Canon DVK-301 DVD camcorder Starter Kit - camcorder accessory kit

Customer Review: Yes and No
Battery seems fine, dvd-r ok, case is the usual Canon high quality - well made and padded etc. But why so big?? Front pocket on the outside, and inside it’s divided in two by a velcro partition. Once you’ve got the camcorder in one side (in my case, the yummy Canon DC50) there’s over half the space left. Well, once I’d put in a dvd or two, a pack of sandwiches and a flask and the entire works of Shakespeare, there was still space for a 3-piece suite and the cat.

Great if you want all the extra space for accessories etc, but I found it a pain lugging it around so went and bought a bag half the size on the High Street. It takes the camcorder, spare battery, wireless thingie and a spare dvd quite snugly thank you. I can’t send the original back as I tore the packaging to pieces in my excitement when it arrived (I don’t get out much).

As I can get both my camcorder and digital camera in the bigger bag, it will do very nicely next time I go on an expedition to the Antarctic. Otherwise, it’ll probably gather dust. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with it and it is a very good quality item. If you can’t get a foot on the housing ladder, you could do worse than move into it.

Customer Review: JVC GRD-760 - review
In auto mode (if the auto focus works properly) in day light the camcorder has great picture and is pin sharp. But in very bright scenes the colours can be washed out as the camcorder doesn’t automatically get darker to compensate for the brighter scene so you loose detail in what ever your videoing. Battery charging is very simple and easy, you press the Data button and you can instantly see battery life. I love the graphics which show battery life, but the battery doesn’t last that long. Viewing the tape. —————– Move the selector to play mode, viewing the tape is easy to do but what is annoying is you can easily move the joystick to another position and instead of viewing the tape, you switch the camcorder lamp on or if you want to run the tape and normal speed you can do that instead the tape rewinds or fast forwards, that’s annoying and the camcorder should have had buttons inside it for rewinds, fast forwards and play. Did try editing the tape as the joystick didn’t feel to strong. Auto focus ———- Auto focus isn’t fast, even in daylight it some times gets confused and tends to “hunt” around until it gets a lock on (which means you could loose a once in a life time moment) If you point it at the sky to video a plane or helicopter flying in the distance, Auto focus can’t do it as it just hunts around for it. In low light or at night (unless there is bright spot some where) Auto focus is utter rubbish. The macro feature is good but the auto focus lets it down badly as it cant lock on fast enough and when it does, it doesnt stay locked on. i.e. If you video a flower gently moving in the wind with a bumble bee landing on it. As the flower moves in the gentle breeze the auto focus looses focus for a bit and then has trouble locking back on to it. Image stabilisation is great but this only works when the auto focus works properly. If the auto focus is having trouble Image stabilisation wont fix the problem. I want some thing which I can trust 100% of the time and which works with out me worrying about it, this doesn’t work that well and I can’t trust it. Controls ——– Controls are very easy to use and are laid out ok, it took me a short while to master them. Going from 16.9 to 4.3 is at push of a button on the LCD screen and is very easy, the camera works it all out for you. If you take a photo the camera automatically switches off Image stabilisation and 16.9 mode while the photo is being taken and puts them all back when its finished to allow normal video to be taken, that’s great. Once you set the camcorder up, you never need to do it again. Accessing more detailed menus is a real pain as the instruction manual isn’t that clear and controls on the camcorder don’t help much in this way, so it can takes ages to find a menu which adjusts low level stuff such as 12 bit or 16 bit sound. If you want to take picture it will not happen instantly, there is bad shutter lag which again means you loose that once in a life time moment, so better have your SLR camera handy if your going to do this. Also the picture quality on the JVC isn’t that good or clear. It has a great feature where you can take a photo and it automatically saves it to SD card at the same time as you videoing other things, this is good. Low light performance ——————— In auto mode indoors including at night with lights switched on in the room the camcorder gives good images. If go in to the garden at twilight the image is ok-ish. But the auto focus lets it down as it can get confused. Some times the lamp comes on (when you didn’t ask it to), that’s very annoying if your filming some thing like a wild animal which doesn’t need to see you. When you switch to manual and go to twilight mode this isn’t that good as images can be blurry at times as the camera looses focus lock, the one for ultra low light (which has an owl symbol) is a pile of utter kak. Its useless for capturing any thing moving in crisp clear fashion all you see are wavy lines all over the place or blurry moving imagines unless your filming a lit up building then its crisp and clear (so useless for making a movie at night). Best feature of this camcorder is build quality, that is great and has a solid well built quality feel and looks like it will give countless years of service, the LCD hinge looks like its heavy duty stuff and the clasp to keep it next to the camera is a great feature. Conclusion ———- I was really looking forward to this camcorder as I read a few good reviews but after having it for a few days I was very dissappointed by it. The main thing a camcorder needs is a good auto focus system as your recording moving images, this hasnt got it. JVC’s engineers need to give this camcorder more auto focus points = camcorder can “see” better. They also need give the camcorder’s computer better software which will allow it to lock on to a subject and not let it go if it moves. Auto focus and low light performance let this camcorder down very badly. Its no use having a camcorder which looks good, is well made, has a lot of toys to play with and (when the auto focus works properly) has pin sharp images if it cant auto focus and give pin sharp images all the time. The JVC only does it around 60-70% of the time, that’s no good for those once in a life time movies such your kid having her birthday etc or saying those first words or capturing images of you and your brother from New Zealand (who you haven’t seen in 20 years) seeing each other at the airport for the first time you need a camcorder which will record them. If you want a decent camcorder which will give good video, better to look else where. The Samsung VPD375W has very similar features to the JVC GRD760 but the Samsung has better auto focus which 97% of the time locks on and stays locked, the JVC can only do that 60-70% of the time. The Sony HC37 and 45 are similar priced as the JVC and Samsung, These Sonys are great camcorders but don’t have all the features of Samsung or JVC have such as taking pictures and video. The DVD and HDD Sonys have features of the Samsung and JVC but they cost 2-3 times as much. ************************************** Good points :- Looks good and has some chrome around it so has a bling factor. Great solid build quality which will last for years. (if the auto focus works properly) in day light pin sharp video with no grainy-ness. (if the auto focus works properly) good Image stabilisation Easy to use and setup. Bad points :- Auto focus lets it down extremely badly in lot of the areas I filmed in. Overall bad low light performance. JVC eats power so you’ll need to recharge it a lot. Doesn’t come with firewire cable. Washed out colours in daylight. Accessing detailed menus is a real pain. Camcorder manual isn’t that detailed. By e-mail JVC customer service is very slow and getting back to you and most don’t know enough about the product. If you call them its an 0870 number which is very expensive.

Customer Review: Plug Warning
This is a great little Camcorder if you want something that would be easy to carry around, just a little warning, however, that the charger plug is european. It is easy to buy an adapter, i got one from Wilko for ?2.99.

Customer Review: A Great Concept Ruined by Bad Manufacturing
I bought the Camileo Pro as a replacement for my previous budget camera and was particularly interested in it due to the presence of Optical Zoom. Also, the adapter plugging into the camera directly rather than having to charge the battery pack in a separate unit was a great blessing.

Right out of the box, the Camileo is easy to get up and running. It’s just a case of sliding open the hatch at the bottom and putting in the battery pack. This is also where any SD/MMC cards fit.

The interface is somewhat confusing at first but could be grasped with a little experimentation and a study of the manual included on the CD ROM (the printed guide is not informative when it comes to tackling deeper things such as the camera mode options and the ’support’ website is very unhelpful, having no information about the camcorder at all)

The Camileo’s high points centered around its zoom and image capture functions. XviD format recording delivered beautiful resolution wherein the audio and video synchronizes very well. Macro mode is great for getting up close without causing images to blur (though you’ll need a fairly steady hand).

Camera mode took me a little while to figure out since the (slightly badly) translated manual made it sound like you had to press the picture-taking button twice when in fact you have to hold it down to focus the lens, then press it in FURTHER to capture the image.

The biggest letdown was the sound capture quality when in movie record mode, which is fuzzy and barely audible. I could not find an option to adjust it, so I could only assume there wasn’t one.

The voice recording function was okay for any audio notes that need to be made, since sound quality matters little in this case and the sound detection is okay when you’re near to the camera, yet still with fuzz.

While I did not try out the eBook function, the mp3 function did its job with no frills attached and provided great sound quality playback of music files through headphones.

This could have been a wonderful camcorder for high res shots and easy PC editing/sharing. However, the horrible sound issues and slack manufacturing on both the models I tried (one of them arrived with the casing coming apart) did it no favours.

Panasonic NV-GS11B Digital Camcorder [24 x Optical , DV out]
Used Price: ?145.99
Customer Review: Some problems after initial success
Had this camcorder for a few years now. Served me really well and was impressed until recently. Had almost exact problems as described above - disc cage would open itself prompting a ‘press reset button alert’ and the mechanism started chewing tape. Having just got back from a weeks skiing and having the tape of the holiday rendered useless by dodgy chip commands within the camera making the tape turn and simultaneously eject means that i’m now searching for a new camera and certainly no Panasonic. A shame - it was a great bit of kit until the odd error became a consistent occurence.
Customer Review: Great cam, ruined by fault after fault
I actually won this camcorder in a competition so thankfully I didnt spend any money on it, but the money spent in repair after repair after repair for this thing probably was more than the price anyway! It is great quality, good features, but within a year or so I had a lot of faults with the tape assembly (tapes jamming inside, or tape bay refusing to eject), after having these faults fixed then there were problems with the heads (it needed a head cleaning after almost every use!), then the tape assembly started playing up again, then it had a weird software glitch that kept saying “press reset button” which didnt cure it even when you did, then the heads played up again, then the carriage assembly, then the heads… and so on. After it wrecked a mornings shooting this morning (”please clean tape heads” it said, after I had JUST CLEANED THEM!) I was ready to throw this piece of junk out the window. Maybe I just had a dud ex display model as my prize.. I dont know. I certainly wouldnt buy Panasonic again after all these problems.

Customer Review: Canon 350d
I’m only an amature photographer, which is what makes this camera great. It doesn’t have all the fancy bits which you’d expect on a proffesional DSLR. Its quick and simple and there is a wide range of lenses that can fit this camera.
Customer Review: My upgrade from Point & Shoot
4 stars because of VERY minor niggles, otherwise I would have given 5 stars: 1) No ISO display in view finder 2) View finder could be bigger 3) kit lens (18-55) not great (for this reason I had to buy body only and bought Sigma 18-200mm instead) I have had this camera since July 2005 and love it and no regret over my previous Canon powershot S1. I was thinking about upgrading from S1 to S2 but decided I should go straight into DSLR instead of another Point & shoot (P&S) camera which I will outgrow it and eventually need a DSLR anyway. To be honest, it was my third 350D after two failed on me! The full story and comparison to P&S can be read here in my website: http://www.theteh.com/html/p_s_vs_dslr.html Initially I was disappointed with the poor quality control that one could get faulty camera from Canon. I put of buying the 350D after two failed on me until after 3 months, my urge for a DSLR could not stop me from getting my 3rd 350D! There was no other better DSLR at that time (and still is now as of Sept 2005). I personally think that 350D is still better than the Nikon counter part D70/D50 despite that they have a better lens (18-70mm). Here is my review of my 3rd 350D: http://www.theteh.com/html/my_3rd_350d_xt.html There are many sample photos taken with 350D in my website (check out links under ‘Resources’) if you are interested. The first travel photos with my 350D (with Sigma 18-200mm and Sigma 30mm f1.4) was the Croatia gallery: http://www.theteh.com/html/croatia.html DSLR is ‘FAST’ and P&S is ‘SLOW’ to me. This is the single factor that made me chose the 350D instead of another P&S. Second is the shallow Depth of field (DOF) produced by large aperture lenses (eg the Sigma 30mm f1.4, a truly fantastic lens). If speed and shallow DOF are not what you are after, there is no reason to get a DSLR. See pic was taken with the Sigma 30mm at f1.4 to get shallow DOF: http://www.theteh.com/html/borough_market_18.html Hope this review helps you to decided!

Customer Review: DSC-H1
After reading many positive reviews on the internet and in magazines I bought this camera for my birthday in March. Since then I have taken well over 300 photos and have found the camera very easy to use. The 12x zoom is an absolute godsend, the quality of the photo’s even at the long end of the zoom are excellent. It looks and feels like an SLR with the quality of photos to match. The more I used the camera the more I moved away from the auto mode and found the bracket function extremly useful (this take 3 pictures one which is exposed correctly, one which is underexposed and one which is overexposed). Battery life is not brilliant but not bad either, it is definatley worth while carrying a spare set. Although the camera’s memory is small you can buy a 1GB memory stick for about ?35 (which will store approx 375 pictures). This camera is a must buy . At approx ?250 this is money well spent and I hope you get as much enjoyment from this camera as I have
Customer Review: Sony DSC-H1
This camera is brilliant, I had a Sony DSCV3 before this and this camera is as good, but easier to use, the programme and manual modes follow a natural progresion. The steady shot works well particularly at the long end of the zoom. Nicely made and fits in the hand beautifully, in fact more comfortable than my previous Sony. Results are first class, and the batteries last fairly well, although you would be adviesed to carry a spare set. Buy it. Its a cracking camera, if you are more than a point and shoot person. You will not regret it.

Customer Review: register/manual

I have given this camera 4 stars although i have not taken a photograph.

The problems i have encountered is a lousy manual which shows and details top, front and back but not the bottom of the camera. The bottom of the camere is where the battery and usb cables are inserted and battery and SD card is installed but no instructions are given.

Also i found it impossible to register my camera on the Samsung website.

I only hope i do not have any problems with my camera as the above does not give me hope regarding their service department.

Customer Review: Poor Battery!
I agree with the fact that the camera is very small and handy but there are 2 negative points: 1. some picts come out blurred, you have to be very steady when taking pict unless you are using the function “children”. 2. I am not happy with the battery: it takes hours to charge and it doesnt last long, especially if you want to see the pict while you are still on holiday. Twice I had the not nice surprise of being without battery while on holiday…and I hadnt used the camera that much!

Customer Review: “Shooting some animals”
Firstly I chose this model because I wanted a viewfinder on my camera and secondly because I wanted to be able to take widescreen photos to ‘fit’ my computer screen otherwise I would probably have kept what I already was using, Sony DSC-72. Anyone familiar with Whipsnade will know you can walk miles and the animals will nearly always be on the opposite side of the paddock, but I was lucky when I went to test out the camera - the lions were sunbathing by the viewing screen and focus and colours were amazingly good with it set on auto, detail was excellent especially as I had to shoot through the glass. Being that close to a lion family was somewhat awesome. The camera focused well through the massive bars of the elephant paddock and picked out the new baby trying to hide under its Mother better than I had expected. All sorts of animals and birds “were shot” that day and almost all photos were up to a reasonable standard, for an OAP amateur that is What I wasn’t so pleased with was when trying out the movie clips I had made, I couldn’t find a way of deleting a wobbly bit at the beginning of one. Trimming seems to only be available for still photos. I was also surprised to find a flock of flamingoes walking towards me kept going out of focus. Maybe they were so brilliant in the sunshine it affected the monitoring. My previous camera allowed a divide and delete option, no hunting through the camera manuals for this one, paper or on screen even mentioned the subject that I could see. In the end I managed to find an editing prog. on my laptop - DVgate where I could trim and convert and send back to add to my DVcamera tape which I had also taken to write the whole lot to disc. The controls on the camera are rather close together and move very easily, making double checking before you shoot that you haven’t slipped the mode dial round when taking the camera out of your pocket a good idea. The screen is very clear and of a reasonable size if you want to take macro. I have bought a 4GB MS pro duo to allow plenty of movie recording if the occasion demands. Nice little camera, lightweight and easily slides in your pocket and the additional case which I bought from Amazon along with the MS pro duo has a belt loop which undoes to become a carrying handle if you so wish. Rated at 4 star because I feel contrary to my expections there are less options on it than my previous camera, the photos are more than satisfactory.
Customer Review: Good camera fair price
My Camera arrived on time ready for Christmas. I had two emails confirming the camera had been sent and the expected day of arrival. This gave me reassurance as I have had many bad experiences when ordering gifts from the internet. The camera arrived in perfect condition. The camera has very good photo quality and relatively easy to use. The only negative is that there is a short delay before the camera takes the photo. Overall very good and probably the best camera within its price range.
