Customer Review: Surprised at Picture, no stills really a bonus.
I bought this as a present for my sister and brother in law. As they live abroad I naturally gave it a good test. The idea was for a basic easy to use camcorder. The lack of still features was just one less hassle, they already have a decent digital camera. Well, it turned out to be a doddle to use, but what really surprised me was the picture. On our Panasonic flat screen CRT TV the picture was superb. The ability to play the recorded DVD back straight away, either using a DVD player or through the camera itself is really useful. Once the basics are known there are plenty of features to play around with, but they do not get in the way. The screen and viewfinder worked well, and in sunlight the eyepiece view finder is really useful, it is also easier to hold steady. The only snag was editing as my software, not being the latest, would not take the .VOB files. Anyhow I managed to convert them and edit and found that the image loss from this changing was not anywhere as near as bad as I expected. I subsequently found that current versions of editing software cope with the DVDs directly, so not a problem. Only other faff is the need to prepare RW disks. No big deal and they can be reused. R discs are straight in and certainly worth using for those events you do not not want to accidentally wipe away. Anyhow, as it was a Christmas present it was naturally used at Christmas and the new year, indoor without a lot of light. Again from all the reports I expected this to be terrible. In fact it was the opposite! All in all I was surprised at how well this camera performed. Certainly better than my 12 year old Canon Hi8 which cost over twice this price then!! Most reviews suggest getting the DC100 because of the extra features. I say get the DC95 because it DOES NOT have a load of basically redundant features. I suspect the lack of these ‘extras’ might be helping, but certainly does not hinder the performance of this camera. As for getting the small DVDs. Marks and Spencers own brand. With the groceries in Waitrose.

I recently purchased this camera from Tesco Direct for(?144.95)no one else is currently supplying it cheaper(unless you know otherwise). By the time I’d decided to buy it Amazon were not listing it and the online prices(from other amazon site traders) were higher. Sorry guys.

What a bargain. I already have a Finepix F700 - a brilliant compact camera but lusted after more zoom. I did my research via www.dcreviews.com and other user review sites including the many here on Amazon and starting looking to see who could supply it cheapest.

I’m waiting now for better weather having tested it out in and around home all seems to function OK. It helps that I’m used to Fuji cameras and quickly got up to speed on the various programmes, functions etc;

For what it’s worth if any reading this is thinking about buiyng the S6500 don’t wait any longer - get one quick before they’re all gone. I’ve also bought a UV filter and a camera bag that you must consider buying for this camera. Amazon supply the bag at half the high street price. Mine arrived this morning and it very good quality. It’s a genuine Fuji leather camera bag that cost just ?14.71 including 1st class post. I only ordered it on Saturday afternoon. The camera fits it like a glove.

Solid, well designed and high quality build. A good range of lenses and accessories and spectacularly good picture quality. If you have some knowledge of SLR cameras you can pick this camera up and, from the outset, take very good photographs. Learning how to use some of the facilities takes a while of course but this camera is so good you will surprise yourself at the quality of some of your shots. I agonised over which make and model to go for before buying this one. I have no regrets whatsoever and can recommend it completely. A very, very good piece of kit.

Customer Review: Great Camera but think before you buy
I’m fairly new to Photography but have recently upgraded from a Canon S3 IS to the Nikon D80 and am I glad I did so? You bet. The D80 can produce very high quality images, it’s sturdy and well built and the controls are very sensibly placed. The rear LCD is of very good quality and a good size and the menu system is easy to use and offers a huge number of options to enable you to set the camera up just how you like it. So if you are an enthusiast then this camera should be on you short list but if you just want to take good pictures without becoming too serious then look at the D40 or D40+.

Hindsight is a great thing and there are a couple of points that I would have taken into account had I known better.

My limited experience of Canon cameras indicates that their images are generally sharper straight out of a camera than that of the D80. Also the saturation of colours straight out of a Canon is more intense than out of the D80. So if in general you want to lessen the editing burden so that you can bang out some great snaps then a Canon may make more sense.

One of the D80s advantages is its low noise levels at high sensitivities so if you are going to take a lot of photos in low light conditions or use the lower price and hence slow telephoto lenses than it may have the edge over competitors.

Any vibration reduction resides within the Nikon lenses and not within the D80 body, whereas for Canon cameras it sits within the camera body. This means that if you intend to buy third party lenses (I have a Sigma 50 -500) then you may get some vibration reduction for free from a Canon but not from a Nikon but please check this before you buy. This smacks of Nikon locking people into buying their lenses.

I am becoming aware that post processing is a great leveller when it comes to quality of images, especially if you shoot in RAW format. Therefore I would now tend to concentrate more on purchase cost, usability, reliability and cost of accessories than ‘out of the camera’ image quality as I don’t think there is much in it. So before you buy the camera body look at the price of the accessories and lenses that you will buy with it, and in the future. Also try to handle the cameras on your short list to see which “feels” right for you.

Finally if you are still unsure if a full Digital SLR is for you then in my opinion my Canon S3 IS digital camera takes as good, if not better Jpeg images straight from the camera (even after playing with the D80’s jpeg image quality) and its a third of the price of a standard D80 set up!. Therefore if you’re not going to devote a lot of time to editing your images it may be worth considering a super zoom or digital prosumer model. And don’t forget you can spend the money you have saved to purchase lens converters to give you more telephoto, macro and wide angle capabilities and all for less than the price of a basic D80 lens and camera bundle.

So in conclusion the D80 is a great camera, however if you require a range of lenses such as wide angle, macro and especially telephoto and you haven’t robbed a bank recently then you will probably be looking at third party lenses and it may be that a Canon camera makes more sense. If you already have Nikon lenses then stick with a D80. Otherwise if you think that you may upgrade from the D80 level to a semi pro camera then it is likely that you may want to have the flexibility to choose from a range of manufacturers lenses and hence it could mean again that a Canon with its on board vibration reduction makes sense.

Whatever choice you make if you end up with the D80 you won’t be disappointed.

One last piece of advice, some of the online companies are importing kit that does not have a manufacturer’s warranty so make sure that if this is the case that you get a warranty from the supplier. Happy snapping.

Just posted! Our in-depth review of the Sigma DP1. It’s been a long wait indeed. Customer Review: cracking camera
I have owned this camera for nearly a year now, and I have taken it to Cornwall, Ireland and Wales so far and used it underwater, it hasn’t let me down at all, it is fully water proof, and takes fantastic quality pictures underwater. I am just about to give it the biggest test yet, as we are going to go to Cuba for two weeks, where it will be taken snorkelling every day, not to mention the use on the beach. But I have no worries about doing any of this, I have 100% confidence in it.

I also had trouble deciding between this camera and the olympus. The olympus costs a little bit more and i very nearly went for it because I thought it looked better. Looking back I am positive that i made the right choice.

I wanted a waterproof camera for a sailing trip so the positive reviews of this camera’s performance under natural light conditions swayed me over the Olympus Mju. I was very happy with the results from my outdoor “action” shots but very disappointed with the shots using flash. Taking pics of people when flash was needed was a nightmare due to the ridiculously long time it took for the camera to focus on static subjects. In short, great for outdoor/daylight photography but hopeless for flash portraiture.

Customer Review: Overall good
I bought the camera as a present ready for a holiday. We used the camera for scuba diving and swimming, and as a backup when our ‘normal’ camera ran out of memory. Overall the picture quality was better than expected, and performed almost as well as our 7MP samsung camera both in and out of the water. The camera performed well in the sea, taking relatively good pictures at 10m, and came with appropriate accessories to allow you to hook on or put around your neck if swimming. Also the perfect size to fit in our BCD pockets for scuba.

Drawbacks were that the video on the camera and the buttons. The sound is distorted and the picture is terrible. The buttons on the camera aren’t that user friendly & obvious - it does take a bit of fiddling to understand how to do everything.

Customer Review: Best underwater for the price
A trip to the Red Sea became the test for this little gem. Its water proof, shoots video and still photos up to 10 metres deep, which is deep enough for snorkellers and amateur divers. Nowhere on this camera, in print or in the description does it say “shockproof”. Its a digital camera so I wouldn’t advise giving it to kids. An earlier reviewer seemed somehow surprised that they were smashed to bits when handed over to their kids.

A 1GB memory card was more than enough. I shot about 20 minutes of footage and 184 stills on one card and only changed the batteries once. Buy two memory cards if you intend to shoot more.

The water temperature will affect battery life, since most electronics die in cold weather. So pack a few extra AA’s.

The photos themselves were a little overexposed when used above water and at times in low light they were blurry, due to shutter lag. My best advice is to keep still for two seconds when taking the shot and get some photo editing software to bring out any underexposed colours.

The weight of the camera is both a plus and a minus. If you’re diving or snorkelling in deep water without the strap, it will sink into the abyss if you let go. But this also means that in calmer and shallower waters it can be propped against rocks and on the floor for some good self timed photos and videos. Its does have a tripod mount bracket on the bottom, so purchase a cheap little flexible tripod incase you can’t find flat seabed or rocks. It also means the fish will swim really close to it in curiosity, without you scaring them off.

The screen is a handy size, the menu’s are easy to navigate and the buttons, although a little chunky, make it easier to use if you’re diving with gloves on.

The lack of zoom is a necessity. Adding one would substantially reduce the waterproof depth with all the external moving parts involved. I preferred the extra waterproofing, knowing I wouldn’t be using a tape measure to check my depth every time I went under made me more relaxed about using it.

Switching between video and photo mode is done with one button press, which proved handy when an eagle ray sailed past me at quite a pace and knowing a photo would be too blurry, a quick press produced some great video.

Overall, take spare batteries, an extra card and hold on tight to it when in deep water. Don’t go to a world class diving site without one you won’t find a better video or photo camera for the money.

After reading many positive reviews on the internet and in magazines I bought this camera for my birthday in March. Since then I have taken well over 300 photos and have found the camera very easy to use. The 12x zoom is an absolute godsend,the quality of the photo’s even at the long end of the zoom are excellent. It looks and feels like an SLR with the quality of photos to match. The more I used the camera the more I moved away from the auto mode and found the bracket function extremly useful (this take 3 pictures one which is exposed correctly, one which is underexposed and one which is overexposed). Battery life is not brilliant but not bad either, it is definatley worth while carrying a spare set. Although the camera’s memory is small you can buy a 1GB memory stick for about ?35 (which will store approx 375 pictures). This camera is a must buy . At approx ?250 this is money well spent and I hope you get as much enjoyment from this camera as I have

This camera is brilliant, I had a Sony DSCV3 before this and this camera is as good, but easier to use, the programme and manual modes follow a natural progresion. The steady shot works well particularly at the long end of the zoom. Nicely made and fits in the hand beautifully, in fact more comfortable than my previous Sony. Results are first class, and the batteries last fairly well,although you would be adviesed to carry a spare set. Buy it. Its a cracking camera, if you are more than a point and shoot person. You will not regret it.
