Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long

Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long
If you love the joys of eating home-garden vegetables but always thought those joys had to stop at the end of summer, this book is for you. Eliot Coleman introduces the surprising fact that most of the United States has more winter sunshine than the south of France. He shows how North American gardeners can successfully use that sun to raise a wide variety of traditional winter vegetables in backyard cold frames and plastic covered tunnel greenhouses without supplementary heat. Coleman expands upon his own experiences with new ideas learned on a winter-vegetable pilgrimage across the ocean to the acknowledged kingdom of vegetable cuisine, the southern part of France, which lies on the 44th parallel, the same latitude as his farm in Maine.
This story of sunshine, weather patterns, old limitations and expectations, and new realities is delightfully innovative in the best gardening tradition. Four-Season Harvest will have you feasting on fresh produce from your garden all through the winter.

Customer Review: Inspirational!
I love this book. It inspires with it’s adroit mix of low-tech in an informed, high-tech world. Nope, not a return to the past, but the good past informs and points the way to an unexpectedly lush future. Gardening by latitude? Year-round harvests in MAINE?

Particularly interesting to me is the fresh look of self-sufficient gardening when you harvest just what you need to eat, when you need it, instead of giant harvests for canning and freezing. It makes the entire process fit more comfortably into an ordinary life… exactly what I was looking for. No heroics, lots of common sense.

I’ll be using this book a lot!

Customer Review: Eating fresh all year long
If they can do it it Maine, it shouod be possible just about anywhere.

Interesting reading with good, usable background info. Plan on incorporating all of their suggestions this coming year!

Customer Review: Gift wrapping caddy.
I got the idea from a magazine to use this for gift wrapping accessories and it’s perfect. I keep scissors, electric scissors, tape, pens, hole punch for cards, cards, ribbon, and embellishments all in the pockets. Paper and gift bags fit in the bucket. Just pick up the whole bucket and take it to your wrapping area. Talk about convenient!
Customer Review: Great organizer

Customer Review: Vista = Punch Software.. Stay Away
I have experienced Non Compatiblity w/Vista & Poor Support from Punch with respect to email response and problem solving for their product.
Customer Review: Parts are too complex, others are too limited
After using this product for basic stuff [floor plans], I found that the 3D functionality to be far too complex and not really accurate. To create roof, ceiling and floors to create a realistic version of your floor plan, the process seemed too cumbersome and the elevations never quite seemed to be right. The pictures they show you are obviously done by the “professionals” on this software and mine never turn out quite realistic. I also have found that the gallery of objext to be very limited and a little confusing. Why there are twenty different towel bars and candles I do not know. Plus, there aren’t many 2D images to place in floor plans. If you are a hobbyist, this program might suit your needs, but if you are using this for a function, don’t bother.

Customer Review: STILL A CLASSIC FIFTY YEARS ON
There have been many productions of Grimes around the world and a good few recordings made since this first one was committed to disc nearly half a century ago. From our perspective in the 21st Century it is hard to recall the huge impact made by the first production at Sadlers’ Wells in 1946 and by this recording just a decade or so later. It’s now easier to see the antecedents and ancestors of the piece - Verdi, Mahler, even Mozart. At the time it seemed a really revolutionary piece, not only for British but also for worldwide opera. The recording, too, was something new. This was the first time that John Culshaw and his Decca team had fully implemented their ideas for making a real production out of a stereo opera recording. The original booklet proudly showed the grid laid out on the floor that allowed singers to move about the imaginary set as they would in a real theatrical production. And the recorded sound was absolutely state-of-the-art for its time, then still in the early days of stereo. These digital transfers still shine almost as brightly as any of the more modern recordings. The performance itself has rightly become a classic. The composer conducting his own work, of course, has a special authenticity. And more. Britten, unlike many conducting composers, was a highly professional, totally convincing and usually revelatory conductor - of other composers’ works as well as his own. So it is here. Working with an opera house chorus and orchestra (Covent Garden), there is still something of the `shock of the new’ about this performance. The drama of the interludes - particularly the Passacaglia and the one before the final scene which is not included in the concert set - has enormous impact and, in these two cases, is probably more moving than any. The reprise of the Dawn Interlude at the end of the opera as the villagers return to their work as though nothing has happened, closing over the incident as disinterestedly as the sea closes over Grimes himself, carries true tragic weight. And, with its pp ending, seems to look forward to another seascape at the end of Britten’s final opera, Death in Venice. Grimes was, of course, the first of Britten’s great operatic gifts to his lover and muse, Peter Pears. The role is written for that specific voice and it sits inimitably within its range and capabilities. Whether it’s the dreamy head-tones of the `Great Bear and Pleiades’, the motivically vital and dramatic plunge of `God have mercy upon you’, the great yearning leap of a ninth on `What harbour shelters peace’ or the highs and lows of the mad scene (melodic and emotional), the phrases sit perfectly and naturally in the voice. Pears sings the role as no other tenor could and it remains the yardstick for all future performances. If I have a hesitation, it is over the characterisation of Grimes. Pears just seems a little urbane and sophisticated for this uncouth, unsophisticated, violent outsider (albeit one with dreams). Vickers sits at the opposite pole in a performance Britten was said to have hated: he is a raw brute of a man, aurally on disc as much as physically in the theatre. It is a great performance, too - proof that the role is more than big enough to take radically different interpretations. If you want another great reading that sits somewhere between the two, then Langridge on the Hickox discs is probably your man. As for the rest, this recording was made before all parts in Britten recordings were reserved for the Aldeburgh coterie. Ellen and Balstrode are both taken from Decca’s roster of American singers. Both are more than adequate, but probably bettered elsewhere - Heather Harper is arguably the finest Ellen on disc; sadly the best Balstrode in my experience, Norman Bailey, should have been on the first Davis recording but was indisposed at the time. Owen Brannigan (who was a member of the coterie) is probably the finest Swallow on disc. For the rest of the wonderful gallery of Borough villagers, it’s a matter of swings and roundabouts between the various recordings. Nevertheless, this remains a classic recording. The touchstone for your choice of recording is probably the singer playing the title role where the choice lies between Pears, Vickers and Langridge. But then again, Haitink on EMI also provides a highly memorable performance, more international and mainstream in outlook, despite a slightly weaker Grimes in Rolfe-Johnson. Ah, decisions, decisions!
Customer Review: The Original - the Best
This is the composer's own realisation of the work, and as such is closest to the PETER GRIMES of his mindscape. He fine-tuned his score for the voice of Peter Pears, who was both his muse and lover. The role has been better sung since. It has to be admitted that Pears has a somewhat reedy voice. However, a combination of Claire Watson in superb form, an unsurpassed Royal Opera House, Covent Garden cast and orchestra, the gloriously intimate sound of 1950s Decca recording (when all audio transcriptions were of Rolls Royce quality, or they didn't reach the vinyl), and the fact that when you are hearing this version, you are witnessing a love poem from Britten to Pears, makes it the one to covet.

    Customer Review: It really works!
I have been fighting a rat problem in the attic for two years, including one year of using a commercial pest control company. They caught a few in the beginning but stopped catching them even though we could still hear them. Obviously the rats had learned to outsmart the traps. I finally took matters into my own hands and had this installed in the attic. It is an unfinished attic with no walls, so very conducive to this technology. In less than a week, no more rats! It still seems a little too good to be true, but so far so good… I’m a believer.

    Customer Review: great product
I never imagined this thing would work. I had used all traps and mice were still mowing down plants on our deck. My wife is very happy now.

    Blitz 50863 Water Container

    Blitz 50863 Water Container
6 Plus, Self Venting Water Can.

Customer Review: A little flimsy, and not exactly as described
This product is described as featuring a “Transparent color (that) allows view of water level.” Unfortunately, that is not true. Mine came molded in an opaque blue plastic, and you cannot see the water level.

Also, the spout is made from a thin plastic that feels brittle, and both it and the container have poorly molded threads that make it easy to cross-thread the spout when attaching it. Furthermore, the container cannot be sealed without the spout in place and exposed as shown in the product photo. This all combines to make the spout a vulnerable weak point that could be relatively easily snapped off, rendering the container useless.

I will keep mine since I don’t intend to use it regularly and I think the spout will survive my limited use, but my next purchase will be a genuine army-issue water can. They are much more durable.

    Customer Review: Good but dated.
Although the DVD for this program has only recently been released, the original date of the broadcast was in the 1980’s. If you’re a novice like me that doesn’t matter because the basic elements of gardening probably won’t have changed that much and there is a lot of very good information on the DVD. The host is an elderly English gentleman so his use of language is a little bit different than the American English with which we colonists are familiar, but he does not say anything you won’t understand. You might want to consider the “Rebecca’s Garden, Volume 2 - Rose Gardening” DVD as an alternative. The source material is newer and the host speaks in a comfortable (for me) American idiom. Either DVD is about the same in length of time at just under an hour, they both are priced about the same.

My not quite 2 year old grandson took to this right away! I worried that it might be difficult for him, but he is currently obsessed with shapes and was able to complete each puzzle very quickly. Although he could do it readily, it holds his interest for quite some time and he talks about the shapes and colors and the pictures they make as he places each piece. Definitely a keeper!

Customer Review: Nice picture - shame about the bag
Bag afficionados may be a tad disappointed to find there are very few photographs of Monty’s shoulder bag in this volume and there is no listing of the contents of the bag in the index. Other than that it is OK.
Customer Review: Excellent - but !
I love Monty Don’s writing, as the previous review states in his comments - ‘it feel’s personal’ and you get a really good feel of what he is seeing on his tour of the gardens. The details of his note taking etc. make it a more enjoyable read than a book that is just factual. I felt that you were getting an honest review of how he felt at the time of writing and being human enough to comment on how he might feel differently at other times of visiting some of them. My disapointment came from the appearance of the book and wish that they had kept more to the look of ‘The Jewel Garden’ which captured me straight away from the beautiful photography on the front cover and the pics inside. If there had been more photographs to show what Monty is describing in “Around the world in 80 Gardens’ it may have benefited from it, but I think this has been the publishers at fault rather than Monty Don. I must admit I hated the cover design if I had been the Co. who had produced it I don’t think I would have put my website on the inside flap. Well done to Montague though, and long may he continue writing in this engaging manner.

    Tweezerman Dual Surface Nail Brush
    Amazon Price: $3.60
    Customer Review: Does the job
A decent nail brush. I purchased it to clean out the assorted grime that accumulates after a day of construction, and it does fairly well. I wish it had stiffer bristles, and also have had some problems with grimy water getting inside the body of the brush, as it is constructed of two pieces popped together. This is not an issue for anything but aesthetics, however, as it does not effect the function of the brush.

My nephew asked for a “Big Wheel” because he was having difficulties riding the regular bike I bought him. He’s quit small for a 4 yr old. He loves it. Although much of this product is plastic it seems very sturdy and has held up to his daily use very well. It seems better built than the real big wheel product that I saw at Toys R Us. I would buy this again

Going on vacation? This is the inexpensive, safe and easy way to know that your plants will be alive and thriving when you return! The Directroot GelSpike utilizes a custom blend of “DRiWATER” time release water to automatically water most plants for up to 3 weeks. Simply snap the 9oz bottle onto the water spike (included) and watch the gel slide on down, where it will slowly dissolve back into pure water, giving your plants slow and steady moisture for 2-3 weeks! The GelSpike is 5″ long, and delivers water and fertilizer right to the roots so less is needed, it also breaks open crusted surfaces and helps aerate soil, reducing risk of overwatering. We recommend two or more gel spikes for any pots larger than 10 inches in diameter. It’s also the perfect solution for busy gardeners who may not have time to tend to your plants during an especially stressful time and need a temporary plant babysitter -this is it!

These are 2 of the greatest Poirot episodes to open the 3rd series of the show in 1991. How Does Your Garden Grow?- Poirot is asked to open the Chelsea Flower Show. Whilst there, he meets an elderly lady who is keen to talk to him, before they meet to talk however she is dead. Poirot must uncover the truth. The Million Dollar Bond Robbery- The book of this episode is only 10 pages long and a little dull- not so this! The scenery, acting and story in this episode is even better than usal. Mille Bornes Card Game

    Mille Bornes Card Game
You’re cruising along at 100 mph, bolstered by an extra tank of gas, when suddenly your opponent cuts you off with a flat-tire card. You slam to a halt, sidelined until you draw a spare tire. It’s a 1,000-mile race along an imaginary road; your goal is to arrive first, avoiding the hazards–flat tires, accidents, empty gas tanks–while inflicting them on your opponents and collecting the spares and repairs that will speed you on. The oddly absorbing Mille Bornes (French for 1,000 milestones and pronounced “meel born”) has easy-to-follow rules of the road: green means go; red means stop; obey the speed limit at all times. You might even pick up a few words in French. Nostalgics beware: Anyone who owned an earlier version of the game will miss the acid-green plastic cardholder and the oversize cards. Mille Bornes is for two to six players.

Customer Review: Good game for all ages …
I would rather watch paint dry than play cards, but found this game very interesting and a lot of fun. It’s easy to learn, as each player has a “reference” card in front of them throughout the match. Forming teams to play Mille Bornes increases the competition and intensity of the game. I liked it so much, I bought the game for my daughter and her family.

Customer Review: Mille Bornes Card Game Review
Great game. My boys love this game. Good for memory skills and strategy and math practice (addition). We took it on vacation with us and voided some tv in the hotel room!

I have a 6 y.o. boy and a 4 y.o. boy and they both enjoy this wheelbarrow. They’ve had plastic ones in the past that just didn’t hold up. It’s too small for my 6 y.o. but he still has fun with it. It fits the 4 y.o. pretty well but I wouldn’t recommend it for any older. Assembly was relatively easy. The parts didn’t line up quite right but were flexible enough to make it work.

    Customer Review: Absolutely useless
Like other reviewers, I have been very disappointed. Another major criticism, you cant put in many garden/house features - a conservatory, pergola, greenhouse, shed; utility area. You cant have a walled garden. In fact you cant do much!
    Customer Review: Very Disappointing
I think I've given this my best shot but it doesn't come up to the mark. Clumsy to use overall. Picking plants takes ages because of the interface; and almost all of the plants I wanted - which are common in the UK - don't appear in the plant selection which is US based. The final crunch was the problem it creates with user accounts. The software won't run in a limited user account but that doesn't stop windows installer trying it's best and slowing everything down to a crawl while it attempts the installation process. I'm told it's a problem with the software and would need a re-write to get round. Not my best purchase.

Since remixing Radiohead’s “Climbing The Walls” into a horizontal classic, `chill out’ champions Zero 7–Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns–have gone from strength to strength. This third album from the duo is highly anticipated to say the least. Will the duo stick with the floozy, fuzzy, lounge-heavy sound that has made them famous? Or will they make an Air-style u-turn into rock/harder electronica territory. The Garden does it all. Enlisting vocalists Sia and Jos? Gonzalez (Henry has a go too), the document displays many links back to previous work–warm synths, French pop flair, subtle world music influences–but also showcases a keener sense of experimentalism and a more driven, assertive sound. The contrast between the sultry, folky Gonzalez (who supplies four tracks, including a reworking of his own great track “Crosses”) and the more soulful, upbeat Sia (who supplies three) introduces an interesting dynamic and help Zero 7 achieve what is ultimately a more mature and interesting direction. –Paul Sullivan

Customer Review: Not like the other albums
I am not going to make a nasty comment about this album, just my personal opinion. Zero 7 have simply changed their target group, this album is intended for older ages, and thats why a lot of people don’t like this album. I absolutely fell in love with the first 2 albums (simple things/when it falls) but this one did not live up to my expectations. I still appreciate zero 7, but the truth is that most bands come up with 2 amazing albums and then the rest are just simply not as good. So for the people who like Zero 7’s first 2 albums I highly recomend a band called “The Album Leaf”.
    Customer Review: Can’t stop listening….
It’s taken me a while to get round to writing this, but felt I had to applaud this outstanding effort by Zero 7. As others have mentioned, this is very different to Simple Things and When It Falls - the influence of Jose Gonzalez definitely comes in, and Sia’s voice is tested in different ways (and she does magnificently, as always). Yes, it took a couple of listens to ‘get it’ but now, I am a woman obsessed. Favourite tracks would be Futures, You’re My Flame and Fine Social Scene. Track 3 “Seeing Things” reminds me a bit of the theme tune from a 70s educational science video!!! Anyway, go and buy it, give it a chance if you’ve been hooked on Z7’s ‘old’ style - and then let it all become very clear how brilliant this is.

    Customer Review: Camping Trash can
We received this as a gift. It works very well and even stood up through at pretty heavy rain storm. Although it is exactly 30 gallons, so the cheap 30 gallon trash bags really don’t fit well. Save yourself the hasle and spend the extra dollar on the namebrand bags. The box it was shipped in was HUGE, don’t be alarmed!

    Customer Review: Essential reading,
A beautiful and tradtional story of magic, freindship & growing up. Adored by my children, loved by me. Every school shelf should be stocked with this classic and every home shelf too. When the trend for books is to ‘gross out’ young readers, this story reminds us that there is and always will be space for beautifully written well told enchanting stories.

If you want to create your own dream home from the comfort of your own PC look no further than the Home & Garden Design Collection.

This title includes two CD-ROMs providing a series of fun tools that enable you to design your home and to landscape virtual gardens. One of the strongest features is the 3-D photoview program that lets you import a digital or scanned photo of your home onto the computer so you can landscape around it and make the images part of the final design.

This title does take a while to install on your computer which is not surprising when you consider all the different programs it offers. There are tools for all kinds of interior design, adding bathtubs, adding windows, adding floor drains. You can add colours and calculate the square footage of pathways. It’s detailed too so for example you can design intricate roofs and determine their textures.

The title comes with plenty of background information including a clear index which shows you how to use all the different tools. You can use these programs for professional level planning and designing but complete beginners will have to be prepared to commit time at first to mastering the different functions. The 3-D effects are powerful and the end result is a bit like a video game as you move through the design.

The great advantage of this program is that you can try out lots of ideas and get a pretty good understanding of how they would look in your home. Some people sometimes find it difficult to visualise how building work might alter a room. Using this program you can create virtual effect before bringing in real builders. –Justin Hunt

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE
This is without a doubt the most infuriating piece of software I have ever used, and I’ve used some corkers. I have a masters degree from Imperial College and am a chartered engineer, yet I have just spent the best part of two hours trying to draw two lines on a computer screen. I have spent an entire day trying to chase walls that move at random when they are resized, or resize themselves when they are moved. Add that to the fact that whenever two walls touch they jump several feet in a random direction and you can begin to see why I recommend that you do not buy this product. You may be planning an extension, but by the time you’ve even got the first storey planned you will need to rebuild the rest of the house as you will spend large parts of your day banging your head against its walls.
    Customer Review: Excellent product.
Great Product. I used to design theplans for my extentions. It helped a great deal.

    Customer Review: Very cute!
This is so cute! I live in an apartment, and the little garden tools are the perfect size for my container garden! The goodies were delicious (love the frosted flower cookie), and I have to say that the lotion is a very nice touch for those of us who garden and wash our hands a lot. The “basket” tote container was turned into a gadget caddy; part of the decor. What a fun and practical gift for a reasonable price!

Customer Review: My wife loved this gift
Gave this to my wife this spring as she started her annual spring planting. For the price, it was money well spent. The tools are ment for indoor gardening, not outside, but she really enjoyed the food, she enjoys tea and it won me points for thoughtfulness. Usually order something from another company but found there quality not as good. Received prompt shipping and excellent communication for seller, will be ordering again.

Chances are there’s barely a parent of a toddler in the country who hasn’t encountered In The Night Garden in some form over the past few months. The latest BBC-hit from the CBeebies channel, and with a passing resemblance to Teletubbies, this debut DVD for the show brings together five episodes. And many parents already, we suspect, will have their credit cards ready.

In true childrens’ television tradition, In The Night Garden is often as alien to adults as it is compelling to its real target audience. But heck, do children love it. Accompanied by the gentle narration of Sir Derek Jacobi, it’s billed a nursery rhyme picture book of sorts. This manifests itself in the shape of a wild mix of children and characters, who get up to a mixture of diverse and diverting activities.

And this is one of the many areas where In The Night Garden strikes gold. Not only does it have a distinctive and warm collection of characters, but it does have an educational undercurrent to it all. In short, it engages its target audience particularly well, and teaches them a little in the process.

The DVD is rounded off with special bonus footage and a parents’ guide, but it’s the five episodes that are set to be spun time and time again. And rightly so. Expect this to be the first DVD release of many, too, for a show with many, many years ahead of it. –Jon Foster

Customer Review: Whoever invented this should be knighted for services to parents!!
This is a wonderfully imaginative and beautifully created series for pre-school children. This is the only programme that settles my one year old and keeps his attention for ages- NOTHING else works!! He absolutely loves this series and claps his hands whenever it comes on. I particularly like the part of the DVD where everybody “says goodnight” and its a very good, calming way of getting your child to chill out and unwind to bedtime. Even when in the midst of a screaming tantrum, this dvd turns my child from screaming banshee to mild mannered cutie (its a miracle!!). I’m so happy that they released it on dvd and there are now 3 series of which we have all of them. Its delightfully surreal, wonderfuly calming and I just love the fact that classically trained actor derek Jacobi sings “my name is iggle piggle, iggle piggle, iggle piggle wooo- etc”- utterly brilliant!
    Customer Review: blooming marvellous
wonderful. my 18 year old absolutely loves this programme. it keeps him quiet and contented and it just THE most perfect viewing after he’s played with his superskunk. it sets him up nicely for some really intense hallucinations and out-there political opinion-forming. marvellous.

Customer Review: Please vote for The Secret Garden (1949) to be released on DVD!!!!!!!!
This is a wonderful film with Margaret O’Brien playing the character Mary Lennox. I bought this film on VHS from a seller, the film kept freezing up though which was very annoying! It’s out of print, but all the other Secret Garden movies are out on DVD, and so should this one be! Please vote for the DVD release, the more votes the more likely it will go onto DVD!

    Customer Review: A manly tool
I purchased the Fiskars Power Gear Pruners as a Christmas present for my wife. Unfortunately, they don’t fit. By that I mean that the pruners are too large for my wife’s hand, and she does not have small hands. The upside is that she has given them to me and I find them to be powerful. It is still early to give a full evaluation, but so far, they are very good.
Customer Review: I wish I could say I like this item
I wish I could say I like this item, so many folks do…and Fiskars makes GREAT stuff, most of the time. But, if you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, these pruners are a nightmare. They don’t tell you that the handle ROLLS when you squeeze it closed. You have to grip it relatively tightly, a very painful experience for those of us with CTS. I assume this isn’t a problem for those with arthritis (don’t know why), but it would be SO NICE if they told folks about this rather odd feature ON THE DESCRIPTION….
