Customer Review: An excellent piece of kit
I purchased this from Amazon, and all I can say is how impressive it is. It was ordered at circa 1pm and arrived before 9 the following morning! The machine is very user friendly, and really comes up to the mark. I haven’t been disappointed, despite reading some ordinary reviews from other people. The image quality is excellent (admittedly compared to my old tape model), I haven’t come across any of the software problems others have faced (I run a PC rather than a Mac) but the photo’s aren’t exactly great. This last point is the only thing stopping me giving it a 5 star rating. I also like the touch screen functionality. All in all, if you’re after something to capture memories of the kids I’d say this is ideal. If you want to shoot the next big movie or use it instead of your still camera it may not be for you though.

I am 82 years old and have been interested in all aspects of still photography ever since my mother gave me a Kodak Box Brownie for my twelfth birthday. At this age I no longer want to tote a big bag around with 35mm SLR plus lenses etc, and recently bought a SONY Cybershot digital camera for stills, which slips into the breast pocket of my shirt. I now live 800 miles from my daughters, and decided I should give “camcording” a try to keep them up-to-date with my activities. I discarded the mini-DV and DVD versions, not wanting to tote more stuff about with the camcorder. I settled for the SONY DCR-SR52 HDD. Amazon’s speedy and efficient service brought the camera to me within a few days. The camcorder really does fit into the palm of the hand. Superb build quality. The touch screen took a bit of getting used to, but I now have no difficulty. SONY do not supply a bag with the camcorder, so I bought an inexpensive one, well padded, (I had no desire to carry a bag with SONY written on it - 82 years, white haired, with a stick = easy target for the yobbos,) to give me peace of mind. Practically no weight to carry around, the strap sits comfortably on my shoulder and the bag has a pocket for the only accessory I carry, which is a spare battery. The lower end of the zoom range is useful, otherwise zooming is impractical without a tripod. The supplied battery is too small, the recording time being shortened by the amount of use of the zoom, switching on and off, reviewing the shots etc. I wanted to keep the length of the camcorder down and settled for the H50 version for the second battery. The H100 version would possibly upset the balance in the hand. The remote control gets me into the picture. I have a PC and a laptop running Windows XP Home. Installation was achieved after I had sussed out what SONY was writing about. Could be clearer. I am now in the process of editing my trial shots, and find that the editing system is sophisticated enough to give the results I want. An excellent buy.

Customer Review: Rubbish at any price
I am a qualified pro photographer and use point and shoot, Bridge and SLR cameras and started photography life using Praktica cameras, 35 years ago. This camera is almost unuseable, due to chronic over exposure in both flash and daylight conditions.It also shows terrible purple fringing around subjects.Then lens is very poor (not a Carl Zeiss used on Hasselblads! More a base for milk bottles)did you think nobody would notice? And what looks like very grainy results, interpolation? more like strangulation! Software is also poorly thought out and clunky. I bought this camera for my “technophobe” wife as a simple entry level camera, it’s not really fit for purpose in my opinion and i have asked for a refund. BAD,BAD,BAD, PRAKTICA,THIS IS A DAWG.. If you cannot produce a camera this cheaply, don’t! It just makes you look like a thoughtless inept manufacturer, you cannot re-build a consumer brand like this!

Having bought this camera for my stepdaughter at xmas we were both disappointed by the quality of the image on the monitor. In normal light conditions it was almost imperceptible and indoors it was unusable. Praktica commented that it was a very small lens and therefore what could I expect!! Their suggested solution was to use the flash but beware because the batteries did not last long!!! My advice check it out in a shop and don’t buy online as I did.
