Customer Review: Beautiful & well worth getting
I’ve just bought a new computer with Vista with a 19″ flat screen and the images on the Complete Garden software looked really beautiful. The CD-ROM runs very fast. No problems installing it as it auto-loads and finding the plant information is easy and realy fun being able to find plants so quickly. I’ve joined their Complete Gardens free garden forum and have posted a few quations and had some really informative replies from greenfingered people. It’s great and well worth having a look.

Garden State [2004]
Zach Braff (from the TV show Scrubs) stars in his writing/directing debut, Garden State–normally a doomed act of hubris, but Braff pulls it off with unassuming charm. An emotionally numb actor in L.A., Andrew (Braff) comes back to New Jersey after nine years away for his mother’s funeral. Andrew avoids his bitter father (Ian Holm) and joins old friends (including the superb Peter Sarsgaard) in a round of parties. Along the way he meets a girl (Natalie Portman) with demons of her own; bit by bit the two offer each other a little healing. Plotwise, Garden State is familiar stuff, a cross between The Graduate and a Meg Ryan movie, but Braff has an eye for goofy but resonant visual images, an ear for lively dialogue, and a great cast. The result is surprisingly fresh and funny. –Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Customer Review: Garden State: Pleasantly numb
I got this film as an avid fan of Scrubs, curious to see what Zach Braff could manage away from his role as ‘J.D.’, and on the whole, although I wasn’t completely blown away, I wasn’t completely let down either. This is a fairly pleasant film, certainly not uncomfortable to watch or suffering from poor acting, etc. It successfully puts you into the state of the main character (Zach Braff) - a sense of pleasant numbness. It does however leave you wanting a little more; its all very well getting across the main charater’s emotions, but I didn’t feel quite the same upsurge of emotion at the end as the main character displays, which is a slight let down. Its been well put together and looks clean and fresh. There are a few funny moments in the film, but its worth remembering that this film is not like the scrubs sitcom where Zach Braff made his name - a little more laid back, relaxing. However, having said that, it makes for a pleasant night in, and would probably suit a couple having a quiet night in with a bottle of wine.
Customer Review: Promising and affecting debut
Transferring his goofy persona in ‘Scrubs’ to something more delicate and considered must have been a challenge but Zach Braff proves he has an eye for human frailty that many up-and-coming filmmakers simply can’t match. ‘Garden State’ is a subtlely funny and emotionally wrought drama that tends to hint rather than pontificate about the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Braff himself is excellent and convincingly switches the madcap energy of JD into the inner numbness of Andrew Largeman. Natalie Portman gives a wonderfully amusing and endearing performance as the kooky girl who breaks through Andrew’s cold exterior and it is possibly her finest role since ‘Leon’. She is mesmerising in every scene she’s in and her character’s inner vulnerability makes her all the more intriguing. Peter Sarsgaard is also great fun as Andrew’s directionless friend with a trailer trash mother and he balances Braff’s withdrawn performance neatly. Finally, the wonderful soundtrack heightens the power of the fine script with some thoughtful interludes (The Shins are a particularly inspired choice). However, the film doesn’t quite pull off the Woody Allen observations it strives for and the ending feels a little too neat and tidy after the complexity of the relationships it has created. Ian Holm is also sadly underused as Andrew’s father and their faltering relationship could have been turned into a far more interesting sub-plot. Still, a great start to Braff’s directorial career and I hope his next effort continues in this vein.

Hsui Hsien (Hsui Xian) oolong, Also called Wuyi Narcissus Oolong, is a very popular oolong from Wuyi mountain. It has a honey fragrance. The brew is dark red, with a very smooth and sweet taste. It is very popular served in fine Chinese restaurant.

Customer Review: good strong oolong
This is a strongly flavored, astringent oolong tea. It is reasonably priced (that is priced as a beverage) and the same tea being sold at several times the cost by various vendors pushing it for its weight loss properties. It produces a cloudy, medium brown brew with strong, slightly rough flavor. Oolongs from this particular location are reputed to aid in losing weight. I prefer smoother oolongs with a lighter, clearer brew, but this is a matter of taste. This is a good, solid but not inspiring tea.

Customer Review: Great Tea
This tea is a great value. The quality and freshness is second to none.

If You love great wu long tea, this is the place to get it!

Bosch AXT 2200 HP Silent Garden Shredder
Amazon Price: ?264.99
Customer Review: You’re going to need a bigger compost bin
I bought this when an old, smaller and noisier shredder (not a Bosch) gave up the ghost. I ordered it yesterday morning, and it arrived by 10 this morning - well done Amazon and City Link. The reviews were right - it’s a really good machine. It’s simple to assemble - six bolts for the stand and wheels; tools supplied; assembly instructions which for once actually made sense - took me 5 minutes. A minor grouse - the packaging uses a lot of expanded polystyrene, which most councils don’t accept for recycling. How about something greener? It comes with a collection bag, which doubles as a dust cover when the machine is back in the shed. The machine is very easy to operate. It chomped its way through branches up to 4 or 4.5cm wide. The automatic feeder is wide enough to take several sticks together, which speeds things up. It works at a comfortable pace. It prefers woody material to thin green stuff, so it seems best to mix the two. It is comfortable to use - no whipping or snatching, so no sore hands after a long period of use. It took me an hour to do what took three hours with the old machine. But best of all, it’s quiet. You can hear the birds sing, and you don’t have ringing in your ears for the rest of the day. The chips are a bit bigger than with a bladed machine, but I don’t think they’ll take much longer to compost. In any case it’s useful to have a bit of bulk material to mix with grass clippings. I should be able to shred and compost a lot of material which previously I’d have put on the bonfire, so I think I’m going to need a bigger compost bin. Yes, it’s more expensive than a smaller, noisier machine, but it’s definitely worth paying the extra. All in all, an excellent machine, which is a pleasure to use. (Yes, that sounds sad, but it’s true!)
Customer Review: Sheffield Star Man
Bought the shredder having seen all the reviews and the glowing tributes to this bit of machinery. Well they were right! I’ve just spent a morning cutting back 4 medium sized trees with masses of branches etc. which would have taken numerous trips to the ‘dump it’ site or an hefty bill for someone to do the job for me. Very pleased has it worked tirelessly for about 3 hours chewing and spitting out the pulp from some hefty sized branches and not a ‘jam’ in sight. Well worth the money and pretty much paid for itself. One minor flaw is that it less good with leafy and thin foliage i.e. privet hedges. All in all 1st class!

Customer Review: Absolutely riveting
Rarely do I find a book that I simply cannot put down, but this is one. I have read all of Tess Gerritsen’s books and thought this would be a Rizzoli/Isles story again; I was disappointed when I read the synopsis when I realised it wasn’t but oh how I was hooked from the very first page. I particularly loved the past and present story line and Rose Connolly was a wonderful heroine. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Fabulous stuff.
Customer Review: Medical mysteries offering twist to a historical thriller
In her 11th medical thriller, “The Bone Garden,” Maine physician Tess Gerritsen turns from the exploits of Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles to give readers a historical thriller about a serial killer - known as the West End Reaper - loose on the streets of 1830s Boston. more stories like this The tale of crime from a bygone era emerges as the parallel plot to the modern-day story of a divorcee who finds human bones buried in her Weston yard. Isles appears briefly, but her presence is not essential to Gerritsen’s story. Soon the protagonist, teacher Julia Hamill, is spending much of her summer break in Maine going through old letters and other papers with the octogenarian relative of her house’s previous owner. Gerritsen has won praise for her prior medical thrillers, and her previous effort, “The Mephisto Club,” was a bestseller. “The Bone Garden,” however, does not quite come together. The parallel stories are uneven, with the greatest weight going to the 19th-century murder mystery. The modern-day tale is part narrative device and part love story, but it isn’t hook enough to justify its existence, and the plot around Julia’s life is barely developed, leaving the reader to wonder if it is necessary at all. The historical murder mystery fares better, but the suspense sometimes lags. This plot centers on an Irish immigrant, Rose Connolly, and on a group of medical students studying at the hospital where Rose’s sister, Aurnia, died in childbirth. Aurnia’s husband is a brute with little interest in raising the baby girl, so Rose takes charge of her niece, Margaret, and is determined to keep her from mysterious parties equally bent on snatching her. Medical student Norris Marshall, a poor farm boy from Belmont out of place among his gentleman classmates, takes an interest in Rose’s plight. Along the way, people associated with the young aunt turn up dead. Norris is earnest and idealistic, admirable traits, to be sure, but a tad boring in a hero. Rose is plucky, panicked, devastatingly poor, and a good deal more interesting than Norris. Gerritsen also includes a fictionalized Oliver Wendell Holmes, the physician and author who was the father of the famed jurist, in the group of medical students, and that adds some spice. Gerritsen, as always, puts her medical training to ghoulish use in her descriptions of both the murders and the dismayingly frequent deaths in childbirth in the hospital’s maternity ward. These vivid descriptions are not for the faint-hearted. Indeed, despite the book’s shortcomings, the medical practices that Gerritsen depicts are fascinating. In addition to the well-drawn scenes in the hospital, she takes readers on grisly journeys with a procurer of cadavers, to be used in the training of medical students. Here, too, she calls on her experience as a physician to render situations in excruciatingly horrific detail. Boston readers will also appreciate her description of the mid-19th-century city and its environs. “The Bone Garden” ends with some neat plot twists, both in the murder mystery and the mystery of maternal deaths. Much as readers might wish that Gerritsen had sharpened the thriller and done more with the contemporary story, they will come away from the book with an appreciation of the evolution of medical practice.

Bounty Hunter Metal Detector Headphone

Bounty Hunter Metal Detector Headphone
BOUNTY HUNTER HEADPHONES Bounty Headphones For use with Bounty Hunter(R) metal detectors ; True stereo headphones ; Individual volume controls for right and left sides; .25″ stereo plug compatible with all Bounty Hunter(R) models with .25″ headphone jacks Bounty Headphones

Customer Review: Not good for metal detecting !!
Bought a pair for use with my Bounty Hunter metal detector. On the plus side they are very comfortable and have good sound quality. The cord is a thin wire without coils. The volume control hangs up on everything it gets close to, including the detector. If the volume control was closer to the headphones and it had a sturdy coiled cord, it would be a great headphone. But as it is it is not worth the aggravation.

Customer Review: Order Cancelled without any explanation.
I ordered these in combination with a metal detector for Christmas and now that Christmas is here, the order cancelled without an explanation. I have no idea as to the quality of the headphones, but there appears to be a problem with supply and distribution which will make me look elsewhere!

Garden Ruin
Never settling for one musical style, always searching for new ways to combine their jazz, desert-rock, Mariachi and dub influences, Tucson outfit Calexico have taken joyous quantum leaps, jumping from low-key, marmalade-coloured vignettes (their debut album Spoke) to more vivid palettes on LPs such as Hot Rail. Garden Ruins represents the band’s most populist statement yet. Assembled during and after their superlative collaboration with Iron & Wine (In The Reins) and a high profile tour with Wilco, the project connects with a wider musical picture–that of the classic American songbook.

The band avoid conjuring the busual Southwestern vistas in favour of more direct (and less exotic) styles like pop, rock and folk. It could have all been so terrible but in fact it’s one of the best decisions the band ever made: from the easy-going lope of “Lucky Dime” to the bombastic thrusts of “Letter To Bowie Knife” and “All Systems Red”, Garden Ruin is hugely palatable (not to mention surprisingly political), marking yet another zenith for Tucson’s most sonically nomadic sons. –Paul Sullivan

Customer Review: Calexico are dead, long live Calexico?
There is no doubt that this CD will appeal to a larger audience than its predecessors. As a frequent traveller to and enjoyer of the southern Arizona ambience, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Calexico kaleidoscope of sound. The CDs have been mixed in quality but have always boasted stunning highlights. This CD has enjoyed good reviews but I cannot find one truly outstanding and memorable track. It is a pleasant but palid development of their soundscape with all the quirky nuances mixed well down. Few will dislike it, to be sure, but what a loss!
Customer Review: Where Has All The Music Gone???
Contrary to what is written in the ‘Description’ piece above, this CD will NOT please all of Calexico’s fans, and it certainly does not do anything for me! There is a noticeable absence of Calexico’s customary musicality and far too much singing. In fact there is not one interesting instrumental piece in the whole CD and the lifeless vocals quickly begin to drag. It’s sad but true that this is several steps behind any other Calexico CD and has almost no appeal.

Customer Review: THE ‘GOODS’ DELIVER….
This is the only official complete series of the ‘GOODIES’,and contains the usual mixed bag of out-and-out gems, with one or two reheated themes……..overall, the standard is high enough to warrant purchase; picture/sound quality is fine, gag-quota is high, with many elaborate visual stunts of which this team is celebrated. One episode: ‘HOLIDAY’ –is studio-only, which affords textured interplay within the team. Apparantly, this series of 7 25-min shows reportedly cost as much as the entire BBC output of 70 shows…..GO FIGURE! VISUALLY impressive as ever, with only token ITV ‘forced laughter’ from the studio audience. This show translates to the commercial channel far better than other COMEDY exports. —-FINE.
Customer Review: Yum Yum (but only one turkey)
This is the third collection of Goodies episodes from Network, the others being ‘At Last’ and ‘At last A Second Helping’. The ‘Robot’ and ‘Bigfoot’ episodes are certainly as good as much of their output at the BBC. Confining this collection to the LWT series however has resulted in a considerably shorter programme (175 mins as opposed to 255 and 240 minutes). The additional features are all on the second disk, and are a mixed bag. The Goodies Music Performance Archive gives us live performances of five of their songs, including ‘Funky Gibbon’, a feature noticeably absent (with one exception) from the earlier collections. There is also an interview archive and, bizarrely some amateur footage of Tim judging a Turkey competition! (This last item comes into the catagory of being so bad it’s good. Nevertheless you won’t want to watch it more than once.)The disc also features complete episodes of ‘From the Top’ and ‘Doctor In The House’. Both featuring input from one of the Goodies, but Graeme’s appearance in the latter is so brief that if you blink you’ll miss it. Incidentally, those people who think that ‘The Goodies’ is dated should watch this episode of ‘Doctor In The House’ to see what the word really means! As with the previous collections this comes complete with an informative 28 page booklet. The previous collections however had been digitally restored; this one hasn’t and, although the quality is not that bad, it does show. There are still about 40 or so episodes from the BBC years still to be released on DVD, including the whole of series’ 3 and 6. While we wait however, this collection is a welcome addition to the series.

Oregon Scientific RM313PNA-B Self-Setting Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor

Oregon Scientific RM313PNA-B Self-Setting Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor
Housed in high-tech blue plastic, this alarm clock is far more sophisticated than its cute appearance may lead one to believe. Whether you check on the time by consulting the clock’s LCD screen or by looking at a large red-light projection of the time beamed onto a wall or ceiling, you’ll know it’s accurate. That’s because the clock is equipped with a radio receiver tuned to the U.S. Atomic Clock, and keeps time with split-second accuracy by automatically adjusting, if necessary, to the Atomic Clock’s signals six times every 24 hours. From those signals, the 5-1/4-by-4-1/2-inch clock (2-1/2 inches thick) not only shows the precise time, but also displays the date and day, with automatic adjustment for daylight-saving time and leap year, according to the North American time zone for which the clock is set. (The day can be shown in English, Spanish, or French.)

The red-light projection makes it possible to check the time without squinting. If the clock is in battery mode (two AA batteries required but not included), pressing the clock’s snooze bar will beam the time onto the ceiling for five seconds–and also backlight the LCD screen. If the clock is plugged into a wall socket with an AC adapter (included), the projection and backlighting will be available either for five seconds with the snooze bar or continuously if a continuous-beam control is set. As a backup, you can set the time, day, and date manually as well as automatically. –Fred Brack

Customer Review: Great travel clock
I purchased the clock to use as a travel alarm clock. I have another projection clock for home, so thought a travel projection clock would be pretty cool. I found it works great. I love seeing the time on the ceiling.

Customer Review: Projection Alarm Clock
Oregon Scientific RM313PNA-B Self-Setting Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor. I already had one of these clocks I received as a gift and I love it. I need my glasses to see the time at night, so with the time projected on the ceiling, I just have to turn my head and look up and I have the time. I got the second one for when I am traveling. I would recommend this product with no hesitation.

Customer Review: Encylopedia?
Whilst an excellent read, I am utterly befuddled as to how a bastion of Britishness such as the RHS could produce such a tome, filled, as it is, to the very gunnels with useful advice for any gardener, without managing the relatively simple accompanying feat of spelling the word encyclopaedia correctly. Perhaps there is a new American royalty which has somehow escaped my attention?
Customer Review: Got a garden?, then buy this book
Got a garden? Then buy this book. Don’t argue, just buy it! Every once in a while you encounter a book which is just head an shoulders above the others in its subject and this is one of those books. Having this book is a little like having an experienced gardener over one fence who can give a kindly word when he sees you about to make an expensive mistake with the wrong plant or wrong treatment while at the same time over the opposite fence is an expert DIY fan who can tell you which tool to use and how to level your ground before constructing a patio. As others have said this is a book which will rapidly pay for itself simply because it can stop you making those mistakes. Is there anything it won’t do. Well obviously it can not be absolutely comprehensive. If you want to construct a zen garden it won’t tell you the finer points of feng shui to know how to align the garden. Indeed any highly specific subjects it won’t cover but for a single point of reference this is excellent. This is a book in the spirit of gardening before TV makeover programmes tried to tell people that ripping out all your top soil and putting down decking was gardening so while it won’t bother with the fripperies of design it will deal with the practicalities and as others have said that will save you more than the cost of this book in avoiding expensive mistakes. This is an absolute must buy for anyone who is into or who wants to be into gardening. I have used my previous copy for years and I would expect this new edition to last just as long. Look at it in that light and this is not an expensive book but it is an invaluable one.

Customer Review: The Fallout “Cult Classic” Pack
This is a combination of the Fallout series so far, and it is very good. Everyone that is a fan of this cult classic should get this pack if they don’t already own them.

Customer Review: A star is born
This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It’s easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn’t quite ideal for act 1, but after that she’s really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti’s face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata.
Customer Review: Great singing, problem with the sound
Decca ought to consider whether using surround sound is really such a good idea. Surround sound tends to emphasise background noise. Add to this the tendency for modern systems to favour low-frequency sounds, and personally I find the scenes with chorus marred by a distracting clumping of feet and shuffling of bodies.

Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick

Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick
In a wild, hair-raising dogfight, precision and control are critical. That’s why the SideWinder has been reengineered for even more accuracy. With its comfortable handle and an improved throttle, this professional quality stick feels as great as it performs. Having the SideWinder on your side is like having an Ace for a wingman.Microsoft SideWinder is an ultimate joystick!

Customer Review: Microsoft’s last generation of SideWinder
The basis of Microsoft’s last generation of SideWinder joysticks, the Precision 2 design was a further refinement of the previous Precision Pro. Compared to the Precision Pro, the Precision 2 dropped the Pro’s shift button, replaced the throttle wheel with a more traditional lever, and rearranged the face buttons on the stick in to a symmetric design. The Precision 2 also dropped all gameport compatibility by only shipping in a USB version, and was slightly smaller and lighter than the Pro. The Precision 2 has a metal base so a static mat is recommended to remove any static build up problems.

Customer Review: NOT TRUE –> Microsoft Does Not Support Hardware
Okay, so I see that there are several people writing comments/reviews about Microsoft not supporting their joysticks. This is not true (as far as anything not too ancient, ie: the SideWinder 3D Pro).

The first run of Precision Pro joysticks are not compatible with a USB adapter. These joysticks are the ones that have a Product ID number starting with 97462. ALL OTHER JOYSTICKS WILL WORK WITH THE PROPER ADAPTER IN WINDOWS XP.

Customer Review: Real Thing…But Hard to Start
The previous reviewer was accurate…it is hard to start when cold. I suspect it has something to do with the fuel delivery system…you can see air in the line after pumping(priming). It works a little better if you do EXACTLY what they say. Don’t use starting fluid…it doesn’t help. Once started this machine is a real work horse…I like it better than the small rental machines (Mantis?) for chewing up clay bearing soil (this is East Texas…not Georgia clay).
Customer Review: Works Great
This tiller works very well, escpecially for its small size. it is basically a weed eater motor mounted on a small tiller body, and has plenty of power

Customer Review: Graham
There is nothing that Graham has done that I don’t like. If I had the funds to hire an interior designer, I would have him flown to the states. Graham would be my first choice, Debbie Travis my second and Candice Olson my third. I can’t even put it into words what Graham does to a room. My hat is off to you Graham.
Customer Review: changing rooms
This cd is terrible!! It offers limited choices in terms of rooms and furniture, colour and design, I was expecting to be inspired, but instead it made me wish I had spent my ?… on some paint for my house!

Customer Review: Root Cellar
This book looks interesting, but I am not a farmer. I plan to give this to my son (who has a farm) as a Christmas gift. I will have to wait for his reaction to the book.
Customer Review: Why pay so much at the grocers? Learn to store your food.
I feel this book is extremly helpful if you want to install a root celler. Many how to answers. And in this day with so many moving back to rural area’s why wouldnt you want to be less dependent, while providing home grown-healthier food for yourself and those you love? Thank U Rhonda

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.

“As the U.S. population made an unprecedented mad dash for the Sun Belt, one carload of us paddled against the tide, heading for the Promised Land where water falls from the sky and green stuff grows all around. We were about to begin the adventure of realigning our lives with our food chain.

“Naturally, our first stop was to buy junk food and fossil fuel. . . .”

Hang on for the ride: With characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that’s better for the neighborhood and also better on the table. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

“This is the story of a year in which we made every attempt to feed ourselves animals and vegetables whose provenance we really knew . . . and of how our family was changed by our first year of deliberately eating food produced from the same place where we worked, went to school, loved our neighbors, drank the water, and breathed the air.”

Customer Review: What It Might Be Like
I enjoyed this book as a fun read. The plot is kind of anti-climactic, but it gives the reader an idea of what might be involved to produce your own food. Gardening and rasing animals takes knowledge and experience, and even a small garden can be daunting for someone who doesn’t know what to do. There are little diversions throughout the book where the author tells about questionable practices in corporate food production. These are a little annoying when you already know about them, but for someone who didn’t, they could be eye-opening and helpful for finding better alternatives. She also includes a few recipes. The main things I liked about the book were that it was relaxing entertainment, and that it made me realize more about what’s required to garden and raise poultry.
Customer Review: A memoir, a polemic, a sermon, and a call to locavorism
Review - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life, by Barbara Kingsolver with Steven L. Hopp and Camille Kingsolver This book is several things, a memoir, a polemic, a sermon, and a call to locavorism. On a small Virginia farm a family decides to experiment for one year eating mostly homegrown and locally-grown food. The cast is acclaimed writer Barbara Kingsolver, who gardens and writes the narrative, professor-husband Steven Hopp, who is allowed in the kitchen to bake bread and writes sidebar essays, late-teen daughter Camille, who writes observations, pertinent recipes and meal plans, and nine-year-old Lily, an earnest poultry entrepreneur. Kingsolver is an accomplished writer of mostly novels and is an alert and delightful wordsmith. In this nonfiction work, her writing is entertaining but lacks discipline; she bounces from object to subject like a child with too many toys. A chapter titled Molly Mooching (a Molly is a morel mushroom) provides history on the farm Steven bought some years ago, delivers an apologia for tobacco farmers, offers Appalachian flora trivia, takes us on a hunt for morels, puts potatoes and other early plantings in the ground, expounds on onions, interjects an essay by Steven titled Is Bigger Really Better? and concludes with Camille who writes Getting It While You Can, a teen’s perspective on her mother’s food plan and a recipe for Asparagus and Morel Bread Pudding. All of which is fun, disconcerting, and marginally useful. In addition to politics and sermons, twenty chapters take us through planning, planting, preparing, eating and preserving. Titles include Springing Forward, The Birds and the Bees, Growing Trust: Mid-June, Eating Neighborly: Late June, Zucchini Larceny: July, and Life in a Red State: August, a double-entendre of tomatoes and more politics. For dessert we accompany Barbara and Steven on a two-week second honeymoon in Italy. This book is a teaser. It titillates the reader with the benefits of home gardening but provides few gardening details; it teases with the compelling concept of locavorism but lacks inspiring success stories. Worst, it is na?ve. Experienced gardener-writers like Eliot Coleman, author of Four-Season Harvest, know and show how to keep a garden going year-round. Kingsolver apparently feels that the gardening world dies in autumn and does not reappear until asparagus pops up in spring. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is minimally useful as a reference book because, alas and inexplicably, there is no index. Thus, to remember the names of the six companies that control ninety-eight percent of the world’s seeds, one must flip pages and hope for a lucky find. (It is in Chapter 3, titled Springing Forward.) You could write your own index. You could underline extensively and write key words at chapter beginnings. My messy alternative is to apply little sticky notes next to items I may wish to find again, so my copy now looks like a yellow-feathered flat bird. Back matter includes a bibliography, a list of organizations, and sources for Steven’s sidebar references. All of Camille’s recipes may be found on the web site: www.AnimalVegetableMiracle.com which has lots of photos. The site is a fun visit that puts a face on the people, the plants, and the animals. I agree strongly with the locavore movement. The present food production system is a soil damaging, oil depleting, nutrition compromising scheme designed for corporate, not human health. For more on all that I recommend Michael Pollan’s books: Omnivore’s Dilemma, and, In Defense of Food. Kingsolver has many fans so I hope that this book will create many converts to locavorism. But I’m skeptical, mindful of Steinbeck’s admonition that, “No one wants advice, only corroboration.” There is a plethora of advice in this book. But it will provide corroboration for those who are already concerned about the sad state of our food economy wherein any digestible item is supermarket available on every day of the year at great expenditure of oil and soil, at great reduction of flavor, at great loss to local communities and your checking account. I have three pieces of advice for the Hoppsolvers (author construction): grow much more garlic, keep it in a cool place, not behind the kitchen stove, and, stop making your bread with flour that has been oxidizing since it was ground–grind wheat and other grains just before making your bread; it will be nutritionally superior and even more delicious. In spite of being tossed from one subject to another time and again and learning almost nothing new about home food production, I enjoyed Kingsolver’s range of interests and her entertaining writing. So here’s a big thank you to all my homestead list friends who recommended that I read this book.

SWISSMEMORY USB Victorinox, the liaison between the traditional Swiss pocket knife and a Hi-Speed USB storage device is now available.

Customer Review: NOT as described
To my disappointment, this USB pocket knife arrived without the scissors/knife/etc., JUST the USB key. It’s called the “Flight” version of the piece. Ridiculous!! Get it together, Amazon!

Customer Review: Not as advertised
I had the exact same problem as another reviewer. Ordered this for Christmas, the description clearly states it’s a memory card with knife, file and scissors and all I received was the memory card only model. It’s obviously too late to get an exchange by Christmas! :\
