Customer Review: Just brilliant - and well priced
Having had a Canon Camcorder for 8 years (The MV20i) I am already hooked on the brilliance of Canon. So this move to the next stage was for me merely a point in time of when to buy and what to buy. My old model had most of what I needed in the new but since I do all of my editing on my PC now via Pinnacle Studio - I wanted the option of transferring my edited movie back onto my DV tape and the Firewire in/out option within the HV20 gives me this. I have found the HV20 to be a very user friendly piece of kit that produces just awesome pictures. The ergonomics are mentioned in a few reports and yes I would agree that they dont seem to be placed around a normel persons hand - the zoom dial for example doesnt fit nicely in line with the index finger that is supposed to operate it but, I guess I will get used to it. The problem is that my previous model was so good then these small items need to be commented upon. However, no way would that stop me giving this a 5 star rating. I am also impressed by the photograhic capability at the 3mpixel camera although I would have preferred to have known that I needed to buy memory card so I could have done that at the same time. (256meg recommended)

I have now had the product for just over a week and have found it to be just perfect for what I wanted. I must also comment on the brilliant ability to control the sound “in” input via a manual control. This is really useful where you are in a quiet room and the speech you want to pick up is at the other side of the room.

Finally no matter what you do - if you have an HD television then invest in HD tapes the differance is just amazing and this is after recording in ordinary mini DV and finding that superb too. Worth every penny.

Customer Review: Great quality video from the HV 20
After doing a lot of research in 2007 I decided to buy the HV 20 I was going to get 1 about 5 months before I did but I was still not sure so really looked into what was out there and even after the 5months of looking around nothing came out that could touch the picture quality at the price of the canon. I work with a lot of video cameras in my job and this little camera has really impressed me.

1 st off remeber this is not being sold as semi pro camrea its just a general consumer camera that is producing some of the best quality pictures I have seen when even compared to pro and semi pro units that can cost thousands of pounds.

I have been using it in some real low light conditions for filming danceing in low light enviroments (clubs) and have been impressed with the quality of the capture. I found with setting the camera to HDV (PF25) and the sports aperture setting has produced some of the best results in low light.

The 25 frame emulation mode will capture your videos that gives them a look as if they have been captured on a film camera somthing similar to what a lot of TV drama is shot emulating the look of a super 16mm camera. Its not that the video looks like it has been shot on film it has the ablity to give the camera to record footage with a different feel that is really hard to explain but it certainly has the feel as if it has been shot on a much more expensive unit than the HV 20.

The quality of the built in 3 meg still camera is nat amazing but I have found it a great tool that if used right can capture some good quality pictures that you can use in your videos when it comes to editing those family movies. The camera also has a built in flash which is very limited but is better than no flash I guess.It records the stills on to Mini SD card and you can switch bettween capturing video and stills by a switch on the side of the unit. You are supposedly able to capture stills at a low res whilst filming but I have not used this option as the resolution is to low.

I have had some issues with the auto focus but this is normal for these types of units and the wheel on the side of the unit for manual focusing I have found useless. You will never get the right feel being detached from the lens unit.

I have been impressed with the built in mic for basic recording but if you plan on doing anything where the sound is really improtant you should definatly invest in an exturnal mic.

I could talk about this camera for ages so I will shut up now.

Basically if you want a HDV Tape based unit at a great price and accept that this is not a pro unit you cant go wrong, (I have even shot a short film onit) with good results so it shows you a bad work man can always blame his tools and I have been really impressed with this tool.

Customer Review: Battery compartment a problem
Nice little compact movie camera - good for outdoors - seems to take time to adjust to light indoors and needs some strong artificial light to take good indoor movies. I liked it a lot, but after only a few months the sliding cover for the battery compartment/SD slot has broken - the small plastic lugs on one side have broken away, so if you buy one, be very careful with that part of it. I was very happy with mine until then.

I bought this bag specifically for a new point and shoot digital camera with underwater housing and a number of accessories. It works like a dream and is like Dr Who’s Tardis inside. Intregal cloth and water proof cover are great too. It also has internal pockets, adjustable dividers and slots for memory cards. Customer Review: Great little bag
This was the cheapest camcorder bag I could find, not that it shows. The build quality is top notch. The bag feels robust and hard-wearing and has enough padding to protect the contents from minor knocks. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is just the right size to accommodate not only my MV930 camcorder, but my Ixus 550 too, meaning I only need to take one bag with me on a day out. There’s still room for a couple of mini DV tapes inside the bag and everything fits snugly with no rattling around. The pouch on the front offers ample room for other essential items - a couple of spare batteries, compact flash cards, mini-tripod, lens brush and a video cable. Suits my needs perfectly. Customer Review: Wide angle lense..a must.
I bought this at heathrow VAT free. I really just wanted a wide angle lense camera but I was also impressed with the quality of the picture. Usually my photos are a bit crap but this seems to have helped my photgraphic skills.

It also has a large internal memory some of which is taken up by a world tour guide (why they have this is beyond me) but I think this can be deleted.

Overall I like it and would buy another.

I an am amateur photographer and new to DSLR cameras. This book thoroughly explains all aspects of the Canon EOS 400D with useful guidelines on photography. I would recommend this to amateurs who want to know this camera inside out.
Customer Review: A mediocre and misleading guide
At around ?9 it is not bad value for money; I just expected more. The book is of little, if any, use to an experienced photographer and I think it will confuse beginners. [I had better explain who I am - a middle aged, amateur photographer, who started with 35mm SLRs, progressed to digital cameras and have now got my first Digital SLR, the 400D]. In places, the book is confusing and incorrect and even annoying to read; which I can illustrate with three examples near the beginning. (Example 1) In the Quick Tour (pp1-10) there are four good illustrations, except that two are of small details that a beginner will not know where they are on the camera. It is not until pp14-16 of Chapter 1 that the whole camera is illustrated; but even here the back view, which has all the important buttons, is only half a page wide and too small to show what is written beside the buttons. (Example 2) The Quick Tour (p5) states that “Program AE … is a fully automatic, but shiftable mode. Shiftable means that you can CHANGE THE EXPOSURE [my capitals] by changing (or shifting) either the shutter speed or apperture …”. This is rubbish! You cannot change the exposure this way - turning the main dial changes both the shutter speed and the apperture together (not either/or) so that the exposure remains fixed. The Glossary (p246) does give the correct definition of exposure. (Example 3) The first paragraph about white-balance bracketing (p26) states that “White-balance bracketing captures three images, each with +/-3 one-stop differences in colour …”; the explanation in the Camera’s Instruction Manual is much easier to understand. All in all, a disappointing book that I would not recommend to anyone who was not already familiar with the main concepts of digital cameras; in which case they would not really need this book.

Customer Review: i-nique camera case for a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ2
Looks good, feels good and fits well. Nicely made but not too happy withg the design. I am off shortly for a 3 week holiday so have been wearing the case with camera on my belt using the belt-clip. The circular attachment that screws into the case has come unscrewed twice as it is very hard to tighten sufficiently onto the case. The first time this happened the magnetic clip failed to hold and the camera was slightly damaged. Not happy. Also, the soft leather around the fixing hole has already stretched considerably so I am wondering how long it will last.

My other critisism is that there is no room to hold a spare battery other than loose in the bottom under the camera thus risking its loss when the camera is in use.

Bought this for a canon G9, which fits well. However, the pocket “for memory cards and cables” only just fits one memory card (in its plastic case). This is ok as long as you don’t mind carrying cables/spare batteries seperately, as it does mean the case is quite small. The carabiner which comes with it is very small. Also, the case isn’t that well padded, but the material is quite hard. Protects the camera well enough in the bottom of my bag, but I wouldn’t want to drop it. A good point is that it doesn’t LOOK like a camera case.

The 3.2 Megapixel camera will produce images up to B4 (250 x 353 mm) depending on settings. With the 3x optical and 4x digital zoom lens the camera offers the equivalent of 38–115 mm in a 35 mm camera with an F range of F2.8–F4.9.

When it comes to pre-programmed options though the Nikon Coolpix 3100 wins hands down, apart from the basic portrait, landscape, sports and night settings you can also set the picture via the scene option, which allows you to break down things further. Here you can chose from a range of options including party/indoor, dusk/dawn, close-up and museum. Add to this, four flash modes and seven white balance modes and you’ve got a camera with plenty of options.

Picture quality is very good and for a 3.2 Megapixel camera, the detail is very good on grass and greens; other surfaces such as brick and similar-patterned surfaces are slightly lacking in colour variation. The Nikon 3100 also coped well with depth of field being able to capture landscapes.

Overall this camera is a good starter in the field of digital imaging. It is more expensive that the other entry-level cameras, however you do get a charger included in the box, a hassle saved from the start. –Jason Denwood

Don’t get me wrong, i really loved my little Nikon camera at first. i have had it say 4 years and I don’t know if it’s just because it’s old or if it’s the camera but after about 2 years the silly thing will only take about 2 picutres before it shows that i need to put new batteries in it. it is also VERY slow to recover from taking a picture. I used to LOVE This camera but now i am replacing it.

Good pictures and easy to use but mode dial gets knocked easily, meaning you have to select the mode you want on getting it out to use. Battery cover is flimsy and failed despite living a fairly sheltered life. And the worse thing - the battery life is awful and we’ve given up on our and will replace shortly.

Customer Review: This is the one to buy!!!
Having spent many hours editing and the trying to render various pieces of video footage on to a Pinnacle software system (with no success what so ever) I decided to go on previous recommendations and buy the Sony Vageas Movie Studio +DVD 6 (Platinum Edition). After taking delivery, editing with it and rendereing a superb quality DVD at the first attempt, my thoughts were “why didn’t I but this one from the very start, instead of wasting my time with other feeble excuses of editing software?”. This software didn’t “hang up” the P.C. once during either the editing stage or the rendering stage. Previous software I’ve used was “hanging up” everytime I tried to do anything with it. If you are looking to buy some video editing software, without spending the amount the professionals do, then get this one. It is the only one I’ve found that actually works!!!

Superb features and once you get the hang of how to do things through the use of the excellent tutorials, it’s a breeze to use and the results are great. Not that I have ever used “professional” software, but I would imagine it performs just as well on this version and at a fantastic price too!!

What can I say except “Thanks Sony, you’ve made me believe that their are some companies that can at least get software to work. Forget Pinnacle and Roxio, this is the one to get!!!!

This product cannot be beaten on value for money. It is overloaded with features and if you want great looking productions your search is probably over. Not all features are are straight forward but with a little time and a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, then most things you want will be manageable. If you get more serious a switch to Sony’s full blown package Vegas will be a breeze.

Customer Review: A familiar friend
Given a growing interest in photographing wildlife added to the desire to shoot in continuous frame mode more often than not (vs the cost of film) I realised it was time to “give digital a go”.

I’ve been a long time fan of Canon film SLRs due to fast and reliable focusing, generally consistent metering, common sense ergonomics, and intuitive menuing. And so I expected these brand qualities to be found in the Canon EOS 400D. (Yes a 40D would have been nice, but it was the 400D that fitted my budget.)

I wasn’t disappointed. All the usual controls were located in the usual places, e.g. exposure mode selection dial, command wheel, single frame vs continuous, focus mode etc. If you can find your way through the average mobile phone menu then you will be able to navigate your way through the various software menu tabs, even if some of the options are somewhat unfamiliar. Even though I had never before used a digital camera of any sort, let alone a DSLR, I managed to work out what most of the menu options did. That said, there is no substitute for a read through the manual and I only really found out how to get the best out of the 400D after a read though the manual.

My first time of using the 400D was at the London Wetlands Centre, attached to a Canon 70-200 F4 IS. I was genuinely amazed at the image quality that the 400D’s APS-C sized CMOS sensor is capable of delivering. Viewing the images later on my laptop I could resolve feather filaments on birds, hairs on squirrels. I was gobsmacked. I found it incredible that this much detail could be captured on a CMOS sensor approximately 22×15mm in size.

So why buy the 400D body rather than one of the 400D kits? Simply because the standard zoom lenses supplied in the 400D kits do not do justice to the high quality of the image sensor in the 400D. Sharp lenses they are not - anything but.

My advice?..,

1) Buy the 400D body

2) Attach a really sharp lens of your choice (not a std kit lens)

I’m very pleased indeed that I bought a 400D. I’m especially pleased that I bought a 400D body and handpicked my own choice of razor sharp lenses lenses (Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Canon 70-200 F4L IS).

The 400D is a cracker. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Just make sure you choose a lens that does it justice.

Customer Review: Some problems after initial success
Had this camcorder for a few years now. Served me really well and was impressed until recently. Had almost exact problems as described above - disc cage would open itself prompting a ‘press reset button alert’ and the mechanism started chewing tape. Having just got back from a weeks skiing and having the tape of the holiday rendered useless by dodgy chip commands within the camera making the tape turn and simultaneously eject means that i’m now searching for a new camera and certainly no Panasonic. A shame - it was a great bit of kit until the odd error became a consistent occurence.
Customer Review: Great cam, ruined by fault after fault
I actually won this camcorder in a competition so thankfully I didnt spend any money on it, but the money spent in repair after repair after repair for this thing probably was more than the price anyway! It is great quality, good features, but within a year or so I had a lot of faults with the tape assembly (tapes jamming inside, or tape bay refusing to eject), after having these faults fixed then there were problems with the heads (it needed a head cleaning after almost every use!), then the tape assembly started playing up again, then it had a weird software glitch that kept saying “press reset button” which didnt cure it even when you did, then the heads played up again, then the carriage assembly, then the heads… and so on. After it wrecked a mornings shooting this morning (”please clean tape heads” it said, after I had JUST CLEANED THEM!) I was ready to throw this piece of junk out the window. Maybe I just had a dud ex display model as my prize.. I dont know. I certainly wouldnt buy Panasonic again after all these problems.

Just finished reading this very good guide to video makers of most levels. I found the book to be of great help explining the basics as well as more “pro” tricks of the trade. Maybe a bit too much mateial here for a casual amateur video person like myself, filming my son from time to time.

The book is sadly lacking illustrations and that could really have helped in conveying this material in a more informative way. An update in the desktop editing topic would probably not hurt either.
