Digital Photography Beyond the Camera: Expert Photoshop and Digital Know-how for Top-quality Images and Prints

Digital Photography Beyond the Camera: Expert Photoshop and Digital Know-how for Top-quality Images and Prints

Customer Review: Super ! How did I do without it ???
For this price, this lens is a steal. I checked a lot of reviews and searched a lot of articles in my endeavors to buy a prime lens. I have a D40 and was apprehensive that this would not work with a D40. Luckily and happily, my apprehensions never came to life. The lens works very well with a D40 also…although you need to focus manually. I am a relative novice and it did not strike me that when you mount the lens on a D40, it will always ask you to set the aperture to the highest value. At first I thought that once I set the aperture to the highest, I would be unable to use f/1.8 - what I did not realise was that the moment you mount this on a D40, the aperture opens to the lowest value ( fully open f/1.8 ) Low light pics are a beauty with this lens, even at ISO 400. I did some candle light photography and I was amazed that I could click photos at ISO 800 without a tripod !!! If you dont already have this lens, go and get one. If you are at a party and need to take pics, you will NEVER need flash !!!
Customer Review: Essential kit
Firstly this lens is as sharp as a tack, and the image quality could not be better if they tried. If you’re looking for results then you’ll be hard pressed to find a better 50mm lens at ANY price. The build quality is very plasticky. Is this a problem? No. How much rough’n'tough do you expose your equipment to on a daily basis? Besides, the compact build is so tight that I doubt this lens would break if you dropped it! The autofocus is surprisingly loud for such a small lens, but it is snappy and always gets it right! I’d highly recommend this lens to everyone, its a fantastic addition and at such a low price it’s definitely worth more than you pay for it!

Customer Review: Digital
This is certainly not a book that could be described as Nikon for idiots or anything remotely close. There is an assumption that you have a reasonable knowledege of digital photography before you begin, which is a bit surprising as Nikon market this camera for the beginner. That said the book is not difficult to follow, providing you have the base knowledge, but not the sort of book for bedtime, it wakes you up!

Customer Review: all you need to know about nikon-at least most of it
I’ve been thru many of the Nikon books - none of them has that much information, with a great index for quick reference. Some stuff is missing, who’s to blame with all the yearly updates. The only solution is: keep on going Moose!
Customer Review: Very detailled insight of Nikon world.
I have found in this book very important informations not available anywhere else, specially in the speedlight section. Thanks a lot, Moose.

Nikon proudly presents the long-awaited successor to the D70: the D80! The D80 has a new 10.2-megapixel CCD image sensor and an improved response time of just 18 ms instead of 20 ms, and uses image processing technology that operates at 12 bits per channel instead of 8. It?s compatible with SD cards instead of CompactFlash and has a 10.2-megapixel image sensor, as well as a new image processor for capturing even the tiniest details. It accelerates performances on all levels, ensuring low energy consumption so you can take more photos on a fully charged battery, and comes with a 2.5? LCD screen and 0.94x zoom so you can focus easily. The D80 includes a host of advanced features such as the built-in flash control mode, the image touch-up menu and slideshow creation programmes with different music transition and fader effects (Pictmotion), so you can make your creations your very own. In short, the Nikon D80 has been specially designed for photo fans, traditional SLR camera owners or anyone looking to start out in the world of compact or bridge digital photography.

Customer Review: Excellent Prosumer Digital SLR
In short, an excellent choice if you’re an enthusiatic amatuer who can’t justify the cost of a professional DSLR. I bought this camera to replace my ageing Minolta film SLR, having promised myself that I’d wait until good quality DSLRs broke the 10 mega-pixel barrier at a reasonable price before parting with my cash. Minolta stopped producing SLRs a few years ago (replaced by Sony I think, which is an unknown quantity to me), so I decided to look at other brands. I’ve had a Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot digital for some years which I’ve been very pleased with, so I plumped for a Nikon DSLR. As an amatuer, I wanted a camera that is versatile, reasonably portable and of high quality. I also wanted something that would allow me to explore Digital SLR fully (point-and-shoot digital isn’t the same of course, and the fast feedback you get with DSLR compared to film is wonderful). Given my budget and the current Nikon range, this came down to either the D80 or the D200. The D200 is very impressive, but I just couldn’t justify the extra ?300 or so that it costs and decided this was best spent on a better lense. Not only that, but the D80 is very close in specification to the D200. For me, the additional features of the D200 were just not worth the extra ?300 given what I will use the camera for. So I went with the D80 and the excellent Nikon 18-200 VR lense and have not been disappointed. Nikon don’t offer this body/lense combination as a kit, so I had to buy separately which of course ups the cost somewhat, but it’s worth it I think. Most of my images stay on the PC and the exceptional ones get printed up to A3 format for display. Resolution wise, the D80 seems to handle this with ease. The camera is a dream to use, and in the short time that I’ve had it I’ve had excellent results. As others have said, the camera oozes good quality, and this applies not only to the finish/controls but also under the hood as well. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Customer Review: I love this camera!
I love this camera, having had it for almost one year. Yes, it is a bit heavier than similar offerings from Canon, Sony and Olympus but this is due to it’s build quality! Dslrs are not pocket cameras! They will have to take some rough and tumble and the extra weight helps the camera balance when used with larger lenses. I particularly like the extra bright viewfinder, very important and much superior to the Canon Eos 400D. I bought this camera with the excellent 18-200vr and really love this lens. This is not a lens review but remember, when you buy a Dslr, you are buying into a camera range. It’s essential to look at what accessories are available and Nikon do not disappoint in this area. There are 11 autofocus points which should be enough for anyone. Noise control at 400 iso is excellent and is available up to 3200 but is very noisy, so only for emergencies. The D80 has a whole host of in-camera adjustments for adjusting images although I prefer to do this in Photoshop. I think I will be happy with this camera for a few years yet. This does everything I want it to (takes sharp, low noise, well exposed pictures) and of course, reading the manual is essential to make the best use of all the features but it still isn’t difficult for someone used to film SLRs to pick this camera up and start shooting straight away. I have bought the SB600 flash which is superb and the 50mm 1.8 lens which is superb for low light. The camera has reduced in price and the weight is not an issue unless you’re a total wimp! I bought this instead of the Canon 400D as it has better build quality, a better viewfinder and spot metering, Canons usually only have a partial metering option. It is very comfortable to hold, whereas it’s competitors can feel too small and plasticky. And then there is the 18-200VR lens. Canon have nothing like this and as most people have concerns about lugging lenses around, this is an almost do-it-all solution! The Canon 40D has great build quality but in reviews appears to have no better image quality than the 400D and comes with a hefty price tag.

Lowepro Apex 5AW Digital Camera Pouch - Black
The Apex Collection are the first of Lowepro?s smaller pouches to be fitted with an All Weather Cover which can be pulled over the bag if you get caught out in bad weather.
List Price: ?16.00
Amazon Price: ?10.83
Customer Review: Excellent
I’ve used Lowepro pouches and cases for years, and this is definitely the best pouch series yet. It’s very small, but is well padded and you can use a neck strap or belt attachment. I prefer the belt bit myself, as that fits nicely on to a rucksack waistbelt, or even your trouser belt. It’s a rugged little thing and does the job perfectly. I use it with an Ixus 75, which fits snugly, including a spare battery and card.
Customer Review: The Business!
I had a Lowepro case for my old Camera and it was good - but this one is even better! I sell these often with Cameras and it makes people laugh when I demonstrate the waterproof cover for it that folds out from a flap on the bottom. It is sturdy, rugged and my ixus 70 sits snugly in it with room for cards and additional batteries. If black isn’t your colour it is also available in blue.

Customer Review: Great starter manual
This is exactly what I was looking for, a book which taught me the basics then applied them to different situations. I feel a lot more confident playing around with the settings on my camera and my photography has improved as a result. I like the way he has taken a photograph for each subject and then explained the settings on the right hand side. After reading the first two chapters I was able to cover up the settings, look at the photograph and predict what he had used. In no time at all I was grasping the logic and gaining confidence. A lovely book for beginners. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I also like the fact that he has explained commonly made errors in composition and lighting and illustrated the flawed results on the same page. I am starting to think about composition in a new way too. My photography skills were in a rut, this book has changed that.
Customer Review: Great for beginners and enthusiastic amateurs!
This is great if you’re keen but need a bit of practical guidance and some inspiration. This books shows you some inspirational shots as guidance and shows you the set up (eg where to stand, where to place your subject etc…) and tells you the ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc… for many of the pictures. It is jargon-free, easy to read and split into useful chapters, including portriats, moving objects, taking pictures of children, close ups, night shots, etc… People criticising this book have missed the point; it is MEANT to be simple, it isn’t aimed at people who are already pretty proficient at photographs, it is aimed at people like me who are moving on from a compact and need a bit of guidance to get the best from the camera. If that’s you then this is the book for you.

Customer Review: not all good news
the card and battery cover is worthy of a 10p toy very poor - worse still mine was deliverd with a fault - strong horz lines across the pictures and total over exposure in daylight. Let see how Canon respond this, one is scrap.
Customer Review: (Almost) Faultless
Bought this camera a year ago. The only niggle that I have is the lack of a battery meter. It is the best ‘point and shoot’ digital camera that I have used/owned. It is small and easy to use.

The Little Book of Photography: For Digital and Film SLR Cameras

The Little Book of Photography: For Digital and Film SLR Cameras
Customer Review: The best and most practical book on SLR cameras
Fits in my camera case, in the smallest pocket- no problem! Easy to read -the Mary Berry approach to SLR camers, straight to the point! It has all the information I couldn’t find on any of the more expensive books. An excellent, “how to”, “what does that do”, “what do I need to take better pictures” guide. Totally love it. It will be my constant companion wherever I go. Essential for SLRs digital or film.

Customer Review: Well worth the money
This book has been much more useful than some because of its conciseness and size. The photos are in black and white but this does not matter. The parts on portraits and landscapes are good. Well worth the money.

The Canon EOS 300D Digital Camera: All You Need to Know

The Canon EOS 300D Digital Camera: All You Need to Know
Customer Review: Waste Of Money
I usually read reviews before purchasing. In this case I didn’t but wish I had. This is THE MOST pointless book I’ve ever bought. It should be aimed at children and called ‘My First Camera Book’. It only covers the blindingly obvious, stuff I’d sussed within an hour of first receiving my 300D. Avoid disappointment, this is CRAP.

Customer Review: a waste of paper
I agree 100% with the other two reviews - if only they were there before I wasted my money. It tells you vitually nothing that isn’t obvious just by looking at the camera let alone stuff that isn’t in the manual.

Get wide angle shots in a compact camera with the Coolpix S600 from Nikon, thanks to its 4x Nikkor zoom with a 28 mm optical stabiliser lens! The camera also has an Expeed processor for high speed shots and a vibration reduction system to eliminate blur and compensate for camera shake. The 3-InCamera mode includes three technologies to guarantee sharp and bright pictures. The AF face priority and red-eye correction gives you beautiful portrait shots, while the D-Lighting function balances light in images to compensate for shadow. You can still take great shots even in low lighting conditions thanks to the camera’s high ISO of 3200. Whether you’re in the mountains, on the beach or in a darkened concert hall, the S600 can capture the scene and take the perfect shot in a matter of seconds.

Customer Review: Nikon S600
I own a Nikon D70x and a D200 along with the usual collection of zoom, wide angle and macro lens. I needed something which would produce good quality images but that I could carry in my pocket. I bought the S600 on the day of it’s release and found it to be very good indeed. The lens is superb and once you find your way around the menus and use the correct set up the photos are very good. I am very pleased with the camera it does what it says on the packet.

Customer Review: Superb Lens but beware incompetent carrier!
Lens is excellent - service provided by the seller Allcam first rate let down only by the staggering incompetence of the delivery courier Citylink who managed to attempt to deliver to the wrong address twice in succession. Now e-commerce is a fantastic retail development but it depends on the reliability of the carrier. This one, Citylink in Northern Ireland should be avoided at all costs - they are eyewateringly inept and their customer service is a disgrace. By all means buy online folks but avoid this courier service like the plague!
Customer Review: One long lens
I’ve come back to photography after twenty-five years away so I still think in 35mm terms. I have this lens on my D40 and was very surprised at its long range which will be quite enough for me to take cricket photos this summer. I have a bad tremor but seem to have no problem getting good results with this lens so the VR works. The autofocus is something else but manual focusing is easy enough. For the money I don’t think you could get any better but keep your 18-55mm to hand because I think you’ll need both.
