Mustek DV520C Digital Camcorder/Camera+Free 1GB SD
Mustek DV520C digital camcorder is an ideal gift for children who want to get into digital photography. It is very cheap but fairly versatile, it takes upto 10MP digital photo (5MP natural resolution, 10MP by interpolation), and it records VGA quality movies with sound. In addition it also plays MP3 music and MPEG-4 movies.
Customer Review: Nasty
in the flesh it looks even cheaper and nastier; its cheap plastic components are not well screwed together either. Buttons are floppy and have an unpleasant feel in use - you’d actually think it was a plastic 50p toy, or came as a gift with a happy meal - or possibly from a christmas cracker. My 12 year old daughter, for whom it was bought as a present, threw it back at me, saying she wouldnt be seen dead with it.

Customer Review: Tough, Reliable, great optics
In this day and age why buy an older technology CCD HDV camcorder when there are others with newer CMOS optics? Well right now, the CMOS technology is good but it isn’t great, especially in low light. The older triple CCD equipped cameras like the HDR-FX1 and the HVR-Z1 work better in lower light than the newer FX7s. I’ve had an FX1 for a while now and must say that I’m very happy with my purchase. The quality of material I’ve shot is excellent using Sony HDV tapestock and the playback is top end. The camera manual controls are a dream with an excellent zoom ring close enough to the focus ring for the nimble fingered to use one handed, but far enough apart for a separate focus puller to use without getting in the way. The weight of the unit is good, not too much for hand held use. I like the top mounted view screen like the Z1’s and I’ve found the on board mic to be surprisingly good. I would suggest the purchase of a NP970 (or equivalent) extended life battery - why do Sony ship the orderinary one at all? along with a decent tripod. I’ve used bith Vinten and Manfrotto tripods with this camera and to be honest can’t decide which I like the best, but make sure you get one with a good fluid head suitable for HDV camcorders. The audio in is a 3.5mm minijack but a Beathtek adapter will add a couple of XLR connectors without the expense of having to stump up for a Z1 camera instead. A great camcorder and I’ll have to be seriously impressed with something else before I replace it.
Customer Review: Some time later…
This is a follow up to my main review below. After a year of usage I've at last got hold of Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and its native HDV support. In other words I can use Windows Media Player to view my FX1 captures in full 1920×1080 resolution for the first time and it's glorious. I've been watching some night time footage I shot in Tokyo last year and the ability of the FX1 to work in low light and to capture the intense colours of the neon signs is amazing. The clarity of the images is everything that I hoped for and fully justifies the cost of the camcorder. A friend said, when viewing my samples: “It's like looking at a fairly good photo… and then it moves!!!” Finally: bear in mind that the FX1 is only implementing 75% of the 1080i standard resolution (anamorphic 1440 x 1080) because of the storage limitations of the mini-DV cassettes. I'm amazed by the FX1 output so full broadcast 1080i will be stupendous. The future is coming…!

Panasonic - NV-GS60 - Mini DV Camcorder
Customer Review: Great for the Price
As I wasnt sure how much I would use a camcorder I just wanted reasonable images without paying a fortune. After its first use I was pleasantly surprised by the results. Images outside are great although they do suffer from being a bit grainy in poor light. A small price to pay for paying such a small price! Transferring to PC is easy though you do need to buy a firewire cable but this costs about ?5. It comes with cables to play your images on a TV though. The cam comes with a 45 min battery so I purchased another one - reasonably priced direct from Panasonic although you can risk it and buy cheaper unbranded ones. The cam is very easy to hold steady as it is well designed to fit the palm. Sound quality is suprisingly good too. Its first use was at an international rugby match and the bands playing the national anthems is well recorded. Controls are also well placed and easy to use. It hasnt got the depth of functions though can be used in auto or manual mode. But we just want to press a button for it to record. So if you just really want a cam that is very good at point and shoot and you do not want to pay a fortune for it but want one that has a good name and is well designed you could do alot worse than go for this one!
Customer Review: Excellent value
Just bought this from my local Sainsbury’s who have these for ?118 - just a little cheaper than Amazon at the moment 1/03/08. The value is excellent - understand this is not a top of the line High definition camcorder it is a basic easy to use, easy to carry piece of kit. Certainly very easy to get both this and a small digicam in the same easy to carry bag. The picture quality is more than acceptable - though noticeably poorer than the previous Panasonic camcorder I had but that cost a lot more than a ?120!!. It is certainly better than indicated in a previous review claiming it is worse than a mobile phone - I’m afraid that is very wide of the mark. Works a treat with the video capture function included in Windows Vista though for some reason I get an irritating sound ‘click’ right at the end of the capture. It only happens there not on any stops or pauses in the video - it is not on the tape itself so I am working on the basis this is a PC/Vista issue and nothing at all to do with the camera. It is easy to edit out using Windows movie maker so its no big deal. Note as in common with many other camcorders you do not get a Fire-wire cable included - they don’t cost the earth, even when buying a good quality one so I don’t really count this as an issue. I had one anyway so not a problem for me. The controls are a breeze, particularly the thumb operated joystick from which you control all the main functions. The only neg I can find is the start up time when in recording mode - it does seem to take longer than my previous Panasonic model which served me well for nearly ten years. I am amazed at how small camcorders have become - even DV ones like this - my previous one was significantly bulkier than this dinky little thing. Any smaller and I would think it would be quite difficult to handle - the size is perfect for my largish hands. You also get a number of pre-set scene options which is handy or you can just point and shoot. All in all I am very happy so far - it is early days but I remain a big fan of Panasonic products which I general find to be durable and reliable - I’m hoping for the same with this.

Customer Review: a must have!
i was looking to buy a new sony camcorder and saw this little thing with an HD embossed on its tiny little body. it’s expensive but wow! the pictures were stunning! shots perfectly on a 6.1 megapixel format. High definition, crystal clear videos with a 5.1 surround sound! that is truly amazing! but please, think twice before buying this one if you don’t have an HD ready plasma or LCD as it might disappoint you during playback on a tele which is not HD ready because this is what your paying for, the High Definition. hope you will enjoy yours like i do.

Customer Review: Don`t look any further!
This is my first camcorder, which after about 4 weeks of serious research I can say that I am really really pleased.First things first this camcorder is so easy to use it`s unbeleivable, very easy to edit your work and it also comes with a handy docking station with a one touch burn to cd function.Forgot to mention that you get bundled an editing software cd. I bought my camcorder on the basis that I wanted it to perform well in low light, also good editing and ease of use.It has excelled in all three.Everything a beginner needs. This camcorder has it and more.Don`t be put of by these proffesional reviews that to me seem like they are looking for perfection all the time. This is a neat bit of kit, and I have more yet to explore. Love it!!!!
Customer Review: Great piece of kit!
I bought this to replace a mini-DV Sony handycam. Although the video resolution isn’t quite as good when played back via the camera itself, once you have edited your tape/disc onto DVD for ease of viewing (which we all need to do at some point) I can see no difference at all. Some of the pro reviews are critical of the video performance, which may be so if viewed on a PC, but on a widescreen TV the picture is ace! This is a very easy camera to operate, & very compact too - much more so than my PC330 which was quite bulky. Still images are only 1-mega pixel, but are fine for snaps at 6×4, & come out nice and bright. Anyone wanting quality stills should use a digital still camera or possibly buy the more expensive & bulkier Sony SR90. The only negative for the SR50 is that it doesn’t have a viewfinder, just an LCD screen, but it’s bright & you can shade it with your hand in bright sunlight.

Customer Review: Great idea, execution left wanting
The concept, styling, weight, size and battery life are fantastic, but there are aspects of this product that leave you flat. This type of camcorder is the way of the future for all of us who want quick family holiday snaps and especially, videos. Tiny size, incredibly low weight, long battery life allow you to literally put it in your top pocket and when necessary, take it out and start shooting in a few seconds. The SHQ video would be great if I could view it on anything but the TV. Check that your PC’s video card has codecs and is up to the task of rendering HD H264 MPEG4 video in real-time before you set off! My work PC was almost up to the task and I can say the quality looked good, even though the video hiccupped. The 7.1MP camera produces good pics, but the video, which is its prime function has a few issues. First and foremost is the autofocus. It is incredibly slow to auto-focus. It has a face-tracker function, but the model for this must have been a short-sighted hedgehog, because even in good light it takes way too long to focus. Then there’s the auto-focus motor noise which, while low in level, is audible in quiet surroundings. I find it unforgiveable to compromise great electronics with el-cheapo mechanics. On the issue of mechanics, the power and SD slot cover are flimsy, and just waiting to be broken. The camcorder’s performance is not wonderful in low light (e.g an incandescant bulb at night), but I guess I expected this, and so I wasn’t disappointed by it’s performance; in fact, I was a little surprised it did so well. I haven’t tried the still-flash yet, but it looks a little dinky. Overall, this is a potentially fantastic product, provided Sanyo get their act together on the focusing issue. Would I buy it again? Hmmmm, maybe I’d wait for the next model, but then I’d be missing all those shots of the kids that I would never bother taking with my “grown-up”, kilo-plus, house-brick-sized, digi-camcorder.

How to Do Everything with Your Digital Camera, Fourth Edition (How to Do Everything)
Customer Review: How to Do Everything with Your Digital Camera 2/e
A great and easy to follow book ( like all in the series)

A shame it will go out of date quickly as cameras become more powerful

Customer Review: The title says it all
I wish that I had found this book when I first started digital photography. Although I had been using a 35 mm film camera for many years, Cannon SLR plus lenses, there are differences and it is finding the differences and how to use them to best advantage that is important. This book spells it all out for novice and more advanced users alike. Most of the requisite skills are well covered. There are one or two omissions, whether by accident or design I do not know, but they do not detract from the book as a whole. If you have just started out on the digital experience, or are contemplating so doing, this is the book that is worth buying. There are many books at far higher prices that just do not cover the subject matter so well. As has been said in another review, it also covers Paint Shop Pro and this is a far more likely purchase than Photoshop, costing as it does, merely a fraction of the price of Photoshop and for many people, just as good. My advice is, buy it. you will not regret it.
