The housing market is a funny place at the moment. With house prices being incredibly high before the recession hit, many people found it hard to buy a home. Now that we are in a recession, house prices started to fall, however, because of the recession, it’s almost impossible to get a mortgage.

This combination has led to many rent property rather than buying their own home. It’s not just people looking to live in the property that want to rent. Many property investors are looking to buy property with a buy to let mortgage as these are becoming easier to get than a standard mortgage.

There are actually a number of advantages of renting property over buying. The main one would be that there are more properties available for rent than there are to buy. The monthly payments for rental property are generally lower than that of a mortgage. Tenants also have the advantage of not having to pay for any property maintenance that may be required. This responsibility normally falls on the landlord of the property.

One problem that often occurs in older property is mold. Even if you don’t have mold if your rental property, if you are part of a block, someoneelse’sproperty could be affecting yours. Because mold can cause many problems to your health, you are entitled to request a mold inspection, even if your home has no visible signs of mold. If no work is being done to resolve the mold problem, you have the right to stop paying your rent and pay for the work yourself.

Of course you can buy appliances such as dehumidifiers that would help to reduce any chance of getting mold in your home. A dehumidifier is used to reduce the humidity in your home to the safe levels which lies between 40%-60%. Having a simple piece of equipment like this is will reduce humidity therefore reduce the chance of mold and mildew growing in your home.

A simple weather station can’t tell you how high the humidity is within your home, you’ll need a thermohygrometer to accurately measure the levels of humidity.
