Lowepro Apex 100AW Shoulder Bag For Digital Cameras/Camcorders - Black?

Lowepro Apex 100AW Shoulder Bag For Digital Cameras/Camcorders - Black?
Customer Review: Quality
Usual top quality camera bag from LowePro. Everything works perfectly, with smooth running zips and thoughtful little design touches like the microfibre cleaning cloth and memory card pouch. My Panasonic FZ18 fits perfectly inside and I know it will be totally protected.

Customer Review: Excellent quality and value for money
I chose this bag because Sony chose not to supply protection for a DCR-SR72 HDD Handycam I recently purchased. I ordered this bag from Amazon and when it arrived I was pleased to find that my camcorder fitted perfectly into it. This item is excellent quality and value for money!

Customer Review: Great little camcorder
After reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried about how the images and focus would be indoors, but I shouldn’t have worried. Unless you are some sort of home video anorak who’s hyper critical about everything, you’ll love this camcorder. I was shooting and watching on the tele in a few minutes. There may be better cameras around for the price, but for portability and ease of use this is unbeatable. If I’m being critical the only things I don’t like is the slight wobble on the battery fixing and I don’t find the viewing screen easy to open. Also I don’t know if Amazon made a mistake but it was listed at well under ?300 when I bought it. :)
Customer Review: Nice camera - shame about the software
I have no problem with the camera. Easy to use, picture quality is fine for my purposes. But what’s the point in having a good camera when it comes with out-of-date CyberLink editing software which is not, in my opinion, user friendly? According to the manual, the pictures can only be used with the software provided (can’t even use Windows Movie Maker) which is dissapointing

Customer Review: Brill Camcorder but BEWARE
I Recived this Camcorder for xmas and it looked good and i was more or less pocketsize, but when i had charged it up.Xmas was ruined. I could not record because sony hadn’t been boverd to put a tape in the box. But aprt from that it’s a greate camcorder so i am still going to give it 5 stars

Customer Review: good value for money
i’m not going to say this camcorder doesn’t have amazing quality or features because for this price you won’t find a much better camera, and i agree with most the positive reviews, so im just going to point out the problems with it.

-the camcorder grip of the battery is flimsy and the battery taps the camcorder while recording if you move a lot or touch it with your fingers

-the battery is also neither the 14 or 6 hour one (whichare both v expensive), it only lasts about 90 mins.

-there is no cable to connect it to a computer, i was very annoyed with this because nobody uses vhs tapes anymore it should have been included, it was also a hassle trying to find the right one.

-i wasn’t expecting tapes, but just to warn people, it doesn’t come with any, so get some if you wanna record christmas or something.

-the tape mechanism is quite loud for a camcorder so if your filming very quite scenes it can be a problem.

but apart from that i recommend this camera. there are other things, like night mode is not excellent, but that’s not really a problem because similiar cameras also have similiar night vision quality, if you want it better you need to buy a more expensive camera.

also i didn’t really ’spend’ money on the needed accessories because i saved more buying this camera online, so if you get them altogether you will save on p&p too.

PS i have only had this camera for a few days so i can’t comment on durabiliy and there may be more faults but so far it’s been good and i hope it doesn’t break or anything.

Used Price: ?125.00
Customer Review: Do not buy JVC products - your wasting your money
We purchased this unit in summer 2006 from Amazon, no problems there. The reason for this purchase was because our previous JVC unit GR-D70EK(at that time was only 2 years old) developed a major fault and was unuseable. Put it down to hard labour it endured from us and we were about to go on holiday and needed a working camcorder, so we bought a new one. Big mistake buying JVC again. The Pro’s This camcorder is great for filming and taking pictures (it could do with higher mega pixels to be honest) but we got we paid for and this camcorder did everything we wanted. Its lightweight dinky and nice to look at. The Zoom is great and sound quality very good. The Con’s No matter what we do you can not download the footage or pictures onto our pc which was the primary reason for us buying this camcorder. Firstly a fire wire is not supplied with the camera and the instructions are very cagey about pointing this out. Once purchased and installed, we followed the instructions carefully and began our first editing session with no apparant problems. Until we decided to the carry out further editing sessions and our pc would not recognise the camcorder. Ran diagnostics test on pc, no problems, purchased another fire wire in case that was damaged, nothing. So we looked on JVC technical website to get some advice and found that there was a product recall on our first camcorder beacuse of the major fault we had already experienced. We reported this to JVC and they agreed to repair the first camcorder. We mentioned the problems editing with the newer camcorder and they agreed to investigate this also. Both cameras were sent away for inspection and repair. We received both back and whilst the older camcorders major fault has been rectified and we could use the unit again, the newer camera still did not respond to the DV fire wire. The moral of the story don’t do what we did and purchase two camcorders from JVC. Do your research on user forums. We didn’t when we purchased these units and came unstuck. Looked on leading traders websites to see the going rate for these used camcorders, they are not selling. They can not be given away. We have lost over ?600. Not happy
Customer Review: A delight to use
When my Sony Camcorder ended its life I thought it would be difficult to replace and yet at half the price this item proves to be a more than adequate replacement and it’s half the size and weight too. The manual for any camcorder is frightening - so much complex detail - will I ever learn? No bother with this camcorder - just switch to auto and nothing could be simpler to use and get great results from. Before ending up with this item I bought a Canon model which was about ?[...] dearer. I returned this unit since the picture quality was awful and at that stage I thought that might be the best the mini-DV format could provide. No way - this JVC Camcorder gives excellent quality and it quickly adapts to changing lighting conditions. Flicking away from “Auto” to “Manual” there are a wide variety of features you can use to get top quality shots in more difficult circumstances. Taking them one at a time they are easy enough to master. Ths snapshot feature is a bit disappointing since it does not operate in the 16:9 format mode. Surely everyone has a widescreen TV these days. My only other criticism is the cost of replacement batteries - close to ?[...] - a bit of a rip off I think. I tried a supposedly replacement battery at a much cheaper price off Ebay - it looked the same but kept coming up with the message “communication error” when used. It had to go back. The battery supplied gives about 75 minutes of use and recharges in about 90 minutes so it is not too much of a problem not having a spare. I used Pinnacle software to download, edit and produce DVD discs in formats to suit PC and DV player. Great results were achieved with very little bother and I am no computer wiz kid. This unit may not suit the pro but for mere mortals, like me, it is about as good as I want and I am called a “Grumpy Old Man” by my darling wife.

Removing Spot Scratches

Removing Spot Scratches in Your Treasured Photos - 5 Minute Digital Fix

Probably one of the most common problems you will be faced with in doing any type of digital photo restoration work will be to do with spot scratches on your old photos.

When we first look at those old black and white or early colour photos they often have small scratch marks and spots on them from being stored incorrectly.

These small spot scratches are easily perceived by your eye when you are looking at the photo, detracting from the overall subject matter.

Here is a very easy quick fix using Adobe Photoshop’s History Brush tool.

Our example “before” image on our web-site has numerous small spot scratches on the old sepia toned photograph.

The basic removal method described here can quickly and effortlessly bring those scratched photos back to (almost) their former glory using the History Brush Tool found in Photoshop.

This basic technique works extremely well for those types of images that have spot scratches in areas of the photo that do not contain a lot of detail.

As you can see in our example image on the web-site, the spots tend to be primarily on the background of the photo, making it ideal for this correction method.

Step - 1

Having opened up the image in Photoshop we will first apply the Dust and Scratches filter by selecting Filter->Noise->Dust & Scratches …

Set the Threshold to between 1 and 4 (I generally start with 1) and then increase the Radius until you see the spot scratches disappear.

Our example image on the web-site finally made the largest spot scratch on the left hand side of the photo disappear at a Threshold of 3 and Radius of 10.

All well and good but our image is now totally blurred!! Not really what we wanted to see is it?

This is where the History Brush tool comes into play.

Step - 2

Open up the History Palette by selecting Window->History if you cannot see the window already open.

We are going to create a “Snapshot” of the current state of the image in question by clicking on what looks like a little image of a camera at the bottom of the History Palette window (see the red arrow on the web-site image).

After clicking you will notice that the History Palette now shows an extra image icon called “Snapshot 1″.

This is a snapshot of the image that includes the effect of apply the Dust & Scratches Filter in Step 1.

Now click on the little square box to the left of Snapshot 1.

You will see a little “brush” icon appear which is now telling us that the “Snapshot 1″ image will be used as our “source” when we paint with the History Brush.

Remember … this snapshot image actually has none of the spot scratches on it because we made them disappear by applying the Dust & Scratches filter in Step 1.

Step - 3

Make the original (un-touched) history snapshot active by clicking on it (in the case of our example image this is “Restore-Before-Image.jpg”).

Select the History Brush from the main toolbar (this has the same icon as the little “brush” icon that appeared in the History Palette window).

We are now ready to “paint away” those spot scratches!!

Step - 4

I’m going to zoom in on the largest scratch on the left hand side of the photo to show you how we use the History Brush.

We selected the History Brush in Step 3.

Select an appropriate brush size and soft edges.

We now need to decide how to apply the brush to the scratches in question.

You will notice that the scratches in our example image are “lighter” than the surrounding image.

Step - 5

We need to paint “darker” pixels and as such we set the History Brush Mode: to “Darken” (Top Menu Bar option when you have the History Brush as the active tool).

This has the effect of “telling the History Brush” to only replace pixels on the original image with pixels from our snapshot if the snapshot pixel is darker.

Start to paint over the scratches and see what happens.

The scratches start to miraculously disappear as you paint over them.

They are being replaced with the underlying snapshot image pixels you created in Step 1.

The benefit of using this techniques is that you have complete control over which parts of the original image you “paint over” so as not to blur important details of the image had you just applied a Dust & Scratches filter to the whole image.

Now what if your scratches are darker than the surrounding image, I hear you ask?

Easy!! … just use a History Brush Mode: of “Lighten” instead of “Darken”.

You can experiment with all of the History Brush options - Mode, Opacity and Flow until you get the desired result.

The resulting “After” image has had all of the spot scratches removed easily without compromising on the photographic detail of the image.

And there you have it!!Less than five minutes of digital image manipulation to remove those unwanted spot scratches.

If you find the steps taking are a little hard to understand in this text based article, you can click on the link at the end of this article to see the same method explained on our website with the aid of example graphical images.

So your an amateur photographer, and need a reasonably price bag that going to make you “look good?, and take better pictures… perhaps not!The dude bag (can be a dudette bag as well.. hence the pink colour!)is the perfect entry level photo bag for digital cameras on the market. So who needs a big bag anyway that?s going to take up serious luggage space on your holiday, to fit all the paraphernalia that you don?t really need! So keep it small and compact, get rid of the tag along nonsense that just gets in the way. Clip it onto your belt buckle so it does not even get classed as hand luggage when you check in for that long awaited holiday!

Optimize Your Photos for the Web

Optimize Your Photos for the Web

It doesn’t matter if your emailing photos of your grandson or putting images of your latest product on your online store. Too many people don’t consider optimizing their photos for the web. We’ve all been on too many web pages where it seemed that the photos would never load, and sometimes they didn’t. So here are some steps to make sure that your photos show up on your site.

1. Always have a back up original format copy of your image. Never alter the original. Believe me you will regret it.

2. Crop to size. Make sure that you crop out any extra information that isn’t needed. Remember the larger the photo the longer it takes to load or send.

3. Resize to reduce pixels. There should be an option to resize according to pixels. You’re going to want the largest size to be no more than 250 pixels or you can reduce the dpi to no more than 96.

4.Reduce the color palette. Many images have millions of colors so the first thing that you need to do is reduce the colors to 256. You will lose some depth with this.

5. Save the file in a standard format. JPEG is the most common for photos and you can compress the image with a JPEG for further reduction in file size. It’s not unusual to see GIF or PNG as well.

Remember that with a 56k connection a 150k file will take 20 seconds to load. If you’re creating a web page every photo that you add will add to the time it takes to download all of the images. If you keep the images small in size the smaller resolution will not be as obvious.

Customer Review: pathetic
I rang this retailer up abou this product and the staff were very un professional and also hung up on me as they were unable to answer my comments i would recommend NOT to buy any products from this supplier as if this is the way they treat customers before they buy god help us if we folk out money then this behaviour occurs.
Customer Review: Good except for delay in taking pictures
Have had our camera for a couple of years now. Originally bought it because I had a Canon film SLR and it had the same functions on it (it can be used either as an automatic or manual). So in that respect it has been easy to get to know and use. Pictures are OK, but err towards the “snappy” side even on manual mode. My biggest gripe however, is that there is a delay of up to several seconds between pressing the button and it taking the photo. In many circumstances this isn’t a problem, but when you’re trying to take a photo of a fidgetty toddler, you miss it every time, and half the time they aren’t even in the frame by the time the camera has actually taken the image. For me, this makes the camera pretty useless but if you want to use it for less spontaneous shots, then it is OK.

Customer Review: great camera but developes common fault
Had camera for 18 months, great camera, excellent photos. However it was only used occasionally for family occasions, holidays etc. It developed a fault, the lens stuck out and E18 error appeared on the screen when on holiday. I expected better quality from a Canon, especiaccy when I paid the extra money to purchase a reputable brand.
Customer Review: Excellent Little Family Camera!
I bought this camera around 2 years ago. I am not an amature photographer and I find this camera a cut above most digital cameras in the same price range. I also had to rely on the flip screen on numerous occasions due to being very short. I would recommend this camera to the average person who wishes to photograph good subjects without a fuss!

Sony DCR-HC27 Handycam Mini DV Camcorder

Sony DCR-HC27 Handycam Mini DV Camcorder
MINIDV CARL ZEISS 2.5 LCD INA 20X OPT. ZM 800X DIG. ZM NS

Customer Review: Sony DCR-HC27… Top Quality…
I am going away in October 07 for 3 Weeks to Thailand, I am sick of looking at “Still Image photos” so I decided to get a New Digital Video Camcorder, I have looked at various models “Samsung, Jvc, Hitachi, plus more” but the Sony DCR-HC27 sounded the best one plus the reviews on Amazon really helped me to choose the right product for me.

When the Package came it was a big box because I orderd other thing’s with it, a Spare Battery FH-50 it’s not as strong as the Battery which comes with the Camera (FH-70) but great to have as a Stand by Battery if the other runs out of Charge, it comes with a Charger to plug into the Camera to charge the Battery. I also orderd the Bag which you can buy together with this Item at the moment on Amazon’s page, the Bag is fantastic I can fit everything inside it.

The camera is really small and very comfortable in the hand. I’m sure this will take some great Video Shots of my Holiday to Thailand,

Thank you Amazon & Reviewers for helping me choose the right product

Fantastic Camcorder… Buy one, Plus AMAZON is the cheapest place for a Brand New one :)

Customer Review: Great value easy to use gadget
It has been many years since we bought our previous and only camcorder, a JVC S-VHS device which got little use, and today looks frankly embarassing! So when looking around for a replacement I had no idea which “flavour” to go for DV/DVD/HD etc but after reading a few forums, I ended up deciding to go for the tried and tested DV format - I have to say first impressions are great….easy to set up and connected with my mac and imovie first time, having read other reviews I made sure before buying, that I already had the right firewire cable, as you only get the AV variety in the box.

The colour and sharpness of the image is impressive for such a “low end” model and all in all, for ?150, I think it would be difficult to find a better camera!

Customer Review: V good stylish camera but wait a minute….
Well…

Good camera I would recommend it. but dont be fooled into thinking it comes with a USB cable or a way of connecting it to a PC cause it doesnt. You can connect it to the tv with the AV cable but pc connection is classed as accessory.

so after spending ?189 on the camera, taps, bag ive not gotta splash more out on a firewire cable and/or USB cable. nice one amazon thought you could have at least included it for free!

Mini DV format.

Customer Review: Good, basic camera
This is a good, basic camera for the price. The picture quality is not superb, but it is not bad as well. The 34x zoom is powerful and does it’s job well. You will have to buy a firewire cable for it. I made the mistake of buying it from Jessops for ?14. I later realized that one could buy it on Amazon for somewhere around ?5. It is a basic camera. For now the Sony DCR-HC27 is on special for ?124 with Amazon and friends that have bought it say that it is excellent. Sony is a leading Japanese brand while Samsung is a Korean brand and not really at the top of the electronics market. I I had to buy a camcorder again I would go for the Sony.
Customer Review: Low Quality Camcorder
I bought the Camcorder from Amazon because I previously had a Hi8 Samsung camcorder, which died. The functionalities of this DV version is very basic and it is made from cheap plastic. It feels like it is going to break anytime soon. I tried it for 10mins and sent it back and I bought the DCR-HC27 sony dv camcorder from Amazon which is excellent. You get what you pay for, u decide. And it did not come with firewire cable or editing software

Customer Review: Sanyo Xacti CG65
I bought one of these on amazon pre christmas.Great little camera. It is remarkably compact and fits in a suit or jacket pocket without being noticed. That feature is good if you are carrying a phone and other gadgets. The second thing I noticed was it was lightweight and had a real quality feel about it. Flip out screen is a nice size and picture quality is good. Video quality was found to be very satisfactory as was the 6m pixel still camera. Handy zoom lens. It is intuitive to operate so users will not need to spend much time on the chunky manual. I bought a 2 gig card which gives me more or less 2 hours of video. I am not likely to need a larger card before downloading. Comes with usb and tv leads plus sep charger. Lens cap was included and a pouch. Would have liked to have seen a Sanyo leather case with the package. Camera looks very neat in black. I am very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend it to readers.
Customer Review: Great little concept .
I went for this camcorder after much hesitation. It’s both a camcorder and a 6 megapixel still camera with a flash. Surprisingly, it managed both well. Build: Head turner. Miniscule size & pocket friendly. Feels well made, the LCD screen has a confident, precise spring action. The lens is a few millimeters deep to the body surface which keeps it safe and clean. Contrary to other reviews I read; I had no problems keeping it still (even though I’m left handed). Decent quality LCD. Starts up in 2 seconds! Stills: OK for a 6 MPX camera, slightly pixilated. Flash range is up to 1.7 meters. Impressive macro, clear down to 1 cm. Video: equivalent to any standard definition digital camcorder with any other media (HDD, mini DV). Uses MPEG-4 compression. Becomes grainy in low indoor light with auto focus struggling as well. Battery: claimed 70 minutes, less in practice (never timed it though). Has a standalone charger which I don’t use as you can charge through the mini-USB port from your PC, car lighter or mains adapter. Storage: SD or SDHC cards. You get 40 minutes / GB at the highest video setting. Can take up to an 8 GB SDHC card (thats 5.5 hours). Software: basic ULead software. Other functions: Doubles as a web cam. AV output to TV. Can capture your desktop (I found no use for this). Voice recording. Simple yet functional menu. Overall: Great hybrid camera/camcorder for the home user with a greater price tag.

Getting Your Photos Ready for Sharing

Getting Your Photos Ready for Sharing

One of the main reasons people buy digital cameras is so they can share their photos with others. Even if you are just going to print your photos for yourself, you will want them to look their best. Here are some tips on getting your images ready for sharing or printing.

1. ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS

Delete the ones you don’t like or those that are near duplicates of others. No sense in clogging up your hard drive or CDs with junk. Use a good photo management software program like ACDSEE 7, Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 5 to view, organize and name your images. These programs also let you batch rename so you can give more descriptive file names to a group of photos at the same time. You can add key words and tags to make finding your photos easier. Be detailed in your photo descriptions, not just “John and Laurie.” You’ll probably have hundreds of photos of your kids and it will be harder to find the one you’re looking for. Better to say “John and Laurie waterskiing on Lake Powell, May 2004.”

2. BACK UP YOUR ORIGINALS

Mistakes can happen. It is a good idea to back up all your images to a CD before you start editing or changing them. That way you always have the original to go back to if you accidentally save over an image or made changes to a photo that you later decide you don’t like. CDs hold lots of photos, making it cheap insurance.

3. ROTATE IMAGES

Trying to look at a sideways photo is annoying. Use your photo management or editing software to rotate photos as needed. And if you have any images that are a little crooked, you can fix that using your editing software. Most photo editors have an automatic “straighten” function, or you can manually rotate the image a few degrees to straighten the horizon line.

4. REMOVE RED-EYE

Even with your digital camera’s auto red-eye reduction function, your subject’s eyes may still have red-eye. Use your photo editing software to remove it. Zoom in on the eyes and it will be easier for you to correct the red-eye. I’ve tried a number of red-eye correction tools and find that the one that comes with ACDSEE 7’s photo editor is among the best. It zeros in just on the red eye and doesn’t darken the surrounding eye area like some other software does.

5. CROP YOUR PHOTOS

Crop out unnecessary or distracting backgrounds and focus in on your subject. Most photo editing programs will keep the aspect ratio, so when you draw a box around the area you want to focus on it will crop it as 4×6 or whatever you have specified. That way you won’t end up with an odd size photo. Kodak EasyShare Gallery also has a very good cropping tool for maintaining the proper print size. It comes with its free photo editor.

6. ADJUST LIGHTING AND CONTRAST

Some of your photos may have come out washed out or too dark. You can automatically adjust the color, brightness and contrast of your photos. The better programs like Photoshop Album 2.0, Jasc and ACDSEE also have tools for making manual adjustments for fine-tuning. Be careful not to overdo it, though, or your picture could come out grainy.

7. PREPARE TO SHARE

There are a number of ways to share your images. Several programs, like Roxio Photo Suite 7, ACDSEE7, Photoshop Album and Paint Shop Photo Album allow you to create digital photo albums or slide shows, complete with music, transitions and captions. You can burn them to CD or resize and optimize for emailing directly from the program.

Online photo services such as PhotoWorks, Shutterfly, Snapfish and Kodak EasyShare Gallery also let you share your photos on line, for free. You simply upload your images to their server into your own photo albums and add captions if you wish. Then email your friends with a link to your albums. With most of the online services your photos stay on their servers as long as you have an account with them, for free. Signing up for an account is free, you only pay for photos you choose to purchase.

For hardcore photo sharers, there are also dedicated photo sharing applications such as PiXPO v1.5.0, which lets you share photos right off your hard drive. This is a peer to peer software application that allows you to connect directly with your friends and family to share and view pictures online with no uploads. Unlike traditional photo sharing services, you have unlimited storage and you don’t have to upload your photos to a distant server or wait for friends to log onto some photo sharing site. The application is easy to install and use and it’s inexpensive, around $30. PC Magazine rated it an Editor’s Choice in their January 3, 2005 issue.

Travel and Scenic Photography

Travel and Scenic Photography 101

When you’re driving through the mountains somewhere, and you notice a car parked half off the road and some guy leaning to the left to avoid a branch with his Rebel 2000 camera in the act of focusing, you’ve met me. I do this because, to me, a trip isn’t fulfilling unless I’ve preserved that beauty for posterity. I’d like to share some of the techniques that make scenic photography such a wonderful artform - simple, yet elegant.

First off, equipment. As much as the cheapo disposable camera beckons, get real. These cameras have fisheye lenses which I call “spam” lenses. They cram everything in, with equal blurriness and boringness. Good photos are sharp, unless you use blur for artistic effect. Sharp comes from an adjustable lens. It can be a fixed lens or a zoom, but it must focus specially for each picture. Fixed lenses are limiting for scenic pictures, where to frame the shot you may need to move long distances. Imagine using a fixed lens on the Washington Monument, when you’re half a block away! Zooms get my vote, even though they often don’t have as wide an aperture, which limits their capabilities in low light situations.

Practically speaking, an SLR is the absolute best. They are lightweight, and can be used with top quality lenses. Film SLRs tend to be less expensive, but have the limitations of film, meaning you have to get it developed and so forth. Digital SLRs are VERY expensive, so for the budget conscious either go with a film SLR or a high quality basic digital camera. With digital, resolution is also a critical factor, so look at the specs before you buy.

OK, we’ve got the camera, emotions are running high, and that’s great, but not too great! Sometimes I find a spot that is so wonderful, I start shooting like a madman, only to be disappointed by the pictures. What happened? Emotions. When you experience a place, there are sounds, aromas and breezes as well as the visuals of the spot. Needless to say, you can’t photograph all of these elements, only the visual. When overwhelmed by the spectacle of a scenic hotspot, we are often overwhelmed by all of these elements.

So what to do? Look through your camera. The viewfinder does not lie (usually). Try to see what you are looking at as the finished picture. Most people perfunctorily take pictures, hoping that somehow the shot will come out great. If you wonder how the pictures came out when you are on the way to the drug store to get them, you’re doing something wrong. At the moment you click the pic, you should know exactly what you will get. (Of course with digital, that’s not a trick!).

Now, I was a tad dishonest in saying that you can’t capture all of the elements of a scene. You can hint at them. For starters, motion. Yes, even in a still picture, there is motion. Something happened before, during and after your picture. In a mountain vista scene, you may find something that hints at motion, whether it be a branch of a tree that has been swaying in the breeze, or a river flowing through the valley below. These add a sense of motion.

Then there’s the “rule of thirds.” When you place the main object of the picture smack-dab in the middle, it is static and boring. Place it one third of the way from either side, and you IMPLY motion. Put the horizon in a landscape photo a third of the way up or down, not across the middle.

Remember, when a person looks at a picture, their eyes move. You want to frame your photo to help that movement. If you can find some lines in the scene, such as a skyline, cloud formation, path through the forest, etcetera, use it interestingly, and with the rule of thirds to draw your viewer’s eyes into the picture.

Avoid “summit syndrome.” You get to the top of Mount Washington and shoot the majestic vista. Great. The pictures come out … boring! How? No PERSPECTIVE. Big vistas will be flat unless you have an object in the foreground, such as a rock or a tree, to give them perspective. Then the eye really grasps how big this scene is. People enjoying the view is a real winner, because the viewer may identify with their emotions, giving the image real impact.

Cheese! Yes, you do have to take the family photos. It’s obligatory. But when you do, make sure that they show the LOCATION of the photo. Otherwise, you might as well do it on your driveway. Frame the scene in context, with landmarks as part of the picture. Find a way to tell as story in the picture, such as little Sara climbing up the rocks by the waterfall.

Finally, any element in the picture that hints at more senses than just the visual will make it remarkable. Actor headshots for example, tell a story about the subject. You can almost hear them saying their next lines. If you photograph a garden, the viewer may experience the aroma of the flowers. A tourist street with an accordion player on the corner may have your amazed friends whistling “Dixie.”

In summation, picture taking on travel is recording the experience in a satisfying way. Use motion, perspective, sensory, storytelling and so forth, to bring your photos to life. Oh, and needless to say, make your job easy and go to great places! See you at the overlook!

Customer Review: ZX too fragile
I recently had a problem with a Casio EX-Z70 which had to be returned for repair, which cost ?100. The display cover was cracked, but soon after the camera failed completely, but wasn’t covered by warranty. It’s a pity, because I want another camera and the speed of operation is impressive so I’ll have to take my chances on another make.
Customer Review: Absolute Let Down
I had this camera for less than two weeks and someone dropped it causing the lens to keep protruding outwards. The camera can not take any sort of shock without breaking. I inquired about repair and found out I would need a whole new lens costing ?125 which is ?15 short of what I paid for it in the first place. I have now been warned that casio do not sell parts individually and never drop their prices therefore this product is quite a risk as at some time or another, the camera will be dropped. My advise is stay away and get the new olympus that the kid throws around the place and still works!

Customer Review: Simple and slick
This is a simple leather case for the popular W and T series, the cameras are so small that this should make them more noticeable in your pocket (so there are less panic moments when you think it may have dropped out). The T and W series have some pretty high spec cameras in the range (no single figures formegapixels here, well, some maybe!). Okay - so there’s no nifty compartments for memory cards, but who needs that if you’ve slipped in a 8GB beasty!?! But lets face it - you’ve stumbled across this on Amazon because of it’s name! :-)

Customer Review: only relevant for the usage with the canon digital ixus 960is or a simmilarly sized camera
I was not happy with this product, as it did not fit my camera nicely. I took it back to jessops to try the 5 and 30 cases, but they were not giving me a good fit either. Another thing to mention is that the case adds bulk to the camera itself; it makes it 1.8 cms thicker. Also, the way to close the case is by a magnet flap? I mean, that doesnt seem right to me considering the security of my camera, or even the safty, in fact. on the lighter side, the product is very nice to look at, and was of good quality; the suade detailing and soft leather give a lovely finish. I would recomend going into a shop that sells this case and try it out, before you buy it. I paid a full ?25 for this case in jessops, as it was the only one that fitted my camera - i neede immediate protection. I intend to refund my case and buy the Canon DCC-70 Soft Leather Case from amazon for ?12, for a gauranteed fit. I would suggest that people who have a canon Digital IXUS 700, 750, 800, 850 IS,860 IS, 900Ti or 960 IS camera, should buy the DCC-70 case, instead of this one. I hope this review has helped you.
Customer Review: Really like this case with my F31fd!
Just to second the other review here - bought this for my F31fd and it is a perfect fit. The dimensions seem just right, the camera slides in and out easily but the case isn’t baggy in any way. It is nicely put together from soft leather and matches the quality feel of the camera very well. I particularly like the magnet to hold the flap shut, you can open the case and slide the camera out noiselessly without the ‘rasping’ you get with velcro. Great for situations where you don’t want the world to know you are getting ready to shoot!
