Customer Review: good but misleading - you need more than just this camcorder
If you’re buying this MD160 camcorder as an entry level machine for the start of your budding filmmaking career, it can be a bit misleading. This is my first camcorder and after much research of price and formats (harddrive/DVD/miniDV) I settled for this as good value for money, one of the best features not listed on many is the ability to transfer back to a tape in the camcorder once you’re done.

The camera itself is fairly easy to use out of the box with a lot of features buried in its options if you want to be more specific about what you want to shoot or want to just play around. I haven’t had a lot of time to shoot videos but you’re going to hit the biggest hurdles out of the box before you even start anyway.

It should have been more readily listed by Canon that you need to already have more than just this camcorder to use it, it doesn’t come with a miniDV tape it doesn’t come with a firewire cable the software it does come with is for use with the SDcard feature only, which is also disappointing in that you can only record video in 10-30 second bursts.

The main features I wanted were the ability to shoot video transfer it to my PC for editing. Not only do you have to buy a separate firewire cable to connect your new camcorder to your PC to be able to do this. Here’s where the DM160 instruction Manuel leaves you in the lurch, pointing you to refer to your own software for how to do this essential feature.

Windows XP (home edition) comes with windows movie maker as standard and fortunately it is very easy to use that program to transfer your recordings (in .wma file format) to your PC (and back) with enough options to make low quality youtube videos or full TV standard. Other programs like Nero and Adobe Premiere (stores in .AVI format - large files though) can also be used. So make sure you have one of them and more importantly a firewire connection on your PC before you buy this camcorder. As not knowing this with camcorder out of the box was very disconcerting and disappointing for me.

Customer Review: Pretty good for the dosh!
Opted for the more expensive MD160 instead of MD101 for firewire connection (and a few other things). Good miniDV camcorder for those who don’t want to spend a fortune and don’t require HD. Doesn’t do low-light well but can live with that. Also no separate battery charger (charges attached to camera) so that is unusual, haven’t had a problem as bought additional hi-capacity battery, might be an issue with standard battery if you want to record more than an 90mins or so. Bought Sony Vegas 8 as well and quite happily downloading to a Vista pc via firewire. If you want bells and whistles (and to spend more money) this is not for you!

I have this camera for about 6 months and is excellent. This is my first camcorder but i love it. Takes excellent video quality, easy to use, and quite small to always carry with you. The optical zoom is fantastic, and the picture quality with up to 20x digital zoom is very good as well. Nice and vibrant colours, no pixels whatsoever with optical zoom (mind you though need to use the right setting for the right moment). The only negative is the absence of flashlight and the battery wont last for more than 45mins, hence the 4 stars. I love this liitle gem though and very happy with it.

Customer Review: Perfect for my Fujifilm S9600
I purchased this bag online so was unable to test the fit with my Fujifilm S9600. Luckily it fits like a glove. I was looking at the Apex 110AW also but the 120 is a little longer which means it’ll take the camera with the lens hood in place. I can fit in a all the associated cables, spare batteries and the battery charger without it all rattling around like they would in a much bigger bag.

The build quality is superb, padding seems good and there is a microfibre cloth built in to protect delicate lcd displays on the back of your camera. The easily deployed (and easy to stash) rain cover will protect your camera and case from the elements.

All in all I am very impressed. Size was important to me as I wanted all my stuff in one place but I wanted a bag small enough I wouldn’t be put off taking it to places. Although the S9600 isn’t a digital SLR it is very similar in size so I can see this bag being perfect for your EOS 400D, or similar, with a reasonably sized zoom lense attached.

Customer Review: A Good pocket camera
First off the camera is small and fits nicely into my shirt pocket. This is one of primary reasons I bought this one over any other. I found Menus clear and simple and operation to be very easy. But….Although large and clear, I found the LCD display difficult to view in bright light conditions. The pictures I took in all conditions are noisy, but having said that they look good when printed at 6″x4″. Quality seems to improve when using one of the dedicated modes…Portrait, Landscape, night time etc… One final point: The macro mode is great. The focus is sharp, the colours are well saturated and you can achieve a very shallow Depth of Field. Overall, for the ?100ish pounds I spent I am a happy customer.
Customer Review: Nikon versus Canon
I couldn’t decide whether to buy the Nikon Coolpix S200 or the Canon Ixus 75. At first I bought the Canon, but I found some of the pictures to be a bit too dark. So I then tried the Nikon. The Nikon has some useful features which the Canon doesn’t have - the Nikon shows how many photos you have left on the memory card, which the Canon doesn’t do. Also, I found the Nikon photos to be slightly brighter than the Canon. However, the Nikon does have some drawbacks - it only focuses on what’s in the centre of the frame. So if you want to focus on something off-centre, you have to use focus lock. Also, the LCD screen on the Nikon is difficult to see in bright sunlight, and the movie quality is OK but not great. Overall, I would say that the Canon is a slightly better camera. The Canon has a 9 point focussing system, so you don’t have to use focus lock for things off-centre. Plus the Canon LCD screen can be seen OK in bright sunlight, and it has good movie quality. The only drawback with the Canon is that some photos are a bit too dark. But if you get them printed with Photobox or Boots, they will correct this automatically and the printed photos will be brighter. So I’ve decided to stick with the Canon.

Customer Review: Great product for a great price
The main reason for this purchase was because of the price. It is being sold at a ?200 reduction from Jessops. So that is quite good. The build quality is good as it feels sturdy and reliable. I also bought it because of the DVD capability. It is quite easy to use but needs DVD-RW if you really want to erase and do it again. The operations of the camcorder are good because it is easy to navigate. However you will be needing quite alot (3 to 4) batteries if you want to take loads of videos, because the batteries go quite quickly. This is the only down side to this camcorder. All in all a good all rounded camcorder for a good price. Hope it helps

Bought this camera five weeks ago whilst on holiday, have recorded both HD ans SD. The HD is mindblowing when hooked upp to a 1080HD TV. You would honestly think it was recorded by a pro.

Also bought Sony Vegas Platinum editing studio. This does thet you edit the AVCHD format and burn it to standard DVD’s in SD format whilst keeping the original HD content for future burns to Blu Ray when cost comes down or showing on a HD TV via the Camcorder its self.

To summarise, an amazing camera at a great price.

A brilliant little camcorder. Served me well for almost a year now and nothing has gone wrong, with marvelous picture and video quality despite the price (?150 when I got it). It is really small and, although it uses tapes, you would usually transfer your footage to the computer and then rewind the tape to use it again so you don’t have to buy more tapes. Each tape holds 60 mins on high quality or 90 mins on low quality. You can also plug your camcorder into the TV or watch the videos which you put onto the computer on a DVD! Apart from what I have already said, there are many more things you can do with the camcorder such as black and white mode, snow or sand mode and portrait mode. Trust Samsung, don’t be fooled by the ridiculously low price!

sony have done it again, this is a high quality camcorder at a very affordable price, i found it very easy to use i would almost say fool proof, its not as compact as the dv’s but is well made and does have that air of quality about it, lets face it its a cheap camcorder and therefore has to cover the basics which it does extremely well, but i personally feel that it offers a value for money that is hard to beat. So i give it 5 stars why?, well its not the best camcorder out there but it doesn’t try to be it trys and succeeds to be the best affordable mid range camera that there in my opinion is. This was a great first camcorder for me, note you should look around for tapes since they can be quite pricy, but have a look because i found some very cheap ones that were of a high quality.

Customer Review: A VERY CHEAP HDD DIGITAL CAMCORDER.
I must confess that I was shocked to find such an advanced camcorder at such a low price. I have had two Sony video 8 camcorders over the past 15 or so years and there bulk means limited use. My old Video 8 now has problems so I never realised I could afford a HDD camera. The Jvc with it’s 20GB HDD gives a fantastic recording all of which can be edited on the P.C . I have yet to try this out so I can’t comment as yet but I can’t wait to give it a go. There are three issues that let this camera down however - one being the poor LCD screen that’s difficult to watch while recording due to it’s viewing range. The second being the poor battery life which is at best 50 minutes from the standard 7200 MHN. The third being the siting of the control joystick located on the flimsy LCD screen. I feel this is a stupid place to put this as the screen is liable to get broken. But overall this is still a great very compact camcorder for the price and well worth it.

When I first saw this camera on Amazon I honestly thought I’d found the dream camera. The price was good for the features that were offered. However, I soon realised that the JHV GZ-M21E was far from a dream-like… As you’ll have read in other reviews, Amazon messed up and like many other customers I was sent a European version. The plug didn’t fit with any of the voltage converters I tried, but luckily I had access to a shaver socket and used that to charge. We did call them, but - long story short; Amazon’s customer service is pathetic. This is Amazon’s fault so I won’t base the product rating on my bad experience, but unfortunately for JVC, this small piece of awful machinery hardly does itself justice as it is. The video quality isn’t great, but I only used it for YouTube videos so I didn’t complain. The focus was awful - when holding the camera perfectly still it would spontaneously blur, ruining many movies. I’m not sure what gave JVC the fantastic idea of making the camera record into some obscene unique JHV-created format which is only compatible with their FOUL and PESTILENT software, but I can only assume copius amounts of crack. The worst thing about this camera? The battery life. It was awful. I got about 2-3 hours of battery life at a time, even if I just left it on without recording. Conveniently, there was a catalogue of JVC products in the box which included ludicrously priced battery upgrades. And hence, I plan to shout at Amazon until I get a refund, and then buy myself a Sony HD Handycam, the likes of which I’ve heard endless streams of positivity about.

Having read the reviews on this item i was in 2 minds on taking a chance as it was a bargain price.

In the end what the hell i can always return it,when it arrived i connected it up to my GZ-MG175 camcorder and set about doing a DVD of Christmas.In 30 mins i had a DVD of Christmas.

It was so easy to use with the menus on the camcorder.

The disks i use are Verbatim DVD -R.

Customer Review: Should have listened to everyone else!
Recently purchased a JVC Everio H/D camcorder and was having problems coping onto disc on my computer so purchased this item as thought it was a bargain! did read a few negative reviews but thought they must be doing something wrong ! When I tried to burn my disc got exactly the same message - “incompatable disc” tried every type of disc going and eventually rang JVC helpline who were most unhelpful and said it must be a faulty burner and to return it (which I have now done!) when I said to them that I had read of a number of people having the same problem they just said “it doesn’t surprise me, we sell thousands of them and you aren’t just going to get one or two that are faulty!” .. mmm. helpful.. thanks !!

So my advice would be DON’T BOTHER, save yourself the hassle!

in the flesh it looks even cheaper and nastier; its cheap plastic components are not well screwed together either. Buttons are floppy and have an unpleasant feel in use - you’d actually think it was a plastic 50p toy, or came as a gift with a happy meal - or possibly from a christmas cracker. My 12 year old daughter, for whom it was bought as a present, threw it back at me, saying she wouldnt be seen dead with it.

Lowepro quality, Bought to fit my new Canon S3IS camera which fits into this verticle case snuggly front/back, but has 2cm gap down the side of the case where the camera strap can be stowed. The case has a shoulder strap and a padded hand strap on the both velcro and zip fastening top. Front external pocket for a spare set of batteries. Additional flapped pockets on both sides will take memory cards or use the internal zipped pocket inside the top. This case looks stylish and complements the camera whilst ensuring the camera is protected by the ample padding. Hard to imagine a better case then this.
