Compared with the Broadway cast recording, the 1956 soundtrack to the film version of The King and I wins hands down. Yul Brynner is the king (literally and figuratively) in both formats (how could anyone else own such a role?), but the movie’s score has better sonics, Brynner’s voice is stronger, and the tunes are more memorable (thanks to Alfred Newman’s conducting and Ken Darby’s scoring) than on any of the various cast recordings. Marni Nixon sings the role of Anna (played onscreen by Deborah Kerr), Brynner delivers his hallmark performance, and the best-loved tunes–”Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” and “I Whistle a Happy Tune” are the versions we’ll always remember. If you loved the film like I did, you will want to buy the soundtrack. The audio quality is outstanding, and it will bring back fond memories!

I bought this CD as a Christmas gift for my mother who loves musicals. I looked all over the town where I live (Santa Maria, CA) and was unbale to find it anywhere. My search through Amazon brought up the product quickly and it was reasonably priced! It arrived within one week in excellent condition.

I remember this series on the box and marvelled at the intricacies of Victorian and Edwardian horticulture. Surely the DVD version must be due soon. Its companion series, The Victorian Kitchen Garden is available and this would complete the set.

This is a wonderful series, the final in the “Victorian Series”. Harry Dodson lovingly re-creates a victorian walled flower garden and Peter Thoday tells us of the many Victorian inventions for the garden. Highly recommended.
