Customer Review: Great Value For Money Easy To Use Camcorder
Very simple to use, does most things ‘out of the box’ with no need for much user input beyond switching it on, pointing & pressing the REC button (its in red for maximum ease of spotting!)

There are the usual options to change things like effects for how pictures look etc but really this is for people who just want to video, with some simple menu options which are quick to learn.

Its light, small & fits nicely into one hand. Its quite well made too.

Couple of points to note: there is no editing software included (use Windows Media Centre or Photo Gallery) nor is there any cable to link your camcorder to your PC.

Both these omissions are unusual & seem a bit cheap of SONY, for which I’ve deducted 1 star.

You do get a short ‘how to shoot videos’ DVD which - once you ignore the childish & annoying cartoon ‘guide’ - is actually quite useful.

(the lack of any bundled cassette is normal industry practise)

Using a firewall cable I’ve found the video transfer to my PC (running Windows VISTA) painless & fairly quick.

All in all a good buy which I purchased from Debenhams in Birmingham for just ?130 a couple of weeks ago.

Customer Review: fantastic
bought one of this, mostly because of it’s size and also the connectivity to the pc.arrived on time, very easy to operate.

Sony DCR-PC350E Digital Camcorder
Customer Review: Small But Perfectly Formed?
…well almost. I’ve had this camcorder for about one month now, and the performance is incredible given its size. I wont talk much about the (formidable) list of editing/dubbing/effects options available, suffice to say that once shot, you can do all the usual stuff with your footage to enhance it. Instead, I want to talk about the basic quality of the camcorder you’ll be spending your many ???’s on. Its video quality is quite simply astounding. The colour reproduction is very accurate, thanks to that Primary Colour Filter, very neutral, very true to life. The CCD produces resolutions that are easily comparable to the very best digital TV/tuner systems, and not far short of pre-recorded DVD standard. Using interlaced encoding; movement is very smooth, with no blurring of lines or colour bleed, and no discernable digital “artefacts”. I really like the 16:9 widescreen mode, which uses an optical method, giving a genuine wider-angle view, and capturing the full frame, without the pixel loss associated with digital “cropping”. The progressive mode at 25 frames/sec looks choppy as you’d expect, and to my mind is a bit of a gimmick, useful only if you plan to capture still frames from your videos. Why you would want to do that, given the performance of this machine as a 3 megapixel stills camera, I don’t know. Talking of stills, this camera really does do a good job, unlike just about all other camcorders. Having seen test photos from its predecessor, the PC330, which I was thinking of buying, the results from the PC350 are much less grainy and benefit from the same colour fidelity as the videos. The sound recording quality is both a revelation and a disappointment at the same time. It’s the Achilles heel of this camcorder, because on the one hand, the microphone is very sensitive, and with the 16bit sampling, gives a wonderfully accurate and detailed stereo soundstage with no clipping in loud situations such as at a party, but on the other hand is so sensitive that it picks up the tape motor noise if shooting in very quiet situations. The problem is not that the motor is loud, it’s that the camera is so small and the mic therefore in such close proximity to the internal workings. Ok, most of the time you just won’t notice it, nevertheless, for this reason alone, I’m knocking a star off its overall rating. The ergonomics are fine and button layout is logical. However, if you have hands like dinner plates, this is not the camcorder for you. Battery life, I think is pretty good, giving 90 minutes or thereabouts, continuous shooting, with the supplied NP-FF51. I edit videos on my computer, and the docking station is great for uploading footage/stills while charging the battery. Conclusion: Really glad I got this camera, it’s a beauty! Don’t be put off by the tape noise, that’s a minor quibble, and a fault on many camcorders.
Customer Review: Pretty good!
Its amazing to think that in the palm of your hand you could have something so powerful! I thought that when you sell things like this, only movie directors bought them!

JVC GZ-MG21EK Everio Digital Media Camcorder
Used Price: ?179.99
Customer Review: A VERY CHEAP HDD DIGITAL CAMCORDER.
I must confess that I was shocked to find such an advanced camcorder at such a low price. I have had two Sony video 8 camcorders over the past 15 or so years and there bulk means limited use. My old Video 8 now has problems so I never realised I could afford a HDD camera. The Jvc with it’s 20GB HDD gives a fantastic recording all of which can be edited on the P.C . I have yet to try this out so I can’t comment as yet but I can’t wait to give it a go. There are three issues that let this camera down however - one being the poor LCD screen that’s difficult to watch while recording due to it’s viewing range. The second being the poor battery life which is at best 50 minutes from the standard 7200 MHN. The third being the siting of the control joystick located on the flimsy LCD screen. I feel this is a stupid place to put this as the screen is liable to get broken. But overall this is still a great very compact camcorder for the price and well worth it.
Customer Review: Oh deary me.
When I first saw this camera on Amazon I honestly thought I’d found the dream camera. The price was good for the features that were offered. However, I soon realised that the JHV GZ-M21E was far from a dream-like… As you’ll have read in other reviews, Amazon messed up and like many other customers I was sent a European version. The plug didn’t fit with any of the voltage converters I tried, but luckily I had access to a shaver socket and used that to charge. We did call them, but - long story short; Amazon’s customer service is pathetic. This is Amazon’s fault so I won’t base the product rating on my bad experience, but unfortunately for JVC, this small piece of awful machinery hardly does itself justice as it is. The video quality isn’t great, but I only used it for YouTube videos so I didn’t complain. The focus was awful - when holding the camera perfectly still it would spontaneously blur, ruining many movies. I’m not sure what gave JVC the fantastic idea of making the camera record into some obscene unique JHV-created format which is only compatible with their FOUL and PESTILENT software, but I can only assume copius amounts of crack. The worst thing about this camera? The battery life. It was awful. I got about 2-3 hours of battery life at a time, even if I just left it on without recording. Conveniently, there was a catalogue of JVC products in the box which included ludicrously priced battery upgrades. And hence, I plan to shout at Amazon until I get a refund, and then buy myself a Sony HD Handycam, the likes of which I’ve heard endless streams of positivity about.

Customer Review: Wide angle lens, versatile, great price
Have had the P50 for a few months, and taken over a 1000 shots in a variety of conditions. My comments: 1) The photos. The camera uses the smallest chip around 1:1/2.5 - don’t know what that means, just that it’s Very small. With 8m pixels crammed on this sensor, low light non-flash shots are quite noisy. However, flash shots are near enough perfect, distance and close up outdoor shots also give good detail. Usable dynamic range across highlights and shadows - Managed to keep the balance in bright outdoor shots without blowing out the blue sky or plunging the shaded foreground into gloom. All photos benefit with a bit of sharpening in photoshop (Pics straight out of camera are a little soft, which is a Nikon P series trait apparantly), but still perfectly usable straight out the unit. Exposure hard to fool, but white balance you need to keep an eye on (especially in custom, which if combined with flash gets you a blue hued photo). Overall very pleased with picture quality. 2) The design. Easy to hold, looks good finished in all-black. Slightly slimmer and feels better put together than the Canon A570IS (4x zoom but no wide-angle). Uses AA batteries - sucks them dry quite quickly so recommend getting decent rechargeables as soon as you can. Looks a bit like it’s elder siblings P5000/P5100 from the front, round the screen back it has a more conventional layout - most functions easily accessed through a combination of the rotating dial at the top of the camera (different modes) and the menu key on the back, which depending on the mode you’re using gives you access to a wide range of set-up options. Menu system not totally intuitive, but makes a good stab at it. One thing about the body, if you hold the camera with both hands whilst using the flash, need to be careful not to let a finger stand proud even slightly over the top of the body above the flash - it’ll result in a shaded area at the top of your photo. Never had this before on any other camera, but it’s just a design thing you have to adapt to. Viewfinder for emergency use only. 3) Functionality. Full manual on cd-rom - I still do hanker after the A5 or A6 sized manuals of old. Bought this camera because of it’s combination of wide-angle lens, some manual flexibility, things like face detection and (electronic) image stabilisation all at c?150 or so. It’s now down to around ?120. Had tried and returned a Olympus FE-290 the week before because it was the same price, with wide-angle, but didn’t have any of the additional functions mentioned above. The electronic image stabilisation (e-VR) works ok at the wide-angle end of the zoom, with some surprising hand held results in low light, but effectively useless once you start to zoom in. You need to get to the P5000 level before they bring in the superior, optical/mechanical image stabilisation - which is a bit cheap of Nikon, since Canon uses a mechanical system on their cameras in this price range. In manual mode you can adjust shutter speed (8secs to 1/1000) and aperture (only two options). Image size can be adjusted too (in all modes), including 16:9 mode that’s a decent 3200×1800 resolution (about 5.8mp - quite a few cams have 16:9 resolution at about 2mp). For some modes you can select image colour (softer, vivid etc) which I’ve kept mostly on vivid, for more dramatic photos. White balance includes manual adjustment which I find most useful for lower light flash free shots - noisy but usable, and keeps the yellow cast away. WB also has flash option, which works at keeping colours non-washed out in a flash photo. Flash intensity can be adjusted, which can make a surprisingly big difference to your final shots. Face detection quite skittish(like most 1st gen FD, whatever the camera). Nikon also includes Best Shot Selector (BSS) which takes a sequence of shots and you choose the best, and D-Lighting, which is an in-camera exposure function that brightens and brings out detail in shadows. Metering has four options including Spot AF, and continuous shot has five options - in the latter case continuous, BSS, multi-shot are unavailable if Noise Reduction is switched on. Auto focus has 4 area options including face priority, centre, and manual adjustment, the latter which allows you to frame the shot whilst moving the focal point onto your primary subject. And finally. Overall a wide range of functions that encourages you to explore the commendable limits of this camera. Wide angle coupled with functions coupled with competitive price make this a winner. Slow focusing and post-shot processing (even w an SDHC card) limits your moving-subject type shots. Battery indicator only shows up when you’re about out of juice which seems a backward step in technology (I’ve got an old Sony p-120 which could tell you the battery life to the minute). This is really a 4.5 star review as the last two points only take half a star away.
Customer Review: nikon p50
a brief non-technical review- we bought this camera because we are both artists looking for a pocket sized notebook/travel camera. After three nikon digital cameras this one was a welcome replacement- it ticks all the boxes- it’s light, but feels solid, good positive dial functions and a very nice layout. good screen size and easy menu, fantastic crop function means it doesn’t stop being creative when the picture has been taken. The simple anti-shake allows clear photos even when flash isn’t allowed or appropriate. Easy batteries-AA rechargeables, or emergency from any corner shop. Wide angle lens for landscape. stunning macro. Great large scale prints, no purple fringing, It looks like a camera, it works very hard, it feels as if it will carry on for as long as we need it, and print quality is what we expect from nikon. At this price I plan to buy another, because we don’t want to share.

Canon PowerShot A650 IS Digital Camera - Silver (12.1MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 2.5″ LCD

Canon PowerShot A650 IS Digital Camera - Silver (12.1MP, 6x Optical Zoom) 2.5″ LCD
Canon proudly presents the PowerShot A650 IS, a worthy successor to the famous A640. Canon?s cameras have always stood out from the crowd, but this camera takes that concept to a new level thanks to its powerful zoom and efficient optical image stabiliser! The Power Shot A650IS is fully equipped with an impressive 12.1 megapixel sensor and a 6x optical zoom, allowing you to reframe and print your creations without losing any quality. Its sensitivity has been increased to 1600 ISO to limit the use of the flash indoors. Focusing has never been easier, thanks to the face detection system which is great for your group photos. Among its other features, you?ll find a large 2.5? TFT screen, an amazing 1 cm macro mode and a range of creative functions, such as the My Colours settings and different shooting modes like programme, aperture and speed priority. There are even manual modes to give you total control over your camera?s settings. The PowerShot A650 IS from Canon beats the competition on all fronts and brings digital photography within your reach.

Customer Review: Practical priorities but still GREAT pictures!
I’ve been using the Powershot A 650 IS pretty constantly for the last 8 weeks and must say I didn’t expect such quality results. My initial reasons for purchasing the 12.1 pixel compact was the swivel screen (not to watch from different angles but to put out of harms way when not working), the optical viewfinder for sunny days (when the screen can’t be seen anyway)and the use of AA batteries instead of the expensive ion ones. I was aware of the experts’ reservations; a tricky battery compartment (which I don’t have a problem opening), bulkiness and high noise levels at faster ISO settings. All these seem a small price to pay for a camera that challenges the specs of a lot of DSLRs let alone other compacts. The colour and sharpness is wonderful and the flexible controls allow you to get great pictures in “most” situations. I find the camera VERY comfortable to hold and easy to manipulate. I’ve even had nice results with the 3200ISO mode when everything else failed late at night. The battery life(with rechargeable AAs) is superb and the detail allows you to blow up photos well beyond A4 size.

Altogether, I’ve found the camera to be a thoroughly satisfying purchase

Customer Review: Great camera
After visiting many websites and looking at reviews I decided to go with the A650. OK I didn’t need the 12MP but as a buddy photographer I liked the fact that I could point and shoot or if I was feeling creative I could switch to fully manual, just like the digial SLRs but without the bulk (and expense).

I’m really pleased with the shots that I’ve taken so far and the performance of the camera is great - quick start up, low shutter lag, etc. I really like the fact that I can move the screen to different angles and the video playback is good.

My only concern is the build - it does feel a bit plastic however very robust.

I really do recommend for anyone that is looking for something a little more than a point and shoot.

The Crumpler Crisp-e 950 is a good camera bag

Digital Astrophotography: A Guide to Capturing the Cosmos
List Price: ?18.50
Amazon Price: ?12.03
Used Price: ?9.32
Customer Review: excellent reference for those starting out
Great starting point for anyone interested in starting up with astrophotography. This book starts off (as you’d expect) with the basics - what to look for in a telescope, then moves onto sections on how to take photos with everything from a digital compact, a webcam(!), a dSLR then finally an astronomical CCD camera. Each section is further broken down into the same subsections: what kind of photos you can take with the particular type of camera, pros and cons of using it, buying tips, how to take the photos and finally how to process them. This book is packed with excellent reference photos, and covers the basics of astrophotography in a lot of detail, and finishes off with an extensive list of links to appropriate software, astronomy links, camera and telescope manufacturers, and books. A must-buy for anyone considering taking photos of the night sky. Be warned though, once you’ve read it, you’ll be outside on many a cold night!
