “Luminosity” and Opacity of 85% for the Gaussian Blur layer.

Step 5

To finalise the image I then “flattened” the two layers into a single image layer by selecting Layer->Flatten Image.

Step 6

I then checked the tonal range of our combined layered image using the Levels command by selecting Image->Adjustment->Levels … and fine tuned the black, white and grey points.

Step 7

And last but not least, we can still bring a little bit more “sharpness” out of the image by finally applying a small amount of Unsharp Mask by selecting Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask …

Experimenting with the various settings, I was able to settle upon Amount = 185%; Radius = 2.5 pixels; and Threshold = 50 levels.

And there you have it … the removal of an un-desirable textured pattern without significantly sacrificing important image detail.

Customer Review: Love ma cameraa!!!
Bought this from amazon a while back and thought i would writa a little review as i am so thrilled with it. Everything is superb and it is so easy to use and the best thing is the picture quality as well as the printing is terrific. glad i bought this not only does it look extra sleek but it does the same job. Definetly would recommend to others, well done sony and many thanks to amazon another pleasent transaction.
Customer Review: Excellent little thing
bought it to replace my chunky samsung 7mpix which took AA batteries and even with high capacity NiMhs didnt last long. eventually it could hardly manage 2 flashes before draining the batteries. I didnt even give the battery a full charge for this camera and ive taken at least 50 pics with the flash and the battery indicator says full still. its really compact easily slipping into jeans pocket for a night out. at under a hundred quid its absolutely mint. the menu’s are accompanied with cool sounds (i usually turn these off but they actually sound good with this). its really well built and solid. the front is really shiny and looks very cool. the macro setting is immense for closeups. dont bother installing the software just connect to usb as if its a USBkey/pendrive and drag across the images to the pc hard disk.

Customer Review: BRILLIANT BUT FLAWED!
I own several different cameras and went for the IXUS 960 IS mainly because of excellent reviews ( I ACTUALLY PRODUCED VERY CLEAR DETAILED IMAGES ON 36″ X 36″ PRINTS FROM THE 960-THAT SOME SLR’S ONLY ASPIRE TO) and its obvious qualification for streetwise/ spontaneous use. However, had I tried ‘hands on’ before purchase I might have decided differently Why?…. For a camera of this quality, a simple design flaw such as the battery/memory chip cover coming open every time I gasp that end of the camera and slide it from my pocket, is not good enough. It’s not broken, simply there is no lock on the slider…think again canon. The Simple fix I use… put small piece of ‘Blutack’ or similar on the interior of the battery cover slider where the a/c port accessory hole is found. MINUS ONE STAR Another negative is the Titanium body. It is very slippy and exceptionally difficult to hold, especially in cold weather with dry hands. This is all compounded by the swept/fluted wedge shape of the body, opposite the controls - it’s the camera equivalent of a bar of soap. The camera strap is a necessity, not an option, if you want to keep this otherwise excellent camera away from the ground. My fix is to stick a rubber grip tape on the front of the camera body. MINUS ANOTHER STAR Buy a second battery and the largest memory chip you can afford. Canon’s supplied 32mb (YES THAT’S MB NOT GB)is an insult to any photographers intelligence. In a nutshell… Fast street-wise high definition sharpshooter you really have to get to grips with.
Customer Review: The Best Ixus by far
I was one of the first to buy a this model and have given it a thorough road test over the last few months and have to to say that I am very pleased with my decision to stick with the Ixus brand. I have owned five different models now and when I compare this 960IS with the first an Ixus V its like comparing a mini with a 5 series BMW, and in real terms it is far better value for money. I must admit, I was tempted to go for a change this time and looked hard at Panasonic and Sony products but I am so pleased I stuck with Canon. Of course there are compromises to be made and no camera is going to do everything you want it to but here you almost have it all with high MPs and high quality movie too. (I dont even bother with my camcorder anymore). The only grumbles I have are the Titananium case is very slippery and I have almost dropped it a couple of times and the smooth lines of the case dont help either. Also the the SD card supplied is such a waste of time I dont know why they bother including one.
