Customer Review: Not Bad
I purchased this bag for my new Sony DCR-HC27E Camcorder based on the previous review here. It’s not bad, but not great quality. Lowepro products are definetely better, but then this was cheaper. I guess you get what you pay for. It does the job.

Customer Review: Brilliant Camcorder Case
I received this bag yesterday and am very happy with it. I have a Sony DCR-HC27E and the bag is a perfect size for it. There are handy pockets which provide ample space for at least 3 or 4 spare tapes plus instruction book etc. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Great buy one now
I am so pleased with this cam its light easy to use and for the money, you cant ask more. Its tiny and i mean tiny fits in palm of your hand and does not weigh much at all. its great buy one, you wont regret it;0) I spent ages looking all over the web and the reviews for this cam on amazon, were enough to make me order it.
Customer Review: Best miniDV camcorder for under ?200
A brilliant little camcorder. Served me well for almost a year now and nothing has gone wrong, with marvelous picture and video quality despite the price (?150 when I got it). It is really small and, although it uses tapes, you would usually transfer your footage to the computer and then rewind the tape to use it again so you don’t have to buy more tapes. Each tape holds 60 mins on high quality or 90 mins on low quality. You can also plug your camcorder into the TV or watch the videos which you put onto the computer on a DVD! Apart from what I have already said, there are many more things you can do with the camcorder such as black and white mode, snow or sand mode and portrait mode. Trust Samsung, don’t be fooled by the ridiculously low price!

Canon HV20 High Definition Camcorder (10X Optical Zoom, 2.7″ Widescreen Colour LCD)

Canon HV20 High Definition Camcorder (10X Optical Zoom, 2.7″ Widescreen Colour LCD)
As a digital still camera the HV20 HD Camcorder excels with all of Canons best digital camera features. Users can accurately focus their shots with nine-point autofocus and then take vibrant 3.1 megapixel images to a miniSD card. While simultaneously recording HD video to tape the HV20 HD Camcorder can capture two megapixel photos to card or these two megapixel images can later be extracted from the video itself allowing users a second chance to snap that once in a lifetime image.

Customer Review: Does what it says on the tin!!!
I jsut sold my Sony HDR FX1 because it was too big. I banked the money and bought this Canon with the proceeds. Its buidl quality isn’t amazing but the quality of the pics really is awesome. The still preformance is good too.

Highly recommended over the Sony similar model which is 200 pounds more.

Very satified.

Customer Review: Good video quality
There are now HD cams available that will record to internal harddisks, but I much prefer this Canon with its tape recording. I find tape to be far easier to store, especially at HD quality, I didn’t want to be buying a new harddisk every 6 months to store the footage. The main disadvantage with tapes of course, is having to rewind and search for scenes.

On the subject of tapes, for anyone new to HDV camcorders, you can actually use plain old mini-DV tapes in this camcorder to record HDV footage, you still get 60 minutes a tape because the footage is now in mpeg2 rather than DV encoding. Actually the camcorder reports 61 minutes when a new mini-DV tape is inserted.

The video light is a bit gimicky. It works ok, but it’s only really just a single LED lamp, so is very weak and only work up to about 6 feet at the most, even then the angle of light is quite narrow, so the frame is light in the middle, dark on the edges.

The photo flash is also just ok, but better than nothing. When taking pictures in dedicated photo mode you have 4:3 format; when in video mode, it’s basically a still capture of the video frame, so is wide-screen.

There’s definitely room for improvements on the ergonomics front, the zoom rocker for example doesn’t fall naturally on your fingertips.

The cam has firewire out, but your software will need to understand HDV in order to capture the footage. The cam doesn’t come with any video editing software. I know Adobe Premiere Elements 3 can handle HDV, not sure what else can.

All in all, I am very happy with this cam, I can live with the ergonomics problem, especially when I know I’m capturing my kids growing up, or the wedding, or the party in the best HD quality I know of.

Compared to my previous “HD” cam, the Sanyo HD1 with the HV20 is like comparing a basic Ford Fiesta with a top of the range Audi A4 - bigger yes it is, but it’s so much nicer.

Wasnt expecting much…I now use it all the time. Easy to use, records straight onto an SD card which then plays back in reasonable quality on my TV and my Windows Media Player. Takes both still pictures and video with ease. I probably use this more than my main camcorder as I do alot of You Tube clips and post them online. This is perfect the that!!

How to take Great Photos of Your Pet

We all love our animals. They do such funny, adorable, and cute things. But somehow when that camera comes out they run and hide or they just seem to always be pointed away from the camera when you push the button. Well here are some tips to help you have a better chance at getting great photos of your pet.

1. Don’t wake your pet out of deep sleep and attempt to coerce him into performing for the camera. It won’t happen. Try to take photos of your pet during their routine playtime.

2. If there is enough daylight to take photos then turn the flash off. My cat has learned to close his eyes just before the flash goes off. He learned that little trick quick too! Many times a camera flash is just too bright for them, that’s why they point away from you when they know that you’re taking photos.

3. Don’t try to get them looking into the camera. If there is someone around who can play with your pet just get a shot of them playing with someone else. You can have the photo with the person and the pet or get close to crop the person out of the shot.

4. If your pet always runs away from you every time you pull the camera out try leaving the camera sit out where it can be seen. Take photos of other things in the home and try turning the flash off.

5. Be prepared to grab your camera and take photos when your pet is ready, read “doing something cute.” I’ve been able to get some of the best photos of my cat when he’s just doing something on his own.

Remember don’t put pressure on your animal to perform for the camera. Think more on the lines of catch them in their natural habitat. Our pets want to make us happy and you can easily confuse them by pressuring them to look good for the camera. Also be prepared to take a whole lot of bad photos for that one really good one.

Customer Review: Promising…
The camera is larger than I think it needs to be, surprisingly wide but the finish is good. The controls I found fiddly but at least it does not power up when you sit down with it in your pocket. The images were bright, contrasty and noisy. Great for snaps but not for quality images. What I did like like was the toggle button stick thing where you can adjust the exposure up or done - nice and easy to use and effective, all my other cameras involved you going into endless menus to do that. All an all a nice little compact and it is easy to use. The build quality seems pretty solid too.
Customer Review: Great Camera
Just received this camera today and have been runing around taking pics of everything just testing all the different modes and its awesome, ok so it is my first decent digital camera but its briliant and so simple to use its so simple the instruction book is pretty much useless. Great camera briliant for the price, small, light, looks good, brilliant pics, great settings, i could go on all day.

Customer Review: Be sure to get insurance!
Being a poor poor student, I opted out of getting insurance for my NV10 that I purchased from eBay - sorry amazon! but it was ?50 cheaper at the time. Anyway I didn’t bother because I always take good care of my gadgetry, but this was a mistake I shan’t make again. I didn’t realise that in a small %age of NV10, there’s an inherent software ( i assume) problem, that cuts in at random for no particular reason where the lens cover refuses to open - gettin stuck, and the lens motor doesn’t operate, so doesn’t “pop” out when turned on. It still lets you view photos on the memory card and onboard memory, but doesn’t allow picture taking, it just comes out as a blur before the camera turns itself off. When i went to get it looked at, the camera shop said that it’d cost more than the camera was worth to repair it, so I’ve had to opt out for a cheaper Samsung D75, costing ?70 instead of the ?180 the NV10 cost a year ago. The eBay shop owner wouldn’t contact me back (they had their positive feedback, they didn’t need anything else). All this because I didn’t purchase some cheap insurance… The NV10 is an absolutely FANTASTIC camera and has served me for 1000+ top-class photos in the 8months I had it, but it has to be said that the microphone cuts out on video at random intervals. It’s more of a photo camera, but the finger-slidey control system is pretty funky and the decent-sized screen isn’t to be sniffed at. GET INSURANCE!
Customer Review: what you need to know before you buy….
Yep its good quality and in good light is great and clarity is good. It’s little unorthodox in its control. Two sets of buttons act as a grid select one button and it brings up options then select the buttons at the side to chose. Piece of cake when you get used to it. What i don’t like… The USB connection is via a special lead with a special plug (i havent checked out what happens if I lose/misplace this…..???? ??? ) The usb end of this lead fits either your pc for transfer or a mains unit to charge. What i’m REALLY unhappy about is the socket for this plug is on the underside of the camera. I dont want to think what will happen if i put this camera on a damp/wet surface by accident. OK so 99% of the time the camera wont get in to this situation but id be happier if it were on the side or at least covered in some way. The flash is a pop up type which you have to put down yourself when you switch the camera off… tried to put it the case with the flash up a couple of times-how long before i do some damage ??? What you get in the box special usb lead charger instruction manual (basic) cd with full manual(pdf) and digimaster software(though little better than windows explorer in thumbnail mode) In spite of the above points it is a really good camera I trusted a Eurodisney trip with it and was not disappointed. It seems to cope well with all situations In movie mode it take up to 640×480 in AVI and it is very good. (My olympus takes .mov format - a disaster as they have to be converted to burn to dvd) These avi movies (not sure what the base format is mpeg2 ?? will burn with nero no prob.) it also takes SD cards which are cheap as chips. Hope some of this helps.

Removing a Textured Pattern from a Scanned Photo - 5 Minute Digital Fix

One of the most common problems when dealing with scanned photographs as part of a digital restoration activity is that after scanning, the digital image appears to have a textured pattern to it.

This is often caused by the fact that the photograph in question has been printed on textured photographic paper.

This article will show you how to remove the un-desirable pattern effect without significantly loosing any of the important image detail.

The problematic photo may well be an old black and white, sepia, or even a more modern colour photograph.

(I remember Kodak introducing their “Silk finish” prints many years ago printed on a silky sheen textured paper!).

The example image on our web-site is an old black and white wedding photograph that has been printed on a textured paper.

If you look closely at the white cornice behind the bride and groom you can clearly see that the textured pattern of the photographic paper has been faithfully re-produced during the scanning of the photo.

Before we commence any major restoration work we would like to remove as much of the un-desirable textured pattern as is possible.

Step 1

Open the image up in Adobe Photoshop and the first step is to create a duplicate (copy) layer of the original image by selecting Layer-> Duplicate Layer .. and give the new layer an appropriate name.

Zoom in close enough to get an appreciation of how severe the textured pattern is, but keep some picture detail visible (especially people’s faces) so that you can easily judge how well the texture removal is proceeding without loosing too much important picture detail.

Step 2

With the duplicate layer active apply a Gaussian Blur by selecting Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur …

A pop-up option box will allow you to set the amount of Gaussian blur to apply to the image.

I generally start with a Radius = 1.5 and work up from there, constantly looking at the image to see the affect as I increase the blur radius.

Anything over a Radius = 5.0 will usually be far too harsh, so in the example on the web-site the required outcome is to “minimise” the texture pattern effect without compromising the important detail in the photo.

For our web-site example image I found I was able to set Radius = 3.5 without any significant loss of detail.

The example image is starting to “soften”, but the textured pattern has clearly diminished.

Step 3

Zooming out to have a look at the complete photo reveals that the un-desirable textured pattern has all but vanished with only minor softening of the important image detail.

Each photo you work on will have to be judged on its own merits when determining the amount of blur to apply.

But all is not lost on retaining that important image detail!!

Step 4

Remember … the Gaussian blur has been applied to the duplicate layer we created at the start of the exercise.

The original image, complete with texture, is sitting under the duplicate layer.

By using Photoshop’s Layer Blending Modes and Layer Opacity we can produce an image made up of a combination of both layers with some of the detail from the lower original layer showing through.

Again, each photo will be judged on its own merits and the setting I finalised on for our example image on the web-site may not be the same as you will find most suitable for your own images.

Try experimenting with the different blending modes and layer opacity settings.

I finally settled on a blending mode of “Luminosity” and Opacity of 85% for the Gaussian Blur layer.

Step 5

To finalise the image I then “flattened” the two layers into a single image layer by selecting Layer->Flatten Image.

Step 6

I then checked the tonal range of our combined layered image using the Levels command by selecting Image->Adjustment->Levels … and fine tuned the black, white and grey points.

Step 7

And last but not least, we can still bring a little bit more “sharpness” out of the image by finally applying a small amount of Unsharp Mask by selecting Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask …

Experimenting with the various settings, I was able to settle upon Amount = 185%; Radius = 2.5 pixels; and Threshold = 50 levels.

And there you have it … the removal of an un-desirable textured pattern without significantly sacrificing important image detail.

Customer Review: Bang on!
I’ve only had my T20 for a little while, but compared to many of the other camera’s I’d owned down the line, this easily beats most of them “hand’s down!” The picutre quality is very good, with a fairly good sized screen. The vibrancy in the colour also wins it. The choices in facility is also good. Its also small and will fit into the smallest of pockets. A great all-rounder, and I can easily recommend this camera to anyone.
Customer Review: TOTALY DISAPPOINTED
I HAD PREVIOUSLY KONICA-MINOLTA DIMAGE-50 BUT LOST IT FEW MONTHS AGO, THAT CAMERA WAS 3 YEARS OLD AND ONLY 5MP BUT HAS MUCH BETTER QUALITY AND SPESCIFICATION THAN THIS CAMERA.I BOUGHT SONY T20 RECENTLY. I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE SUCH A POOR QUALITY FROM SONY. I WILL DEFINITLY NOT RECOMMENDED IT TO ANY ONE AND I HOPE THAT THE NEW ARRIVAL FROM SONY THE T200 WHICH I HOPE TO BUY SOON WILL BE BETTER QUALITY THAN THIS ONE.
