Panasonic - NV-GS60 - Mini DV Camcorder

Panasonic - NV-GS60 - Mini DV Camcorder
Customer Review: Panasonic NV-GS60EB Great budget camcorder
When buying this Camcorder I looked at the JVC GR-D728EK and the Sony DCR-HC27E.

I discarded the JVC as it had very poor white balance, meaning the colures it produced were not faithful to the image being shot, the tape noise was picked up by the microphone in such a way that it was very distracting when watching the recorded video, and in-doors/low light the images lost their colure definition and became very grainy with the auto focus not working particularly effectively.

When I handled the Sony and the Panasonic in store they both appeared NOT to suffer from the above foibles of the JVC. I purchased the Panasonic so I cannot comment further than on the Sony but can comment as follows on the Panasonic.

The lens on the Panasonic is a 30 X Optical zoom (which is very good for camcorder standards) with an electronic image stabilising function which does contribute to reducing camera shake but will not, understandably, eradicate it. There is a however a fitting on the base of the camera to allow you to mount it on a tripod should you wish to.

The main differentiator with the focal length on this camera in relation to the JVC & Sony above is that it has a very wide angle lens meaning that more will fit in to the shot, ideal for filming indoors where it may be hard to move far enough away from the subject matter to fit it all in or when filming scenery where you want to fit in a wider vista.

In low light the images are still very good, the auto focus is still effective and the white balance is faithful. The camera comes equipped with a low light function (activated manually) to take filming down to 2 LUX (as much light generated by 2 candles at 1 meter) giving the ability to film in near darkness.

Whilst there is a photo feature for taking stills, this simply records seven seconds of still footage on to the tape as opposed recording to a jpeg image on to a SD card, or such like, as would be done on a stills camera.

The camera has a full auto setting and also manual over rides to cover focus, exposure compensation, and pre-programmed scene (sport, snow, beach, portrait etc), white balance, backlight compensation, plus others.

I found the camera a little larger than the Sony & JVC (still very small), which for me made it more comfortable to handle, with not too many buttons and all in the right place. The Panasonic felt well made with a colour viewfinder (with dioptre) and a 2.5-inch LCD flip out screen (will swivel through 180 degrees for filming yourself etc) both are of perfectly good quality and deliver clear images.

A sturdy/stubby joystick on the rear of the camera handles navigation for the menu & play functions. I actually found this very effective in use.

You can out put the audiovisual signal by way of a DV Out (No In), Mini USB and composite jack plug (Video, Audio left & right) but there is no S-Video. There are also no DV or USB leads supplied with the camera only Jack Plug. There is also no editing software supplied for your PC.

To see a thorough over view of the product you van down load the user manual from the Panasonic web site, www.panasonic.co.uk.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this camera. It has excellent image quality and low light handling for a budget camcorder. It starts up quickly and is simple to operate as well as reproducing images faithfully. For the money I would be happy to give this product 5 stars.

Customer Review: Panasonic NV-GS60EB
Excellent little camcorder. Picture quality is superb directly to the television via the AV cable, it is easy to use and is small and light. Great value for money.

Just a shame it doesn’t come with any editing software or cable to connect to the computer.

Customer Review: Simple and great value for money
Wasnt expecting much…I now use it all the time. Easy to use, records straight onto an SD card which then plays back in reasonable quality on my TV and my Windows Media Player. Takes both still pictures and video with ease. I probably use this more than my main camcorder as I do alot of You Tube clips and post them online. This is perfect the that!!

Customer Review: Superb Value
As an entry-level customer I wanted the best I could get for under ?300. First I bought a Sony HandyCam Hard Disk version. However the picture quality was appalling so I sent it back. I bought one of these instead and the difference couldn’t be more profound. The 3CCD technology gives really lucid colours and very sharp detail. OK, if the light is failing the image will deteriorate quite quickly but on the whole for daytime use, including indoors in well lit rooms it is superb value.
Customer Review: Brilliant Performance !
trawling looking for a replacement. It came down to this panasonic and a sony model (dcr hc 47) The sony was a far sexier piece of kit, looks wise, but performance didn’t measure up to the panasonic. The panasonic has a very good optical image stabiliser (not electronic like sony) which is important since camera shake on these small camcorders can be a problem. It also interfaces very smoothly via firewire with my existing editing software (ulead video studio 10 plus) It also helps that I already had a spare SD card from my digital stills camera whereas the sony takes a MMC card. The pictures from the panasonic are excellent - video image is superb and even the still pictures are OK. The zoom is a bit measly (x10) but the digital zoom up to x25 is actually very good. The usability of the camera is also very good-menus are well laid out and easily navigated via a mini joystick and the instruction manual is straightforward. The buttons are all easily reached although I wouldn’t want my hands to be much smaller as the zoom slider does sit quite high up. It offers a very easy point and shoot experience and has enough manual functions to keep a ‘fiddler’ like me happy. The downsides-It is not pretty (very well finished and well laid out)but no looker. You will not get envious glances from other parents when filming the school nativity play but if you rate performance over show-off appeal this is a great

MD101 CAMCORDER 30X OPT.ZOOM 2.7 LCD UK
Amazon Price: ?132.00
Customer Review: Great for amateur film makers or ordinary home use
I have used this camera for just over a month now, and it has proved to be a versatile camcorder for various tasks. Out of the box it does what you’d expect it to, it records in the more modern standard of 16:9 (widescreen), however this can be easily switched to the older 4:3 option. The picture quality is far better than older mini dv camcorders I have owned in the past, and doesn’t look bad on large High definition tv’s as some camcorders can now look blurry on them not using a high def format. The sound on the built in microphone is average. It’s fine for noisy atmospheres but in normal and quieter places camera noises like the tape mechanism are clearly heard. Unlike many cheaper camcorders, Canon have provided a 3.5mm jack microphone plug, one of the most useful things they could have included. This opens the option up to using a boom microphone or clip (lapel) microphone. This of course cuts out the camcorder noises, providing a much more professional appearing video. The camcorder lacks a camera shoe however for adding a clip on boom microphone, meaning you will need other means of holding your microphone. This camera has various clever little features like the built in lense cover that can be slid up and down without having to have a separate lense cap which often go missing. The joystick used to navigate the menus on screen is easy to use, and the menu screens themselves are clean and simple to use. The more automatic “P” mode and the “M” manual mode have been replaced with an “Easy” mode and more manual like “P” mode. These modes work well but it would have been nice to see a dedicated manual mode as well. The 30x optical zoom is acceptable by today’s standards and works well, however rival models often have more zoom, but without a tripod you wouldn’t want to be using all the zoom avaliable. The camera is light weight but with a good balance, and has a very slick appearance. Canon’s “DIGIC DV” technology appears to help these single CCD camcorders to make colours more vibrant. The camcorder has the standard AV and firewire connections, and of course the tripod screw connection at the bottom of the camcorder. Battery power on this camcorder is usually over an hour to an hour and a half. A spare battery is something I’d recommend to have, these can be obtained in most shops or cheaply on-line. The screen is large enough at 2.7inches and is visible in daylight, however for situations where screen glare my be a problem, the colour screen view finder is very useful. Overall this camcorder is a good all rounder, the microphone input been a key feature, along with other innovative features. The built in microphone is average/poor and a separate microphone should be used when ever possible. Hope this has helped you, Dale.
Customer Review: Might be a dodgy batch
Read the earlier reviews about problems with hearing the motor whirr whilst using the built in microphone. Fore armed I tried using 3 different mikes as a test before recording my only public presentation in five years, but when I plugged in the mike, no sound was recorded at all. Spoke to Canon who said to send it back, and Amazon were very good and immediately replaced it on the day before the presentation. Unfortunately plugging in a mike stopped this one recording too. Checked the manual again (just plug in mike and go) but it should have worked. Had to record the talk with a buzzing motor and this one is going back as well. Good picture, easy to use - poor sound no matter what I tried.

Travel and Scenic Photography

Travel and Scenic Photography 101

When you’re driving through the mountains somewhere, and you notice a car parked half off the road and some guy leaning to the left to avoid a branch with his Rebel 2000 camera in the act of focusing, you’ve met me. I do this because, to me, a trip isn’t fulfilling unless I’ve preserved that beauty for posterity. I’d like to share some of the techniques that make scenic photography such a wonderful artform - simple, yet elegant.

First off, equipment. As much as the cheapo disposable camera beckons, get real. These cameras have fisheye lenses which I call “spam” lenses. They cram everything in, with equal blurriness and boringness. Good photos are sharp, unless you use blur for artistic effect. Sharp comes from an adjustable lens. It can be a fixed lens or a zoom, but it must focus specially for each picture. Fixed lenses are limiting for scenic pictures, where to frame the shot you may need to move long distances. Imagine using a fixed lens on the Washington Monument, when you’re half a block away! Zooms get my vote, even though they often don’t have as wide an aperture, which limits their capabilities in low light situations.

Practically speaking, an SLR is the absolute best. They are lightweight, and can be used with top quality lenses. Film SLRs tend to be less expensive, but have the limitations of film, meaning you have to get it developed and so forth. Digital SLRs are VERY expensive, so for the budget conscious either go with a film SLR or a high quality basic digital camera. With digital, resolution is also a critical factor, so look at the specs before you buy.

OK, we’ve got the camera, emotions are running high, and that’s great, but not too great! Sometimes I find a spot that is so wonderful, I start shooting like a madman, only to be disappointed by the pictures. What happened? Emotions. When you experience a place, there are sounds, aromas and breezes as well as the visuals of the spot. Needless to say, you can’t photograph all of these elements, only the visual. When overwhelmed by the spectacle of a scenic hotspot, we are often overwhelmed by all of these elements.

So what to do? Look through your camera. The viewfinder does not lie (usually). Try to see what you are looking at as the finished picture. Most people perfunctorily take pictures, hoping that somehow the shot will come out great. If you wonder how the pictures came out when you are on the way to the drug store to get them, you’re doing something wrong. At the moment you click the pic, you should know exactly what you will get. (Of course with digital, that’s not a trick!).

Now, I was a tad dishonest in saying that you can’t capture all of the elements of a scene. You can hint at them. For starters, motion. Yes, even in a still picture, there is motion. Something happened before, during and after your picture. In a mountain vista scene, you may find something that hints at motion, whether it be a branch of a tree that has been swaying in the breeze, or a river flowing through the valley below. These add a sense of motion.

Then there’s the “rule of thirds.” When you place the main object of the picture smack-dab in the middle, it is static and boring. Place it one third of the way from either side, and you IMPLY motion. Put the horizon in a landscape photo a third of the way up or down, not across the middle.

Remember, when a person looks at a picture, their eyes move. You want to frame your photo to help that movement. If you can find some lines in the scene, such as a skyline, cloud formation, path through the forest, etcetera, use it interestingly, and with the rule of thirds to draw your viewer’s eyes into the picture.

Avoid “summit syndrome.” You get to the top of Mount Washington and shoot the majestic vista. Great. The pictures come out … boring! How? No PERSPECTIVE. Big vistas will be flat unless you have an object in the foreground, such as a rock or a tree, to give them perspective. Then the eye really grasps how big this scene is. People enjoying the view is a real winner, because the viewer may identify with their emotions, giving the image real impact.

Cheese! Yes, you do have to take the family photos. It’s obligatory. But when you do, make sure that they show the LOCATION of the photo. Otherwise, you might as well do it on your driveway. Frame the scene in context, with landmarks as part of the picture. Find a way to tell as story in the picture, such as little Sara climbing up the rocks by the waterfall.

Finally, any element in the picture that hints at more senses than just the visual will make it remarkable. Actor headshots for example, tell a story about the subject. You can almost hear them saying their next lines. If you photograph a garden, the viewer may experience the aroma of the flowers. A tourist street with an accordion player on the corner may have your amazed friends whistling “Dixie.”

In summation, picture taking on travel is recording the experience in a satisfying way. Use motion, perspective, sensory, storytelling and so forth, to bring your photos to life. Oh, and needless to say, make your job easy and go to great places! See you at the overlook!

Customer Review: Nice camera, good pictures, but confusing menu system…
We’ve had this camera for about a week and overall we’re very pleased with it. There are no problems connecting it to our iMac using iPhoto (good as there’s no software for Macs supplied with the camera) and the pictures it takes are very, VERY good… But… And there’s always a but! The menu system is SO frustrating… You’d really have thought that having a touch screen would have meant a simplified menu system which was easy and intuitive to use, but it’s really not. Some of the icons are just plain obscure and some of the features seem buried deep within the menu system accessible only after reading through the manual. The touch screen itself isn’t particularly good either, you really have to PRESS it to get it to react. It’s certainly not able to accept a light touch like my iPhone does, this suggests to me that it’ll wear out fairly quickly but obviously as I’ve only had it a week this is just speculation! …Yet you’ll notice after the above mini-rant I’ve still awarded four stars. The confusing menu system is only confusing until you’ve learnt it after then and being a pocket camera, you’ll probably never need to go traipsing through it again. After all you’re not buying a professional SLR or anything and for a pocket camera it really is fantastic quality much better than my Fujifilm E550. So all in all, great camera, great looking camera too! But I’d try and use one before you buy it, unless you particularly enjoy reading manuals!

Customer Review: Fantastic!
This is a fantastic camera! At first I was concerned about the price, but it does compare favourably with the competition, especially when size is an issue. I took it skiing, and all I can say is that it is surprisingly robust! The effects/fades/sounds are really good, and there is not much else I could ask for really. Editing is simple - select the scenes, and fades, and after effects, and it does the editing to vhs for you. Download the video via firewire, and editing possibilities are only limited by your software. Probably the only extra that I would want is an audio in, so that an external mic can be used, or so that I can record CD audio on to the second audio channel after initially recording a scene. Consider whether you want to get the DVP3 with digital in - a 60 minute tape takes 14Gb of data - so storing it on your pc after editing is not very practical. Alternatively, just record your scenes to DVD! Battery life is just over an hour, but for around 70 quid you can get an 8 hour battery. Saying that, an hour is fine - even for whole a night out since you only really want short clips. Tapes are not cheap - minimum a fiver for an hour long tape.
Customer Review: JVC-DVP3 - A joy to use…
Not having a professional view of the camcorder world, I can confirm that this little gem is for the stuff amateur users will find a treat. The lightweight, simple to use camcorder has all the features you need, with the extended info shoe allowing a light / flash / external mic etc to be fitted. The memory card is a nice addition that my previous JVC DVM5 did not have. One touch thumb control is easy to use after a couple of minutes getting use to it. Have yet to use the E-mail clip record function, but the other functions are pretty much self explanitory and neat. Another improvement to my previous JVC is the displayed menu system having a nice user friendly feel about it. JVC have taken a lot of critical points and eliminated them from this camcorder. Looking for a digital camcorder for the family and general use. This is the baby !……

Customer Review: Good Quality And Simple To Use
I purchased this camera as a present for my dad. He has never used a digital camera before as all things that require the use of a computer tend to make him a little bit wary. It has turned out to be the best present I have got him in ages, possibly the best one ever! The major benefits to someone looking for an ‘easy to use’ camera are featured in this smart little model. Firstly, it runs on ordinary batteries - something which appeals to older people, like my dad, who don’t even own a mobile phone. Secondly, it has a decent size LCD and by using the handy Help Text anyone could manage to zoom in and out of a picture in order to assess whether it had achieved what was desired. Another major benefit is that the actual quality of the pictures are truly excellent. As the owner of a EOS 400D SLR, I still found the picture quality of this little camera were of a very high standard. In fact, I liked it so much I am considering getting another one for me - for those times when you want a small ‘pocket-sized’ camera with you. The instruction guide clearly guides even the most inexperienced person through all of the functions available, of which there are many. To put it into perspective - when my dad had tried my SLR he had barely touched anything, with instructions being told to him, in five minutes. In the case of this little camera, however, he had sussed out the batteries, the memory card, taken five photos, and taken a little video clip around the room, all in the time it took for my nan to make a cup of tea! Overall, I have to say this camera may be compact, but it is jam-packed with everything it could possibly need, whilst maintaining its position as the most easiest to use model currently available.
Customer Review: Quick Reviews!
Having had limited experience of digital cameras, and a trip to Paris on the horizon, i wanted to buy a reasonably priced, easy to use camera. I looked on Amazon and read a few reviews, and the A610 seemed like a fair bet. I already knew that Fujifilm were a reliable company, and was sold on the high Mega-Pixel count and Optical Zoom. The first thing you will notice is the generous size of the screen. The design is sleek, and the camera is the perfect size for carrying. Switch it on, and you will see how easy it is to use. The menu is simple to navigate, with many pic-taking options- manual settings, settings for every season, for night and day, and even more specific types such as Fireworks and Flowers. There is also a movie option, though no sound on playback. The picture quality is sharp, with vibrant colours and looks almost as impressive as a camera three times the price of this one. The zoom is probably average, I could take many pictures of buildings in the distance from the top of Notre Dame which look great. My only niggles are that some of the night-time pictures have a tendancy to blur slightly, usually when there is light interference, and that for some reason my instruction booklet was entirely in French. An ideal first digital camera- easy to use, plenty of features, great quality pictures.

It?s now even possible to take great photos in low-light conditions: The FE-250 is the first in its series to incorporate Olympus? own BrightCapture Technology. And naturally, as with all cameras in the FE range, it is incredibly easy to use With an 8.0 Megapixel CCD, the FE-250 produces crystal-clear pictures and delivers the power to print large, high-resolution photos. The 3x zoom lens gives photographers all the range they need to capture a wide variety of subjects from landscapes to portraits and close ups. Yet despite featuring a whopping 6.4cm LCD screen with 230,000 pixels, this stylish, metal-bodied camera is still small enough to be easily taken anywhere. With its ?one button, one function? design principle the FE-250 is remarkably easy to operate. Choices of 15 scene modes guarantee great results in many often experienced situations. This camera also features eight shooting programmes and a convenient mode dial makes choosing between them simplicity itself. Programmes include Movie recording with sound as well as Image Stabilisation, which employs BrightCapture Technology to avoid blurred photos by boosting the ISO value to 10,000 (in 3.0 million pixel mode). By selecting modes such as Candle or Indoor, the special mood and atmosphere of night-time settings can by faithfully captured as the need to use the flash is also significantly reduced.
