A concise, informative book with plenty of advice on chicken health, breeding, housing etc along with some really good egg recipes in part 2 of the book. An excellent buy for anyone starting out in small scale chicken keeping. The little stories at the end of the book are fun too.
Customer Review: A short, friendly book
The first half of the book gives a introduction to chicken keeping, with a strong emphasis on bantams. The emphasis is more on keeping hens as pets than as livestock. The author pays special attention to bantams. Areas such as medical treatment and raising chicks are covered as well as the basics of housing & feeding. The second half of the book is dedicated to recipes for using eggs; my hens haven’t started laying just yet so I’ve yet to test this bit.

As some of you may know, the LEED building rating system focuses on 6 key areas: Sustainable site development (SS), water savings/efficiency (WE), energy & atmosphere (EA), materials and resource (MR), indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and innovations & design process (ID). “Rain Gardens: Managing Water Sustainably in the Garden and Designed Landscape” is a very useful book on water savings/efficiency (WE). It described various ways of caturing, channeling, diverting and re-using water from rain and snow, including permeable paving, storm-water chains, bioretention ponds and green roofs. Rain gardens create great environment for wild life. They are visually pleasant, economical and sustainable. I live very close to several of the retention ponds of my local water district. They are fine examples of rain gardens, I always love to visit them and see the beautiful birds and plants in or near the retention ponds. Nigel Dunnett and Andy Clayden described many of the techniques that are used by my local water district. These techniques are unconventional and can be useful all over the world. They can effectively capture the storm water and let the water settle and clean itself through the natural process and save it for drought period, instead of using concrete-paved flood channel to rush the storm water to the ocean. “Rain Gardens: Managing Water Sustainably in the Garden and Designed Landscape” has 188 pages and many line drawings and beautiful interior color photos. This authoritative and timely book clearly explains the features of a rain garden, providing well illustrated international examples. Following this year’s record rainfall, this book should be read by planners, developers, architects, garden designers and anyone else interested in slowing the flow of rainwater into mains drainage and other water courses, using whatever outdoor space they have influence over. The Bold and Brilliant Garden is a stunningly beautiful book, crammed full of inspired ideas with glorious photography by Jon athan Buckley.Sarah Raven knows her plants and has a sure instinct for drama and daring. This is no-holds- barred gardening at its most exhilarating–few other gardeners would risk bright pink hyacinths amongst burnt orange wallflowers, punctuated by young rhubarb shoots, newly liberated from their forcing pots, in shades of pink and yellow; or suggest enhancing the effect of the almost black tulip Queen of the Night by scattering the gold and scarlet slashed Mickey Mouse amongst them. Her work as a flower grower and florist ensures that she has sought out the best varieties and many unusual colour variations.

One of the great strengths of this book is that although the brilliant flowers are undoubtedly the stars, the supporting cast is not neglected–foliage is used throughout as a backdrop, for structure and as a foil for the vivid colours of the flowers. Customer Review: A fantastic and inspirational book
Having borrowed this book from my local library several months ago and renewed it so many times I feel guilty, I’ve come to realise that I simply must buy this book. Having read it cover to cover and gazed at the gorgeous pictures, I now dip into it in on a regular basis for reference and ideas. This book is full of suggestions for filling your garden with a riot of colour and dramatic foliage with sections on suggestions for damp, dry, sunny and shady areas with helpful planting plans. Not a book for those who like their gardens sedate and pastel coloured but for everyone else it really is a must have book. Honestly one of the best gardening book I have ever read.

I was very disappointed by this “book” - , and reading it felt as though I was reading a pupil’s homework. I just wish I had read the reviews before I purchased it. What a dissapointment. Not a book, a booklet that you would expect from a child at primary school. No helpful dimensions, facts or anything else that would have been useful. I agree with the other readers who felt cheated. All I want to do is raise 4 or 5 hens and wanted information on coup size, feeding habits, size of garden run etc. If it were possible to award 0 out of 5, I would have.
